Sounds more like Verdun and the many fights to capture and re-capture it's forts in brutal room to room underground combat... Been there, seen the remains, 3 weeks after graduating 300days of compulsory conscript training in a mortar platoon. Walking those preserved battlefields was a spine chilling experience in that context

Be that some "custom" units for the mission, like idk, armed civilians, guards, some unique enemies or ANYTHING really. Or cool mechanics like searchlights and many, many more! Basically anything that is not just the "basic" level of stuff you get to use in multiplayer or skirmish. Campaings should be FULL of that. So far this games looks SUPER promising.

It's like they took the best of both worlds. I love how the game even references how actual fascists got their start in Italy, busting union members and showing the ruling class they could be useful. Trade unionists and communists were a prime target of uh, every fascist group in history, like that saying from Germany about "first they came for..."
This game changed how we fight AI in RTS. Normally AI suck at using artilleries. This game just remove the artillery option for players and give the AI easily accessible direct fire and indirect fire support.
The book (the movie has absolutely nothing to do with the book) gives and explanation as to why the bugs don't feel the plasma heat. Basically the book states that they mix a chemical compound within the thorax of the artillery bug, that remains inert, and heatless, until it is exposed to oxygen. Hence why the artillery bugs have plating around the "firing port" but not on the actual thorax.

Where as the bug plasma launchers, both in movie and book, are used a planetary defense batteries, in fact in the movies, they are used as starship batteries in space combat.

If I recall the books correctly, The Federation and the Public knew of the Bugs long before the war. To the point that planets were completely forbidden to Colonization because they were too close to Bug Space. It's the reason the war starts in the first place, Because a group of Mormon Extremist created an unauthorized colony on a Bug World.
From the guy getting executed for saying "this planet is unsafe" to "from their new headquartes in space, command has expressed their full confidence!", every line in this is amazing :D

There's a few missions you get the Guard and their tanks, and it was done so well because I remember the one mission where the Space Marine Sergeant says "Sir, the Imperial Guard have arrived." And your first thought is, oh great, that's handy. But they're actually traitor guardsmen. So well done.

Yeah, I notice a lot of 40k games either take the source material way to seriously and go out if their way to make the Imperium the ‘Good Guy’ or just don’t take it seriously at all and turn it into a massive joke. This game actually captures a lot of the right atmosphere. Yeah your fighting for humanity against a invading xenocidal bug horde but your government is pretty authoritative, kinda evil, and is absolutely murderous.
Seeing how giddy Rimmy gets over anything that reminds him of Starship Troopers is always a treat, so it's nice to see that this game is shaping up so well. The game is actually surprising me with how much effort is going into it. I was expecting a solid if ultimately average RTS with a 'Starship Troopers' paintjob, but...well, I don't think anyone that doesn't have a love for the source films would think to frame a base-defense mission with a buying enough time to ensure a publicity execution can go through. Games that take the time to mix their tone/story with the gameplay are always a treat.
100% agree. I remember seeing the original trailer for this game and thinking "damn, that looks like it's going to be some crappy mobile game." Now that I've seen some gameplay it's on my wishlist and I can't wait to put some hours into it. Props to Slitherine, they have a reputation for putting out niche games with quality content. It looks like this is going to be another good one.
One thing that kills me is it desperately needed to make more of a contrast between the Fed Net broadcasts and the on the ground situation. Like the callouts of your troopers often come across as a bit too dry and by the book, when it'd help if it was more guttural, punchy and at odds with what the Federation Approved Broadcast was saying. A morale system where your troopers could break and run instead of stoically standing to the last would help too, could lead to a fun dynamic where you gotta use your reserves to shoot dead routing troops to Restore Order
It seems the game is borrowing elements of the books, and films. You can see the way the bugs adjust to make things harder for you and you get new toys to help counter them and make it easier. By the end of the game, you likely are going to be using bug killer mech armours and mind controlled bugs as weapons, while getting your teeth near kicked in my advanced superbugs.
Those chad Imperial Guard in DoW can actually be upgraded with heavy and special weapons. I always take those guys to burn down the Ork camp with me in the mission's end.

Holy smokes this game came a long way. The initial reveals were pretty underwhelming with stock music and the like. This on the other hand shows some real effort and the missions have a lot of variety. I like how theyre really playing into the lore of how Federation really did just treat the troopers as expendable and forces you to do the same at points.
There's this RTS called "Toy Soldiers" where it's literally a tabletop diorama in someone's house and you bring it to life to fight. One of the features I absolutely loved is how you can personally possess the units - possess a sniper tower to pick off enemies, possess an airplane for bombing or dogfighting, possess a flamethrower turret to lay into the enemy early. You may have even seen it in Cepheus Protocol how you can now first-person pilot one of the soldiers. I think it's an awesome mechanic for people who are sick of screaming "JUST SHOOT THE THING!" in an RTS.
The first part reminded me of the beginning of The all guardsman party when entire potential characters are killed off against Tyranids in a desperate battle where it just ends with the last guardsmen being eaten in a rear guard action but I think that was just inspired by the starship movie.
What I really wanted to see from this IP for a long time is a combination of book, movie and previous games. People want overpowered book armor? Ok, let them face overpowered sentient bugs armed with particle accelerators like in the book then. And vice versa. Preferably with bugs having an option to use expendable movie bugs as meatshields for book ones while humans are forced to stretch their forces and behind frontline of book exosuits is a tasty rear of movie soldiers doing local logistics. Absolutely ideal would be able if you'd be able to incorporate "stickmen" as third side and give them irl equipment that would make the life if suit users a real hell if budget and technology levels were comparable. Like for SPAA for example.
i love what they did with the tone of the game. I literally exclaimed "that's so starship troopers" because it sticks so well to the source material instead of doing whatever bullshit the sequels were doing

The book is good as a military science fiction novel and as veteran of the United States navy there were a lot points in the boom that I could relate to. This looks like based in the movie so no mechs or robots. The books on the other hand made the mobile infranty into a hybrid of space marines in iron man suits.

Also the original book was written when universal suffrage was not guaranteed and racism was guaranteed in the law, so "service grants citizenship" can be an analogy for fairness.
I hope they add something similar to infested planet which had a campaign DLC but this one is for free and you can go throughout the planet fighting new bugs and there will be certain squads with certain mutations/evolutions cuz it's very similar to how infested planet works mechanic wise.
Tbh, I think I'd have preferred a game where you can play as the Arachnids. Sounds like it'd be a fun time listening to the panicked screams of the humans as you overrun them.
Those e-pulse rifles are the low budget laser guns they gave the Mobile Infantry in the awful Starship Troopers 2 movie. Nice little reference by the dev team.
Rimmy, during the prison riot, there's another room before the execution room with a capturable terminal, you should replay the mission to see what it does.
I really, really hope they have something like the Book's Power Armor in one of the late-game missions. Ideally multiple. Just like one dude in a unit who can absolutely obliterate a whole swarm of standard bugs on his own and can move over pretty much any terrain obstacle on the map.
Both in the movies, as well as the books, Terran tanks where very rare, mainly because even a group of 4-5 basic warrior bugs could rip one apart, the tank bugs would burrow underneath it, and their acid could melt the tank's armor, ect.
At a minimum, the devs have shown off video of a later level, where you specifically get a few different types of Marauder mechs, so you get those if nothing else.

I don't know anything about Starship Troopers other than the first movie and their props being re-used in a God damn Power Rangers series. But I can imagine the later media completely screwed over everything. The first movie is like a propaganda film that would be broadcast to people actually in the story. The bugs shooting asteroids millions of lightyears and hitting Earth in the span of like ten minutes is the obvious clue in. Then the giant screen showing the rapidly increasing number of fatalities from the main character's home town just reeks with "This is definitely a terrible thing. Please be angry at the bugs." The officer found hiding in a closet says he was hiding from the bugs so they wouldn't take his brain and learn humanity's secrets. Obviously he made that whole thing up because he was a coward. But this propaganda film, probably directed by him, lied about one of the bugs actually being able to suck out brains and learn intelligence from them. And for his bravery in not letting the enemy get his brain, he's given a medal. The war isn't about stopping the bugs from killing humanity. It's about humanity exterminating a species for resources. Starship Troopers is space jingoism through the eyes of a populace being lied to. And if it ever strays from that, it's dead to me.
It's just hit me how much Starship Troopers media I've consumed in my life. Grew up on the movie, watched the CG series as a kid, now this game... and still without reading the original book, in spite of me having probably read every *other* Heinlein story, and owning that huge anthology of "future history" short stories.

I just absolutely love the tonality of this game. They really weren't afraid to go full Verhoeven with the Federation while giving them more Heinlein tools, and like Rimmy, I adore it.

If I recall the books correctly, The Federation and the Public knew of the Bugs long before the war. To the point that planets were completely forbidden to Colonization because they were too close to Bug Space.

There's a few missions you get the Guard and their tanks, and it was done so well because I remember the one mission where the Space Marine Sergeant says "Sir, the Imperial Guard have arrived." And your first thought is, oh great, that's handy. But they're actually traitor guardsmen. So well done.
Thats why the infiltration misson hurt so bad. You were pretty much forced to walk past a group that was getting killed by a bunch of orks

Yeah, I notice a lot of 40k games either take the source material way to seriously and go out if their way to make the Imperium the ‘Good Guy’ or just don’t take it seriously at all and turn it into a massive joke. This game actually captures a lot of the right atmosphere. Yeah your fighting for humanity against a invading xenocidal bug horde but your government is pretty authoritative, kinda evil, and is absolutely murderous.

Seeing how giddy Rimmy gets over anything that reminds him of Starship Troopers is always a treat, so it's nice to see that this game is shaping up so well.
The game is actually surprising me with how much effort is going into it. I was expecting a solid if ultimately average RTS with a 'Starship Troopers' paintjob, but...well, I don't think anyone that doesn't have a love for the source films would think to frame a base-defense mission with a buying enough time to ensure a publicity execution can go through. Games that take the time to mix their tone/story with the gameplay are always a treat.
100% agree. I remember seeing the original trailer for this game and thinking "damn, that looks like it's going to be some crappy mobile game." Now that I've seen some gameplay it's on my wishlist and I can't wait to put some hours into it. Props to Slitherine, they have a reputation for putting out niche games with quality content. It looks like this is going to be another good one.
One thing that kills me is it desperately needed to make more of a contrast between the Fed Net broadcasts and the on the ground situation.
Like the callouts of your troopers often come across as a bit too dry and by the book, when it'd help if it was more guttural, punchy and at odds with what the Federation Approved Broadcast was saying.
A morale system where your troopers could break and run instead of stoically standing to the last would help too, could lead to a fun dynamic where you gotta use your reserves to shoot dead routing troops to Restore Order

It seems the game is borrowing elements of the books, and films. You can see the way the bugs adjust to make things harder for you and you get new toys to help counter them and make it easier. By the end of the game, you likely are going to be using bug killer mech armours and mind controlled bugs as weapons, while getting your teeth near kicked in my advanced superbugs.

Those chad Imperial Guard in DoW can actually be upgraded with heavy and special weapons. I always take those guys to burn down the Ork camp with me in the mission's end.

Holy smokes this game came a long way. The initial reveals were pretty underwhelming with stock music and the like. This on the other hand shows some real effort and the missions have a lot of variety. I like how theyre really playing into the lore of how Federation really did just treat the troopers as expendable and forces you to do the same at points.

There's this RTS called "Toy Soldiers" where it's literally a tabletop diorama in someone's house and you bring it to life to fight. One of the features I absolutely loved is how you can personally possess the units - possess a sniper tower to pick off enemies, possess an airplane for bombing or dogfighting, possess a flamethrower turret to lay into the enemy early. You may have even seen it in Cepheus Protocol how you can now first-person pilot one of the soldiers. I think it's an awesome mechanic for people who are sick of screaming "JUST SHOOT THE THING!" in an RTS.
Another game I know and love does that. It's called "Call to Arms".
Oh I think I played that when I was a kid. The boss battles where great. "Toy Soldiers" was such a cool game.

The first part reminded me of the beginning of The all guardsman party when entire potential characters are killed off against Tyranids in a desperate battle where it just ends with the last guardsmen being eaten in a rear guard action but I think that was just inspired by the starship movie.
What I really wanted to see from this IP for a long time is a combination of book, movie and previous games. People want overpowered book armor? Ok, let them face overpowered sentient bugs armed with particle accelerators like in the book then. And vice versa. Preferably with bugs having an option to use expendable movie bugs as meatshields for book ones while humans are forced to stretch their forces and behind frontline of book exosuits is a tasty rear of movie soldiers doing local logistics.
Absolutely ideal would be able if you'd be able to incorporate "stickmen" as third side and give them irl equipment that would make the life if suit users a real hell if budget and technology levels were comparable. Like for SPAA for example.

The newer animated movies actually had a cool compromise with dudes in power armor still using rifles and grenades. I honestly wouldn't mind that I the game because of the risk reward presented by jumping up a cliff and potentially being bushed.

@@Ishmachiah I honestly feel that comparing the two is like comparing pork and beef. Both are good but for different reasons. The book is good as a military science fiction novel and as veteran of the United States navy there were a lot points in the boom that I could relate to. The movie is an excellent scifi b action movie and I love it for that to.

Also the original book was written when universal suffrage was not guaranteed and racism was guaranteed in the law, so "service grants citizenship" can be an analogy for fairness.

I really, really hope they have something like the Book's Power Armor in one of the late-game missions. Ideally multiple. Just like one dude in a unit who can absolutely obliterate a whole swarm of standard bugs on his own and can move over pretty much any terrain obstacle on the map.

Both in the movies, as well as the books, Terran tanks where very rare, mainly because even a group of 4-5 basic warrior bugs could rip one apart, the tank bugs would burrow underneath it, and their acid could melt the tank's armor, ect.

At a minimum, the devs have shown off video of a later level, where you specifically get a few different types of Marauder mechs, so you get those if nothing else.

I don't know anything about Starship Troopers other than the first movie and their props being re-used in a God damn Power Rangers series.
But I can imagine the later media completely screwed over everything. The first movie is like a propaganda film that would be broadcast to people actually in the story. The bugs shooting asteroids millions of lightyears and hitting Earth in the span of like ten minutes is the obvious clue in. Then the giant screen showing the rapidly increasing number of fatalities from the main character's home town just reeks with "This is definitely a terrible thing. Please be angry at the bugs." The officer found hiding in a closet says he was hiding from the bugs so they wouldn't take his brain and learn humanity's secrets. Obviously he made that whole thing up because he was a coward. But this propaganda film, probably directed by him, lied about one of the bugs actually being able to suck out brains and learn intelligence from them. And for his bravery in not letting the enemy get his brain, he's given a medal.
The war isn't about stopping the bugs from killing humanity. It's about humanity exterminating a species for resources. Starship Troopers is space jingoism through the eyes of a populace being lied to. And if it ever strays from that, it's dead to me.
Well then, it seems like the game has that pretty well nailed down.
Now THIS is what a modern RTS should look like!

As a fan who grow up with this franchise. I grow up watching it's cgi tv series and movies. I may not read all it's books, but as a normal fan, this warms my heart seeing this franchise grow. A personal gifted feeling that I know fan's same like me know that feeling. 😊
I just absolutely love the tonality of this game. They really weren't afraid to go full Verhoeven with the Federation while giving them more Heinlein tools, and like Rimmy, I adore it.
