Oddly it was the moment I facepalmed so hard I got brain damage. Seems they're basing the game very much off what Veerhoven tried to do with the movie, rather than the books. I could understand the Federation using civil enlistees as miners on a hostile world, but this really makes it sound like they're either tricking or straight-up drafting civilians into this work, which really, _really_ isn't how the Federation does things!
@@Archris17 the Federation sounds great in principle, and appealing to the largely civil-minded majority, but lets be honest here, when has a ruling military elite (full Citizens in this case) in history not rapidly become authoritative and exclusionary in order to maintain their power.

There is an episode of proocedings (us naval institute podcast) about the film, the book and the contradictions a about military service in a democracy and a militarist state. Check it out!

This is a pretty brilliant use of the IP. RTS is definitely a great choice for the SST-movieverse, in fact I remember playing Starship Troopers-based custom maps back in the old StarCraft 1 days. For an obvious budget RTS this looks pretty solid, too - and of course, RTSes just don't get the big dollars these days, so budget is fine, really. 5:24 Fun fact: The XM8 was _literally designed_ to look like the Moritas from Verhoeven's Starship Troopers. By order of the US Ordinance Department. Not even joking - they wanted their new replacement for the M4 to "look more Starship Troopers". Look it up.

Honestly, watching this has made me really want to have an Aliens RTS. Not so much one fighting the Xenomorphs outside of certain special missions but one that leverages the Aliens RPG books that started coming out in 2019. You could have the UA, UPP and 3WE all fighting over influence on the Frontier, with things like Weyland-Yutani and other corporate interests/complications. There is a surprisingly well thought out universe behind Aliens that we never really get to see.
Honestly? I'd play the crap out of an alien RTS, but you will require at least one game mode with xenomorphs in it. But aside from that, hell yeah, gimme a decent 80s space war!

I think it should play up the almost Napoleonic line of battle defensive tactics against the bug hoard. Make it all about using line of sight, positioning and terrain to kill the bugs as efficiently as possible while minimising losses. Add stuff like Enfilade fire doing extra damage. You can’t suppress a bug and most don’t have ranged weapons so close ranks and massed fire makes sense Adding stuff like an officer who provides aoe buffs or can be attached to units dawn of war style would be cool. I hope the release version has coh2 style unit abilities and lots of unit types and bug types Looks awesome so far. Got a massive soft spot for Heinlein
Kinda don't like that it is based off the movie rather than the books version of combat. But I kinda understand that you can't easily build maps where you have guys throwing around tactical nukes as their power armor has them make movements in 2 mile jetpack-aided long jumps, with squads of 10 having each member separated by at least a mile.
@@ee822 back in 1999 Starship troopers terran ascendancy came out, sorta rpg style meaning as the campaign progressed your squad would gain experience and rank, unlocking power suits and battle armor with jets etc, you also got to throw round tactical nukes. it was sorta a mix of the film and the book, you couldn't stay too far apart eg you needed covering fire as the bugs attack the isolated team mate so you had to bait them out. wish they would remake it lol

7:42 World in Conflict had a system like that, where you had a pool of requisition points that you used to buy units and when a unit died, its cost was slowly added back to the pool, so the main cost to losing a unit was time rather than anything else.
Music is brilliant yeah. The demo is great too. A lot of non-arachnid bugs in the demo which really hampered the game. Overall a solid 7/10 demo. Also bruh Rimmy. You got the older demo version which meant the voice actors for the missions were all robots.
It has some bugs and they can definitely work on it but I mean it’s a demo it’s not being released for another five months it’s good now think of how good it will be then

@@Ryanowning Because I play Exalted and I've been in a long campaign since about 2015 where I played as a Twilight Caste. I like the Twilight Caste, they are my favorite out of all the types of Solars (with Dawn caste being a close second). I focus on Healing, Archery, and Magic. (I actually managed to climb Mount Meru and become one of the most powerful magic users in Creation, gonna be so happy to kick the Ebon Dragon's ass, or at least ruin his plans to destroy all things).
Starship Troopers is one of my fav movies and I remember playing the FPS with friends at an internet café quite a bit back in the day. Book is vastly different as pretty much everyone knows but what is also interesting though is how many different IPs it has inspired or have by proxy, I mean from what I remember the guy who wrote All you need is kill was inspired by it and Edge of Tomorrow was heavily inspired by that. I mean, I don't think Heinlein was expecting to inspire a Japanese manga artist who would become famous, inspire tons of other manga artist but also a Hollywood director.

It's funny that Rimmy put this out today. I've been reading through the original Starship Troopers (the book, not the movie). I love both for different reasons. The book is great because of the setting and the way it explores the philosophy of soldiering and social order in a fictional future. The movie is great because it is basically a strawman parody of the book, and a masterpiece in its own right. Game looks good, might have to try it.

Seems like an interesting read.
Honestly if killing aliens with a squad sounds fun, I'd highly reccomend Helldivers. It's got a similar theme to Starship Troopers in that you're valiantly throwing your patriotic might against multiple alien forces to conquer and defend SUPER EARTH. So if having some alien blood spilled in your Liber-tea sounds like a good time, give it shot, and we'll gladly see you in the field Helldiver.
Yeah that game was huge fun when I played it on PS4. Another thing close to actual Starship Troopers shooter (except the 2005 fps game of the same name) is for me EDF 4.1
With regards to the Morita assault rifle thing if you mean the author of the screenplay you might be correct, but Heinlein's mobile infantry were much too big-dicked for assault rifles. The squad leaders and other officers had several tactical nukes in a launcher attached to their suits. That was just one more to the like five heavy weapons systems that every suit was equipped with.
You have your Y-racks (semi-auto grenade launcher over each shoulder), rocket launcher with all sorts of chemical and nuclear warheads, hand flamer, heavy flamer (more like a plasma weapon, with a short-range "beam" mode to match), about a dozen grenade variants, and a bunch of other weapons that are only hinted at. I want to play the RTS where something like the Morita is specifically called "obsolete", just like it is in the book.

Interplanetary armies would need standardized modular equipment that can easily be adapted for any combat role or their supply lines would become untenably bulky. iirc that was also how the Stoner modular weapon was supposed to work, although it never achieved widespread use by the US army.

honestly the biggest issue with that is just how wildly unstable Generals is; it's a miracle to get a full match complete, more so with mods, without a random fatal error occuring.

The problems with They Are Billions all revolved around game *structure*, like the campaign missions being Iron Man mode, being 4+ hours long, and how it was virtually impossible to recover from a single zombie infection.
As someone who's only familiar with the books this is weird to see. The Mobile Infantry here have basically the exact opposite doctrine as the ones in the books, and the Arachnids have none of the plasma rifles and landmines they loved so much.

Marauder Suit (the basic Powered Armor used by the Mobile Infantry) v Command Suit (for officers) would be fun. Jumping over buildings with ease and deflecting enemy fire. Outmaneuver the bugs.
Also, I really hope it doesn't have a lot of "complete blank before timer runs out and mission failure." Timers irritate the piss out of me. At the very least, if they do, my hope is it's not just "mission failure" back to title screen, but more of a "the main bug army bulk has arrived" and you get absolutely fucking swarmed. Might still give you enough of a chance to complete the mission if you're close to succeeding as the timer ends.
Sometimes you just can't justify a mission to be dragged out for 3 hours as you sit in base to mine out and fully upgrade when the story of the mission is "Everyone is dying pls send help!" Timers, if used properly are meant to reinforce the stakes of the story. Being able to not play the game and nothing punishes you for it can be an irreparable immersion breaker even if you don't think you care that much about it. Not to mention that there are a host of different timers used in games, soft timers and hard timers. The miner mission in the video using the miners as a soft timer where they drop regularly and after X amount of losses, the game is over. There is a max and minimum time you can complete or fail that mission, it just doesn't show in a counter on the side. But in reality, that mission sure does have a timer to it, the first time Rimmy lost was because he didn't play to the speed the mission requires you to play, he ran out of time. You could change the mechanic to be a timer on the side that said "Clear all mines by this time" and it wouldn't change that much, you'd still get a defeat screen when the timer runs out, you'd just be more aware of the speed you need to play at.
@@starcraft2own Or they could just develop better mechanics. Ramp up bug spawns to unsustainable levels, for instance. Have it to where you can choose when to bring the miners it, at the expense of increased bug activity if you take too long. Far superior to "time limit reached game over."
@@Agora2021 Ramping up bug presence is also a soft time limit though, depending on your skill, you won't be able to finish the mission after X amount of time due to the difficulty curve passing your skill level. And the time of your defeat would be pretty much the same unless you drastically changed your playingstyle. Which is the exact same outcome of having a timer on the side telling you when you lose. But i don't actually disagree with you, personally i play every game i touch on the highest difficulty. But i don't think it's a good idea for games to be inherently difficult, especially with artificial difficulty like a hard timer that just kicks you back to the menu because you aren't as good as the devs want you to be. So i'm right there with you hoping that they won't add artificial difficulty to the mission because they couldn't figure out engaging mechanics.
Love the Murita assault rifles from starship trooper got one out in my shed along with star wars and many other sci-fi weapons from the Colonial Pulse Rifle to the Helghast M82 Assault Rifle. All very groovy guns

Like there are legitimate reasons to want to own a firearm beyond 'hur dur mass murder'. Look at some of the videos, there's one where two riot cops straight up pick a woman up and carry her away. Then another with what looks to be a sea of riot police forcing people out of a park. Now, I am personally pro an armed civilian population (I'm American, that's pretty much a given) and I respect that some people don't agree with that. But a police state that is actively trampling on people's God given rights is exactly why an armed populace is needed.

This is beautiful. The original book is a discussion about the role of American military might and its responsibility, as well as the individuals responsibility for the world. Then the movie was made to be entertaining and gory, incorporate the violence suggested from the book yet at the same time mocking its militaristic and fascistic attitude. Then they made games just about killing of bugs. I love how adaptions slowly morph the material increasingly into mindless fun territory.
Wish there was some way to get the actual powered armor mobile infantry, faithfull to the original book. The action sequences in the book are an example of the most overpowered sci-fi unit ever and it was very fun.
It isn't over powered, there just comes a point where technological might is impossible to defeat, especially when you can't into tech to fight against it because bugs are dumb

Starship Troopers lends itself so well to this sort of game, I love the touch of riflemen being free, because that's the sortof mentality that the Federation operates on. Can't wait to play this, it's looking like alot of fun so far.
If you read the book you’ll know they were all wearing power armor with nukes and cluster missies attached. If you saw traitor of Mars the animated movie you’ll see how the mobile infantry were armored. On top of that you would see how the bugs would turn that armor to mulch and how much of a threat they were.
@@Unseengenie Same. The MI from the books are easily one of the most powerful human militaries in Science Fiction. The only ones who come to mind as anywhere close are the AEC from The Deathworlders, but that's mostly due to the ships being so much more powerful. Would love to see that fury represented properly.
Starcraft 2 has some fun custom modes I played a while ago where it´s basically this but the Zerg are players. Worked pretty well and you could definitely do it with this game. Maybe a bit too much for a small indie dev though.
an old russian warcraft map about starship troopers had the exact same concept! free troops but limited food capacity, and stronger units take more time to train, food is provided by capture points that humans need to defend and if they all get destroyed - humans lose.
I recently got ahold of the old Rpughneck series, writing surprisingly holds up especially well, can't say the same for the CGI. Would love them to re-release it or put some money into it and reanimated the whole thing.
You're goddam right it is! I remember doing sprinting drills in mission 2 to make sure my new sergeant wasn't a slowpoke... humping it on the maps was hard enough, but a 31 speed start made it just a little more bearable.

Every time I see a starship troopers thing I always hope there's gonna be some reference to the books mobile infantry. I don't even mind the movie as long as I pretend its completely disconnected, but lets be honest; the MI from the books were way better. Like, "probably a bit OP for 40k" better. One soldier per mile is dangerously close together. Carrying 2 kiloton nuclear rockets.
there's a reason for that; the book is fascist wank material, where the movies were (or started as) political satire of fascism. The entire thing is set up as basically Space Nazi Germany with a coat of Freedom paint. The MI in the book are absolutely presented too good, and the ones in the movies are probably closer to how it'd've been.

you know whats funny, is the Army literally asked "Can you make it look more Starship Troopers?" when they talked to H&K about doing the XM-8. no, I'm not kidding. That's why the thing looks like it does. and the designers did take some queues from the OICW as I recall when designing the guns for ST.
I suppose the mecha suit stuff would be more canonically accurate, but I have to admit I'd kinda slightly prefer if the "marauder" we got was the one man army killing machines from the FPS game instead
I really wish Starship Troopers content would actually base off the book, not just the movies. Lack of Power Armor really hurts the universe and the entire concept behind "Mobile Infantry" I can't squash bugs 'on the bounce' without my troops able to bounce.
One thing this game needs that RTS's need often is an auto-priority feature. Like for example the riflemen, set their priority to be Closest Strongest While snipers should have their priority be Farthest Weakest/ranged So you can be more focused on formations rather than having to manage what everyone is shooting at and those spitters aren't just picking off your men because you're busy trying to keep them from getting eaten.
Even beyond the philosophy (which saddens me, seeing so many people butcher Heinlein's work in the comments), just the different weaponry would make an amazing RTS. Imagine Marauder infantry squads with flamers and pocket nukes, fighting bugs with actual weapons and hive tactics? I feel like this current game could have been about the Anglo-Zulu War instead, and the gameplay wouldn't be much different.
The only thing I can say that's negative on the jump-off is that like the movie, it's nothing like the book. Check out the book though it's pretty good.
So funny thing about that XM8 comment. When the US Army was testing the XM8 one of the officers in charge of the project told H&K that they wanted the rifle to look more futuristic and told them. "Make it look like something from starship troopers". That's no BS that really happened hahaha 😆.

Okay, played the demo and gone through all the available missions. One of the things I want to mention about the game I don't like is the Faci attitude and approach by High Command. Which in the novel of the setting, is far from what the Terran Federation and the MI is. Yeah I know their going off the movie side of things. But come on, people get their heads out of their arses about that! But otherwise, going to go through it again (a few times). And see how the game stacks overhaul. I do agree, the spitters just wreck my Infantry worse than the warriors. And I'd like it if their was some target priority button or key I could use. Since snipers shooting warriors along with everyone else. Is just stupid on their part, and makes them just laborious. But I have hopes for this game, and really don't want to be disappointed. I'll be doing my part.

If I had one complaint, it's that they only used the movies aesthetic. Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles had some awesome designs that made it a perfect midpoint between the novel and the films. That might be more of a copyright issue and who currently holds what rights to which designs though.

I still have a visceral hatred for Paul Verhoeven, because of this movie. No understanding of the source material (because he did not read it). It would be like adapting Handmaid's Tale as a movie about how uppity women destroy the good and proper christian civilization with their hysteria.
People still think the first movie represents the idea Heinlein had for the mobile infantry, but in fairness the idea of a exo-suit that is a deus ex machina is hard to believe. If anything the mobile infantry is more akin to the Edge of Tomorrow suits, so that I wait with baited breath to see again.
This brings up major flashbacks to the old Starship Troopers RTS... The one which rapidly becomes about mechs insanely bouncing about the landscape (like the book)... I miss that game. Lol.

Oddly it was the moment I facepalmed so hard I got brain damage. Seems they're basing the game very much off what Veerhoven tried to do with the movie, rather than the books. I could understand the Federation using civil enlistees as miners on a hostile world, but this really makes it sound like they're either tricking or straight-up drafting civilians into this work, which really, _really_ isn't how the Federation does things!
@@Archris17 the Federation sounds great in principle, and appealing to the largely civil-minded majority, but lets be honest here, when has a ruling military elite (full Citizens in this case) in history not rapidly become authoritative and exclusionary in order to maintain their power.

There is an episode of proocedings (us naval institute podcast) about the film, the book and the contradictions a about military service in a democracy and a militarist state. Check it out!

This is a pretty brilliant use of the IP. RTS is definitely a great choice for the SST-movieverse, in fact I remember playing Starship Troopers-based custom maps back in the old StarCraft 1 days. For an obvious budget RTS this looks pretty solid, too - and of course, RTSes just don't get the big dollars these days, so budget is fine, really.

It's actually not the first RTS style SST game, Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy came out in like 2000. It was more of a squad based tactics game.

Honestly, watching this has made me really want to have an Aliens RTS. Not so much one fighting the Xenomorphs outside of certain special missions but one that leverages the Aliens RPG books that started coming out in 2019. You could have the UA, UPP and 3WE all fighting over influence on the Frontier, with things like Weyland-Yutani and other corporate interests/complications. There is a surprisingly well thought out universe behind Aliens that we never really get to see.

I think it should play up the almost Napoleonic line of battle defensive tactics against the bug hoard. Make it all about using line of sight, positioning and terrain to kill the bugs as efficiently as possible while minimising losses. Add stuff like Enfilade fire doing extra damage.
You can’t suppress a bug and most don’t have ranged weapons so close ranks and massed fire makes sense
Adding stuff like an officer who provides aoe buffs or can be attached to units dawn of war style would be cool. I hope the release version has coh2 style unit abilities and lots of unit types and bug types

Kinda don't like that it is based off the movie rather than the books version of combat. But I kinda understand that you can't easily build maps where you have guys throwing around tactical nukes as their power armor has them make movements in 2 mile jetpack-aided long jumps, with squads of 10 having each member separated by at least a mile.
@@ee822 back in 1999 Starship troopers terran ascendancy came out, sorta rpg style meaning as the campaign progressed your squad would gain experience and rank, unlocking power suits and battle armor with jets etc, you also got to throw round tactical nukes. it was sorta a mix of the film and the book, you couldn't stay too far apart eg you needed covering fire as the bugs attack the isolated team mate so you had to bait them out. wish they would remake it lol

World in Conflict had a system like that, where you had a pool of requisition points that you used to buy units and when a unit died, its cost was slowly added back to the pool, so the main cost to losing a unit was time rather than anything else.

Music is brilliant yeah. The demo is great too. A lot of non-arachnid bugs in the demo which really hampered the game. Overall a solid 7/10 demo.

I like the Twilight Caste, they are my favorite out of all the types of Solars (with Dawn caste being a close second). I focus on Healing, Archery, and Magic. (I actually managed to climb Mount Meru and become one of the most powerful magic users in Creation, gonna be so happy to kick the Ebon Dragon's ass, or at least ruin his plans to destroy all things).
Starship Troopers is one of my fav movies and I remember playing the FPS with friends at an internet café quite a bit back in the day.
Book is vastly different as pretty much everyone knows but what is also interesting though is how many different IPs it has inspired or have by proxy, I mean from what I remember the guy who wrote All you need is kill was inspired by it and Edge of Tomorrow was heavily inspired by that. I mean, I don't think Heinlein was expecting to inspire a Japanese manga artist who would become famous, inspire tons of other manga artist but also a Hollywood director.

Then there is a constant dialogue about foreigners(despite Rico and his father themselves being a pseudo "twist" on nationality for american readers of the time).

It's funny that Rimmy put this out today. I've been reading through the original Starship Troopers (the book, not the movie).
I love both for different reasons.
The book is great because of the setting and the way it explores the philosophy of soldiering and social order in a fictional future.
The movie is great because it is basically a strawman parody of the book, and a masterpiece in its own right.

Starship Troopers is such a perfect universe for video games and it is criminally underused. Helldivers went on sale last week too, coincidence?
With regards to the Morita assault rifle thing if you mean the author of the screenplay you might be correct, but Heinlein's mobile infantry were much too big-dicked for assault rifles. The squad leaders and other officers had several tactical nukes in a launcher attached to their suits. That was just one more to the like five heavy weapons systems that every suit was equipped with.
You have your Y-racks (semi-auto grenade launcher over each shoulder), rocket launcher with all sorts of chemical and nuclear warheads, hand flamer, heavy flamer (more like a plasma weapon, with a short-range "beam" mode to match), about a dozen grenade variants, and a bunch of other weapons that are only hinted at. I want to play the RTS where something like the Morita is specifically called "obsolete", just like it is in the book.

I was always hoping to see a game like _Warhammer 40K: Space Marine_ but you have the jump pack all the time and are much more mobile. Hell, it might be more fun as an FPS, I dunno. I just want an MI capsule trooper game where you play as one of them rather than a commander.

Interplanetary armies would need standardized modular equipment that can easily be adapted for any combat role or their supply lines would become untenably bulky. iirc that was also how the Stoner modular weapon was supposed to work, although it never achieved widespread use by the US army.

honestly the biggest issue with that is just how wildly unstable Generals is; it's a miracle to get a full match complete, more so with mods, without a random fatal error occuring.

The problems with They Are Billions all revolved around game *structure*, like the campaign missions being Iron Man mode, being 4+ hours long, and how it was virtually impossible to recover from a single zombie infection.
As someone who's only familiar with the books this is weird to see. The Mobile Infantry here have basically the exact opposite doctrine as the ones in the books, and the Arachnids have none of the plasma rifles and landmines they loved so much.

Marauder Suit (the basic Powered Armor used by the Mobile Infantry) v Command Suit (for officers) would be fun. Jumping over buildings with ease and deflecting enemy fire. Outmaneuver the bugs.

Also, I really hope it doesn't have a lot of "complete blank before timer runs out and mission failure." Timers irritate the piss out of me. At the very least, if they do, my hope is it's not just "mission failure" back to title screen, but more of a "the main bug army bulk has arrived" and you get absolutely fucking swarmed. Might still give you enough of a chance to complete the mission if you're close to succeeding as the timer ends.
To me the worst RTS trope is the commando stealth missions. Stealth segments in games not designed for stealth is an atrocity.
Sometimes you just can't justify a mission to be dragged out for 3 hours as you sit in base to mine out and fully upgrade when the story of the mission is "Everyone is dying pls send help!"
Timers, if used properly are meant to reinforce the stakes of the story. Being able to not play the game and nothing punishes you for it can be an irreparable immersion breaker even if you don't think you care that much about it. Not to mention that there are a host of different timers used in games, soft timers and hard timers. The miner mission in the video using the miners as a soft timer where they drop regularly and after X amount of losses, the game is over. There is a max and minimum time you can complete or fail that mission, it just doesn't show in a counter on the side. But in reality, that mission sure does have a timer to it, the first time Rimmy lost was because he didn't play to the speed the mission requires you to play, he ran out of time.
You could change the mechanic to be a timer on the side that said "Clear all mines by this time" and it wouldn't change that much, you'd still get a defeat screen when the timer runs out, you'd just be more aware of the speed you need to play at.
@@starcraft2own Or they could just develop better mechanics. Ramp up bug spawns to unsustainable levels, for instance. Have it to where you can choose when to bring the miners it, at the expense of increased bug activity if you take too long. Far superior to "time limit reached game over."
@@Agora2021 Ramping up bug presence is also a soft time limit though, depending on your skill, you won't be able to finish the mission after X amount of time due to the difficulty curve passing your skill level. And the time of your defeat would be pretty much the same unless you drastically changed your playingstyle. Which is the exact same outcome of having a timer on the side telling you when you lose.
But i don't actually disagree with you, personally i play every game i touch on the highest difficulty. But i don't think it's a good idea for games to be inherently difficult, especially with artificial difficulty like a hard timer that just kicks you back to the menu because you aren't as good as the devs want you to be. So i'm right there with you hoping that they won't add artificial difficulty to the mission because they couldn't figure out engaging mechanics.
Love the Murita assault rifles from starship trooper got one out in my shed along with star wars and many other sci-fi weapons from the Colonial Pulse Rifle to the Helghast M82 Assault Rifle.

Look at some of the videos, there's one where two riot cops straight up pick a woman up and carry her away. Then another with what looks to be a sea of riot police forcing people out of a park. Now, I am personally pro an armed civilian population (I'm American, that's pretty much a given) and I respect that some people don't agree with that. But a police state that is actively trampling on people's God given rights is exactly why an armed populace is needed.

This is beautiful. The original book is a discussion about the role of American military might and its responsibility, as well as the individuals responsibility for the world. Then the movie was made to be entertaining and gory, incorporate the violence suggested from the book yet at the same time mocking its militaristic and fascistic attitude. Then they made games just about killing of bugs. I love how adaptions slowly morph the material increasingly into mindless fun territory.
I would argue the book is more than just a commentary on the US Military, but I can see the themes there.
Wish there was some way to get the actual powered armor mobile infantry, faithfull to the original book. The action sequences in the book are an example of the most overpowered sci-fi unit ever and it was very fun.
It isn't over powered, there just comes a point where technological might is impossible to defeat, especially when you can't into tech to fight against it because bugs are dumb

Starship Troopers lends itself so well to this sort of game, I love the touch of riflemen being free, because that's the sortof mentality that the Federation operates on. Can't wait to play this, it's looking like alot of fun so far.

If you read the book you’ll know they were all wearing power armor with nukes and cluster missies attached. If you saw traitor of Mars the animated movie you’ll see how the mobile infantry were armored. On top of that you would see how the bugs would turn that armor to mulch and how much of a threat they were.

@@Unseengenie Same. The MI from the books are easily one of the most powerful human militaries in Science Fiction. The only ones who come to mind as anywhere close are the AEC from The Deathworlders, but that's mostly due to the ships being so much more powerful. Would love to see that fury represented properly.
Starcraft 2 has some fun custom modes I played a while ago where it´s basically this but the Zerg are players. Worked pretty well and you could definitely do it with this game. Maybe a bit too much for a small indie dev though.

an old russian warcraft map about starship troopers had the exact same concept! free troops but limited food capacity, and stronger units take more time to train, food is provided by capture points that humans need to defend and if they all get destroyed - humans lose.
I recently got ahold of the old Rpughneck series, writing surprisingly holds up especially well, can't say the same for the CGI.
Would love them to re-release it or put some money into it and reanimated the whole thing.

Every time I see a starship troopers thing I always hope there's gonna be some reference to the books mobile infantry. I don't even mind the movie as long as I pretend its completely disconnected, but lets be honest; the MI from the books were way better. Like, "probably a bit OP for 40k" better. One soldier per mile is dangerously close together. Carrying 2 kiloton nuclear rockets.
there's a reason for that; the book is fascist wank material, where the movies were (or started as) political satire of fascism. The entire thing is set up as basically Space Nazi Germany with a coat of Freedom paint. The MI in the book are absolutely presented too good, and the ones in the movies are probably closer to how it'd've been.

That's why the thing looks like it does. and the designers did take some queues from the OICW as I recall when designing the guns for ST.
I suppose the mecha suit stuff would be more canonically accurate, but I have to admit I'd kinda slightly prefer if the "marauder" we got was the one man army killing machines from the FPS game instead

One thing this game needs that RTS's need often is an auto-priority feature.
Like for example the riflemen, set their priority to be

Strongest
While snipers should have their priority be
Farthest
Weakest/ranged
So you can be more focused on formations rather than having to manage what everyone is shooting at and those spitters aren't just picking off your men because you're busy trying to keep them from getting eaten.

Even beyond the philosophy (which saddens me, seeing so many people butcher Heinlein's work in the comments), just the different weaponry would make an amazing RTS. Imagine Marauder infantry squads with flamers and pocket nukes, fighting bugs with actual weapons and hive tactics? I feel like this current game could have been about the Anglo-Zulu War instead, and the gameplay wouldn't be much different.

What's funny is I just re watched Star Ship Troopers 3 for the first time in YEARS just a few nights ago.
The only thing I can say that's negative on the jump-off is that like the movie, it's nothing like the book.

But yeah, you aren’t the only one seeing welcome similarities between this and IP’s unit management. The enemy mutations as you accomplish objectives is similar, too, and it’s a great way of scaling with the player’s new resources while not relying purely on more numbers.
Calling it right now, though: a later and _very_ resource intensive unity will be a Marauder drop, and I’m excited as all hell to see it.
Okay, played the demo and gone through all the available missions. One of the things I want to mention about the game I don't like is the Faci attitude and approach by High Command. Which in the novel of the setting, is far from what the Terran Federation and the MI is. Yeah I know their going off the movie side of things. But come on, people get their heads out of their arses about that! But otherwise, going to go through it again (a few times). And see how the game stacks overhaul.
I do agree, the spitters just wreck my Infantry worse than the warriors. And I'd like it if their was some target priority button or key I could use. Since snipers shooting warriors along with everyone else. Is just stupid on their part, and makes them just laborious.
But I have hopes for this game, and really don't want to be disappointed. I'll be doing my part.
We have five months and yea they definitely based this off the movie and I thought about the target priority too they are taking suggestions and feedback tho so if they act on it in the next five months it shuld be a good game

If I had one complaint, it's that they only used the movies aesthetic. Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles had some awesome designs that made it a perfect midpoint between the novel and the films. That might be more of a copyright issue and who currently holds what rights to which designs though.

People still think the first movie represents the idea Heinlein had for the mobile infantry, but in fairness the idea of a exo-suit that is a deus ex machina is hard to believe. If anything the mobile infantry is more akin to the Edge of Tomorrow suits, so that I wait with baited breath to see again.
