  • Join me in my workshop as I custom build a single speed road bike, complete with carbon forks and super wide carbon flat bars.
Stronglight cranks, Campagnolo Brakes and Veloflex Tyres complete the build.
I will talk you through the custom build process from start to finish - clean and prep to final pictures.
I based the build around a pre-production Planet X Track frame, with carbon aero forks - and with a flip flop hub can easily be ridden fixed gear as well.

Very nice build. I've built only one single speed bike and I had to use a longer drop rear calliper to allow the wheel to move back for correct chain tension. It's a problem I didn't anticipate. Yours is really elegant with matching campy brakes.

Thanks mate, it’s a great feeling to build something with parts you already have!

I’m on a surly steamroller, 700mm wide bars, it’s a 49cm frame, 80mm stem, it’s a straight up tracklocross bike, it’s the perfect get about for my area, the most I’ve done on it in 1 go is 20 miles, being in the uk country, some of the hills were gnarly, didn’t put my feet on the ground

Sounds ace, love a Surly Bike! Check out my singlespeed gravel bike if you get a min - that handles UK trails so well too!

    Hello !
Nice bike ! I'm still not sure, but I might "singlespeed-ize" (sic) my Fausto Coppi, but it has vertical dropouts so it's not as easy as a track bike to have the right chain tension. And of course, I wouldn't want to use a chain tensioner ! :D Half link chains could be the solution (or if I'm lucky, I could find a magic ratio) !
I could also try to find a eccentric bottom bracket but I don't want to break the piggy bank. Well, I'll have to think a little more. I have other interrogations and I think your video replied to one of them : is that possible to use caliper brakes with the brake levers you use ? Seems that it's possible. I still have cantilever levers from another bike I could use. From what I read, V-brake levers wouldn't do well because they are not made to pull the same amount of cable compared to cantilever levers.
I'd like to know if you can tell me what chainring you use. Is it one that comes from multispeed crankset or one for only one speed ? I'd like to use mine because it's from a Campa crankset with a 135 BCD and it's hard to find for example a narrow-wide chainring with this BCD. But I don't think it would be good on the long term because if I choose the half link chain solution (and this chain would be a one speed one), I'm not sure it could match. But again, I don't want to break the piggy bank (or not too much) ! :D So, I must find the most economic, yet technically viable solution.
    W.

Hi thanks for watching, and I’ll try to help answer some of your questions, firstly you can re-use any single chainring you have so don’t worry about that,
If you’ve got little room for movement, go straight for a half link chain - they’re a godsend and work on anything.
As for brake levers, just make sure they have the right pull ratio and you’ll be fine - you will know if they’re wrong as the braking performance won’t be very good!

@Downhillsmoothtarmac Hi, I'm very late for my answer (I hadn't activated notifications so I didn't see your message, I'm sorry).
Finally, the Coppi is still untouched, but I found another frame which geometry is close. It's an handmade Raymond Clerc frame (french framemaker who lived near Lyon, in France). It has vertical dropouts and I've found a magic ratio I could use with half-link chain. Everything is perfectly fine (3.23 ratio - 42x13 - so not too hard to ride and definately not too slow).
I bought a Campagnolo crankset with two chainrings and I kept one to use with the rear sproket. Everything is fine too even with the large half-link chain and no problem with the narrow-wide system I evoked in my previous comment. I also went Campagnolo with the brakes (the exact same than those I have on my Coppi - a 1996 Veloce set -, they are light and efficient).
And as I thought, I paired them with the MTB brake levers I had lying around and again, everything is perfectly fine, the bike stops very well (I took some time to adjust the brakes the best I could so that everything is perfectly secure and powerful - powerful yet progressive, very glad with the result).
The result is stunning, a rigid and very light bike - more or less 17,6 pounds (depends if I use a bottle holder or not). The frame is aluminium, chrome-plated and brazed-wielded, a true gem ! :)
