Icy Winter Gravel Bike Ride - First ride of 2025
In this extra mid week episode, we are braving the icy weather for an icy gravel bike ride - with a helping of bicycle ramblings from me!
I’m riding my Genesis CDA 10, and this blog is all about just getting out for a few miles with good mates and enjoying cycling.
Grab a brew and sit back for a quick ride in the winter cold.

Building a resto mod winter road bike - 80s tribute to my bro
มุมมอง 3.2K9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
In this episode I’m building an awesome resto mid winter road bike, and a tribute to my big brothers bike of the 1980s! The plan is to take a quality Reynolds 531 frame and make a resto mod Raleigh equipe replica that will handle winter riding. Now I know I’m still using some carbon rims here - a bit Gucci for a winter trainer, but I was given them by Pickerings bikes, so I thought - why not!! ...
Building an awesome 650b Randonneur bike for long rides!!
มุมมอง 2.9K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
I’ve decided in the episode to build a randonneur style bike on a bit of a whim - after I found some 650b tyres cheap on eBay! So I’ve taken this Roger Page frame, that’s I’ve owned for more than 8 years and am transforming it into a 650b mile muncher - ready for long days in the retro saddle. I’ve specced this one up with loads of Campagnolo, and some centre pull brakes. I’ve also converted th...
Upgrading my flat bar gravel bike and going for a night ride
มุมมอง 1.2K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
In todays episode I’m upgrading my flat bar gravel bike with some spicy upgrades, in the shape of some Shimano XTR, hydraulic brakes and huge 47c Specialized rhombus tyres. With winter closing in, the test ride is a night ride type affair on the local trails, but before that I need to handle mating promax calipers to older XTR levers, do the internal routing, add all the 9 speed gubbins and tal...

Building and riding a Flat Bar Gravel Bike - how does it compare to drop handlebars?
มุมมอง 2.3K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
In today’s jam packed episode I’m building a gravel bike with flat bars to see how it compares to riding with drop handlebars. I bought this Pinnacle Arkose D3 frame and have kitted it out with parts I have lying around the workshop. As this is a smaller frame than I normally ride, I spent entirely too long worrying about the length of seatpost, while at the same time going in search of 90s sty...

    I love such winter builds with full size mudguards. I have a similar one - a peugeot ferrara. A sturdy rig out of Columbus tubes which I've been trashing in all terrain only during winters for the last 10 years. the frame still holds on although last year I had to do some bodged paint touchups here and there as the rust started to chew it in. Storing it in a moist basement does not help too. I suppose it looks terrible on the inside but as long as it does not rust through I'll keep trashing it. I am also using cantilevers (xlc). They are all ok, but in no comparison to discs, all the more hydraulic ones. The only issue I have with them is the front fork falling into nasty back and forth vibrations under strong braking, but I was told this is typical for canti brakes as when applied they effectively bow the fork when the cable is pulled upwards and this is why v-brakes were invented.

    • @Downhillsmoothtarmac
      @Downhillsmoothtarmac 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s what’s so great about old steel, it just keeps going and going, plus it’s comfortable and versatile too! I’m sure your Peugeot will keep going for a long while yet - you could always spray a little rust inhibitor inside to keep it from deteriorating. As for your fork vibration, help is at hand! If you switch you cable outer stop from the head tube to the top of the fork with a mount there it will solve all your problems - I had to do this with my single speed gravel bike and it worked a treat

    • @qwertyazerty2137
      @qwertyazerty2137 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Downhillsmoothtarmac thanks. In fact I have such a cable stop from tektro which is installed at the top of the fork crown where the mudguard top retention bolt goes through. I haven't actually thought if these vibrations are gone. For sure they were present when I had a cable stop underneath the stem as a counter spacer between top bearing locknut and the upper race with that notch going into the cut out in the steerer tube. I got to check it out

    • @Downhillsmoothtarmac
      @Downhillsmoothtarmac 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you cable stop at the fork it should in theory remove the judder, which is caused by the fork wobbling over the ground and slowly applying and releasing the brake as the cable pressure is changed due to the distance between the calipers and the cable stop being able to change

    • @qwertyazerty2137
      @qwertyazerty2137 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Downhillsmoothtarmac and this is probably why this problem is not the case with v-brakes in which the cable stop is right next to the caliper and Not attached to the steerer tube. But, as much as I like to ride on this bike, its comfort is incomparable to my modern aluminium gravel bike with a carbin fork and wheels. The stiffness at the handlebar, fork and bottom bracket and overall vibrations' dampening and comfort(also thanks to wider tires ran at lower pressure because of tubeless) is noticebly better. Not to mention vastly superior braking thanks to hydraulic disc brakes.

    I know, I know, you said it's your bike so you can do what you like with it! _However_ , the fact that a Galaxy lurks beneath is niggling away at my brain despite a smart end-result. The important thing is that it's being kept on the road rather than gathering dust somewhere (or worse!), so I'll console myself with that thought as I tuck myself into bed tonight 😁. Looking forward to your next one, sir 👍 !

    • @Downhillsmoothtarmac
      @Downhillsmoothtarmac 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Unfortunately there is only a stop at the front of the frame, so without going through the bend, it would need a zip tie at the back end to hold the cable - so I thought my solution was a bit cleaner, plus it doesn’t affect the performance of the brake either

    Really great, thorough, yet concise video. Wow! I had a couple questions: 1. How long do you think this took? I am a beginning with bike repairs but not an expert. 2. How much do you estimate the addition cost of this process? 3. Do you think it would be better to just buy a Creo? I am looking at a Vado 4 for $1500 US which seems like a good deal.

    • @Downhillsmoothtarmac
      @Downhillsmoothtarmac 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey thanks for watching! So time wise this takes me a good three hours to complete in reality, but it’s pretty straightforward if you’re careful - but it depends on your skill level really. Cost all depends on the groupset you choose to fit, so you’d have to shop around - if you went for hydro levers you could re use the calipers if you stay with shimano gearing. If you can afford a Creo, definitly go for it! However I went for the Vado as it was much cheaper and I was happy with it flat bar originally too Whichever way you go, the SL bikes are great!

    Nice work Geoffrey ! Did Martin get they levers from our workshop in Bristol ? I'm sure we had some of those funky things kicking around down here! Love your videos mate .

    is the turbo Vado upright and comfortable or, is it very similar to a road bike?

      With the flat bars or with the drop conversion, it’s very comfortable for the most part. It’s the aluminium fork that causes the most discomfort to be honest - which is why I’ve added a redshift stem

    Hmmm, I wonder why there's a CTC sticker on a road bike ... interesting.

    • @Downhillsmoothtarmac
      @Downhillsmoothtarmac หลายเดือนก่อน

      The CTC (Cyclists Touring Club) was pretty popular way back I believe. As someone who used to deal and restore vintage bikes, that sticker was usually a warning that the bike would be worn out and hiding lots of bodges and repairs 🤣🤣

      @@Downhillsmoothtarmac I'll bear that in mind if I ever open my own shop 😅 ! Just thought it was bizarre to see a touring sticker on a bike not made for touring, is all. Maybe the old owner had one lying around and simply wanted to show off CTC membership...

      You’re right it’s an odd choice but the previous owner had done some odd stuff to it! Including a triple chainset, extra bottle bosses and bullhorn bars!

    £25? TWENTY-FIVE QUID?! Were you wearing a mask and black-and-white striped jumper when you agreed that price?! That's insane! Lovely build/service, though. Like how the original parts came up especially, always marvellous to have gleaming old-school bits 😁.

      Hey thanks man, Yep it was £25, I even offered to pay the chap more, but he honoured the price - really decent bloke selling loads of bikes basically
