When the game was first announced, there was a lot of scepticism among old fans in Japan, as they thought FE was a hardcore strategy RPG that had nothing to do with anime-style school life.
However, some time after its release, the game's reputation grew enormously.
This was because the bright and shiny school life allowed the misery of the war in the second half of the game to be portrayed in a higher resolution.
If by higher resolution you mean greater emotional impact!
you mean people were skeptical about the games after awakening and fates?? No way! Thank whatever god that exists we didn't get another one of those.

I'm dealing with some hardships right now and the lyrics just make me feel even worse. 10/10 would reccomend. In all seriousness tho it's a bueatiful song with lots of meaning behind it, even if that meaning makes my heart wrench and give me s*icidal toughts i still like to listen to this from time to time. Just to make myself remember what i'll never experience.

@@4ns00 I could be wrong since golden deer was the first route I did and I haven't played it since but I thought Rhea only saves you from the missiles in black eagle church route. I think she doesn't come with you in GD, and doesn't actually have a death scene, but she's dying and can't be married in that route so I assume so

SPOILERS
VW's end, while sad, has the best outcome for all:
- Claude reforms the monarchy system and stops Fodlan's isolationism to other nations. Even Edelgard mentions on VW that Claude and her share the same goal to change the broken system. In BL, the status quo remains.
- The church of Seiros loses its power. The faith remains, but the institution loses its grips on the government.
- Rhea dies from her injuries, so the crests are no more.
- TWSITD and Nemesis/10 elites are defeated, so it finally puts to rest the bloody past of Fodlan.

@@creeeamy7133 Edelgard attacks a neutral power and slaughters their numbers as they attempt to retreat. You HAVE to kill Judith before she flees. That's a war crime. And she does this in crimson flower, the route where she's 'good'.
@@skysnow2495 it is a neither a crime to declare war on a neutral state or to kill retreating soldiers.
A retreat is not a surrender, they're not helpless neither are they prisoners, they're soldiers fleeing, retreating to a different position to potential fight again. Not a war crime. You cannot kill those who have surrendered, but you are well within your rights to kill retreating forces
It's also not illegal to fight a neutral state, an act of war is not a war crime, while neutral states have greater protections they're not immune to war, it's also worth remembering the Alliance only feigned neutrality to bide time.
This is also assuming war crimes exist in fodland, and also if its even reasonable to hold what is closer to a medieval society to laws created in the 20th century than the standards of our own medieval time.
There's no sign that the Alliance was biding it's time in Crimson Flower. It's simply trying to stay in existence until Edelgard attacks it and slaughters retreating soldiers. You could say that you know they're biding time because of the other routes. But then I can mention all the shit Edelgard does in the other routes when she doesn't have the proffeser to minimize her war crime tendencies.
And we can hold them to higher standards because it's estabalished that many people know better. Seteth, Claude and Lorenz are very anti war crime and hold major positions of power.

That is not entirely true. Lysithea suffers the same ailment as Edel BUT in her paired ending with Lin, he manages to remove her second crest. There’s no reason to believe Lin wouldn’t preform this operation for Edelgard

@jonathan sernholt Basically, the experiments TWSITD performed on Edelgard, Lysithea, and a whole bunch of other kids to force multiple Crests onto people were not just cruel, but fatal. Pretty much everyone from the failed experiments were killed by them or died not long after.
Edelgard & Lysithea are the only two successes, but there's two problems: the body isn't meant to handle the strain of two Crests at once, and the experiments were run by some _super_ fucky people using, among other things, some _super duper_ fucky dark magic.
The end result of all this endless tampering with the human body is a second Crest, yes, but also a _dramatically_ shortened lifespan.
Like, it's basically _guaranteed_ that they have a limited time left to live before their bodies shut down from the, well, everything. The reason Edelgard must act on her world domination plan so quickly and why Lysithea is so relentless in her pursuit of further growth despite still being so young is because they have a limited timeframe. They don't know when it'll happen, they just know that it _will_ happen.
Essentially, Edelgard and Lysithea are attempting to speedrun life. Edelgard has to realize her ambitions (for revenge, her own satisfaction, a chance to see the future she's dreamt of, etc.) and Lysithea has to get as high up as she can (to search for a cure, to make her mark, or at least to help her parents as much as possible) before they drop dead.
It's more or less implied that neither of them had any more than perhaps 10-30 years left in them when the experiments were done on them as kids. Considering we meet them as teenagers/young adults by the start of the game, that range is even smaller.
I don't remember where to find this info for Edelgard, but I'm fairly sure Lysithea's higher-tier supports, especially Linhardt and Byleth, have at least pieces of the story.

@@danieltobin4498 Not to mention all the work Hanneman is doing on Crest Research himself, and that he and Manuela are seen as being canonically Empire-leaning considering Edelgard's the only one of the 3 lords they can Support with.

Theyakate to be fair, awakening was more of a send off than a tragic story since that was supposed to be the last fire emblem game. Can’t defend Fates though, the game’s trash

That lyrics hits hard every time, remembering the ending of Azure Moon. The way Byleth just sadly takes Dimitri's hand with that "there's nothing left here" expression breaks me every time

First time I heard it I thought the words were just generic, then I realised they were meant to be Edelgard’s words it really hit home.
The song is not for no reason called "Lady of Hresvelg" called in the original translation
I love it, and yet... I can't help but feel hypocrisy in it. "Time" didn't betray anyone, Edel. You made your decisions. We can argue their merits, but they were yours.

TugaAvenger I think she made those decisions because she didn’t have enough “time” to accomplish her ideals. Her lifespan is reduced like Lysithea (it’s probably why she says that she will look for a new emperor in her S support conversation).

I feel like I’m in the minority of people who prefer this credits version to the original, but dang it’s so good, it lets the singer really perform with her voice, rather than spitting out words to keep pace with the Japanese version in the faster version.

This is the in-game version. You can tell because it has the exact same time as the Japanese version (next video in the full OST playlist).
When English VAs try to replicate Japanese voices instead of doing what suits the English language better, you get stuff like Metroid: Other M.

You know. I'd almost cry hearing this song after finishing the Silver Snow story. The way that both Edelgard and Dimitri (also Rhea) are dead while Claude just vanished and never to be seen again is literally heart breaking. It makes you feel alone after losing those you care for.
That's why I wish that route had everyone come together to fight twsitd. All the house lords fight them as well, and rhea and her family (seteth and flayn) leaves fodlan (of their own accord)

That’s awesome. Something that baffles me is someone still hating Edelgard even after BL, which is the route that makes her look the worst. But if you pay attention, there are so many sympathetic instances. People never pay attention lmao they need the most simplistic writing to ever understand anything

Three Houses was my first Fire Emblem game and my god, I was in tears by the end. The story in this game is amazing and the character building is impeccable. The way the game shoves the consequences of war right back in your face is so powerful, watching your house leader deteriorate mentally as they’re forced to confront the harsh realities that come with fighting for what you believe in.
Simply incredible.

scrolled through comments in looking for this song, i clicked because i forgot what part that was. I heard the heart beats, almost instantly teared up
if you listen really closely you can hear the heartbeat the whole time in the background. put your phone up to your ear during the intro, it’s pretty audible there
oh what i would give to experience this masterpiece for the first time again. such a magical and beautiful game, ive never been this moved by a game before, and probably never will.

Everyone here be debating if you should've sided with Edelgard or Claude for a better future, when really, if you just let Hanneman and Lysithea spend time together, they find the formula to abolish crest monarchy fast enough that even Lysithea can live longer.
I was gonna romance Leonie in the golden deer route but ended up romancing Lysethia in hopes that she would be able to live longer

Much as I like Hanneman and Lysithea, even they recognize that Edelgard (and Claude) has goals far beyond just crest reform. Without the war, Claude and Edelgard can't END RACISM, or expose and defeat the Agarthans controling 2/3 of the continent. Whichever one of those two you side with, Fodlan is united under an experienced leader capable of delegating and keeping others' interests at heart, and working with neighbors in Brigid and Almyra.

5:23 I feel like at this part, they should’ve ended it with that one official artwork of all the students where it looks like they’re taking a picture. I feel like that would make it even more emotional, and that Edelgard thinks of that moment

@@RandomGuy-mw5mwthank you, and nah I think it can work. No one can technically die during the academy phase because even if you do get your units lost, the units you lose technically die during the invasion (or some of them return home) so they all would still spend enough time to have that photo.

I think it would’ve been so bitter sweet if they added that into the credits because it makes the player remember that they were all friends at some point, even Edelgard who secretly did actually enjoy her time at the academy and wish she could stay (but she knew she had a goal to fulfill)
Major Spoiler Alert
The story of Three Houses is very dark.
You have Edelgard, tortured as a child and watching all her siblings die or lose their minds in front of her.
You have Dimitri, who watched his entire family slaughtered in front of him, and bore survivor's guilt for years from that tragedy.
You have Claude, who was discriminated against literally everywhere he went, even in the game itself.
You have all of them in command of massive armies of people.
They all fight each other in a massive, bloody war, sending even themselves and their closest allies into battle, and having to see those allies die around them, all for a cause which they believe is justified.
The only reason any one of them emerges definitively victorious is because their teacher was forced to pick a side, and the professor picked them over the others.
If not for Byleth's part in the story, they all would have ripped each other apart to the point where the victor couldn't even call it a true success. They would have lost too much for their success to even matter- For El, there's nothing left to reform, for Dimitri, there's nothing left to protect, and for Claude, there's nothing left to unify.
The point of the game is to show the moral grayness and ambiguity of war, how nobody sees themselves as a villain, and how war turns us *all* into monsters.

Edit 2: Rhea had her entire people slaughtered in front of her eyes by a man using a sword made from the spine of her own mother/creator, waged an entire war against the man who killed her mother and kin to kill him with her own hands, and has spent the last millennium trying to resurrect/reincarnate her mother just to see her again (doing some things of questionable nature in the process). I would write more on Rhea, but because she disappeared for the latter half of the game and I think I already covered most of it, I'll just leave it at that.
This is beautiful, in the game my pick was Edelgard (I did play he other routes too, CF was just the route I chose as my fav and my personal canon) and it broke my heart every time, I wish I could save them all, but in the end I reached for Edelgards hand and the reformed system.
Nobody gets to win, everybody loses something. Fire Emblem really wanted to drive home the idea that war is a game of lost stakes, rather than gains.
On the other hand, we really went to the nines with the whole bloodlines thing. If they play it up that much in the next game, we're in for a real treat; it was a wonderful source of character development here and it's never gotten that kind of attention in Fire Emblem before, so it was a really refreshing stance to see it all happen in one game like that.
I’m not a fan of Dimitri, Claude is really good, but Edelgard is easily my favorite.
Max Richards That’s interesting, Edelgard is my absolute favourite and I love her but I’ve never disliked Dimitri, but the weird thing is that after doing CF I played AM, and somehow AM made me like Dimitri less and love Edelgard more.

As the Ashen Wolf comes out of hiding from their cave, they howl to the clear Azure Moon... The Silver Snow falls, covering the lands, and as the Verdant Wind blows the snow away... Only then, will the Crimson Flower bloom under the light of those who helped it.

Took my time to finish FEngage, maxed a ton of friendships spend more than 100h on my first run and i can say it was a great game a good FE, but now that i finished Engage i can tell without hesitation that Three houses is best the FE released since the modern FE era, the attack choreographies, the cool animations of Engage can't mark you as much as the will of these young students to face their destiny, even if they have to kill peoples with who they studied and shared their meals younger.
Byleth was not as much at the center of the story than alear, but i still prefer him, because he was empty and each of his students filled in him a part of them, they were all ready to die for him, not because he was a great being or a great military figure, but because he was their favorite professor with whom they felt close, who changed them as much as they changed him, they swore to meet once again when they will all be older to enjoy again a moment all together, but they never expected they would change the destiny of their world together.
The political part that you could see from different point of view made the story better, because it was not just dark vs light, it was
just 3 young lord with their own ideas their own dreams and they were ready to die for them and thoses of their peoples, on a continent full of mysteries and secret.
3Houses can sit proudly as one of the best FE never made not because he had a better graphism than the previous or more possibilty but because this game was special and could make you feel deeply tied to his world and their characters.
I went for El right away. All I knew was that she was one of the four wlw relationships you could pursue and I'd already seen a lot of wonderful fanart. But getting to know her through the game, I fell for her, for the way she looked at Byleth, the way their spirits intertwined, the way she longed to reach out and share her pain, her burdens, and her dreams with someone else. It was my first playthrough and it felt like she and the rest of the Eagles really drew out a sense of humanity in someone who struggled to feel anything, who never had a strong connection to anyone.
Afterwards I ended up playing the Golden Deer route and when it came time to confront El my heart broke seeing the forlorn longing in her eyes, that things might have been different, that Byleth could have walked alongside her. If I hadn't had things spoiled from getting the game a year after it came out, I think I would have liked playing the Silver Snow route first not knowing I could have sided with her and then go back to the beginning and make things different.
God I love this game
This is exactly how it went for me. The falling for Edelgard on the first play, refusing to do Silver Snow cause I already knew about the route split having got the game and console late. Then going Golden Deer, choosing Hilda to S-support with Byleth, that route was fantastic as well, despite having to kill Edelgard, I enjoyed beating up Those Who Slither.
Now I find myself playing on Dimitri's route. I just finished playing Gronder Field post timeskip. Just wow. I won't say what happened cause those who played it know what I'm saying and I don't wanna spoil it. Never playing Silver Snow. I've played Crimson Flower twice now cause I was a noob the first time and didn't recruit anyone.
I was not ready for all the emotional damage i would have to go through playing this game. And of course i had to start with Edelgard's route.
Fuck/Love my life.

Edelgard is easily in my top five fictional characters. She's so fascinatingly nuanced, and her depiction of trauma and PTSD are some of the best I've seen in a game - hell, just in a piece of media. She's definitely my favorite "villain". Of course, I love characters like GLaDOS, with all her snarkiness and sarcasm, but she's not really a nuanced villain. She kills because she's a sadist, not because killing people is somehow a means to an end like how Edelgard sees the effects of her war.
I've never played the game in full, but I've encountered all the major plot details in some way or another, and I fully agree, Edelgard just completely steals the show, giving a performance that's so devastating in its vulnerability and yet so unflappable in its resolve and poise... all of which is to say, I think it's the most badass character arc I've ever seen. No amount of flashy swordsmanship can compete with the sheer fucking mental fortitude on display here.
I think Edelgard as a villain is simply phenomenal. What I take issue with is when people claim she is the hero.

God I love El so much, this song in particular makes me going against her in other routes so much more difficult. Easily one of my favorite lords of the Fire Emblem franchise, and that's saying something considering I've basically played all main games.
I played GD > BL and now BE siding with Edelgard and man it just feels wrong... Since she was the villain in my first playthroughs I just haven't been able to get as attached to her as I did to Dimitri. In my head Blue Lions will always be the "right" story path. :P

@@infinitelewis6482 In other routes Edelgard is definitely very much played up as a villain. But thats only because you're (Byleth) isn't there to guide her and be with her. Plus, imo, just because a character is villainous doesn't mean you cant like them, but that's just my opinion.

I still remember what it was like beating this game for the first time back in 2019, and my most recent playthrough after playing it for over 2,000 hours, both as clear as day, even though I've put it down for now. I'll remember this game for the rest of my life.

Having finished Silver Snow, here are my thoughts on each path:
- My favorite class dynamic was with Golden Deer. Being my first class, I connected with all them the most.
- The story in Blue Lions was very compelling, and it hit a lot of emotional spots.
- I think El might have my favorite house leader dynamic. Just, after fighting and killing her twice, playing her route and siding with her, you see that she really is a good person with good intentions and her connection with Byleth was very well done.
- Silver Snow was defiantly a bit of a let down, especially since I'd grown to not really like Rhea that much after Crimson Flower. I hated having to betray Edelgard, and at the end of it all, getting almost nothing new out of it, most of the reveals I'd already figured out after playing the game three times, and because Rhea spends all of part 2 in captivity, I didn't get more attached to her to make it all feel worth it.
I think for SS it depends on what you play first.
I played SS before CF, and I just couldn't side with Edelgard without feeling guilty about betraying the church, as you probably felt with El during your SS playtrough.
SS and VW have too many similarities, to actual seperate them as distinct routes.
I played SS last and I can agree, kind of a let down. But all the other routes were great to play. I’d say my favorite house is either the Blue Lions or Golden Deer. I like all the house leaders equally, Claude for wanting to unify the world, Dimitri for wanting to protect the weak and for his arc in AM, and Edelgard for wanting to bring equality to the people.
Did you come to like Seteth more on Silver Snow, at least?
@@wanderlustwarrior Here's the thing with Seteth, when I started my first playthrough (Golden Deer) I didn't like him *at first* because I didn't trust him, but once we saved Flayn and he was genuinely grateful, I was like "ok, you're alright". So yeah, I liked Seteth since my first playthrough. But by the time I got to Silver Snow, there wasn't anything new when it came to Seteth, he was pretty much the same as he was in my other playthroughs, so having him be the main side character of Silver Snow didn't really do anything for me. And his complete loyalty to Rhea annoyed me a bit, since after playing Crimson Flower, I knew that she was a psycho. That being said, I liked him enough already that I had my female Byleth for Silver Snow romance him.
This theme hit pretty hard on silver snow, since the first time you hear this, all the houses are together and now everyone is either dead or missing (except of course your units) and you kinda just sit there for 7 minutes pondering what happened

Okay no. Rhea saved Byleth's life as a last request from their mother before passing, or both would've died.
STILL, that doesn't give Rhea any right over Byleth's life, such as demanding they surrender their bodies to be taken over by Sothis. It was still fucked up of Rhea to pretend that.
Agreed, on the routes where she's portrayed as the villain even more she does bad shit sure, but she's easily one of the best lords of the Fire Emblem franchise. You either hate her or absolutely love her.
@@stickfigure8416 Tricking Byleth into sitting on the throne so that Sothis can take over is already completely unforgivable to me. Whever she did it to save Byleth or not is irrelevant, because in the end, she still saw them as a sack of meat for her mommy to take.
It also causes me to believe that she never really intended to save the child in the first place, she only saw what she could gain from it. It also causes me to doubt her story (I mean, Byleth is compatible with Sothis, and for some reason, their mother and them just so happen to conveniently die in childbirth? Jeralt didn't trust it, and I don't trust it either.)

As someone who knew nothing about Fire Emblem to calling Three Houses their favorite 2019 game, I love and appreciate it as one of Nintendo’s best franchises.

I just beat my first playthrough as the Golden Deer, and this song just blew me the fuck away. When the beat dropped I lost my shit at how hard this slaps. I just needed to say that, badly. Holy fucking shit what a game, and what a soundtrack. I've been rocking this song over and over in the days since. WOW.

we all have differing opinions on the morality and justification of each lord, but personally I love all three, because they're all different kinds of tragedy.
Edelgard's route is tragic because while you achieved your goal, there was so much bloodshed, and Edie's likely not going to live to see if anything good comes from it. so yeah, maybe it was a pointless war, but maybe it wasn't. it's ambiguous.
Dimitri's route is tragic because he's been ripped apart by war, mental illness, trauma and blood. his step sister is dead, likely the last living family he had left, and she betrayed him. but it's a more upwards route because you're trying to move past it. despite that, it's still going to be a long, harrowing path.
Claude's route, despite being the most optimistic, also has its share of sorrow. both Edelgard and Dimitri die, and both Adrestia and Faerghus are left without their heirs. and said heirs are arguably at their worst in VW. it's as if the game is saying "no matter what side you take, someone has to die".
because that's tragedy, isn't it? the characters do have a solution. there is a way to a happy ending. but due to circumstances, their own flaws, and the narrative, you know they'd never take that chance.

I say this as I'm doing a half-assed Blue Lion casual run to get all the cutscenes, music, and the chance to romance Dedue… Which I'm probably going to do with a church run to do the same with Seteth instead.
But then after all that… Crimson Flower. One more time. Just to hear Color of Sunrise again.
Her route is literally the worst case scenario for Fodlan. She acts exactly like a feudal lord from the middle ages, stifling rebellion and oppositional ideals. Do you think the entire continent will be content with being ruled over after being plowed through and destruction everywhere? No. She will live the rest of her life dodging assasination and fighting for control of the people instead of working among them. The Agarthans can fire javelins of light at her palace whenever they want the moment she poses a threat to them. Not to mention Nemesis and his 10 elites. Without any knowledge of the events of the Fodlan of old, Edelgard will surely lose to the CEO of racism and lead the world into new Nazi Germany.
@@demosthenes995 I mean comparing her to a feudal lord seems a bit much. In her route she says she wants to abolish the old system where only those with Crests can take control. She doesn't care about whether a noble or commoner takes a seat of power as long as they get the job done correctly. Also, at the very end of her route on the ending cutscenes they mention how the Empire slaughtered the remnants of the Agarthans and most likely taking care of Nemesis before he awoke. Another thing is that immediately after wiping out the Agarthans Edelgard steps down as Emperor (at least in my route). The main takeaway from this is that under the Empire everyone has an equal chance at being anything they want, whether it's a simple job as a blacksmith or as prime minister all while being safe from the non-existent Agarthans.

I saw someone once complain the Edelgard should have had dialogue when fighting her that reflected this song in a way. That she showed at least some remorse at having betrayed the trust of her friends from the academy. But that's not what this song is. This song is Edelgard during her days at the academy regretting the actions and deeds that she feels she must do. She knows her path and will not waver, but doesn't want to walk that path alone however, she will if she must.
And with the release of Engage today, I’m sorry to say that Engage did not fill the massive shoes Three Houses left behind.

I played 3H a lot. And loved it. Loved Edelgard also.
But it has flaws. 3H models, background and UI are terrible, for example. Great lore, weird story beats here and there.
Engage is too dumbed down in story department, but it has improved gameplay, maps, models, UI.
@@Lucisev_ I can agree except for UI. The UI and QoL feels like a step down as the things like classes are in Inventory and References are the support stuff. It’s vague in its description. Plus the game doesn’t properly explain how class changing works as I’ve seen people not know the weapon requirements are gotten from Emblems. The red lines in battle are a massive step down from 3Hand you can’t see support bonuses in battle except by going to unit details. And it’s biggest problem, resource management. Resources are so scarce in Engage that it’s a grind to get them like $, SP, Materials, etc which really hurts the strong customization imo.

Doubt it would be possible, the main reason Edelgard wants the war is because due to her crests she has a shortened lifespan (though linhardt does find a way to remove the second one in her and Lysithea) but there still is no way she would just sit back, she hates how Fodlan is too much.
