Glad you guys reacted to this film; I've always felt RDJ's Sherlock Holmes films are underappreciated. This movie has great action and charm. So many new films struggle to create genuine dynamism and enjoyable relationships. The second is even better!
@@andrewlopez1906 the second one has a much better villain which raises the stakes, whilst the plot is strong and the relationships are well established. I think the problem for the trilogy RDJ intended was that you can't top Moriarty in the Sherlock stories so where do you go for the next villain??
Same! People always whine "But Sherlock Holmes isn't an action hero!" Yes, that's what makes this a unique interpretation. If they were just going to do it the same as every other Sherlock Holmes film or TV series, why bother making it? Plus, people really on the scratch the surface of how impressive RDJ's performance was. What impressed me the most was that in the scene where he's speaking French, he's actually speaking French with an English accent. The way a British person who learned French as a second language would. An American speaking French with a British accent. That's incredible attention to detail, not to mention just being able to do it in the first place!
Sherlock Holmes was a big influence on Batman. Bill Finger specifically cited Holmes as a model for Bruce Wayne's detective and logical reasoning skills. So if the movie's reminding you of Batman, it's definitely doing its job properly.
Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) has also played Sherlock Holmes in the BBC tv series Sherlock, which means at least two different major MCU characters have been Sherlock Holmes
On the other hand, the DCEU has had Henry Cavill (Superman - who played Holmes in the Enola Holmes movie), and Lucy Liu (Kalypso in Shazam 2 - who playede Watson in Elementary)
Robert Downey jr. was absolutely perfect as Sherlock Holmes!! This is such a fantastic movie! You definitely have to react to the sequel, A Game of Shadows.
44:40 The music for these Sherlock Holmes films and the Dark Knight films was all composed by Hans Zimmer. Maybe that lent to the subtle connection in some way. Different styles of the same artist.
To an extent, although the approach of both soundtracks is a bit different (I love the music for the chase in the sewers). The themes and melodies on Batman are more in the "epic", while Holmes plays more with the ideas of the playful, sarcastic and odd; even when it also tries to deliver the sense of action (it's not just a concept, Hans Zimmer has said they had fun doing unspeakable things to a piano in order to get that "toing-y" vibe to the music... an interesting approach that speaks of Zimmer's versatilty). The other part that helps to make this connection is that the Sherlock Holmes novels were, partially, the inspiration for Batman's detective skills in the comics (something that's been addressed by the original creators of the character, and later on by DC Comics itself). Holmes and Batman's connection lies hidden in the plots long before Zimmer had a chance to make both works :).

Great choice! Sure, this is still a Hollywood movie, but the performances were good, Robert Downey Jr. captured the soul of Holmes, his eccentricities and physicality fairly well, and the film was grounded in the work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. (In one story, Homes unbent a metal bar which had been bent by a large, angry man, and in another story he mentioned that he was a practitioner of bartitsu, which is a British stick or sword based self defense system based on boxing, savate and jujitsu.) Speaking of Sherlock Holmes a game of shadows this is the epic showdown and first confrontation between Holmes and his deadliest enemy Professor James Moriarty
You should really consider watching the six "mission impossible" movies if you haven't already, from 1996 to 2018, before the seventh one comes out :)
I prayed that you watched the sequel which Game of Shadows.
Please. PLEASE watch the sequel. It's just as great if not better.
If you ladies want a REALLY great version of Sherlock Holmes, watch the series “Sherlock”, starring two more familiar MCU faces: Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman! 🔎
There are only 13 episodes, with each about 90 minutes. But it takes place in modern times.
This version stays more true to the original stories, but both versions (and both actors) are great.
Thanks for your reaction!
