“No girl wants to marry a doctor who can’t tell if a man’s dead or not” is delivered so well! Robert Downey Jr plays brilliant, aloof, self-centered so well!
Perfect way to show Sherlock's brilliance. Him thinking out what he was going to do in slow motion, before we see it done in real time is beautifully done cinematography.
I would've preferred if he actually explained anything before the end though. They do a similar thing in the Sherlock show, where they don't explain a single thought Sherlock is having or plan he's making until the end and we're supposed to be blown away by his brilliance, but that's just not how it is in the novels. He's constantly teaching Watson, and we go through the steps with him. How in the world are we supposed to get the ancient Egyptian cement recipe or the water activated poison or the fake rain spout soaking him in kerosene while his gun has a modified bullet in the chamber just from watching along? We don't even see the rain spout. Taking the viewer along for the mystery is something that mystery novels do well but they always get wrong in live action. You're supposed to see the elements, having the opportunity to put them together yourself but if you haven't, they reveal it and you go "how on Earth didn't I see it?" Still a pretty good movie tbough, like the second one better.
I love how they portray Holmes, Watson and Lestrade in these movies, because it's far more book-accurate than most interpretations. Most have Watson & Lestrade looking like dullards to boost Holmes's own genius, but in the books, they were smart and far more hands-on and combat-oriented than most movies portray them as. Interesting enough, now that Law is done with Fantastic Beasts and RDJ is finished being Ironman (for now), you can expect the third Sherlock Holmes movie to surface soon. Both RDJ and Jude Law loved being in the roles, and somewhat eager to get started.
After watching this film a few times, I realized that the restaurant scene between Holmes, Watson and Mary showed that Holmes was unable to turned off his observation skill. I feel his inability to turn his skill off was the reason why he was socially awkward.
I like how they at least respected the source material with Holmes being an arrogant condescending chaotic genius and Watson as a solid dependable kind friend who takes care of him protecting him more often than not from his own recklessness.
So they didn't respect the source material. Holmes holds his reason and his sense of morality above all else, self-admittingly, and Watson is incredibly lazy, self-admittingly. Nothing Holmes does should be impossible for Watson, especially in the latter books when Holmes reminds him he already taught him his methods, but it's his constant disinterest, distraction, and biases that keep him from solving cases. Holmes only really gets careless once in Norbury, and he _does_ ask Watson to tell him if ever in the future he seems that careless again to remind him of how incredibly wrong he got that case, but besides that Holmes does the heavy lifting. This was more "how do we portray brilliance in 2 hours, and give him RDJ's personality?"
@@billbill6094 just because a character says something doesn't mean it's true Holmes repeatedly takes risks with his drug use his experiments his life and the life of those around him his arrogance in believing he is smart enough to account for every possible variable in every scenario can't be ignored because he is proven right. Recklessness is not decided on whether you got away with taking the risk it's decided on how necessary the risk was in the first place. Your other points are valid but respecting the source material doesn't mean being rigidly bound by every detail I don't mind a little artistic license as long as they don't utterly disregard the foundation of the character. Both these Sherlock Holmes movies were so much fun and the type of movies you want to watch every few years and enjoy them like they are new. Thanks for the reaction guys.
Back when this first came out they hadn't cast for Moriarty yet so the person who originally did his voice was someone different. After the second film came out they brought Jared Harris in to do a re-recording of the lines and switched them out for all future releases of the first film.
5:08 - Yes. Holmes has several less-than constructive habits when he gets bored. One of them is he uses his pistol to shoot the initials V. R. (Victoria Regina) into the wall of his apartment. He aims for the holes he's already shot. 6:18 - The truth: They've already met. Mary was Holmes' client in his and Watson's second major case, The Sign of the Four. 14:08 - Irene Adler. _THE_ Woman. A Scandal in Bohemia. 38:42 - It was an ongoing personal project of Holmes' to try to expand Watson's mind by teaching Watson his techniques. It's an interesting meta-cycle since Watson was the narrator of the stories and thus a stand-in for Arthur Conan-Doyle, who was the writer, and thus the one ACTUALLY coming up with these logical trains.
I remember seeing this movie and the sequel on their first release. As a fan of Sherlock Holmes I wasn't sure I was going to like him and Watson being portrayed by Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, but I loved them. The soundtrack to Sherlock Holmes is one of my favorites.
Idk if you're watching these _only_ because it's a Sherlock Holmes story, but I would reccomend after you watch the second you watch other Guy Ritchie movies too. The modern ones like The Gentlemen and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. are amazing, and obviously his classics like Snatch and RockNRolla are classic for a good reason. They underpowered Holmes in this movie really, while giving him a very Robert Downey Jr. personality. In the books, he is an extremely renowned boxer, and is known for almost inhuman strength. Also when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had to reverse his death infamously due to public pressure, he made him also a master of Baritsu, a mispelling of Bartitsu, a Victorian martial art of grappling and stick fighting.
At 9:49. That's to be thing about Robert Downey Jr's performance as Sherlock. He's actually the first actor to get it truly "Right". The reason, he was sitting in the dark, the reason he was slapping the dude in a fighting pit with music so loud that you can barely think and the reason he was listening to the pocket watch, are all one and the same. He sees too much at all times. Input overload. So he does things to dull his senses when he's not actively working.
Omg, I may have yelped seeing this in my notifications guys. I ADORE these movies. Having my favourite actor of all time, Mark Strong, as the bad guy was a big bonus lol.
10:15 😳 Watson's line to Holmes, "You know that what you're drinking is for eye surgery?", is an obscure reference to Holmes' cocaine usage. At the time, cocaine was used as a topical anesthetic for eye surgery. In the stories, Holmes injects cocaine.
Irene Adler is Sherlock's weakspot. I love all things Sherlock Holmes..the books, TV shows & movies. And these do NOT disappoint. Looking forward to your reaction to the sequel.
Something that only occurred to me after I saw both of these movies and got more into the character of Sherlock Holmes (by reading the books and watching other things with the character) was something that was never explicitly said in this movie. I think Holmes was trying to make sure John didn't change his mind about Mary and continue his "addition" to adventure with Holmes. First there was his original meeting with Mary. After they left when Holmes insulted her, his food arrives just then, meaning he knew ahead of time that he would be eating alone and, from the focus on the watch, he even timed it. This means he fully intended to make them leave in some way right off the bat. Then, there's the fact that each of his methods to try to "convince John that he isn't suited for the quiet life with Mary" backfire to the point where John becomes more convinced to marry Mary. Sherlock might not exactly be a "people person", but even he would know that his plans were having the opposite effect, unless that was what he was looking for. Sherlock, in his own way, cares about John and wants him happy, but can't just come out and say it, so he would go about ensuring it in a roundabout way.
I can't wait to see you guys react to the sequel where we deal with Holmes' most terrifying and brilliant enemy. Professor James Moriarty, the Napoleon Of Crime.
I hope we get a third one of these. Last I heard RDJ was still interested. Oppenheimer really reinvigorated him with acting. Hope it'll lead to sherlock Holmes 3.
You fellas are in for a treat if you continue. The sequel is arguably even better than the first RDJ and Jude Law have remarkable chemistry as Watson and Holmes. I'd watch a feature length film of them shopping for groceries 😂
The music score from this movie was awesome. This is one of my favorite portrayals Sherlock Holmes. My other favorites being Ronald Howard and H. Marion Crawford. And of course Basil Rathborn and Nigel Bruce, Jeremy Brett and Sir John Gielgood?
Sherlock Holmes was the original master sleuth who defeated his opponents by solving them with his extreme (though taxing) intelligence. Sherlock Holmes was one of the two primary inspirations for Batman (the other being Zorro). Irene Adler was the original Fem Fatale, who also inspired Catwoman.
8:59 I actually saw a video on TH-cam where an actual doctor analyzed this scene. 🧐 Some of Holmes’s terminology is a little off (bones are never referred to as “cracked”), but his predicted recovery time was very close to the mark! 🤯
I saw this and the sequel in the movie theatre when they came out. I love these movies so much. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law are the perfect duo. Loved your reaction.
I've been a Sherlock Holmes fan since elementary school and grew up watching the Basil Rathbone shorts from the late 30's and early 40's. Over the years I've seen most of the great renditions, and Robert Downey did a solid job, no complaints. Both of his films are solid and I would recommend them to anyone who might be interested in the character of Sherlock Holmes. If you guys find these entertaining, Benedict Cumberbatch "Sherlock" from the BBC is a solid watch, although it started way better than it ended. And "Elementary" from CBS ran for 7 seasons and starred Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock and Lucy Liu as Watson. It breaks many of the long standing tropes of the character, but in a good way, it's a TV series, so a huge investment of time is required for that one. Oh and I almost forgot one of the best films, "Young Sherlock Holmes", a very under appreciated gem.
I've prefer CBS's Elementary over BBC's Sherlock though. I feel Elementary really flesh out Sherlock's journey, but sometimes the show fluctuates in it's quality.
@@hound3000 If I was going to rate any one version of S.H., Elementary would probably take my top spot, as you said, it fleshes out the character. Same went for Watson, as over the course of the show, she became a more well rounded with depth as well. And yeah, the show wasted many good opportunities in regards to many of the characters and story lines, which is a shame. While Elementary had it's good and bad, it was a long running series with hundreds of episodes over many years and that is often to be expected. The BBC show had a lot less to contend with over time, and when that show was good it was amazing, and when it was bad, it was a WTF!? moment for me. LOL
Actually, that fighting stile is less "movie" than what you can think. Some of those slaps are just fiction for the movie, but other movements and some of other slaps (for example those on the opponent's arms) are a part of Wing-Chu, a martial art that is part of Kung Fu, and Robert Downey Jr practiced it for a lot of years.
seeing sherlock holmes in a fist fight, i realize, that what he is doing is analyze the situation he was in, and what to do, and predict his moves, then execute his moves. felt that is one way to handle the fight
I loved the sequel to this just as much and still hold out hope they will do the third they have been talking about for ages! Definitely deserves to be a trilogy!
I could be mistaken, but the stuff he was drinking that was meant for eye surgery may very well have been liquid cocaine, which would be very accurate of early Sherlock Holmes stories.
This one and the second one, A game of Shadows are excellent. The second one has more intrigue going on, but you get to see Sherlock Holmes arch enemy - Professor Moriarty. Who they gave a small nod to in this one. He has a much bigger role in the next one, and is definitely a great villain.
"The best version"??? Robert Downey Jr. does not in the slightest look like Sherlock Holmes as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle described him in his books. If Downey and Mark Strong had switched roles, this movie could have worked for me.
After you've watched A Game of Shadows, I think The Spielberg produced Young Sherlock Holmes would be a good companion piece to these movies until the new one comes out.
10:50 I love the fact that he’s right, this whole show could have been avoided if they’d just let Watson turn Blackwood’s head into a canoe at the start of the movie 😂
The part where Watson barges in his room and starts opening the shades - he says "This is for EYE SURGERY!" He is referring to cocaine, which was originally a topical anesthetic in liquid form - most commonly injected by fiends (usually medical professionals). THE KNICK was an amazing historical series - cut short - about a hospital in NY City in 1900. Clive Owen plays a surgeon who gets hooked on it. GREAT Show! Only 2 seasons 😫
Homes ordered his food at the restaurant before Watson and Mary arrived because he knew there was a good chance he would end up insulting Mary and forcing her to leave.
I love that when you start watching it, you don't know what kind of movie it is exactly, like is there something like real magic, or not... and then Sherlock starts explaining everything
the boxing scene where Holmes slap fights his opponant is an actual form of martial arts that uses placed slaps mostly. RDJ has studied this form of fighting for years.
I disagree about Holmes’ intentions while reading Mary. Holmes was trying to give Watson a reason to call off the engagement so he could have his bestie back. He was jelly.
To think this feature came out the same year as Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince (2nd least favorite movie/The Best Novel) is pretty fascinating.

He was building a suppressor. There is no such thing as a silencer. Someone once misunderstood like a game of telephone and called it a silencer in a movie and now we have people like you that just don't know any better.
i think the reason this saga never had a third movie is because the second entry was so goddam good, it elevate the bar so high that it was impossible to match... Once you watch the sequel, you'll get my point...
You should watch survivors with Robin William's. It one of his older films but so worth it. So many good lines and laughs. You will not be disapointed.
just the other day, I had been working on coding a graphic system and spent most of the day hitting a roadblock. when I finally had a breakthrough, I felt like Holmes kicking the crap out of that Irishman at the bar: just slowly walk out of there, leave the code on the table, grab the nearest booze, and chug it as I walk off screen. RDJ was perfect for this.
I loved these two movies. The way RDJ and Jude Law interact is phenomenal and the chemistry he has with Rachel McAdams is perfect. You'll love the second one as well. Btw, the newer series with Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Dr Watson is also really good albeit played differently than these movies.

This one and the second one, A game of Shadows are excellent. The second one has more intrigue going on, but you get to see Sherlock Holmes arch enemy - Professor Moriarty. Who they gave a small nod to in this one. He has a much bigger role in the next one, and is definitely a great villain.
YES! The best version of Sherlock Holmes, being watched by the best reactors on TH-cam!
"The best version"??? Robert Downey Jr. does not in the slightest look like Sherlock Holmes as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle described him in his books.
If Downey and Mark Strong had switched roles, this movie could have worked for me.
Both films are AWESOME, still wanting a part 3
After you've watched A Game of Shadows, I think The Spielberg produced Young Sherlock Holmes would be a good companion piece to these movies until the new one comes out.
🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 I’m waving my little flag here for the British 🙋🏼♀️
Second movie is even better! RDJ did fantastic job.
I really wish they had made more than 2 of these movies
Can't wait to see their reaction to the second movie.
RDJ and Jude Law are literally perfect for these roles, pretty sure they are making another one.
10:50 I love the fact that he’s right, this whole show could have been avoided if they’d just let Watson turn Blackwood’s head into a canoe at the start of the movie 😂
I wish they had done more of these movies, they are a great Holmes and Watson.
This one is good, but "A game of shadows," 2011 Sherlock Holmes is better imo..👍
This is one of the best interpretations of Sherlock Holmes!
😎
…second only to Basil of Baker Street from Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective!
The giant is from New Brunswick. A french Acadien, Robert Maillet.
Such a great film. Waiting for the 3rd one 😍
the boxing scene where Holmes slap fights his opponant is an actual form of martial arts that uses placed slaps mostly. RDJ has studied this form of fighting for years.
To explain why he's slapping if someone hasn't already done it before, you're less likely to break something with a slap than you are with a punch.
I disagree about Holmes’ intentions while reading Mary. Holmes was trying to give Watson a reason to call off the engagement so he could have his bestie back. He was jelly.
I love the humor in these Sherlock Holmes movies. I love Robert Downey's wit.
If only his face matched the role!
To think this feature came out the same year as Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince (2nd least favorite movie/The Best Novel) is pretty fascinating.
7:57 "Technically he left you..." You're not wrong, dude!! 🤣
If you like this one, you're gonna LOVE the sequel: Game of Shadows. :D
Ohhhh I'm excited for this.....I've watched this one and the second SO MANY TIMES! Robert Downey Jr is hilarious!
This and its sequel were adapted from the series of short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
I know a lot of people like BBC's Sherlock, but I always have a partial fondness for this version's more unkempt, ruffian-flavored Holmes.
This one is fun. Enjoy. You have so much enthusiasm, you make good movies 🎥 insane.
I'm born and was raised in england , still living in the uk, i love robert downey jr we share the same birth day
Love to see Sherlock as DLC for Tekken 8.
My favorite parts lol
5:28
5:34
6:36
7:53 “technically he left you”
8:59
13:34 “wait a minute” lmao
15:42 “no girl wants to marry a doctor who can’t tell if a man is dead or not”
18:13 that sound lmao xD
19:00
20:14
20:40 blames Watson lol
25:44
34:20
this movie and the sequel rocks, Mr. Iron Man himself killed this performance.
Love you guys always brighten my day. Best casting Robert kills it. Can’t wait for 2nd movie love from Uk 🇬🇧 🥰
He was building a suppressor. There is no such thing as a silencer. Someone once misunderstood like a game of telephone and called it a silencer in a movie and now we have people like you that just don't know any better.
@2:47 OI!! As a British person I resemble that remark!
i think the reason this saga never had a third movie is because the second entry was so goddam good, it elevate the bar so high that it was impossible to match... Once you watch the sequel, you'll get my point...
I had forgotten how entertaining this film was :) Thanks for the reminder, and the laugh!
You should watch survivors with Robin William's. It one of his older films but so worth it. So many good lines and laughs. You will not be disapointed.
You might like the TV series Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch. 4 seasons with 3 episodes in each season.
just the other day, I had been working on coding a graphic system and spent most of the day hitting a roadblock.
when I finally had a breakthrough, I felt like Holmes kicking the crap out of that Irishman at the bar: just slowly walk out of there, leave the code on the table, grab the nearest booze, and chug it as I walk off screen.
RDJ was perfect for this.
Permission to enter the Armory? ...Granted. Absolutely classic Dry British Humour
21:58 Governments do it for foreign policy interests all the time. Sacrifice innocents for power.
"He talks to himself, that's kinda scary."
Oh my man, you would be terrified in the city I live. Downtown it's more common than not. 😂
I really hate how in modern movies they REALLY don't like their protagonists to be imperfect, they always win.
I’d love to see y’all check out Sherlock the tv show, it’s a banger, I know y’all don’t do tv but nothing wrong with asking lol
Me too I love to experience them watch it❤😊
I would love to see A Game of Shadows next! This movie is a good beginning, but the second one has everything this one did and even more!!!
These movies were a lot better than i would've expected.
“Technically he left you” bro that was brutal 😂
Never see anyone reacting to this so I appreciate it one of my favourite films 👌
Holmes and Watson (2018) has got to be next there is no better time, genuinely a great parody
