Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Oliver Reed and Connie Nielsen. Completely stacked cast with a soundtrack for the ages. I still cry my eyes out 20 plus years later. Great reaction and commentary y’all.
Great cast, indeed, and Oliver Reed's last film. Every time I see him on screen I'm reminded that he died during a filming break. He promised Ridley Scott months before filming that he wasn't going to drink ( he was off and on the wagon for years) while shooting the film but he lied. His work around was drinking on weekends and while on break from filming Gladiator, he challenged some English sailors to a drinking contest in a pub where he shouldn't've been. He collapsed, an ambulance was called and he died en route to the hospital. What a film to have a great performance for what would be his last one.
One of the most Perfect movies in existence. Soundtrack, Story, Dialogue and Actors all combine to become something much greater. If i find it Channel surfing i will watch whatever is left no matter how busy i am.
Imagine committing an act so powerful that the entire Roman coliseum goes quiet enough to hear a pin drop. Also, Quintus didn't betray the emperor. He never wanted to do any of this to Maximus at any point. But Quintus knew that if he didn't carry out the orders, someone else would have and his family would have been included in them. In the end, Quintus was allowed to show his support for Maximus simply by honoring the coliseum and the conditions of the challenge. Gladiators die with honor, false emperors do not.
I adore this movie. The story, the acting, the scale and scope, the score, the cinematography, the directing, everything comes together to make a perfect representation of Hollywood at its best. Thanks for the reaction.
The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.
This movie was my first ever rated R movie. My dad insisted that this would be my first. It changed how I saw cinema. Never had I seen a movie with amazing acting performance, music score and cinematography in my life and I’ve loved it ever since.
1:07:54 you misunderstand Quintus here, he’s not “a slimy little guy” he’s just smart, him and maximus alone did not have the power or influence to overthrow the ceaser in the start of the movie so he did the smart thing and acted loyal, in the final duel however he and maximus DO have that power and influence so he commands his gaurds to follow the rules of the 1v1 duel to the death. He’s an honourable man in my books
Marcus Aurelius kept his plan to install Maximus secret. That's why Commodus killed him, so it would never get out. To Quintus, Maximus just looked like he was turning treasonous at the start of the movie. Killing a man's family because he committed treason is pretty harsh but I agree that everything Quintus does could be seen as honorable.
Also, in the deleted scenes Commodus had two of Quintus's men executed. He believed they knew of Maximus's escape and said nothing. He made Quintus give the command to kill them. Quintus was not happy. th-cam.com/video/T_6oSjrpxBM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-8CWm5XwU49fPrLK
And the road to Hell is paved with good intention. He's smart in terms of self preservation, but he had no qualms sending a death squad to Maximus' home for his wife and child. Some things remain unforgiveable, regardless of the reason. Sure there's complexities to the character, but a silver spoon covered in shit is still no fine dining, so to speak. At least that's how I see it.
I don't know if any other movie I have ever seen has had such a powerful soundtrack. The main track " Now We Are Free" feels like it is plucked straight out of this era and it is soooooo damn powerful.
Such a fantastic movie and brilliant score from Hans Zimmer... he declined to do the sequel so it wouldn't be compared to the original but one of his proteges is doing it, Harry Gregson-Williams, who has some very good credits already, so i'm sure it will be great. Cast in this movie was so good, wonderful performances all over, from the main cast to all of the other characters.
Saw this back in 2000 in Theaters, the battle scene was epic. Seeing the Catapults fire one by one, and the arrows was EPIC, After the movie I went home an started playing Age of Empires hehe.
Quintus was a man of honor. He did not know Commodus had killed his father. He was a soldier following the orders of his new emperor. He ordered his men not to assist in the arena because that was dishonorable.
@@i_love_rescue_animalsYeah, this is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I did not need a sequel. But between Denzel and Pedro, I'm optimistic.
Derek Jacobi (Gracchus) played in a mini series AGES AGO, about the Roman Emperors, iClaudius, he played Claudius. John Hurt was Caligula, Patrick Stewart played in it, and HE HAD HAIR.
FUN FACTS: The forest battleground at the beginning of the film was slated for being cut down; the film producers bought it for the film and made sure it was burned for the battle and completed the job afterward. Also, the chanting heard from the tribes before the battle were actually African Zulu war chants, taken from the 1964 film, "Zulu".
My man is an idiot for not taking him up on his offer to join him. For the sole reason it's easier to stab someone in the back if you let them take their rightful place infront of you! Any roman general worth their salt would know that! And that their families lives would be at stake if then deny the emporer.

My favorite movie of all time since it came out in 2000. Joaquin Phoenix is one of the greatest method actors of our time. Fantastic reaction. New sub here.
Oliver Reed is a film icon here in the UK his unpredictable insane drunken rants on British chat shows is legendary, this film is considered a classic already.
For he he will always be Athos. Since I saw him in The Three Musketeers when I was a kid his presence and acting (and, let's be honest, his dark brooding good looks) cemented him as one of my "types".
Great call on the comparison with today's politics. We have one candidate with NOTHING to stand on other than distractions for the last 4 years and one candidate that can actually stand on his accomplishments. I'll let yall decide on which one is which.
Back in the days everything wasn't all Superheroes, you had beautiful epic masterpieces like this to enjoy! -don't think I can add anything more than you've said to how great this film was, I just wait with bated breath to see how the 'long awaited' sequel is received ... personally I don't think this needed one!
Quintus is a "Yes, man". An highly disciplined soldier that follows orders, plain and simple.......... unless he sees something not honourable, literally. He saw with his own eyes, Commodus injuring Maximus, from that point on, he made sure that the fight would be fair.
There are times I like reactions and most times I don't, but this was a great reaction to an amazing movie. Nothing more could be said in their post analysis; it was amazing. Well done team!
I think Quintus can be easly judged harshly, but he's in reality just a loyal soldier, he wasn't in the influential circle, he didn't know the Epmeror was slain, he just followed orders, until he got to see the truth. After all I say he's a positive character in this movie.
This is the kinda movie that is on the wall at theatres when you walk in. Legendary. Making part 2 .......this sequel BETTER be epic otherwise it tarnishes the originals name.
Gladiator is based loosely on two historical events in Rome that stand out more than others. There could be more I missed but these are 2 obvious. 1. Spartacus uprising with a slave rebellion against Rome, aka Maximus stand up to emperor. 2. Commodious based on the real emperor who was also killed. He did fight in most likely rigged gladiator and other games. He was trained by a slave wrestler to help him with this who also competed. Commodious was poison but believed to have survived so they sent this wrestler to finish him off that same night. So in a way he was killed by some one he knew and part of the games he participated in. Ancient history is often more interesting and crazier than the movies we make up.
Marcus Aurelius is revered today as an example of Plato’s ideal of the “philosopher king.” Partly this is because the Emperor’s written words have come down to us in a slim volume usually called ‘Meditations,’ which is supposed to be a fine example of Stoic thought. I never really understood his reputation. He blew the most important decision of his life. Unlike in this movie he always wanted Commodus to be his successor though he knew Commodus was weak, sadistic, and corrupt.
48:44 The whole throwing bread into the crowd is a reference to the old adage of "bread and circuses". The idea that the power of distraction and spectacle is often more effective as a means of control than brute force. In the extended version of the film, Commodus mentions that he has been quietly selling off Rome's grain reserves in order to float the cost of 150 days of games. So the people may end up starving in the long run, but as long as you keep them entertained they won't care.
Aside from the perfection that this movie is… it’s become a personal challenge of mine to see who (if any) reactors will catch the ICONIC GOOF @ 31:07, alas, another channel where they do not 😂😂😂 the reaction was still 😘👌
Oliver Reed was a famous British actor and all-round hellraiser due to his lifelong battle with alcoholism. One of his most infamous moments was when he appeared on a current affairs program here in the UK called After Dark (the episode highlights are on TH-cam), where he was completely hammered for the whole discussion and ended up having to be removed on air because of how bad he was to the other guests.
This is one of my all time favorite movies! You two did an EXCELLENT reaction. thank you! I absolutely loved the score by Hans Zimmer too! Amazing. I don't know if this was mentioned anywhere, but Connie Nielson did not know that Joaquin was going to YELL, "AM I NOT MERCIFUL?!!!" right in her face. Maximus' wife in the movie was played by Ridley Scott's *future wife. They married 15 years later.
The Gothic and Alemannic wars took place on the Danube and not in Germania. Like all wars against Germanic tribes, the Romans were unable to defeat the Germanic tribes and built fortresses on the Danube as they had on the Rhine 150 years earlier. Emperor Commodus was strangled to death during an assassination attempt in his bath in a gladiator school. Smartass mode off. Still a brilliant movie that finally made Russel Crow (Romper Stomper) a star.
I do not know, but I think Quintus was always doing the correct thing when he made his decisions regarding how he treated Maximus. When Commodus became emperor, he had to follow orders and kill Maximus, even though they fought together . But when Commodus committed to fighting Maximus in the Colosseum, he had to play by the rules of a fight to the death. Basically, Quintus prevented Commodus from losing his honor.
This was the very last epic film before CGI took over. Russell Crowe even told his fellow actors "Look around this is the last time they'll build such sets." There was to be a long fight between Praxomus and the Emperor's guards. Unfortunately the actor passed away before it could be filmed.
What does John Williams have to do with this? This is Hans Zimmer - someone that doesn't get credit for films that he SHOULD get credit for considering how many of his pathetic clones are still working.
8:43 Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. He is known as "The Philosopher". He wrote many books but for contemporary times he wrote 'Meditations' which is an important work in the philosophy of Stoicism.
Fun fact regarding that moment between Emperor Marcus Aurelius & General Maximus when the Emperor says, "Let us whisper now, together, you and I." The Latin word, "consipare" means "breathe together", and from where comes the word "conspiracy."
Thank you for realizing the Tigers most likely would've gone after the guys pulling the tight chain around their necks first. But it's still a fantastic scene.
Strength & Honor. Crowe's finest hour & Scott delivering another cinematic masterpiece in storytelling. All across the board with acting, visuals, production design & Hans Zimmer's magnificent score (yep - not John Williams). I strongly recommend you watch BEN-HUR with Charlton Heston & SPARTACUS starring Kirk Douglas and directed by Stanley Kubrick just alone for seeing their influence on this film. Nice job Pals :D
One the of the all time great movies of all time imo/e everything about it is brilliant! Human history is and was ruthless and this movie does a good job of its portrayal, but times back then were even more life and death! Awesome reaction guys. Fact: Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 121 AD - 180 AD) was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 Commodus's is real and did succeed after MarcusA, but has been subject to debate among both contemporary and modern historians. I'm struggling to see that the sequel can do this justice, this should have been a standalone movie for all times and G2 should have been done as its own movie! I haven't seen it or unsure if I will, maybe I'll just wait to you react to it, because watching you guys and all of the rest of team reactions, sometimes makes a movie that I know I wont enjoy, enjoyable, which I am thankful of, cheers. The only guiding light is Ridley Scott is still Director and one of the Producers and Connie Nielsen from G1 and Denzel Washington! Cheers guys go you good things ❣🤘 Famous Quotes: from Marcus Aurelius! - "Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one." (I think Steph will appreciate this one) For all, have a great day! - "When you arise in the morning! think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive ! to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love."! ..
Also the main combat theme from Gladiator is more or less directly lifted from a very famous classical music piece, "Mars" from Gustav Holst's _The Planets._
There are only a few movies I consider to have (in my case, non-religious) righteous violence. This is one of them. Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds are two others. Great reaction. I needed a distraction tonight.
Living on the island of Malta where some of this plus the second film was shot I was lucky enough a couple of weeks ago to be able to see this for the second time in the cinema digitally remastered for the 25th anniversary. There where maybe another dozen people in the cinema and it still felt as good as it did the first time. No how many times I watch the whole film or youtuber reactions to it I am always entertained. My favorite film ever which says a lot since almost all the others in my top ten if not top 20 have dragons or some other kind of magical creature in them.
Oliver Reed who plays the old gladiator in charge of all the other gladiators he died during the filming of the movie and they had to use creative ways or extra footage they had of him to fill him in.
41:29 It was at this moment, I looked up to the heavens and entered Elysium, walking through the wheat fields, brushing my palms over them. Score was done by Hans Zimmer, not John Williams.

What you react to online, echoes in eternity! 😛
Ending gets me every time, tears a flowing
I find it interesting that the big gladiator knew who Maximus was from the start
though he kept his mouth shut till they were in the coliseum
I do not know, but I think Quintus was always doing the correct thing when he made his decisions regarding how he treated Maximus. When Commodus became emperor, he had to follow orders and kill Maximus, even though they fought together . But when Commodus committed to fighting Maximus in the Colosseum, he had to play by the rules of a fight to the death. Basically, Quintus prevented Commodus from losing his honor.
this single role made Joaquin it is his greatest role yes he has great performances in other movies but this is his masterpiece
This was the very last epic film before CGI took over. Russell Crowe even told his fellow actors "Look around this is the last time they'll build such sets."
There was to be a long fight between Praxomus and the Emperor's guards. Unfortunately the actor passed away before it could be filmed.
Watched in in the cinema. It's the type of movie, when you can't find anything to watch you go with this one I'd the favorite movies😊
Score is done by Hans Zimmer
Great reaction! Thank you for knowing the history.
John Williams is so legendary, he actually gets credit for scoring movies he’s never been a part of…lol
Watch "Spartacus" the HBO series 👍👍👍
I just discovered this channel and I’m obsessed
This movie is a masterpiece. This is why I have my reservations about the sequel.
Top 5 movie of all time. Should be no debate.
NOWAY THEY HAVEN'T WATCHED THIS BEFORE
Thank you for realizing the Tigers most likely would've gone after the guys pulling the tight chain around their necks first.
Another good war movie from Ridley Scott: Kingdom of heaven
Great movie. Shows that good leaders can lead anywhere and lead anyone.
One the of the all time great movies of all time imo/e everything about it is brilliant!
Human history is and was ruthless and this movie does a good job of its portrayal, but times back then were even more life and death!
Awesome reaction guys.
Fact:
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 121 AD - 180 AD) was Roman emperor from 161 to 180
Commodus's is real and did succeed after MarcusA, but has been subject to debate among both contemporary and modern historians.
Cheers guys go you good things ❣🤘
Famous Quotes: from Marcus Aurelius!
- "Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one." (I think Steph will appreciate this one)
For all, have a great day!
- "When you arise in the morning! think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive ! to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love."!
..
Steph's facial expression and "Eww" at every incest scene had me LMAO! 🤣
One of the greatest movies ever
Also the main combat theme from Gladiator is more or less directly lifted from a very famous classical music piece, "Mars" from Gustav Holst's _The Planets._
There are only a few movies I consider to have (in my case, non-religious) righteous violence. This is one of them. Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds are two others.
Great reaction. I needed a distraction tonight.
I hope Steph's brother sees her cringe at all the scenes between commodus and Lucilla and recreates them to her every time they hang out!!
Amazing the correlations to today. Nailed it. Sad how we don’t learn from history.
Roller ball for the next movie. Jonathan, Jonathan, Jonathon!!
What up, Braw! And Michael! 😝❤️
