Great cast, indeed, and Oliver Reed's last film. Every time I see him on screen I'm reminded that he died during a filming break. Imagine committing an act so powerful that the entire Roman coliseum goes quiet enough to hear a pin drop. Also, Quintus didn't betray the emperor. He never wanted to do any of this to Maximus at any point. But Quintus knew that if he didn't carry out the orders, someone else would have and his family would have been included in them. In the end, Quintus was allowed to show his support for Maximus simply by honoring the coliseum and the conditions of the challenge. Gladiators die with honor, false emperors do not.

The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.

Many things to love about this film but one of my favourites is how Maximus and Commodus are true polar opposites. They share no real similarities which seems increasingly rare with current protagonist and antagonist films.
I don't know if any other movie I have ever seen has had such a powerful soundtrack. The main track " Now We Are Free" feels like it is plucked straight out of this era and it is soooooo damn powerful.
They had professional boxers and wrestlers in ancient Rome too. In fact, a wrestler named Narcissus was the real Emperor Commodus's bodyguard and he drowned Commodus in his own bath. Boxers in ancient Rome wore iron gloves and fought to the death.
At 40:03 you hear one of the gladiators state: "i served with you at Vindobona". It was to show Maximus' soldiers loyalty. He knew who Maximus was, and knew he was in hiding and didn't out him. Historically the empire had multiple standing armies, each of them more loyal to their generals than the empire itself. This ended up leading to many civil wars with each army fighting to kill off the others

This was the very last epic film before CGI took over. Russell Crowe even told his fellow actors "Look around this is the last time they'll build such sets." There was to be a long fight between Praxomus and the Emperor's guards. Unfortunately the actor passed away before it could be filmed.
Such a fantastic movie and brilliant score from Hans Zimmer... he declined to do the sequel so it wouldn't be compared to the original but one of his proteges is doing it, Harry Gregson-Williams, who has some very good credits already, so i'm sure it will be great. Cast in this movie was so good, wonderful performances all over, from the main cast to all of the other characters.

I’m so glad you guys did and it was fun watching you guys enjoy it.
Powerful movie, yes. With great acting and probably one of the best soundtracks ever written. But I wouldn't put in an "all time top 5". Just off the top of my head I can probably name at least 10 movies that could be objectively considered better, and certainly more influencial than this one (Citizen Kane, Psycho, 2001 A Space Odissey, The Seventh Seal, Metropolis, Vertigo, 8 1/2, Seven Samurai, The Godfather) and this without even mentioning my personal favourites (Blade Runner, the LotR trilogy, Spirited Away, The Wind Rises, etc.). So yea, definitely a very good movie that I'd watch many times over, but with some shortcomings that prevents it from being among the very best of all time.
There are only a few movies I consider to have (in my case, non-religious) righteous violence. This is one of them. Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds are two others. Great reaction. I needed a distraction tonight.

I was 12 when this movie was released. To this day the best movie ever made. Nice to see someone watching it for the first time, like I did 24 years ago.
I think Quintus can be easly judged harshly, but he's in reality just a loyal soldier, he wasn't in the influential circle, he didn't know the Epmeror was slain, he just followed orders, until he got to see the truth. After all I say he's a positive character in this movie.
This is one of my all time favorite movies! You two did an EXCELLENT reaction. thank you! I absolutely loved the score by Hans Zimmer too! Amazing. Gladiator is one of the best movies ever made, the acting, set design, fights and my gosh the music are all fantastic.!
Derek Jacobi (Gracchus) played in a mini series AGES AGO, about the Roman Emperors, iClaudius, he played Claudius. John Hurt was Caligula, Patrick Stewart played in it, and HE HAD HAIR.
I remember watching that as a kid with my Older Sister on MASTERPIECE THEATRE. 💖😀
Quintus is a "Yes, man". An highly disciplined soldier that follows orders, plain and simple.......... unless he sees something not honourable, literally. He saw with his own eyes, Commodus injuring Maximus, from that point on, he made sure that the fight would be fair.
Phoenix should have won an Oscar. It's out of this world CRAAAAAAZY that he didn't. Oliver Reed was a beast too. R.I.P. 🙏🏿
Nah, it's overrated and he acted like he's bit on pressure. Benecio del Toro way better
@@decidueye2963 No it's not overrated. It's a magnificent performance. Crowe should've won for The Insider, not Gladiator. Also, Del Toro should've won an Oscar for 21 Grams.
@@warrenbfeagins Nah, Phoenix performance wasn't that good and he acts like he's anxious also his acting isn't there much mostly thumbs up and thumbs down. It's not really special either. Del Toro was better. Phoenix improved from Walk the line.
People say so much about the character at the point of ignoring other characters performance like it's godly. It's not really and many can do Commodus more than Maximus role. It's overrated at this point
I’m my top 5 favorite movies of all time. Just simply amazing in every aspect of the game. From top to bottom a perfect movie.
This movie is the definition of "CINEMA".
8:43 Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. He is known as "The Philosopher".
He wrote many books but for contemporary times he wrote 'Meditations' which is an important work in the philosophy of Stoicism.
I have seen this movie so many times. And I am never upset to watch it again. Just one of those rare films. I could probably watch it twice back-to-back and still be entertained.
I can’t believe they made a sequel of this
Yeah, but I'm hopeful. The trailers look great!
I would love to see the prequel, The Rise of General Maximus.
@@i_love_rescue_animalsYeah, this is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I did not need a sequel. But between Denzel and Pedro, I'm optimistic.
I can't believe they used a rap song for that sequel's trailer, Ridley Scott's ego has no limit.
@@afroahmed3989 Man! I didn't notice that in the trailer I saw! I'll have to watch more than one and see. I surely would have noticed, because I'm an old lady and generally, not a fan.
Great watching this movie again with you guys. You guys are fun. And I love the intelligence with which you watch and comment on the movie afterward. By the way, Spaniards wife is actually Ridley Scott's wife ;-)
41:23 Nope it's Hans Zimmer, same guy who did the Nolan Batman score ( as well as most of his movies score), Pirate of the Carabean and Dune among his many many scores...Hell you can hear the similarities with Pirates !!
Back in the days everything wasn't all Superheroes, you had beautiful epic masterpieces like this to enjoy! -don't think I can add anything more than you've said to how great this film was, I just wait with bated breath to see how the 'long awaited' sequel is received ... personally I don't think this needed one!
Great movie. Shows that good leaders can lead anywhere and lead anyone.
This was the very last epic film before CGI took over. Russell Crowe even told his fellow actors "Look around this is the last time they'll build such sets."
There was to be a long fight between Praxomus and the Emperor's guards.
Cast in this movie was so good, wonderful performances all over, from the main cast to all of the other characters.
i watched in the theatre it was an unforgettable experience with the end scene moving me to tears. Its an absolute great classic.
This movie is gorgeously shot, epic in scope, well acted, etc... and I care not one whit for it other than the memes I do enjoy. This is absolutely in no way to poopoo people who wholeheartedly love this movie. They should be able to enjoy the movie unencumbered by my or anyone else’s criticisms/dislike. I’m so glad you guys did and it was fun watching you guys enjoy it.
Top 5 movie of all time. Should be no debate.
@@mid1880 which shortcomings? lol
There are only a few movies I consider to have (in my case, non-religious) righteous violence. This is one of them. Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds are two others.
Great reaction. I needed a distraction tonight.
There are times I like reactions and most times I don't, but this was a great reaction to an amazing movie. Nothing more could be said in their post analysis; it was amazing. Well done team!
This is the kinda movie that is on the wall at theatres when you walk in. Legendary. Making part 2 .......this sequel BETTER be epic otherwise it tarnishes the originals name.
Oliver Reed is a film icon here in the UK his unpredictable insane drunken rants on British chat shows is legendary, this film is considered a classic already.
For he he will always be Athos. Since I saw him in The Three Musketeers when I was a kid his presence and acting (and, let's be honest, his dark brooding good looks) cemented him as one of my "types".
Trust me, he’s an icon here in the states too. I’ve admired him for decades.
Nothing happens to any man that he is not formed by nature to bear. - Marcus Aurelius
Quintus is loyal to the throne however he had enough of Commodus at the end
I was 12 when this movie was released. To this day the best movie ever made. Nice to see someone watching it for the first time, like I did 24 years ago.
I think Quintus can be easly judged harshly, but he's in reality just a loyal soldier, he wasn't in the influential circle, he didn't know the Epmeror was slain, he just followed orders, until he got to see the truth. After all I say he's a positive character in this movie.
Oliver Reed died during the delay of the movie and they had to use CGI for some of his scenes. Granted this was when cgi was in its infancy. Wild.
Yes that's why he was killed off in a somewhat abrupt way. It was supposed to be Proximo at the end burying Maximus' figurines not Djimon's character.
@@chrispratt3666 in the end it might have turned out better this way
@@DefenestrateYourselfagree. It makes more sense Juba buries the figurines since he fought beside Maximus more than Proximo.
This is one of my all time favorite movies! You two did an EXCELLENT reaction. thank you! I absolutely loved the score by Hans Zimmer too! Amazing. I don't know if this was mentioned anywhere, but Connie Nielson did not know that Joaquin was going to YELL, "AM I NOT MERCIFUL?!!!" right in her face. Maximus' wife in the movie was played by Ridley Scott's *future wife. They married 15 years later.
One of my favorite movies. So many scenes along with the score still give me goosebumps. Epic, epic movie.
Michael is probably one of the sharpest people I've ever seen. He catches on so so quick, even with the Bollywood movies. I love his reactions! Not to say that Steph isn't awesome as well.
Wow I've never seen such a comprehensive yet entertaining reaction to this film (and ive seen a TON of them)! Such editing work im blown away ! Subbed
My favorite movie of all time since it came out in 2000. Joaquin Phoenix is one of the greatest method actors of our time. Fantastic reaction. New sub here.
Joaquin should’ve won the Oscar that year! I’m glad he got his gold statue for Joker though.
Nah, Benecio deserves it@@urzamishra
Surprising good reaction i also seen this movie a million times and still top 10 best movie ever made to bad that Ridley Scott has lost his way.
Thank you for realizing the Tigers most likely would've gone after the guys pulling the tight chain around their necks first. But it's still a fantastic scene.
This movie and Troy is just worth rewatching a million times.
A Masterpeace Of A Movie! 👊😊✊ Ridley Scott - Awesomeness 👌😆👍🍁
I love the universal "How is this entertainment?" followed by the cheers at the battle of Carthage.
My dad took me to see this when I was 12. He didn't know it was going to be a hard R lol. It sparked a life long love of Roman history. This movie is always in my top 3.
23:58: martial prowess and glory was so crucial to character back in the day from civilization to civilization.
If the sequel comes close to this quality then that’s a victory
It will be good but!!! it will not come close to the first one.
I doubt it, still might be ok tho
It’s going to be dog shit. The trailers hinting that Lucius is Maximus and Lucilla’s love child. Fuck right off with this not asked for sequel.
Having Denzel in it might be close
Spoiler alert, it doesn't.
Maximus' home is supposed to be in Trujillo, Spain.
The script, the acting, the production design, the story, the editing, the music, the directing. A masterpiece.
Who will help me carry him?
I watched this originally in the theaters. It was AMAZING! I was only 12 years old at the time when this was released and yeah, seeing this in theaters was such an experience! I'm very happy that you both enjoyed this so much while also being able to grasp some of the deeper meanings and thoughts presented in this movie. All in all, amazing reaction. I'm happily subbing to this channel, now. :)
Watched in in the cinema. It's the type of movie, when you can't find anything to watch you go with this one I'd the favorite movies😊
