This and the sequel are pretty faithful to the Sherlock Holmes character of the original stories by Doyle. So many adaptations portray him as a frail older man in a deerstalker hat but he really wasn't that originally. And Watson was an intelligent man rather than a bumbling sidekick.
I adore this movie, and I'm so glad you guys watched it :) A point I think a lot of people miss about the dinner scene where Sherlock meets Mary is that, while she did ask for him to show her what he could do, he had the ulterior motive of convincing Watson that marriage was a bad idea. In every other deduction he makes, there are logical steps between what he sees and what he figures out, but with Mary he sees something and ignores a lack of other context and clues to make her look bad.

Good call on the music here having a Pirates of the Caribbean feel, Hand Zimmer also composed music for Pirates as well.
The stories, mostly short stories, have long been in the public domain and available copyright for free, including the original Sydney Paget illustrations. Sometimes an adaptation that varies a lot from the original story can be better, such as the Father Brown series. But for my money, the Jeremy Brett Granada TV series is the gold standard. They used the illustrations to inspire the actual characters and how they looked. Brett was dying as the series wound up (and did so, shortly afterwards), but he was so dedicated to doing these stories, he managed to do all but one or two (I think).
In the same vein, for me, the gold standard for the Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot series are the ones with David Suchet, who went through the stories with a fine tooth comb to get all the detective's mannerisms spot on.

I hope after the second movie you'd consider reacting to the CBS series Elementary, which is a modern retelling of Sherlock Holmes. No one on youtube has reacted to it yet, but it's probably my favourite portrayal of Sherlock Holmes I've seen.

The concept: Putting a young adult Sherlock Holmes who’s just “coming into his own”, in the 21st Century…
There are a LOT of folks (myself included) who say Benedict Cumberbatch portrays the BEST Sherlock Holmes, ever! The series definitely launched him overnight into the role of a Leading Man, including Dr. Strange. (No offense to RDJ, I LOVE him in a lot of roles…. I’d say aside from Benedict’s portrayal, my favorite ACD Sherlock Holmes was Jeremy Brett’s TV series from the 1980s.)
