- Learn the 2 most important sleeve drafting characteristics so you can make it yourself.
Have you ever been scared of drafting sleeves because they are too confusing? ME TOO!!
In this video I tried to unlock the 2 most important sleeve characteristics (in my opinion). The cap height and the ease, here you'll be able to see a comparison in both drafting and sewing them.

I feel like I've learned more from watching your video vs my 3 patternmaking modules!
That's amaziiiing (sad for your modules tho)! Sometimes all we need to do is see the examples instead of all that theory...
Loved not only that you did line drawing and the real fit comparisons, but how you presented them. Very helpful!! Great video & garment work, thank you!
Thank you so much!!! I’m soo happy it was helpful ☺️
this was an amazing video! Please keep doing experiments like this. I'm really interested in fitting and videos showing the impact of different fit adjustments on your body would be so helpful. (like a muslin with a too small cup size, one with the right cup size, and one with a too big cup size)
Thank you so much!!! I'm working on Necklines for the next video but I'll definitely put it on my list for the next one☺️
This video is very helpful!
Thank youuuu❤ you are the BEST!
Fantastic video, very thorough and well explained. Not too simple, not too wordy. You have a beautiful smile, the kind a more poetic person would say "lights up the room". Thank you for taking time to make it.
Thank you so much for the kind words🥰
Thanks. This is great. You’re right, even more gathering might have been a good comparison too. The cap heights were very illustrative.
Thank you so muuuuch ☺️
omg. genius.
Learned so much. Thank you!
Very informative, thank you so much! ☺️
So glad I found this!! I need to alter sleeves for my thick arms, but I never knew where to start. This has been so helpful!
I’m so happy I could help!!!☺️
Amazing! Thank you and God bless!
Excellent video! Something I've wanted to explore is adding a gusset under the arm. That way you can have the close fit you like and still have mobility, at least that's the theory 😂
Thank yooou!!🙈 That’s a great idea, I’m still on a love-hate relationship with sleeves but I’ll try it to see if the love finally wins the hate 😂
How is adding a gusset different from just making the initial armhole a little smaller. Cuz at the end of the video you said you wanted to explore a larger armhole for more comfort. But isn't that part of causing more restriction when raising the arm up? Just wondering. Hope you can help?🙏
@Ruby Kewa A gusset is a small diamond shaped piece of fabric that allows you to move more freely in tight clothing. You can even cut sleeves in such a way that it has a built in arm gusset. It does add more bulk under your arm though
Thank you so much 🙏
this is exactly what I needed!! the high cap height was gorgeous
Thank you so muuch!!!☺️
I think that one is more suitable for strechy fabrics to get more mobility
In a word, "AWESOME"!!!!
Thank you so muuuch☺️☺️☺️
First of all!! I have asked for this video in my brain at least a thousand times. So!! Thank you!!! I have been sewing for a long time and also have shoulder restriction sensory “issues”. Aka I have torn restrictive sleeves off dresses. THIS is THE video I’ve been waiting years for!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I also really love your editing and presentation style. Your descriptions of the differences in sleeve caps was succinct. Overall such a fantastic video on technical aspects of pattern drafting. Subscribed!! Looking forward to checking out all your videos!!
Thank you soooo much!! These comments make me want to do 616385037152 more comparisons, if only I had time and I could help even more, that would be amazing. I’m really happy it was helpfull🥰 I have an “engineer” brain so I can’t help but add graphs everywhere hehehe
Excellent and informative video. Thank you for explaining this.
Happy to help!! Thank yoooou☺️☺️
You are making my day!!
So happy to hear that☺️
This was interesting. I think it would have helped if you not only showed up the sewed sleeve but the Green Yellow Red pattern alongside it. Just for visual sake. it was a little confusing.
You are right!! I’ll do it next time, thank you for the tip☺️
Que bueno Nuria, bravo!
Graciaaaaaaaas☺️
I wanted to do this experiment for myself and you saved me a lot of work. Thank you so much for sharing! 🥰
Thank you for the nice words!! I’m really glad it’s helpfull and indeed it’s a lot of work hahahah😂
Wonderful video. Really creative. Great information. Thank you.
Thank you so muuuch☺️
This video is so informative! You seem to have confirmed my theory that I won't be able to move in a beautiful high cap woven sleeve. 😅
I’m glad it was useful!! And I think as long as it’s a beautiful sleeve, you can make an exception and not move that day hehehe😋
Greaaaaaat! Thanks
Glad I could help 😄
Great video!! The only suggestion i have, which would fix ur problem of sewing 6 right sleeves, is you should be double notching your back patterns (sleeve cap back and back armholes in your case). That’s how that problem is prevented in the industry.
Thank you so much☺️☺️ I actually did that but I alway forget to turn the pattern if I cut it on one layer of fabric hehe I guess I have to practise using my brain a little bit😋
great video
Thank you so much☺️
Probably the best illustration in real form I’ve seen and I’m OLD er🤣 and have seen many experts try and show this. I’ve learned that one pattern does not fit all activity expectations😂 and to be mindful if this garment will be for example, a church blouse, or an around the house flannel shirt that works for cleaning and yard work. I do agree that gussets offer more range with less bulk, because after all it’s hard to get shape in just one piece. Keep up the good work😉!
Thank you sooo much☺️!! There’s so much to experiment with that it’s hard to choose what the next video should be… I see sleeves is an important topic for a lot of people tho😂 so I’ll try explaining the gusset as soon as I can!!
@@_nuriamoWe're so grateful for the video. You did such a good job at explaining.
How did you manage to get the time, extra fabric and editing to make these videos? I can never find enough extra time to do this.
It's always extremely hard to find time but I LOVE sewing and learning, so I use any spare minute I have... I think this video took me like 1-2 months to make!!! 🥰@@JennaHasm
Nice video❤❤
Thank yoooou☺️
Very interesante
Thank yooou☺️
Woww this is a great tuto, I just hate sleeves lol, i think when you are able to explain as well for everyone to understand, your really a very good pattern seamstress ❤️
Oh and by the way, your ( divan) sorry I’m French but I use to have one exactly like yours, but mine was olive green 😊
Thanks again
So
Thank you soooo much☺️☺️ And it’s a great sofa, when people come visit they sleep there because we don’t have much space and they all say is super comfy hehe😋
Me encantó el video. No sé inglés, cómo me pesa no haberlo aprendido.
Muchísimas graciaaaas!! No estoy segura de si TH-cam tiene subtítulos en español, pero si tienes alguna pregunta dímelo☺️ Y nunca es demasiado tarde para aprender!!! 🤍
Thank you very much this tutorial, but what is a gap height ?😅
Thank yoou☺️ I think you mean the cap height, right? It’s the distance between the bicep line and the top of your sleeve!!
Hello, I have the same problem, and I don't think this is the reason for the wrinkles in the fabric.
Any type of feedback helps me sooo much!! Do you have a theory for why the wrinkles appear?☺️
Just a bit confused, the Winniefred one how much difference is there in mobility between the ease added? They all look similar in appearance and is mobility similar too??
I understnd the confusion☺️! There is not much difference in mobility, the idea is that the shape of the sleeve at the top is more rounded or squared. Here it’s difficult to see because I added a “small” amount (1 to 3cm) but the more you add, the more round/puffy the sleeve is gonna be!! Also, this difference is more noticeable the higher the cap is and here I used a medium cap height unfortunately😢 I hope I helped a little bit🌸
@@_nuriamo I actually have the winniefred book that’s why I am interested. In my experience when I added less ease I felt tightness not in the actual sleeves but in the upper bust area especially with movement of the arms. Did you notice tightness anywhere with less/more ease? I love to sew my own clothes but struggling with mobility. I’m not sure how ready to made clothes give full mobility and perfect appearance too ☹️☹️☹️
I must admit I struggle with the same too, I’m also not used to wearing tight fit clothes so I don’t know if that’s how they should feel😂 In the ones I created there wasn’t any mobility difference but it might be because the sleeves on both sides were different for this video. For the rest of my makes I never use the Winniefred method for the sleeves, I prefer the logic of the Dennic chunman lo because it makes more sense why you add ease or not, maybe you can try that method? I linked a video of a girl explaining the pattern drafting process really really well!!
Did you mention the cap height.?
Yes!! It’s the distance between the top of the sleeve and the bicep line, and depending on how big it is, you will have more or less mobility below your arms ☺️
