    Thank you Ms. Schewe for this AMAZING video. I've been sewing for nearly 60 years and never knew how to do this!! I'm working on my daughter's wedding dress which has a a fitted bodice and the sleeve mobility issue was driving me NUTS!!! I finally got a good nights sleep last night after finishing the adjustments on my bodice muslin yesterday...ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL tutorial!!!

    I've never known about walking a seam, so that's a lifesaver! That's much easier than sewing and getting upset once you get stuck with too much sleeve! And I never thought that taking out any arm space *anywhere* would give you extra room to move! I don't HAVE to have ginormous armholes anymore! LOOOOOVE this tutorial!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!!!💗💗💗💗💗

    • @meerabakshi2676
      @meerabakshi2676 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, I too am amazed how we can calculate like this without actually sewing and undoing the seam on the garment! :-D

  • @pamelaannfuller9410
    @pamelaannfuller9410 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    What a great teacher. And, loved that she showed how to "walk" a seam. Explained "the problem" exactly, and also liked how she speaks to one's intuition. (My Burberry jacket's armholes are WAY WAY too low....so I'm adding material under the arm.)

    • @meerabakshi2676
      @meerabakshi2676 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the above said solution, would not be it more practical to cut the seam allowance that are at the joining the sleave's front and back? Very tricky topic, indeed!

    This is a magnificent tutorial! I was working on a self drafted pattern (based of another tutorial of Morgan Donner) for a medieval kirtle and the first mock-up fits rather nicely, if not for the restricted arm movement. Thank you for the clear examples of each modification and really showing what their effects are! And extra because you refered to historical garments so I think it is even more applicable for my specific needs than a more modern-oriented turorial would be. So thank you very much!

    I am methodically teaching myself how to alter men's shirts to fit me. Re-engineering the armhole has been the biggest challenge. Your video was very informative. Thank you, thank you, Andrea!

    • @Tina06019
      @Tina06019 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Sylvia Herold I do the same thing. Thrift stores so often have a lot of barely-worn men’s dress shirts in nice subtle patterns & solid. I am very busty, but with rather «manly» broad straight shoulders and a large chest - so women’s blouses almost never fit me. Total “gaposis.”
      Here’s my favorite « quick and dirty» fix - nothing special, but it works: I unpick the side seams of the shirt. Then I gather the top 5 inches of the seam on the front of the shirt to a finished length of about 3.75 inches. (Very slight gathering, not noticeable in a dark shirt.). Then I resew the side seam. Of course the front of the shirt will be about 1.25 inches shorter than the back of the shirt at the side seams. You can smooth out the bottom edge or just wear the shirt tucked in.

    • @saundrayork767
      @saundrayork767 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I usually take a tuck, at the top of the sleeve to the underarm, about the size of the seam allowance; this raises the sleeve and armhole. I then ease the difference in the back. I like Tina's play with the side seam and will have to try it.

    • @definitely_summer
      @definitely_summer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tina06019 I have the same full bust dilemmas. Wouldn't have thought of *gathers* --only darts--so I had a WOW moment there! I've got the chunky upper arms to fit, so I am trying to picture where the shoulder seam sits after you do this. Does it move the shoulder seam forward more? That would help, as they always sit too far back on me. I think I'd still have to change the size of the armhole. Thank you for the idea! 🙂

    • @definitely_summer
      @definitely_summer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@saundrayork767 When you take this tuck from top to elbow, does this result in a partial seam on the center of the *sleeve*? I mean does it look like a north to south seam that's visible, where we don't typically see one? Or do you mean a "dart" shape that is on the front of the shirt, from shoulder seam to underarm, downward alongside the bust--and NOT on the sleeve at all? Just clarifying on a new concept to me. Thank you so much!

    This is a wonderful tutorial, very clear and concise. Thank you so much! I think I'll go add gussets to a ton of sleeves now....

  • @AndromedaCripps
    @AndromedaCripps 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your gusset design and suggestion for letting out the seam allowance saved my life! I am such a novice with sleeves and never seem to get them right, and I knew a gusset could help but I needed the most ease at the front of the sleeves, not the armpit, so I toyed with the idea of lengthening out my square gusset. Your oval-like gusset validated that idea of mine and worked wonderfully!! I may have made it a little big, and it might not be the prettiest sleeve ever, but I have incredible mobility now, even with a tailored, fitted waist!
    Also I love that you use and mentioned Janet Arnold!!! I actually got into sewing about 3 years ago from the historical costuming community, so Patterns of Fashion is a familiar series!! Really interesting to learn about the differences in sleeve cap drafting. When I attempted my 18th century jacket a few years ago, I remember being confounded as to why the sleeve cap didn’t look anything like a modern sleeve, and I tried altering it to accommodate for that. I couldn’t fathom how it would fit in the arms eye because I was used to a modern sleeve cap shape. In the end that project was abandoned after much stress and failure. Turns out I shouldn’t have been afraid of the different sleeve cap after all!!!

    THANK YOU. Thank you very much. You just saved
    my current project!
    Background:
    Most of my sewing is 9th to 12th century Northern European garb, which always has a diamond-shaped underarm gusset. However, I had a modern pattern for princess-seamed peplum top which I wanted to make up for office wear. The muslin I made fit perfectly, but I did not put sleeves on the bodice of the muslin. Silly me!
    With the final garment, I could not move my arms once the sleeves were set in.
    For the first part of this video, I thought I would learn how to do better next time. What you showed matched the basic ideas I had figured out, but with really good instructions. Then you showed how to fix an already-cut & sewn sleeved bodice so that you will be able to move your arms! This will work. Thanks again.

    I'm not sure whether I love or hate how fitting issues are sometimes counterintuitive. :D Tighter sleeves for better mobility because more fabric, tighter crotches for making trousers less tight in the crotch because longer crotch line... it's annoying before someone explains it to you, but when you do get a great explanation like this one, it's part of what makes sewing so fascinating!
