8 Day (mostly) Gluten Free Resupply // WHAT I EAT ON A THRU HIKE - Food For A Long Distance Hike

  • This is for the people who are forced to stick to a specialist diet for one reason or another.
    Because for them, preparing for a long distance hike is a special kind of hell... the kind that means stressing for months and months on end about how much food they are going to have to prepare for themselves, and carefully and lovingly package up and mail to themselves en route.
    So to help THOSE people out, here is my idea of a (mostly) gluten free resupply for a typical 8 day section on Te Araroa. I've already covered my resupply strategy for the North Island in a previous video (linked in the WATCH NEXT) section below, but if you're interesting in how to resupply for the South Island (and in particular how to resupply for the Richmond Ranges or Nelson Lakes section of Te Araroa) then this is the video for you!
    **NOTE: It was pointed out to me that the chocolate bars in this resupply video are not gluten free, which is 100% correct. To clarify, I do not have a gluten allergy. As a result, I can eat items which contain gluten, although they make me feel uncomfortable. If you have a gluten allergy, I recommend you use this video as a guide only, and adapt it for your specific needs.

    This is making me reminisce about the times that I hiked the Te Araroa back in 2018! Thanks for the in depth video, I'm hoping to hike the Rocky mountains in Canada so will bear this in mind :)

    I can tell you're getting very keen to get down south. Good on you. I like your approach to your tasty food choice, and good gear selection. Like you said the time of year etc. Enjoy your hike.

      Awesome Connie, hopefully this helped give you some fresh ideas on what to pack out! I would suggest carrying some salt in a small resealable package, as these meals were a little bland once dehydrated. Cheese is a great addition too!

    Thanks Michelle, another really informative video. Very topical for me too as I’m literally today bagging up all my food for my upcoming 14 day hike. That breakfast scramble looks amazing! Might have to try that out myself at some stage. Love those Pic’s PB Slugs too. 👍 Well planned out and good variety over a week’s supply.

      That was good timing then! Good luck for your upcoming hike, I would suggest putting a little bit of salt in with the brekkie scramble mix when you bag it up, otherwise a little bland unless you add heaps of cheese!

    Hi Michelle,
    Ka Pai!
    Great to see what you eat on trail, I’m always interested in what people pack.
    Can’t wait to see more of your hiking videos, might be awhile for me so I’m really enjoying your videos!
    Tomorrow may mean more travel restrictions in Canada.
    Take care

      Ah yes, you are totally right! I will update my description. I was mostly thinking of just the 'main meal' options but this is a bit misleading. Thank you for pointing this out!

    Just how realistic is it for a Celiac to do the Appalachian Trail?

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't really know, as I haven't thru hiked the AT (or anywhere in the USA) and don't know what the options are for picking up gluten free food on the AT. However, I would suggest that with the right amount of planning and preparation, it should be more than realistic and very possible. It will involve assembling your own resupply boxes and sending them to yourself along the way, and hopefully you'll find this video helpful for that.
      Apologies for not having more information for you.. this video is more aimed at showing people what a multi-day gluten free resupply would look like.

    Hi Michelle, as part of my TA prep, I was wondering about water on the trail? How easy/hard is it to find drinking water? How many days worth of water will I have to carry? The worst sections for water? Thanks so much, your channel has been so helpful to me!!!

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Hannah! Thanks so much for your comment. As for your question, water on the North Island is VERY common. There are stretches where you have to be prepared (such as Ninety Mile Beach) but often I could get by easily with just 1L carried at a time. Usually there are streams or other water sources you can fill up at along the way (but I would recommend you treat water gathered from streams etc). An app like Guthook or the recently updated TA App is great for this, as it has hiker comments to let you know if upcoming water sources are reliable. Hope that helps!!

    Hi Michelle,
    How did you freeze dry your eggs? do you have a freeze drier? they are so expensive!

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I may not have mentioned in the video, but I buy the commercially freeze dried Backcountry Cuisine eggs: backcountrycuisine.co.nz/our-products/meal-complements/any/easy-cook-scrambled-egg
      They're actually very palatable, and just add that little bit of salt and energy you need in the morning. Just make sure to ensure they're well soaked!
