    A little over a year ago I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition and was put on a gluten-free diet. That made backpacking a little tricky since all my go-to backpacking foods had gluten in them! So, in this video, I break down some homemade and non-homemade options for gluten-free backpacking!
    I also believe that eating good food makes you perform your best so this video is also great for anyone who wants to eat as healthy as possible while out on the trail!
    Strifrys packed with veggies while backpacking?? YEP!
    Saving money by making your own backpacking food? I cover that!
    Using a vacuum sealer? All in this video!

    The moment I saw a Wild Zora box in the back I was like THIS is the video I've been looking for!! As a cancer survivor & up & coming thru hiker I stress about finding / creating healthy foods for the trail. I'm glad I'm not the only one ! I also became a Holistic Nutritionist back in 2017 ! Much love ❤️

      ❤️❤️❤️ hell yeah! You crush that thru hike with your badass survivor self! I've been dehydrating my own meals (as a holistic vegan and WFPB advocate) and have had some decent success just dehydrating my favorite home cooked meals. @amandaoutside has a great video on how to use a dehydrator and which one to get, and then there is the Backcountry Chef who breaks down which foods dehydrate at which temps, etc. It seems overwhelming but once you jump in, and test run at it home, it's really not as hard as it seems at first. Pro tip: don't dehydrate overnight or it will keep you up smelling the delicious foods 😂

    regarding packing plastic: I'm planning on using some of these reusable silicone bags at least for 2-3 day trips. but this definitely isn't a solution that can be upscaled for longer trips :/

    Hey Arielle, instead of those vaccuum seals, you might want to try the (re)zip bags, that way you at least don't have to consume the plastic over and over, but have a more environmental friendly option :) Thanks for the great video, hope you'll make more food/recipe 'on trail' videos :)

    Thank you for this! I also have Hashimotos, along with several other autoimmune issues and food allergies, and have been gluten free for about 10 years. I was grain free for the first 4 years and slowly started reintroducing grains, it made a world of difference in my health being grain free. I struggle finding allergy/celiac friendly hiking food choices. I'm adding a dehydrator and vacuum sealer to my Amazon list lol

    This was so helpful.. There was a recent study on thru hikers and the food they eat. The outcome. It makes a difference what you eat... even on the trail. Just eating anything because it has calories is not beneficial to your body..

    If the Wild Zora packs are resealable, is it feasible to pour the second serving into the original pack without transferring to a new vacuum sealed bag?

    Hello - would you mind sharing what brand of bulk freeze dried food you bought? Also curious where you found the quick cook quinoa. Thank you.

  • @mimrs12

    Just came across your video, I am not a huge fan of freeze dried food, because of the texture, how does your food rehydrate and where do you buy the bulk items?

    I eat their vegan options (wild zora), and I found powdered almond milk for my oatmeal. I don't use a vacumn sealer just a heat sealer. And so I use oxygen absorbers. If you get the freezer bags, you should be able to add boiling water to the bag.

    i’ve never been backpacking b4 *yet* but i used to camp as a kid! anyways, there are so many *junk food only* videos for backpacking and i had to search *HARD* for this *sent from heaven* video! thx so fricking much!!! 🤍🤍😸😸
    *idky* no one eats vegetables while backpacking! even when i camped as a kid with my church, i would come home and eat *huge* pans of vegetables cuz they didn’t really give us any at camp.
    😹😹 *not* that you care, but my whole life, my favourite food has been broccoli! anyways your channel is lovely!! you made my week!🤍

    Ive been diagnosed with hasimotos since i was a kid plus im a hiker too. Ive been struggling with lots of weight gain.
    They also suggest to be dairy free what's your experiences with that?

    • @neekyme76
      @neekyme76 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Going gluten and dairy free was a game changer for me and dealing with my Hashimotos. I lost 30 lbs the first month after - it was all inflammation weight. I've been steady at my current weight since (10 years). I did go through a really rough withdrawal week, and after researching it, looks like it's a common side effect. Good luck!

    I love this idea! I know it might be a little challenging, but do you know any ways to not use so much plastic while making backpacking food?

    • @ArielleShipe
      @ArielleShipe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not sure if you watched until the end but i actually commented on that! I don’t have a good solution but I’m open for ideas because in my regular life i am super mindful of plastic but have found it so hard for backpacking (store bought or homemade!). I’m wondering if biodegradable vacuum seal bags exist or something like that!

      You can get Mylar pouches as well they are not plastic and more along the lines of what regular freeze dried meals com in. And they can be heat sealed also

    Have you been able to find a brand of vacuum bags that are bpa free? As a holistic nutritionist I’m sure you are up on the research about putting food against plastic packaging at higher temps that may contain bpa/ micro plastics that leech into your food. Have you found a good brand to combat this?

    • @ArielleShipe
      @ArielleShipe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ugh, yes!! Definitely something I’ve been thinking about. I don’t have a perfect solution yet but my vacuum sealer doesn’t use heat so I’ve just been bringing a “stasher bag” the silicone bags and doing my actual cooking in that. It actually works pretty well for backpacking because it self cleans easily with hot water and a good shake. Def let me know if you find any better solutions though! And I’ll be sure to share here if I do as well.

      Could also place the meals in freezer quart size bags and then that is your vessel to cook your meal. That's how I cook mine. I even take the premade meals and split them into two meals via freezer bag. I then label and store in the freezer. Date written on them. I just went out for 4 days and ate on meals I made June of 2019. Still so good. Enjoy your hike
