  • JHS Pedals owner Josh Scott recently released the Bonsai, a magnum opus to the legacy of the Tube Screamer (as it allows users to dial in the tones of 9 historic tube screamer pedals.) Today, he's talking to us about the fun facts he came across during his Bonsai research.

    "that makes them more valuable, doesn't make them sound better", how refreshing it is to hear someone saying something intelligent about old TS components! Really nice interview and I can't wait to try the pedal.

      ha ha, yeah, I knew about the Bonsai but the 5 w world got me focused in on it, I'm battling the premise that I even need ANY pedals when I have two Boss Katanas with every FX you could ever need, plus, when I go jam with the band, the other guitarist is so loud that any "tone concern" I may have had is then irrelevant...............right?

    I bought an OD-1 recently and it's just bloody great. The chip only causes clipping, the tone is in your guitar and playing style. SRV was unique and if he used a $10 OD he'd still sound great! Did Maxon not design the Tube Screamer circuit?

    hahahahah, that ending...

  • @bassilalcheikh1684
    @bassilalcheikh1684 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Chips won't change the sound noticeably, and the spec sheets for any given JRC 4558D-type chip will prove as much. Having said that, as time and usage progresses, the wear on the chip's components inevitably leads to lesser resistance and your sound becomes more "transparent" and less "compressed." The difference is night and day with old TS-808s and newer ones- you don't even have to take my word for it. Ironically, when SRV used his TS-808 on his records/concerts, his pedals were relatively new; so if you wanted to get similar SRV sounds, you're likely to get a little bit closer today using newer 808 pedals than dropping $600-$800 on an old one.
    The sounds do change from 808s, 9s, and 10s though; 9s are reported to be substantially brighter than 10s, and 10s have more bottom compression in their 808 counterparts. It would be cool if pedal gurus designed a double-blind experiment to test aforementioned hypotheses.

  • @codyfoster17
    @codyfoster17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Alright, I really want to know from someone who may know more than me because I'm honestly curious, have JHS EVER come out with anything that's ACTUALLY original that Josh created? It seems like just about every pedal they come out with is just a clone or rehash of something that's already out with and expensive enclosure and name. I think their mods are really cool but do they actually have any pedals that they themselves came up with originally?

    • @belacickekl7579
      @belacickekl7579 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well, stacking 9 separate circuits in one box seems fairly original, but I'm pretty sure that he came up with their "Color box", Crayon, and probably the Andy Timmons too. Plus the VCR

      It has a digital routing system to switch on or off the trail of some components. So, everytime you select a mode, you are actually selecting a componnent routing that is identical to the pedal it came from, but when you change the mode, another route is made. That's really complez

      Hi, I guess I left my answer short; There's this quote/saying: "the only reason i can see further is because I'm standing in the shoulder of giants," Isn't Marshall's first amps based on a modded fender bassman? and so on, on every amp after based on Fender, Marshall, or Vox amps? Isn't every drive pedal based on an existing one from the 70's or 80's? Doesn't a musician influence another musician who then uses the same inspiring chord to create their own music and so on? There's no fallacy in my reasoning, because it's just the way evolution/life works, a creation based on another one.

    • @jackbradley5172
      @jackbradley5172 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DOD, Dist+, Rat are all single op amp, with symmetrical diode clipping to ground, whereas the OD1, despite not having a user changeable tonestack, shares the two opamp, with feedback loop diode clipping in opamp 1 structure which is common to tubescreamers. In summary, ts9/808 are pretty much OD1s with clipping diodes being symmetrical and added tone control in fb loop of second opamp.
      EDIT: od1 first used quad op amp, but parts one and 4 were just in and out buffers if that changes anything lol.
