The question is, did he really trick Mister Death into buying all those things and being late for the child, or did Mister Death grant him his wish by playing along?
Twilight Zone episodes tend to be allegorical in nature. There is emphasis in the underlying nature of the story trying to be expressed rather than an expose on concrete reality. But it is true that a lot of the values displayed here are from a time when people didn't automatically expect the worst out of each other. Manners and decorum were still an implied social contract. What most don't ever consider, is why we all have an EXACT TIME OF DEATH!! How is it someone who is hospice and zero chance of cure, does not DIE the day before, the week before, or the next day or next week! In fact i have seen those on their death bed have labored breathing for hours on end, then FINALLY take their last breath! Why at that exact time? Or how about a plane crash, where all those people all gathered at the same place and time, to all die together? Death is the most curious thing to me, in wondering, where we may go after Death is somewhere that can only except a certain amount at one time?
I know you guys have your issues, but I think you forgot that this episode was more about how death comes to you. I had a vision of angels twice in one day. Also had a dream, someone called me and said my brother was dead, asked why, person said my brother was beat up. My brother did die in his sleep a year later though.
Down vote from me. This one is full of heart, something you 2 don't understand anything about. This was a sweet character who cheated Death but gave up his own life rather than see an innocent girl get taken away. Ed Wynn had trouble remembering his lines, had to read a lot from cue cards but his acting cannot be faulted. If you've seen the film "Mary Poppins" he played Uncle Albert, the man who had the tea party on the ceiling. He also had his own TV show for a time.
I know this actor pretty well he was also the voice of the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland. I just was never crazy about this episode. And him around all those kids all the time would not fly today. lol. But it is all in fun.

I think Death became the mayor of Amity Island. It would explain a lot of "Jaws".

Ed Wynn portrayed Uncle Arthur in the original Mary Poppins film back in 1964. Great actor.
Before computers and pop-up ads, there were sidewalk salesman. When we walked downtown, these sidewalk vendors would pop up.
