Honestly this episode does have it's episodes but it is by far one of my personal favorite episodes of the Twilight Zone.
This is one of my favorite episodes for many reasons, I just want to say I think the point was for him to be a low grade pitchman, someone not too successful. Someone in a similar predicament as the episode with Carol Burnett.
But I never viewed this ending a singular one, I viewed this as a question to those watching. Did he succeed in making his Pitch for the Angles? Or did Death succeed with his Proper Appointment?
A little bit of a melancholy way of looking at it. However an ending like that, regardless, is what a lot of series should be striving for. That perfect Bittersweet.

God, I love that part.
How different would the scene have gone though if Death just said "I'm afraid not".

I loved this episode, Death wasn't depicted as being cruel or dark, just someone doing his job. and the pitchman's acceptance of his fate, doing so to save the life of the little girl was really heartwarming
I’ve never considered death to be cruel but more as a gift or a that friend who waits patiently for their moment with you never begrudging the time you don’t spend with them. So I truly love portrayals like this, or the Discworld Death.
That is exactly what Death is. It is not cruel or evil or anything. It is simply natural process that has to happen no matter what anybody wants or says or anything. In this human form, Death is simply only doing its job and has no other motives for his actions.
I always thought of Bookman’s slower character as being more relevant to him as an older man, one who is past his prime. His day of fast pitching is past him, which always lent a more melancholy air to the episode. I feel he is more relatable in that sense, as many people either feel that way, or know someone who has felt that way. The glory days are past, but he never made the big time.
Good point. But the point of that scene is that he “gets his groove” back, which isn’t well communicated by the performance. I think that’s more the point. Greetings from the future.
To me it seemed like Death knew what was going on. He allowed himself to be distracted, but he also acted like he didn't. I mean yea Death was a serious character, but I also see him as a con man or trickster to get his way. That's why his back up plan was the one person his target would give himself up for. Death knew it from the start, he just had to set up the cards for a finale play.
I too got the same idea. Death knew what the man was trying to do, so played along. Death was never shown to be cruel, if anything he soothed the man's passing, by giving meaning to his death.
Yeah, I got that feeling too. He seemed to purposely take the bait, knowing how it would end.
I agree. But in a way that the whole thing was a test for the guy. Would he sacrifice himself to save the girl? Or not? That's why he got to go "up there". Self Sacrifice.
Nice to see at least a handful of others saw it the same way I did.
Plus you can tell.
This episode was so wholesome, and I cried when he accepted death
It's kinda odd that the two characters that Ed played in this series kinda oppose each other. This one starts out in denial of his mortality and ends up accepting it. His other role in ninety years without sleep had him already accepting of his mortality and that he is going to die, but then rejects it as he wants to live to spend time with his great grandchild.
You should see the episode with Robert Redford.
He accepted death because he would be remembered.
I also cried in the end When Lou is smiling and has accepted his death you can still see that hr is emotional because he's gonna miss those children and his home.
I love when Death is presented as a honest and reasonable person and still manages to get his way
"May your soul be more prepared for when you return. I assure you, we will meet again."
"No offense, but I hope that will be many long years from now."
*Smiles* "It is never as long as you might wish for."
what can the harvest hope for, if not the care of the reaper man?
"You might be a king or a little street sweeper, but sooner or later you dance with the reaper."
But he’s still a fair man. He recognizes Bookman’s kindness and selflessness and so decides to give him the ultimate reward, sending his soul to heaven. I love that.
"But throughout his life a man beloved by the children, and therefore, a most important man."
Gosh just writing that quote got me a little misty-eyed.
The greatest thing about the twilight zone is that the anthology setting made it ideal for experimentation in terms of concepts, stories, and visuals.
I always had the feeling that some Twilight Zone episodes might have actually been back door pilots, especially the episodes that never had any conclusion, like Black Leather Jackets or to Serve Man.
Honestly, the Twilight Zone's idea of Death being more of a patient being who doesn't want people to fear it, instead of the usual evil malevolence we need to fear, is pretty cool. I can't remember 100%, but don't they usually take that route when they do stories based on agents of Death? I remember one story down the line (involving an older lady, I think) that also portrayed Death as being a benevolent entity
I know what episode you're talking about. Death did trick her, but only so he could talk to her.
Robert Redford played him in that episode. Good episode.

It's kinda like Death from The Sandman. She's just doing her job and is very compassionate

Death from Terry Patchett’s “Discworld” is also somewhat similar. While frightening at times, he’s certainly not malicious or malevolent; his reaping is just his occupation. And every so often, he does break his by-the-book customs in order to perform some good deed.

Robbie the Robot, the ventriloquist dummy, Same actor played a martin twice in the series so it could be debated as to if it is the same character, Abraham Lincoln was in Back there and the Passerby.
I’ve heard a lot of people speculate it’s the same person but I think that’s only half correct....similar to the Doctor he transforms into distinct personas that all hold the same job title and abilities, but approaches them differently depending on that personality Death has taken. In this episode, Hamilton is fair and impartial. In the Hitch-Hiker, Strong is unsettling and prefers the hands off stalking approach. In Nothing in the Dark, Redford is charming and encouraging. Death becomes whatever he deems the situation demands.

One For The Angels is an engaging and heart touching installment in TTZ just for Bookman's and Mr. Death's contrasting personalities alone. Definitely even more excited for what Walter has to say about the forthcoming episodes
Here’s how I imagine a pitch for the angels would go:
“So, you have some gizmos to sell me?”
“Yes sir I do!”
“Amazing! Though I feel like this is all one big distraction from my goal.”
“Oh, you got me, sir!”
“Yeah, that’s going to be pretty hard for you to do.”
“Actually, it’s going to be super easy, barely an inconvenience!”

This episode has one of my favourite endings in the series. It's incredibly touching.
I know ur comment is old but it's relevant through time. This was one of my mother's favorite episodes. And made her emotional and happy I see why and those are one of the memories I share with her
i think this episode was wrote in terms of making it a more up note to contrast the other episodes, and its actually a good episode in my opinion, the way he asked "up there?" is hearth waring cuse he wasnt sure if he had been a worthy person to be there.... even after the fact that he just saved the life of a little girl
Most episodes with Death are in fact upbeat. A little bit dramatic, such as with a dying child...but it always builds to an earned happy ending that makes me smile.

It really is! Maybe this could be a thing! Theres Tales from the Darkside, Outerlimits, Tales from the Crypt. Mmmmm those are all similar though but also different. Not by much though.
Ed Wynn was one of the most likable, endearing, and heartwarming actors in Hollywood. To have Serling write him as Bookman just showed he knew how much of a kind spirit Wynn was. When I saw this episode on TV with my dad, we both grinned ear to ear at the end. While many Twilight Zone shows ended in some tragic fashion, this one ended in joy. ♥
This was one of the first episodes I saw and it's what hooked me. Nothing scary or a twist so complex just a simple story of a man accepting his mortality in his own way
My favorite episode, One for the Angels is always so interesting to me.
The original Twilight Zone series was one of my late mother's favorite shows. Watching these videos makes me think of her. Thank you, Walter and Channel Awesome!
I saw this episode before on a rerun. I think Mr. Death really didn't want to take the girl and knew Mr. Bookman wouldn't skip town and let the girl die, so he played along with Mr. Bookman's sales pitch and allowed the girl to live and so Bookman could have his "One for the Angles" as a parting gift.
The Mad Hatter in the twilight zone , now that's pretty cool.
I always love the possibility that Death was playing along. He knew that Bookman was a friend to children and that he would have no need for the stuff that he was pitching. Plus, if you look very closely at the clock when Maggie recovers and Bookman offers himself as "a personal manservant", it's 11:58. He was two minutes shy of the deadline.
That "life for a life bargain" trope always keeps you guessing until the end. Reminds me of the series Smallville when Clark proposes to Lana, Lana died in a freak car accident, Clark made a deal with Jor-El to save her life by turning back time, so Jonathan Kent ended up dying from heart failure instead. Watching stuff like that is so suspenseful & never gets old.
People often forget that the Twilight Zone could have some very sweet and touching moments. I loved this episode because I felt even though he died, he was assured by Death that he would be going to a better place. A very sweet but morbid end. But that’s what makes the Twilight Zone so great. It’s ability to even take terrifying concepts like death and remind us that sometimes death can also be a bringer of peace, of relief from pain, and even an escort to a much better place.
Even just watching this short review is enough to bring tears to my eyes. I absolutely adore this episode, it's almost never on any best of episodes lists but it means so much to me.
One of my favourite episodes. It's very simple but packs an emotional punch.
The character of Lou kinda reminds me of a more optimistic and selfless Willie Loman from _Death Of A Salesman._ I wonder if the writers and Rod Serling got some inspiration from him for this.
This may not be as renown as other Twilight Zone episodes, but I love the whole concept of a salesman able to make such a pitch that he actually distracts Death from carrying out his job.
A wonderful second episode in the whole series that mixes that cautionary "be careful what you wish for" phrase, as seen in Bookman's attempt to outwit Mr. Death, and the bittersweet, yet heartwarming outcome in that he did make the pitch "one for the angels" by literally selling his soul to Mr. Death, to save the life of someone he loved. If there were another title worthy for this episode, it could also be "No Greater Love", based on the New Testament verse. Beautiful exchange in the final words between Bookman and Death, "Up there. You made it."

I really love listening to Walter speak. I love hearing him analyze episodes, so intelligent, yet accessible, such a very pleasant voice to listen to.
"One For the Angels" is sweet and it showed that the Twilight Zone could be more than just another grim drama.
Plus, it's always wonderful to see the late great Ed Wynn and this just might be my favorite episode with him.
Honestly this is my favorite twilight zone episode, Lou Bookman is such a great character and death is haunting in all the right ways.

The salesman isn't supposed to be "an American Success Story", I think. He's a bit like Willy Loman, but a cheerful one.

I feel one for the angels was a better episode than where is everybody and deffinetly where the series really started for me. It went down more of a moral route and had more of a fantastical element which is what made the show what it is. A dimension where anything you can imagine can exist. The thing is the twilight zone itself is a character, shown to be at some points benevolent and at some points malicious depending on the person that it is focusing on.
This episode does bring a tear to my eye. No matter what flaws others see, I would always grow to love this episode.

I'm now anticipating your review of "Night of the Meek", which is an even more bittersweet episode, and one of my favorite Christmas episodes of any media.
And this one was also a favorite of mine, partially because of that twist that he gave "one for the Angels" to the *Angel* of Death.
My eyes skimmed right over these thumbnails in my sub feed, but I'm glad I watched. Always wanted to watch Twilight Zone as an adult, though I haven't gotten around to it. These quick uploads have renewed my interest.
Mr. Rod Serling was a genius. I never get tired of watching The Twilight Zone.
The Idea of Death being something that can have compassion, joy and sorrow is strangely comforting.

I love this series!!
Personally, this has always been a favourite episode of mine. 'The Twilight Zone' has such a strong reputation for horror and dark, cruel twists, but this is one of the many episodes that actually had a really positive outcome, even if it was bittersweet. It was a man accepting his fate, at first running from it with cowardice but ultimately coming to see it as just another part of life, and doing so to save the life of someone else.
Also, Ed Wynn never bothered me as Bookman. He's meant to be an older man who isn't good at his job, so him being unsuited for the archetype of a fast-talking salesman always made sense to me. The entire point is that he's not good at what he does anymore, that he's past his prime and can't keep up the pace anymore. The only reason he was able to convince Mr Death to listen to him was because Mr Death was a stranger in a strange land who had probably never met a street pitcher before, and fell for every blatant lie Bookman told him.
This one is definitely underrated and is my favorite episode

I love this episode! One of my favorite twilight's.
Since I haven't seen much of anything with Ed Wynn, haven't seen Alice or Poppins, I completely believed his performance. The pitch he offers Death was awesome and seeing him sweating and be so enthralled by what was being sold to him is impossible to forget.

I recall my father and how much he loved this episode . He was in his late 50,s then and I was 9 but he somehow related to Ed Wynn .
This is definitely one of my favorite episodes and is sadly overlooked. The fact the Ed Wynn is so likable carries much of the story.
This episode is a great introduction to the Twilight Zone for those who aren't used to or like the strange and eerie. It's not as disturbing and it gives some hope as well.

I’m so glad you like this episode. I know it’s not as popular or as well regarded as some of the more famous or iconic episodes of the classic Twilight Zone, but this is actually my favourite episode of the series. It distills what the series is about (normal people having their moral code challenged by the fantastic) to its purest form. Ed Wynn and Murray Hamilton are fantastic. The former not being a fast talker never bothered me because of his charisma and charm. And the latter I love for his portrayal of Death not as a ghoulish spectre or an ethereal being, but as a bureaucrat. A government employee not without compassion, but who just wants to get this over with. And I always think of Murray Hamilton in this over Jaws.

I always took that pitch working as it did as Death knowing full well what was happening. He got his target as intended by letting himself be "tricked"
The song in the background of the ending of this episode used to and still does freak me out. This remains my favorite episode.

When i first saw this episode, (just 10 years ago) the kid of my friend died from a car hit.
I literally saw the episode and the kid died on the next day. It was really sad because it reminded me how lucky some people are... to get to be alive until old age and how some others don't ever get the chance :(

Honestly, I really liked Mr. Bookman's pitch at the end, even his slow talking nature I think helped it as it gives an idea that he can entice with his words rather than distract, and it is also helped that he has a very much kind and lovable nature about himself.

This was one of the first twilight zone episodes I ever saw. Immediately I knew why it was awesome. It is one three episodes of TV that actually moves me to tears.
This is one of the first ones i remember, i love these uplifting episodes: this, night of the meek, etc.

I love how the show depicted Death in the episode Nothing in the Dark. It's so lighthearted and loving that I can't help but tear up when I watch it.
I watch Twilight Zone for the thrills! But this episode is so sentimental, it’s one of my favorites.
