To those who rapidly hit the dislike button PLEASE think before you do so. people take their time to teach or show their trade secretes or even just want to share which means they give you something for free. If you disagree, OK just leave but don't discourage those who takes their time to make us great videos. If you have a better ideas OK, write them in the comment, share so we can all learn extra tip but avoid the dislike bottom in these type of videos that people share.

Yep. Think how much longer it takes him to do this job while the talks over his shoulder to the camera, and how the heck does he get somebody willing and able to jocky the camera in those tight spaces? Plus while he's doing all this stuff he's actually teaching his craft so any dummy can imagine it's all possible, and doing it all with such good humor and patience.

Great video - I would add that unless the full bottom of the tub is sitting flush on the floor, it would need to be installed seated in a bed of mortar. This method would pretty much guarantee no cracking.
Unfortunately, I cut corners installing my acrylic tub and it started cracking a lot after a few years

Im a plumber from texas. I like seeing how different parts of the country do their work ... this comment is the start of this video
First edit... he is talking about a second floor application
2nd edit... i think just going abs all the way without that funky brass and copper with glue joints would be better
3rd edit... ya i only like compression joints in cabinets that you can access
4th edit... i set all my tubs with a mortar bed to "make it soild"

    • @chrisgraham2904
      @chrisgraham2904 3 ปีที่แล้ว

If your from Texas, Jeff isn't operating from a different part of the country...he's in Ottawa, Canada. Yes...this is an installation over joists which could be a second floor or a first floor over a basement or crawlspace. Canadian building code doesn't require an access panel or shut-off valves for a tub and shower installation, but it's always recommended if they can be provided. The mortar bed provides stability, especially preventing any flex from acrylic tubs and it aids to eliminate that hollow sound when showering.

I always put a ledger board along the inside wall to support the inside edge of the tub. A tub full of water and an adult will sag some if the inside edge is not supported from underneath. It is especially noticeable when you use tile and grout for your tub surround.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY

Hi Sarah, the only Option you have is to apply silicone to the drain and the threaded pipe and install cross threaded and hope the silicone seals it. otherwise you need to open a hole in your ceiling and install a new fitting to receive the drain. Cheers!

Great video, just like all of them. But I have a question. I am wanting to instal a shower/bath combo tub, as in the video. But on my non-drain end, instead of it being in an alcove wall, I am wanting that wall to be a tiled Bench area that someone could sit on. I am building this in a tight space bathroom and do not really want to have the 2x4 border on the length of the tub and tile that up, etc. I am hoping that I can put in a tub, wall on the drain side, wall on the inside, then bench on the far side. I can't seem to find anything on youtube that has done this. I am wondering, do I go drop in tub? Or stick with alcove tub and have a lip that is "1 tile" high and attached to the 2x4 bench, then to the wall? Thoughts?

I love your videos! Great work! Hey, any particular tub brands/models you would recommend for folks in the USA? I'm looking at acrylic tubs now and in addition to the choice paradox, I'm seeing lots of variable reviews even for $800 Kohler tubs. Thanks.

Thanks for the nice instructional video!. Only qualm I have about copper drain pipe is that they corrode. Major problems in old condos with old corroding copper drain pipes. And that flexible copper pipe looks like it's not going to last

I agree with you on that. I had a rental property where my renter kept putting Draino in the drain and it destroyed the traps under the sinks and metal tub drains. It was a very expensive fix under that tub! Grrrrrrrr!

I'm installing a new tub this weekend but I haven't seen any of your videos where you use mud underneath. What kind of mud should I use and how do I apply it correctly?

Your videos have been very helpful Jeff, Thank you. I'm doing an acrylic tub this week. I have the OS&B kit but wondering if you use the joint compound on those? Or just trust in the compression fitting, brass nut and rubber seal. Also, how do we tighten the ABS connector for the down pipe once the tub is in place? Or do you get it pretty close and then trust gravity to keep the water flowing down, until a plug up I guess. Thanks, Zam

Just make sure all the measures and tight everything up before drop tub.
Also, use waterprove thread for metal joint and silcone all the time.

Hey Jeff - love the videos always a pleasure learning from you. What are your thoughts on setting an acrylic tub on a bed of mortar. My brother is a pretty big guy and cracked the last tub he had. He’s not looking to spend a lot on a reinforced tub. Any other ideas to transfer the weight? Thanks again Jeff

it works. just make sure to do a dry run on the tub install first so you know it is in the right place , or be able to connect the drain from underneath. Cheer !

Pro tip: Install a tub that is deep enough for a good bath, 20 inches is good. The cost differential between a shallow tub and a deeper tub is slight. Opt for the deeper tub.

Thank you. This was helpful. My best friend wants to install a tub so I'm trying to see the best techniques. He's going to have to build the alcove- the tub he wants requires a mortar bed though-- do you have any videos showing how to do a mortar bed for an alcove tub?
Also, do you have any experience installing a direct drain (where the P-trap is under the tub drain instead of the overflow)? I need to correct a DIY mistake from previous owners who cut all the way through a floor joist for the P-trap under the overflow of an above-the-floor drain tub. My plan is to have the overflow sweep over to the drain instead of vice versa, increase to 2" P-trap for better drainage, and create a vent (as it currently does not have a vent-- although later on the plumber tried to add in circuit vents but it is still a mess).

Looks like the studs were planed down to accommodate the tub. Did you find the alcove like that, or did y’all do it?

I use a bed of mortar mix. Im in texas though. The mortar makes the bottom of a fiberglass or acrylic tub more sturdy. Once you have it level hit screws in the lip
