    I had a really good canteen and didn't realise it was WWI until after I sold it on eBay about ten or twelve years ago
    I sold it in the WWII section and discribed it as having an unusual wide webbing strap it sold for a fare bit for the time so I suppose others knew what it was
    Later while looking at books I realised that it would've been from WWI
    I have another one that I believe is from WWI but with leather straps like the Lighthorse would have used

    • @27thinfantrybattalionaif59
      @27thinfantrybattalionaif59  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bummer about that first canteen. The leather Lighthorse straps were used in WWII, but it would be great to know if it were from WWI. Fantastic anyways. Don't throw it away too easily!

    There is some interesting photos of some 10th battalion scouts who were using p1871 webbing equipment during the Gallipoli campaign. I suspect if they survived and got to France they would probably have updated their gear.

My great great grandad and his brothers fought in the light horse in Palestine all 3 got military medals and one got the dcm I do have one relative a bit distant he was my great great grandmothers cousin he was awarded the DCM for taking out a enemy machine gun post and he was my only Aussie relative who fought on the western front. My English great great grandfather was a sergeant at suvla bay and later became a lt in Palestine. I do hope to one day do what you do and get my own uniforms and stuff. Cheers

    Greetings, I liked your video and wish you the best of luck in gathering the rest of the Australian kit. I currently reenact under the 5th Bn AIF as a hobby, and just thought I would leave the general comment (and by no means trying to be an authenticity nazi) that you are also missing the Small Box Respirator (SBR), which would have been issued to infantry soldiers in 1917.

    I shoot service rifle competitions at a shooting range using a SMLE mkIII no. 1 used in ww2, and I would like to get an accurate uniform.
    I've had multiple family members go to war, such as Gallipoli, passchendaele and the attack on beersheba

      Hello Wendy. My apologies for the late response. I acquired the uniform from Warwicks Militaria in Victoria, Aus. Incredible family history! Luckily, the Australian uniform used on the western front in WWII is not too dissimilar from that of WWI.

    • @27thinfantrybattalionaif59
      @27thinfantrybattalionaif59  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aussies used the Martini-Henry rifle when is was still a colony of Britain and during the Boer War(s), then only shortly after. Another widely-used rifle was the "Greener Martini-Henry", which was a variant with a custom cartridge. Although it was not a general service rifle long after Federation, it was used until the end of WW1.
