In this video, we'll look at a 2-stroke, gas-powered Husqvarna weed eater string trimmer that will not stay running and there is an easy to replace $0.75 part that is usually to blame. Most owners of this type of equipment will throw these away rather than take the time to figure out why they won't run properly. The part they need to fix it is easy to obtain and costs pennies. They're available on on major web retailers and most parts stores. They are called a "carburetor metering diaphragm". Watch this video, learn how to replace them, and never throw away another gas string trimmer as long as you live.

Hey Brad. Just from experience on Husqvarnas, you can bottom out the adjustment screws and then unscrew them 2.5 revolutions to set them to the factory air/fuel ratio. Usually a good starting point for adjustment. Also, I would suggest adjusting while the carb is tight to the intake, since it will suck air and run lean, possibly throwing off your adjustment.
Good to know someone is keeping the dying trade alive!

Was thinking the same thing... Didn't see him nut down the carb with the air cleaner off (doesn't mean he didn't off camera tho) so can only assume it was sucking air....

Alot of times the reason people have carb issues is because of not miximg fuel correctly...AND carb cleaner can fix the issue half of the time...had a lawn/landscaping business for 15yrs and did 80% of the work on them myself

The first thing I would have tried is cutting the trimmer line much shorter. You have about 6" too much line. That alone will make the engine bog.

When I lived down in south Louisiana I found a lot of good mowers on the curb with minor issues. For a guy like me it was a gold mine of cool free stuff and scrap metal everywhere. I found crates of stainless steel forks, spoons, butter knives etc one day...more than I had room for. Not sure what that was about. Plus about 150 mini sterling silver collectible spoons that looked like they came from tourist destinations. Sold those for a dollar each to a silver scrapper. One time I found a drum set and about 100 microscopes in a dumpster. Put together a nice microscope from parts of them. Most were missing parts or damaged.

If you really want to go the cheap route, I've managed to unmummify those pumper diaphragms by soaking them in lacquer thinner. Sometimes it takes 20 minutes, sometimes a day, sometimes 2 - but they will eventually soften and can be reused. Done it many times before. If you rebuild the carburetor and it still won't rev up, check for a plugged spark arrestor screen. If it's carboned up, use a propane torch to heat up the screen red hot so the carbon catches fire and burns off. Dunk the red hot screen in cool tap water. The thermal shock blasts all the ash off the screen - no scrubbing required. Use a small vise grip to hold the screen by a corner. Great video and thanks for sharing!

I have a 14 year old Sears push mower that has a Briggs & Stratton Platinum engine on it. Run nothing by synth oil and ethanol free gas in it. I couldn't kill that thing if I tried. Small carbs love that ethanol free gas.

On that little husky, the quick test is a little trick that you fire it up to the point it's running as fast as it can and put your thumb over the air intake port and very quickly let off . What that does is build a high vacuum to draw any crap out of the main jet . Don't make adjustments to the carb unless someone has messed with it . Too many guys start messing with adjustments when there is most likely a small amount of trash that needs to be gone . Oh, if you are a little slow removing youre thumb it might take removing the spark plug, shooting it with carb cleaner or brake Kleen and blow it out because of flooding . :)

I rarely bother trying to adjust a bad carb if it's got the proprietary heads on the needles - chances previous owner had the tools to screw them up is very low. If fresh fuel, good fuel lines and clean filters are confirmed jump straight to ripping the carb apart.

The diaphragm may just be stiff from sitting, often you can just play with them to keep it running and Rev it as you can and it will lose up. Don't adjust anything till you try or you will be doing it again.

for you gas use premium ethanol free from a dedicated pump (only for premium ethanol free) so you don't get what in the line and hose from the person before you especially on small purchases. I use Husqvarna XP or Echo Redmax oil and don't have any problems. Run the premium ethanol free on all your small engines. I use it on my chainsaws, trimmers, any small engine.

Great video, I recommend a guard on the string trimmer for 2 reasons, one it cuts the line to the right length. When the string is too long it bogs down the engine and can over heat. Also it appeared to be smoking too much and this could cause the spark arrester in the muffler to carbon up over time.
