As a physician I can say my reasons are as follows: 1. ungrateful, entitled patients who think doctor Google is a replacement for my years of education and clinical experience. 2. the push to see more and more patients without pay increases by corporate medicine 3. high staff turnover 4. not enough staff to facilitate the volume of patients and administrative tasks that come along with that 5. patients who lack any personal responsibility for their health 6. lack of time for myself and my health/hobbies/interests 7. patients think all you are supposed to do is be at their beck and call 24/7 as if they are more important than you or they are your only patient. 8. patients unrealistic expectations as to what a doctor can actually do in 10-20 min visit. Like no, I can't address your acne, diabetes, hair loss, hypertension in this follow up. Make another appointment. Number 1 is the main reason though. If you know what you have and how you should be treated, then why did you make a doctor's appointment? And if you aren't going to follow up and just doctor hop, obviously I can't make you better. It sometimes takes time and some follow ups to get down to the bottom on the problem and come up with a treatment plan. Huge red flag for me is patients who complain about their previous doctor saying they didn't help them or didn't listen. 9/10 it's that the patient didn't get the answer they wanted the first time and has seen multiple doctors for the same problem. I'm over medicine.
As an orthopedic surgeon, the best decision I made was to leave the public healthcare system and move to a private practice, granted, I took quite an amount of debt to start the business, but it was worth it. I should add that student debt isn't as high in Mexico (where I went to med school) as it is in the States, but doctor's fees aren't as high either.
@@nizaziza9679 Indeed, I don´t have the exact number, my dad paid for my tuition, him being a construction worker, but he told me once he had saved around 150,000 pesos (about 13000 USD back in the day) to send me to school, and that he didn´t have to use all the money, I have to add that it was a public university though, private ones are pretty expensive
For me, the biggest kicker is the work hours. As a med student, you have almost no free time to enjoy your youth. When you go into residency, you're committing the rest of your young adulthood to working grueling, abusive hours. The light at the end of the tunnel is 4-8 more years away once you graduate med school. I matched into IM, and I dread the idea of 70-80 hours weeks as a PGY1. I can't imagine how brutal neurosurgery and GS is. I'm kinda jealous of the Dental students who can go into 40 hour residencies or general dentistry straight out of dental school
Love your videos… can you make videos on understanding the business of healthcare ? Like things we should know as future doctors, how we should navigate healthcare admin, what to consider when negotiating a salary
Kevin you have such a nice idea with this cycling idea. I love cycling so much too. But I'm from Europe. And in America, cycling is terrible. City design sucks Thank you so much for this nice video reminding us of how serious it is to be social and exercise and sleep
Being a doctor is exhausting. I went into dis field thinking i would be doing the work of Allah(swt) bt i moved further away from my faith. Seeing the evil not the evil ppl do to each other in the casualty but hw badly we as doctors treat each other. I watched one of my best friends die of diabetes, he was specialising, he did not hv time for his family or care for himself. I saw him deteriate, bt i never will hv the authority to speak im just a simple gp. I could only listen to his pain. I hv lost numerous close friends/physicians to suacide. By this point i thought mayb if i did psychiatry id make a difference and i would be able to help. Bt the jokes abt mental ilness even from the learned is infuriating and heartbreaking. So i give up and stay cos i hv bills to pay. My love, passion has been sucked out of me in pass 14years. Yes any1 can judge me i really dnt care. I never thought that a profession were empathy and caring would lead me to the empty vessel iv become. I love my patients dnt get me rong bt i love my family too, but i work long hours and i worry my nieces will forget my name one day.
Hope you are doing okay. It's hard to lose people to suicide. I know how hard it is to feel that you have gone further away from your creator. May be try to talk to Allah(swt), make dua, say to him what you said here, try to connect with Him again. I m thinking of going into med school in my 30s , I wanted to be a doctor but situations didn't allow.

You read my mind!
You missed the threat of litigation , the ratings online that are not fair and make medicine the same as a hotel or restaurant
@@Journeyofamomdoc oh yeah that too! Ugh completely agree with you!
I can't stand with ungrateful and disrespectful patients. They aacted like they're GOD and need to be treated like a GOD.
@@fabian9164 Huh? Patients act like they are god?
Yes to all of that! Going to med school was the biggest mistake for me. I’m so burned out!

The student debt not being as high in Mexico is a great add of info

I’m not surprised: unhappiness is an epidemic in the US today - mental health issues are flourishing with todays comfort crisis 😮
