    I like the idea that anger is just another side of loving kindness. We get angry with other people when we want to control them for, we think, their own good, but they resist or don't understand. We need to turn this wrong attitude into one just of wanting the best for others without our having to exert control.

    • @kiringuyen

      Well said!

    • @patrickdallaire5972
      @patrickdallaire5972 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What you are describing reminds me of non-attachment. We would probably benefit the most from loving-kindness without clinging to a certain outcome, especially when that outcome is, like you mention, outside of one's control. To have the wisdom of the latter - the extent of our control in the present moment - would be another skill worth developing.
      If I understand Buddhism correctly, the pathological desires (tanha) that lead to unnecessary, if not all, suffering (dukkha) can be characterized by the following 3 poisons:
      * Delusion (ignorance, confusion)
      * Attachment (greed, lust)
      * Aversion (Anger, hate, disgust)
      Reassuringly, the more wholesome desires (chanda) that can free us from some, if not all, suffering can be characterized by the following 3 antidotes:
      * Non-Delusion (Wisdom)
      * Non-Attachment (Generosity)
      * Non-Aversion (Loving-Kindness)
      For a long time, I severely misunderstood the 3rd noble truth. I thought his holiness was advocating for the complete absence of desire. However, now I believe that, during this lifetime at least, this is impossible. The best thing we can do while we are bound to all the impermanent conditions of our reality is to curate our desires to the best of our abilities.

    This is why we have to be so careful these days when everyone wants to "cancel" someone just for having different feelings or opinions than theirs. It's often not as extreme as people fear. But, even in the case of outright, more extreme hatred, if it is met with more hatred and extremism, it can't help, and we are seeing that. I am so grateful for this message and the perspective shift. I'm sad so many people claim they want to help change the world to a more compassionate place, yet they are still saying and doing things to others that encourage the opposite. Things are so intense and reactive these days, we definitely all need this wisdom. I pray we absorb it well for the betterment of humanity (myself included!) 💖

    We spend all our time lost in thought. Recognizing anger in the mind and body in a state of mindful awareness inherently shortens the half life of said anger. In other words don’t add fuel to the anger and hatred fire. You have to think of reasons why you’re angry to remain angry. You have to think of reasons why you hate to continue hatred. Simply acknowledge the feelings of anger and hatred as another appearance in consciousness and you will find it dissipates.

    He talks about hatred for others and hatred for self, then gives a really good example and explanation of turning hatred for self into loving kindness, by recognising that at the base of it, hatred for self might be an expression of a need to be better. So, the need to be better is what on the surface seems like self hatred. Can anyone give a similar example or explanation of how to turn feelings of hatred for others into loving kindness? What aspect of loving kindness could be at the base of hatred for others? Especially feelings of hatred towards other people who have harmed or wronged you.

    So in a way, my anger or rage can be transformed into a strong force of loving compassion!
    So.. Anger is a gift?... (Rage Against The Machine. - Freedom.)
    If it is used in compassion, for what is right and good? I think it might be. If anger is used in compassion then it is a more "aggressive" form of compassion. That might be the answer! Thanks

    Every concept holds its opposite; I learned this in a critical theory course years ago. In the work I do now, I recommend that students of English learning new vocabulary remember the principle to double their acquisition. (Always learn the antonym for a word if it has one because it will be easy to remember with respect to its opposite.) I love that Mingyur Rinpoche applies this basic idea to an epistemology of love.

    @aerialkate 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I don't think he explained this one too well. I've seen a few clips and I like what I've seen up until now, but I was looking for a more detailed or helpful exposition here. No, unless we're fundamentally sadistic, which most of us are not - we don't actively want to hate; surely we're just venting because we're frustrated about being misunderstood or some wrong that's been done to us; in which case, let's face it - we want to do damage - to teach a lesson. That seems to be human nature. I don't see how this clip helps us tranform anger into love.

    • @egon2404
      @egon2404 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Isn't wanting to teach someone a lesson = wanting for that someone to be better? This video explains how deep down, the root of our frustrations is actually love and compassion, and not some evil, rotten reason as we might think. When you realize this, the guilt and the negative feelings disappear and you find yourself transforming even your worst anger into an assertive, calm action. Everyone should be aware of the miscommunications between the world and their perception of it.

    1. You are trying to watch a youtubevideo and slow wifi-connection prevents this from happening. How can I turn this kind of hatred into loving kindness?
    2. My brother never cleans up after himself and I hate the fact that he does that. How can I turn this into loving kindness?

      Thank you for your question. The teachings on transforming negative emotions are a little more advanced. If you take Joy of Living 3, Awakening Wisdom, there is some additional information in there. Or you can read the book Joyful Wisdom.But a lot of this is taught in the Path of Liberation Buddhist teachings. You can find more information at learning.tergar.org.
      Best wishes,
