@@exoticsinafrica1789 unless you have XHP software it’s hard to know if there are adaptations programmed to dis-allow auto upshift. I have a bone stock ZF6HP21 in my E90/N54 MSport and it forces a 1-2 shift at WOT w/DSC and traction off, full manual mode. The over-rev may be allowed by software in XHP or it could be regional if you’re in EMEA (you appear to be). Either ProTools, XHP or a transmission pro can further explain well beyond my limited visibility on your cars conditions.
In Australia we have the 6HP in our Ford Falcons and it was a reasonably common problem where the transmission cooler failed internally, However I have never heard of a ZF gearbox failing without reason aside from the cooler. I would like to know more about the sound they make on their upshift, I gather its the brief unloading of the engine to allow for a safe/smooth shift saving the input shaft, But I would like to nerd out on more information about this and why it happens, and why you don't hear the same noise in other automatics, apart from DSGs - Which the ZF isn't.
What could cause rough shifting? I notice it most in the middle most used gears. From 4 > 5 > 6 and back. More noticeable with cold engine / transmission.

Hi there, my wife's 2015 x3 28d had a drive-train malfunction last Saturday. She came of the hwy and as she was turning right the car jerked twice and then lost power. She pulled over and shut it off. Waited 5 minutes and restarted it. Motor was fine but she could not select gears just stayed in park. Now it got towed to Kingston BMW and they diagnosed it as it needs a new transmission at 15k plus 2500 labour and taxes on top of that. Now the car has never showed any transmission problems until that day. I tried to find out from the service manager to see what part of the trans is faulty but he refused to tell me or they do not know what exactly the problem is. I also requested that he sends me the diag results which i just got today after complaining to BMW Canada about the situation. I suggested there must be another option because i do not have 20k to spend. I bought the car last year in January with 136k kms for 20k and in August the egr cooler caught on fire and the car was at Otto's BMW in Ottawa for the whole month of August. Which they had to replace the whole top-end of the motor because of the damage from the fire. Which BMW covered 100%. Now 8 months later the trans goes out. I kept on asking the service manager to see if there is another option like replacing the part that's faulty or rebuilding it. He just kept on saying the test says the trans have to be replaced with a new one. He also mentioned that they cannot code a used trans because i suggested that and he said they tried one last year and they could not code it so they had to put a new mechatronic unit at the customers expense which was 6k. As of today they still did not tell me what exactly is wrong with the transmission. So i finally got the diag results which is 11 pages. Not sure if any of you guys know how to read them. www.bimmerfest.com/threads/bmw-x3-drive-train-malfunction-impacted-ecm.1397545/#post-13547229 Any help would be great. I can post the PDF here or maybe reply to this comment if you would be able to help in finding out what could be the issue. I have worked on cars all my life built motors, turbos and worked mostly on manual trans but i have no idea on all the new electronics crap. I ended up towing the car back to the dealership where i bought the car which is not a BMW dealer and they said will have a look and see what they can do. I did buy a 3rd party warranty 48mos or 80k but there is a 3000 dollar claim limit. Cheers and thanks for your time Lester.
Hi, do you recommend replacing the pan with an aluminum one? It seems that the updated pan is aluminum, what are the benefits of replacing it to a more expensive aluminum pan?
Thanks for the video! I have noticed if I start my car F30 from cold, and set off within 10-15 seconds, the first up shift from 1-2 is pretty delayed and sounds like it’s slipping. If I idle for 30 seconds it does not do this. Otherwise the transmission operates normal. What do you think is the problem?
It’s completely normal. Mine does it too and I got my valve body completely overhauled + flushed with 11l of new oil. I heard this from a lot of people and it seems to be normal
I have the same situation on 2017 X5. The service adviser at BMW said it would be to hold gears 1-2 a little longer to warm up the cats a little faster to reduce emissions caused on cold start.
A question to Gareth and the Community: I had an appointment at a ZF service point to flush and change the transmission oil of my ZF 8HP45 after 85k km. My F20 is changing gears like a brand new car since then. However, when the transmission gets hot, it starts to smell quite badly via the air vents. This issues occured right after the oil change. After two weeks it is not gone yet, althoug it has improved slightly. The service staff double-checked the transmission. No leakages were found and no oil was outside the gear box. They told me, it is quite common that the F20 or F10 series from BMW tends to smell due to the fresh oil. It should stop smelling after a while. Have you experienced something similar so far? Thanks.
hi mate, i've found a lower leak (not near the input shaft) on my ZF8 only 27k miles on the clock. my garage will be changing the pan over but he also said it's extremely unusual for the ZF to leak at that mileage. Does it sound any more sinister than just a fan replacement and re seal ?
I just did a pan/filter replacement and fluid infill on my ram 8 speed. Started the engine and topped off the trans fluid while running. Drives and shifts fine, but now it wont go into park. Says “service transmission” ???
Check your fluids at the proper temperature for tranny I believe it’s 86-122. Get an oil sample and pay to get it examined for coolant leak in tranny. ..when checking tranny Don’t let it get past 110 bc it takes forever to cooldown good luck
If you’re out of warranty and you can’t check your transmission you should read up on how to do so. The reason I say that is because my 8HP 45re transmission Doesn’t have a dipstick so I have to do an additional step to get an accurate reading but if you have a warranty take that thing and don’t mess with it
I have 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee summit 3.6 v. and use the same transmission.since you are not carrying the transmission pan for the Jeep, what would I need to buy the parts number from your website? I am devoted customer of FCP.
You’ve actually got the Chrysler 845RE Torqueflight transmission which is a Chrysler built 8HP licensed to them by ZF. Only the diesel and V8 models get the genuine ZF transmissions. There will be minor differences between your transmission and what’s in this video.

Great video. I do have issue with my ZF8 and any advise would be much appreciated. When car is cold the gearbox is smooth but after 10-20min or when car reaches full temp the gearbox stating to play around little bit. Gears are changing not smoothly and under moderate acceleration shuddering can be felt between 1500rpm and 2000rpm. Shuddering is not strong but car is not accelerating smoothly and wonder if fluid and filter change is required? Anyone had issue like this? My car is F15 M50D
@@lenorolkos18 I’ve done ATF and filter change myself but this didn’t resolve issue btw. Most likely is tires. Learned now that when changing tires on xdrive all 4 needs changing no matter if let’s say rear ones are still good. It’s stupidly stupid invention that unfortunately requires us to spend unnecessarily extra $$$ otherwise if tires are not changed we risking transfer case problems or failure
Got my transmission fluid changed. BMW. Now when down shifting (to a point of 21 km/hr), it feels a slight jerk. Sometimes harder, sometimes barely perceptible. It could be low fluid?
so I have a 22 Jeep wrangler with the ZF 8speed. it's been having a weird issue where if I'm in low gear for a while (1st and 2nd), it'll occasionally whir or whine..sounding kind of like a cat screeching lol (sounds like spider gears when you reverse). Temp is fine, car is shifting fine. A few others been having the same issue on the forums, no one has an answer, even the dealers are puzzled. Could this be one of the quirks of ZF 8 speed transmission?
Yes my pan was upgraded to a ppe one with more capacity and fluid changed and now my trans has a whirring noise in lower gears as well in my Ram when you get up it a bit and it gets pretty loud too .I'm hoping the fluid level is just a bit low but if anybody has any Ideas I'd like to know.
I get that noise (a low whine) when coming to a stop, so consistent with lower gears. It's pretty much always been there, even after doing a pan and fluid change as part of regular maintenance. I suspect it is just a quirk.
Here is the thing , No mechanic have found my ZF tranny issues .. * It makes whining noise when pass 2,500 rpms "sound like a supercharger belt" *Some times loss torque just when change from 1st to 2d gear no always * Highway or city speed no issues * Fluid and pan was replaced at 100k miles * Problem starts with 115k miles *Filled with original Mopar fluid All mechanic says never heard that issue

Wish all videos were as well explained! I have a 2016 Audi Q7, 100k miles, oil never changed I think… every now and again only when down shifting I think around 3-2nd gear it kind of does it sharply… sort of a shunt if u get me… only does it now and again. Would a gearbox service sort this or is it more like a solenoid etc? Would greatly appreciate your input and u seem very well educated on this gearboxes!

Please can you help. I have an F25 X3 xdrive 20d here in the UK. I have noticed a slight delay in taking up drive when moving off from a standstill. It's as if the car is in neutral and as I apply pressure on the gas pedal I feel a very slight delay/lurch as it engages forward motion. Had a new Valve Body installed and the Jeep ran for about 40 miles but really HARD downshifting, poor mileage and higher tranny temp than usual... 220/230 as high as 240 within 10 minutes on highway? Then the Jeep went into LIMP mode. Took it home and now 2 days later check engine light gone and it's driving fine??? WTF? Last thing, do you recommend a TCM reset??? Thanks!

@@SteveWeltman thanks for reply, my car doesn't auto shift from 1st to second when im in sports plus mode or with DSC full off, with manual gear selection selected, instead it went into overrev and power cut, does that mean I have a problem with the engine or gearbox? Im perplexed as i bought the car used about a month ago?
@@exoticsinafrica1789 unless you have XHP software it’s hard to know if there are adaptations programmed to dis-allow auto upshift. I have a bone stock ZF6HP21 in my E90/N54 MSport and it forces a 1-2 shift at WOT w/DSC and traction off, full manual mode. The over-rev may be allowed by software in XHP or it could be regional if you’re in EMEA (you appear to be). Either ProTools, XHP or a transmission pro can further explain well beyond my limited visibility on your cars conditions.
Excellent video, very informative. Thank You!!!
3:43 recommends zf brand. 4:23 “really don’t want to use the zf branded”?🤔 I’m confused..
He said "really only wanna use the ZF pan"
In Australia we have the 6HP in our Ford Falcons and it was a reasonably common problem where the transmission cooler failed internally, However I have never heard of a ZF gearbox failing without reason aside from the cooler.
I would like to know more about the sound they make on their upshift, I gather its the brief unloading of the engine to allow for a safe/smooth shift saving the input shaft, But I would like to nerd out on more information about this and why it happens, and why you don't hear the same noise in other automatics, apart from DSGs - Which the ZF isn't.
BRO !!!!!! CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW TO REMOVE MECHATRONIC VALVE SLEEVE FROM 2011 F10 N55..... WHAT IS LOCKING THE PIECE IN??????????????????????????
Dam didn't know about the manual override to neutral. Very useful
Glad it was helpful!
To replace 7 or 11 litters by pumping out all qty?
Agree completely . Even though I ended up with a manual in my M235i, the ZF-8 is good enough that I considered it as an option... which is a first!
I wish I could of found a manual when I bought my car.
@@cameronrussell9362 it's "could have" not "could of "
what about the 8HP70? have you done any work on those?
What could cause rough shifting? I notice it most in the middle most used gears. From 4 > 5 > 6 and back. More noticeable with cold engine / transmission.
thumbs up - love these videos, keep pumping them out FCP!
Awesome video and technical insight ✅👌
207k on mine
Still going strong
Maintenance is the key!
Keep trying to avoid the mechanic, you will only pay more later, not a threat but a guarantee.
Great transmissio; 270k km still with the factory oil, no issues 👍
Nice.. What type of car? Might want to get a fluid / filter change done soon.
Getting my Q5 TDI done now at 180k.. Was factory. Curious to learn the state of it. Audi saying these were good for "life" but cheaper to service than full replace.
Have it in my ram and it's amazing. German engineering.
Great video! Is there a datasheet with the recommended service interval for every fluid, spark plugs etc in one place? If not could you compile one? :) I have a 435i xD with 30k miles and I would love to have pointers on what is next on the maintenance. Thanks!
See the car manual.
Thank you for the information!
Can you make a video about the transfer-case ? Btw i have the transmission in my bmw , and it can jerk between first and second gear especially when the gearbox is cold. The car has 100K miles and as far as i know has not had a transmission service . Is a transmission service advisable at this point ?
ps
Love the videos, keep up the good work
I always thought it was weird how the transmission kind of jerks on 1st & 2nd as well. 58k on mine
This could possibly just be that you’re low on transmission fluid.... I got liqui moly in mine after my trans was serviced. Bottle is about $7 from FCP
100k miles = 160000km. ZF recommend the oil and filter change every 80-120k km. So here it's your answer: do the service! And use ONLY the HP8 oil, not any dexron stuff.
@@AlessandroGenTLe I was planning on using liqui moly atf1800 , as it for the 8hp
@@thebmwfan Yes, that one is compatible as it has the 9.55550-AV5 certification. To be added to these: Petronas Tutela AS8 / ZF LifeGuard Fluid 8 (code: S671.090.312) / Vaico ATF 8HP V60-0264 or RAVENOL ATF 8HP Fluid
They are green, not red.
Evening guys, I have the 8hp 45 in my 2011 5 series yBMW. I’m suffering quite badly with a very sluggish gear box with hanging onto gears, getting nudges when down shifting esp from 2nd to 1st. I carried out an oil service with new pan and ZF lifeguard 8 oil approx 2 years ago and have since drained and refilled the box twice to try and flush with fresh fluid. The car feels really lazy and is weak to take up torque. It’s done 170k miles now. Any ideas? Thanks
Hey there, a shop claims that they have to drop the entire mechatronic to change that wire sleeve. Is that true? Is it easy to change it? Seems like mine is leaking
The pan I purchased to service my ZF8HP on a 2017 BMW X5 has the latest revision with the white transluscent filter casing. The pan is co-branded Hengst and ZF.
Where is the video of FCP Euro explaining the problems of the zf6hp?
Would to see fcp do a transmission swap video for the 328i
Will Sasso does transmissions !?
Excellent!
Once we saw him in Super Troopers 2 we knew we had to bring him in for DIY work.
Hi, really appreciate the video, is there a manual process of checking the oil temperature? Also how much oil does a 520d 8 speed tran takes.
get that heat shield cleared from drive shaft?
very thank you for this video
Hello, After I changed the fluid in 2018 q7, the car randomly does not want to go to park and give the P07BE00 Parking switch A/B correlation code. Went to the dealer they said the fluid might not be at the correct level and want 1k to redo the fluid. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated. The car run at 90C after 30-40 min which is in the normal temperature range....
I'm guessing the trans service would be the same for 2016 535i Auto ZF8?
My f30 328i xdrive has 76k miles should I consider servicing it
So the green sticker says lifetime oil, then tells you which oil and what temp to fill at? So it’s lifetime but if you do want to change…
Lifetime as in average lease/ warranty service time. Car manufacturers sell new cars not new transmissions. This one is extremely reliable when serviced semi regularly
Great Video. Thanks for sharing

Any help would be great.
Cheers and thanks for your time
Lester.
Any updates?
@@iPlayzz I don’t think it’s normal but I think he should get a fluid change just incase it hasn’t had one.
I have the same situation on 2017 X5. The service adviser at BMW said it would be to hold gears 1-2 a little longer to warm up the cats a little faster to reduce emissions caused on cold start.
Does a 19 ram rebel have a transmission thermostat? please add link for upgrade.
How can i get in contact with this guy to ask a question regarding my 8HP transmission?
A question to Gareth and the Community:
I had an appointment at a ZF service point to flush and change the transmission oil of my ZF 8HP45 after 85k km.
Thanks.
Yes , its OK
4:20 Did he say not to use a ZF branded pan?
hi mate, i've found a lower leak (not near the input shaft) on my ZF8 only 27k miles on the clock. my garage will be changing the pan over but he also said it's extremely unusual for the ZF to leak at that mileage. Does it sound any more sinister than just a fan replacement and re seal ?
What about when swapping a 8 speed transmission with a used one. Is there anyway around the coding?
I just did a pan/filter replacement and fluid infill on my ram 8 speed. Started the engine and topped off the trans fluid while running. Drives and shifts fine, but now it wont go into park. Says “service transmission”
???
I have a “transmission is too hot warning sign” when push hard on highway. Where should I be looking for this issue?
Check your fluids at the proper temperature for tranny I believe it’s 86-122. Get an oil sample and pay to get it examined for coolant leak in tranny. ..when checking tranny Don’t let it get past 110 bc it takes forever to cooldown good luck
I got similar issue too on my F25. did you sort it?
If you’re out of warranty and you can’t check your transmission you should read up on how to do so. The reason I say that is because my 8HP 45re transmission Doesn’t have a dipstick so I have to do an additional step to get an accurate reading but if you have a warranty take that thing and don’t mess with it
Is this the same transmission that's in an Iveco Daily ?
Puting the original TCM from the car in a second hand transmission could work?
How many quarts of ZF oil should i put in the oil pan when i do an oil change on this automatic transmission ??? Thanks
Where can i find the speed sensor? Ram 1500 2wd
Great content. Do you recommend doing the mechatronic & Can bus seals at the same time?
I have 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee summit 3.6 v. and use the same transmission.since you are not carrying the transmission pan for the Jeep, what would I need to buy the parts number from your website? I am devoted customer of FCP.
You’ve actually got the Chrysler 845RE Torqueflight transmission which is a Chrysler built 8HP licensed to them by ZF. Only the diesel and V8 models get the genuine ZF transmissions. There will be minor differences between your transmission and what’s in this video.
@@Killian665 Thank you. Do you not sell it for Jeep then?
I'm at 293k miles 2015 chrysler should I change my fluid?? I know it's super high mileage prolly the highest in the country.. shifts smoothly no issues
I got exact same issue, don't know the solution yet
@@lenorolkos18 is you car 4x4 or xdrive etc? did you recently change tires?
@@lenorolkos18 I’ve done ATF and filter change myself but this didn’t resolve issue btw. Most likely is tires. Quattro and Xdrive are very sensitive and allow only 1% tire difference between front and back. Haven’t changed mine yet but my started “shaking” when I’ve changed front tires and kept rear ones as they were good.
Hi,can I ask you an advice?on a 100 miles no maintenance gearbox should I flush process or only ordinare oil change? Thanks!!!!
Legendary Germany Powered. ZF series automatic tranmissions!
so I have a 22 Jeep wrangler with the ZF 8speed. it's been having a weird issue where if I'm in low gear for a while (1st and 2nd), it'll occasionally whir or whine..sounding kind of like a cat screeching lol (sounds like spider gears when you reverse).
@@alanglinster4455 Yeah hopefully this is just a quirk of the ZF transmission...
I get that noise (a low whine) when coming to a stop, so consistent with lower gears. It's pretty much always been there, even after doing a pan and fluid change as part of regular maintenance. I suspect it is just a quirk.
Audi BiTDI has this gearbox but mechanic release. There is no screw on the side of the gearbox under the car. Any idea how to release it?
I own a 2007 Bmw 335xi and recently have a problem with the reverse gear ⚙️. What should I do
Here is the thing , No mechanic have found my ZF tranny issues ..
* It makes whining noise when pass 2,500 rpms "sound like a supercharger belt"
*Some times loss torque just when change from 1st to 2d gear no always
* Highway or city speed no issues
* Fluid and pan was replaced at 100k miles
* Problem starts with 115k miles
*Filled with original Mopar fluid
All mechanic says never heard that issue
Thank you for the knowledge,
I'm using F30 ActiveHybrid 3 using GA8P70H there is an electric oil pump
which the diag Code showing up I guess it's broken. I try to find the part but I couldn't find it.
Any suggestion ?
Wish all videos were as well explained! I have a 2016 Audi Q7, 100k miles, oil never changed I think… every now and again only when down shifting I think around 3-2nd gear it kind of does it sharply… sort of a shunt if u get me… only does it now and again. Would a gearbox service sort this or is it more like a solenoid etc? Would greatly appreciate your input and u seem very well educated on this gearboxes!
Hi Gareth, thanks for the video from the UK, its been about 45 years since I stripped an engine and gearbox. ZF transmission is unbelievable in my Alfa Stelvio. Only slight issue is in auto it sometimes won't shift up in the normal rev range from a standing start until I paddle/Stick Any ideas?

Yes!
Other than that my car changes gears absolutely perfectly in automatic and manual mode, even using the paddles. This is not every single pull away, and I need to be aware if it is when the vehicle is cold or fully warmed up but as you are so knowledgeable I thought you might be able to shed some light on it. Thanks in advance.
GREAT Video!!! Do you know what causes the "Service Shifter" message? Mine was on for years without any problems but one day my 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee just stopped moving. The PRNDL on the dash flashes and the Jeep just stays in neutral even though the shifter and dash says Drive? Had a new Valve Body installed and the Jeep ran for about 40 miles but really HARD downshifting, poor mileage and higher tranny temp than usual... 220/230 as high as 240 within 10 minutes on highway? Then the Jeep went into LIMP mode. Took it home and now 2 days later check engine light gone and it's driving fine??? WTF? Last thing, do you recommend a TCM reset??? Thanks!
2013 F30, 220k km, no any problem with trans. Wanna another 10 years and 200k km, change pan/fluid now or not? what's the worst situation if change? any suggestions?
This transmission is better than DSG?
I used your video from the X5 8HP service to do the fluid and filter change on my 228i xDrive - messy without a lift but it was a surprisingly straightforward job. Your complete kit was exactly what I needed - I just wish the ZF Lifeguard fluid wasn't so costly. Have you & others had good luck with the Liqui Moly Top Tech 1800 fluid instead?
No - use chevron fully synthetic multi-vehicle ATF which meets / exceeds the spec for the OEM fluid at 1/4 the price !
@@patrickdunn6701 it doesnt. multi vehicle atf meets requirements for more common automatic transmissions like ford’s mercon lv. do not put that in ur zf8. lifeguard 8 is not like normal atf and has different viscocity at different temp points

Hey there. Coming in late, but I have a question with a Charger 8HP. Could oil getting into the electric connector cause an issue like a gear change hanging? Meaning it feels like it goes into neutral for a second before going into the next gear. I've been coming across that lately and Dodge doesn't seem to be fixing it. Thanks
