  • ►The ZF 8-Speed transmission, known as the 8HP45, is a revolutionary automatic transmission. While we show it commonly in many different BMWs such as this F30, the ZF 8HP can be found in vehicles from over 21 different manufacturers worldwide. In this guide, Gareth Foley, FCP Euro's BMW Catalog Manager, covers:
    ZF 8-Speed Applications & Manufacturers
    ZF 8-Speed Service Intervals
    ZF 8-Speed Component Overview
ZF 8-Speed Common Problems & Leaks
Two major ZF 8HP topics that Gareth also touches on are servicing the transmission even though it's "lifetime fill" according to the manufacturers and how to access the neutral safety switch. To learn more about each, visit the links below.

Not at all. So for example lets see how good it is after a running time from 500.000 Miles compared to an realy good Transmission like the World best Japanese AISIN Transmissions. For example i owned also a AISIN 5speed Transmission with 4 Overdrive Gears and it runs, shifting like a pure dream fast, very direct absolutely without shiftlegs. And without any oil changing after 6 Years lifetime. Also Hyundai Transmissions are in the Average decent too, but my 5speed of course not that good as my 5speed AISIN in the drive feeling BUT in the quality my Hyundai Transmission is very reliable and very strong. But i guaranteeing no ZF Transmission will by far not gets the same lifetime like a AISIN there is no Arguing that. With a equal, same maintenance no ZF can mess in lifetime with a AISIN. It starts already with that primitive Plastik pan, ground cover on the ZF 8speed As far i know AISIN doesn't use such a plastic crap for example for the oil pan part. But if such a plastic sh... will may eveen come on ASINS i be sure, than are the Plastik parts from the European, German Manufacturers way way more trashi, crappie than Japanese ones are. This is, what it shows in the history allways in that way. So i don't expecting already here a long lifetime and a maintain less payable lifetime from those ZF crap. Thats normally the way, how it is.
      Regards Jay

Definitely agree that this tranny is a keeper.
I'm a 20 years experienced tech and I have one in my 2013 ram 1500. Not one problem with the trans since buying the truck brand new. I've done one full service, changed the pan/filter with mopar and amsoil ATF spec'd for it at around 75k km, and just drained and filled it every 75k km since. At around 225k km now and it drives like it did on day one. I'll be doing another full service soon with a new pan/filter.
Nothing required other than the regular maintenance, not even so much as a leak.

I agree the ZF 8-speed is a fantastic transmission, very quick and smooth gearchanges. It was a bit confusing in the beginning where you first very clearly recommend the original ZF filter unit and then later, underneath the car it sounds as if you say you don’t recommend it «because it’s made by Philtrans»…, which is correct? I can buy a kit from ZF or Meyle, where Meyle is actually a bit more expensive. Meyle is a reputable manufacturer, although ZF seems the better choice as the original manufacturer.
Also, is there a similar instruction video on actually changing the transmission oil?

We had a 2016 X3 3.5i that went through 2 of these in a month because they would not stop leaking from everywhere. Like they were building up pressure internally or something. Luckily it was all dealer warranty work. Ended up getting rid of it for a Grand Cherokee 5.7 with the same trans and haven’t had any problems with it this time around.

Thanks great video. From ZF service manual:
ZF 5-, 6-, 8- and 9-speed as well as the ZF 4HP20 automatic transmissions are filled maintenance-free with specially developed
semi-synthetic ATF oils. However, due to the many factors influencing the service life of transmissions in individual operation, ZF
recommends an oil change after 150,000 km for its transmissions. In operating conditions with high temperatures and loads, or
with unknown vehicle use in the past, it can make sense to change the transmission oil at shorter intervals.
In each case, only released ATF oil may be used for oil changes. And oil changes must be performed in accordance with the
relevant specifications. The exception is the ZF 5HP18 automatic transmission which must be filled differently depending

In Australia we have the 6HP in our Ford Falcons and it was a reasonably common problem where the transmission cooler failed internally, However I have never heard of a ZF gearbox failing without reason aside from the cooler.
I would like to know more about the sound they make on their upshift, I gather its the brief unloading of the engine to allow for a safe/smooth shift saving the input shaft, But I would like to nerd out on more information about this and why it happens, and why you don't hear the same noise in other automatics, apart from DSGs - Which the ZF isn't.

Great video - thanks... Maybe you can guide me here.. Over the past weeks I have discovered problems with the transmission... Worse when the temperature is below freezing... gets better when the engine is hot and even better shen the weather temp gets higher... Difficult to set into Reverse - have to put it into Drive mode first and then Reverse... When I start drive the rpm goes higher before shifting, and 40 miles an hour with 3000 rpm, does not get the transmission to shift... It's like only the first 3 or 4 gears are being used... Manual gear is not possible...
One day is totally crazy - the next day it runs without any issues...
Yesterday the oil level was checked and was ok - the oil was dark but not black.. not clear... The car has just turned 100 K miles..
I drove the car to a workshop specializing in automatic transmissions, and they said worst case scenario is a new transmission.... My car is a BMW F31 from 2017 - well seems like a huge expense on a relatively new car..
Any comments/ideas :-) and happy new year to all...

Hey, thanks for the video. A quick question for you: I've seen also the fluid change video (thanks for that) and my question is: by replacing the oil in that way (gravity only) we are barely changing only half of it (torque converter and cooling radiator don't release their oil). Is it still ok to have half new oil and half old? Is it better to use one of those machines that does the full oil replacement?
I ask as I can do the "gravity flow" oil change by myself (I've the PC to check the temperature for level verification) but surely not the full replacement.

Hey there. Coming in late, but I have a question with a Charger 8HP. Could oil getting into the electric connector cause an issue like a gear change hanging? Meaning it feels like it goes into neutral for a second before going into the next gear. I've been coming across that lately and Dodge doesn't seem to be fixing it. Thanks

What do you think about using the oem ZF 8HP90 for drag racing? Mine in my Hellcat was ruined by bad tuning I believe and I need to replace it. I’m either gonna go with a new oem or have one “built” by d&b in Memphis.

Enjoyed the video very much. Have a 2020 M340i and had a question on transmission fluid. I heard from some mechanics that say if you change the transmission fluid it can impact the way the clutch plates interact (i think they called them that). Something about how over time particles get in the fluid and then when you change it, there is more space between the plates. Is this true? if ZF says 50K miles, then it seems to me it should not be an issue to flush and replace the transmission fluid. Thanks!

    • @felixramos5808
      @felixramos5808 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Late reply but I think that applies for transmissions that have high mileage that fluid has never been changed. By then the fluid has broken down and the transmission is used to the thickness of it. Changing it could cause problems but not if it’s regularly changed

In the end, what is the use, if the gearbox lasts 300,000 km/200,000 miles longer than the engine that would need God's help to last 500,000 km/350,000 miles.

I have BMW 520d ZF 8 HP 45. The solenoids had Changed six months ago with the new original parts and the shiftings are now almost good. But when the car gets the second gear and then Just when I take off my foot from the gas pedal, after I take it off , the car shots to the front like I brake it. After the shifting if I continue to the gas 2-3 seconds and then getting the gas off, not just cutting off the gas after the shifting it doesnt do that. the revolution counter shakes a little But it does it when the car is hot, when I drive the car about 30 minutes. Thanks. What can it be. The turbine is new.

Thanks for the video! I have noticed if I start my car F30 from cold, and set off within 10-15 seconds, the first up shift from 1-2 is pretty delayed and sounds like it’s slipping. If I idle for 30 seconds it does not do this. Otherwise the transmission operates normal. What do you think is the problem?

Hello, After I changed the fluid in 2018 q7, the car randomly does not want to go to park and give the P07BE00 Parking switch A/B correlation code. Went to the dealer they said the fluid might not be at the correct level and want 1k to redo the fluid. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated. so I have a 22 Jeep wrangler with the ZF 8speed. it's been having a weird issue where if I'm in low gear for a while (1st and 2nd), it'll occasionally whir or whine..sounding kind of like a cat screeching lol (sounds like spider gears when you reverse). Temp is fine, car is shifting fine. A few others been having the same issue on the forums, no one has an answer, even the dealers are puzzled. Could this be one of the quirks of ZF 8 speed transmission?

I have a 2.0 gasoline 280hp Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the shifting between 1st and second does not feel totally smooth, you can feel a slight thump, as if a clutch was slipping and then engaging more firmly, before a shift is completed. Could this be related to the need of an oil change, or can it be any other issue? It's barely noticeable, only from the driver. I honestly don't think it's normal. Car has 75.000km. Thanks!

A question to Gareth and the Community:
I had an appointment at a ZF service point to flush and change the transmission oil of my ZF 8HP45 after 85k km. My F20 is changing gears like a brand new car since then. However, when the transmission gets hot, it starts to smell quite badly via the air vents. This issues occured right after the oil change. After two weeks it is not gone yet, althoug it has improved slightly. The service staff double-checked the transmission. No leakages were found and no oil was outside the gear box. They told me, it is quite common that the F20 or F10 series from BMW tends to smell due to the fresh oil. It should stop smelling after a while.
Have you experienced something similar so far?
    Thanks.
