The garage that's doing the work quoted me £350 for the kit alone so there's a £90-£100 markup on the kit depending on the price they buy it for. They're fitting it for £120 incl VAT.
I litrerally did mine about two weeks ago. Got all ZF kit with all the lifeguard oil. Comes with bolts and new sleeve. And genuine Bmw/zf adaptor and tubes. P.s if you have the car higher at the front while you dismantle then you can drain all fluid from the torque converter so to drain 90% of old oil and then put car level for filling. I used the obd scan tool to check oil temps where 40degrees. Yes most fill plugs are that tight my friend! Lol

SO Now i dont know whats in there ,left. are you saying if i now jack car up from front all the oil and remaining oil will come out ? leaving probly 1 to 2 litres thats trapped in variouse places ?
This is the most accurate and best descriptive video on this transmission I’ve seen yet George ! Thank you … also how can I get ista for free? I’m in the us .
Thanks for making this. I wish you had shown the valve body screw tightening sequence, or at least said where you found it or what you were referencing. The pan sequence you explained. I have an '07 750Li I bought not long ago and it's my first BMW. It's actually the first car (sedan) I've owned since my '71 VW Karmann Ghia in '95. I'm jealous of your V12. There aren't many here in the U.S. Oh well, I would probably be afraid to buy one if I found it, I'm already facing the alternator bracket gasket, this trans service, and I'm pretty sure the Guibo joint. Might as well change the support bearing while I'm doing the Guibo. Now that you've shown how much fluid it takes, I think when I do mine I will buy 8 feet of plastic tubing and stand beside the car, using a small funnel to pour in the tube, and let gravity do its thing. I'll blow the last little bit in, to empty the tube.
Very good, thank you. Just the little bit of extra info I needed. I have a Jaguar S-Type 2004 (same 6hp24), and without driving it since I made the first ATF change a couple of month ago, I am currently on my 3rd ATF change... Reason: After the first full flush I had to be taught that I cannot use a multi-vehicle ATF, which claims to be like Lifeguard 6, thus another full flush flush, putting Lifeguard 6 in, (and I already changed the sleeve) and then I learned that those bridge seals like to break. I do not think, mine is broken, but I don't want to risk that it breaks soon...: Thus: ATF change No.3 to swap the bridge seal and those 4 tubes. Obviously, I will reuse the just released Lifeguard 6.
Have done this procedure twice on my E61 525d already, 3'rd time coming up this summer. But only did the sleeves, seal and plug connector on one occasion. Probably one of the most important service procedures next to changing engine oil that you can perform on your car, if you plan to have it last for long. Mine has gone more than 225.000 miles by now.
Open the vent on the container to avoid the bubbling. Before dropping pan, loosen 2 near drain plug, tilt pan toward plug, then remove plug. Should be able to drain more fluid that way.
Yes, tried this, but I took this idea farther, because as described, additional is only a small volume of fluid (when I created tilt by only slightly loosened the one remaining bolt at the end opposite from the plug, then loosened more the one remaining bolt at the end near the plug.) From there, with the plug out, I supported the pan with one hand, while I removed those two last bolts, and did a controlled pour, through the open plug hole, by tilting the pan over my catch tray, and managed to get a significant amount of fluid out, not all fluid, but much closer to empty. I feel that this was easier than wrangling the pan with more fluid in it.
Well done mate I'm gonna do my zf8 soon got the new pan gonna buy the oil soon and throw on my neighbours ramp at his garage my spine is knackered so I can't be crawling on the floor hope mine goes as smoothly as yours👍
Very useful and detailed video - have the ZF8 box for my BMW F07 and wanted to change the gearbox oil (only). Very similar set-up as regards draining & filling, and running engine to temperature as shown on this video. +++++ .
Nice work. I thought I read somewhere the solenoids were prone to failing, or some of them. Did you consider replacing or having them tested or rebuilt? Also there are some "advanced" upgrades inside the valve body, to fix known issues, did you consider those?
What a great informative video, I have a great respect for your efforts in showing this not so easy task under difficult conditions ie room to work and ambient conditions.
Probably covered but don’t see a comment about the fluid. It’s not an oil. Does draining the transmission also drain the torque converter of fluid also? If no, how much would you guesstimate is left in there before refilling. 👍✌️🇬🇧
Awesome video again George, many thanks. would you advise a Zf6 gearbox service in a 2010 330d with 170k miles, and no known history of any gearbox service previously. Or leave it well alone, as currently its showing no issues?
Nice one George, I will be doing the exact procedure on my E60 535d on ramps and axle stand's on my drive. Your 'no b-s' straight forward video shows how easy this can be compared to a sponsored garage video which made it look like a tw*t of a job. Will definitely be looking to source the parts from your link also 👍
Is your dad Carl Froch ? (the former professional boxer). Seriously, you look so much like a younger version. Thanks for the video, very handy and informative, my auto M140i is only on 22k but I plan on having the ZF8 serviced at 50k.
Another great vid george 🤘 I recently did gearbox service on my f31 n47. Kit came with 7 litres of oil which is the capacity of the gearbox. I only filled it with about 5 litres following the zf procedure. I'm assuming the rest of the oil is in the torque converter. How much is the capacity of your gearbox and how many litres did you fill with? Cheers 👍
Good job! But this isn’t actually a full gearbox oil change, it’s partial change. For the full oil change there is a special device. You’ve done about 90% change.
Great job George, very well conducted as well BUT I would never recommend doing it on the open space (how windy it was on that day?). You don't want any dirt to get inside the gearbox, around mechatronic. Also @BUTAJIUK is absolutely right - you have only refreshed an oil - still around 3-4 Ltrs of old oil have been mixed with your new oil :( How would you feel leaving 30% of old oil in your engine? DYNAMIC oil change with the specialist machine is the only way of replacing complete "full" oil in the automatic gearboxes. Saying that - George your skills are great and your video is very good indeed.
Great video, my car range rover 2006 ZF transmission. The D automatic drive stuck at 3rd gear, but the standard S is working fine. I can shift all the gear to run the car. If I do not replace the rubber tube as this video, will the standard shift will stop working when the rubber tube getting worst?
How can you tell when the solenoids should be replaced? Would it generally trigger a code or is it something that should be done after a certain amount of miles? I have the XHP transmission flash, (stage 3)and has ran rather well with only periodic aggressive driving. I’m going to be doing a flush and replacing fluid/filter soon and curious if I should be purchasing new solenoids. I have noticed a bit of hesitation in shifting, as of late and not sure if performing the flush will take care of it or not. Thanks in advance if you have any advice!
If you have the ZF 8 Speed transmission, we also stock those parts. If you want to be sure, please do provide us with your registration and we can help you!
@ yes, it is exactly the same procedure, only using ZF8 oil. I'm nearly secure that the oil filter fan is the same. Ony difference is that the ZF8 does not have mectronic sleaves as in the zf6 gearbox so in fact it it easier to go.
Great job buddy!! Quick question how long did it take for the gear box temp reach 40 degrees c? I don’t have the computer kit so I’m try to guesstimate the temperature
Super work George, the detail you provide is spot on and very helpful for when us DIYers would be tackling some of the same scenarios. Did all the seals/gaskets also come with the kit from GearboxOils or are they additional ? The parts are not explicitly listed as part of the kit so just wondering. Once again, quality content, thanks for sharing.
Was there any malfunctions in the transmission or any problems that could have been caused by that broken adapter seal or was everything working normally before servicing the transmission?
George, started watching your videos and I'm really getting hooked as I own an older 530 diesel individual. Mines also auto and runs very well at 160k and in fact glides lovely. My question is if its not broken is it worth doing ... seems like a big DIY job.
When I done my bmw 530d I put an extra 0.5 litre of oil in the automatic box. On the ZF service manual it says there is a vent on top of the gearbox 👍 better more than less
@@GeorgeAusters I found after the oil and filter change. It was holding on to the gears and the changes were terrible but it fixed itself after 30 miles of driving. I’ve had no more problems and it’s cover 35k miles since the oil/filter. 🥴
Thinking more about this, I am concerned about getting the plug adapter re-installed. If you loosened the exhaust pipe, would that create more room to maneuver?
I'm missing one thing in this process and in the comments. I would like to know the adaptation values you can measure before the oil change. To this I would like to see the age and mileage of the car. Now i have an X3/F25 30d 2011, 251,000 km, and some of the adaptation values indicate some leakage in the gearbox. I have googled quite a lot, but I can't find an answer if the mechatronic should be repaired or not, or can I drive another 50,000 km, that means are the values too high or not.
I watched a video about oil cooler for Zf gearbox means that oil level may still be too low and needs checking again when car is much warmer??? Means that oil level may still be low after adding it twice
do you know if this is the same procedure with slave seals for the ZF 8 speed? also do you not need to reset limit counter on this one via scan tool? (In volvos you have to although thats an aisin transmission)
George i changed the sump pan, bolts and fluid on my 2005 E60 and few years ago, i lost my nerve on changing that screw in plastic mechatronic part, and i wasnt touching those other bolts to drop everything. But was happy to put what i did vack together !! Can you confirm for my X5, 2006, 3lit diesel that i can use the same atf 2, or zf6hp26z compatible fluid ,?

I really need your professional help please, my 730D E65, the gear indicator is flashing, and I've got a transmission fault, drive moderately. If I service the gearbox would this help at all? Thanks
"This is my first time doing this" then says "you have to go genuine/oe parts, trust me". Sorry sir, but on what kind of basis do I trust a man who has not done the job befare, then says trust me, like you have experience ? (I’m joking) Great video!
I'm curious - if you went in this far, why not replace the servos too? Not that much more compared to the labor getting tomthis point, and I understand they are easy tomdo and age like all the other serviced parts....
Hi, on an 8speed ZF transmission, they recommend 60.000 mile flued change, but what about age if the car has only covered 40.000 miles and is 7years old
Do we need the ista and the computer part to finish this job? Or can we just turn on the car and guesstimate the temperature, then finish the filling process?
Hello George. Could you give us some advice how to install the mechatronic plug sleeve? It is now shown completely in your video. Is there a technical note how to do this? Can I find it somewhere?

Seriously, you look so much like a younger version.
Thanks for the video, very handy and informative, my auto M140i is only on 22k but I plan on having the ZF8 serviced at 50k.
I wish you are somewhere near to me. I like your work , my BMW's ZF needs service...
If you need parts, we can absolutely help!
Another great vid george 🤘
I recently did gearbox service on my f31 n47. Kit came with 7 litres of oil which is the capacity of the gearbox. I only filled it with about 5 litres following the zf procedure. I'm assuming the rest of the oil is in the torque converter. How much is the capacity of your gearbox and how many litres did you fill with? Cheers 👍
Around 10L in mine.. I put int just short of 7
@@GeorgeAusters Cheers George, similar in and out ratio to mine then. Thanks mate
Awesome work! That was some difficult work that you made it look easy.
Thanks a lot!
Hello
Isn't that Hyundai's oil?
Smashed it keep up the work rate mate
Thanks mate🙏🏼
Was there any reason you did not change the soleniod valves ? What was the coil resistance measurements ?
When topping off fluid for the 2nd time you do it with the engine running correct?
Good job! But this isn’t actually a full gearbox oil change, it’s partial change. For the full oil change there is a special device. You’ve done about 90% change.
Of course, there is fluid in the torque converter still. The entire system holds around 10 litres but you get 7 litres with the kit to do this service
@@GeorgeAusters yes, I mean you named the video “full service”
@@BUTAJIUK It is a full service meaning doing all the seals etc. I never said I was draining 100% of the oil👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters OK. Really good job!👍🏻
Good job George, should be much better now
Yep, can’t wait to get it on the road and take it for a rip!
I got the ZF8 in my 120d so it's just a filter and oil change for that I guess?
If you have the ZF 8 Speed transmission, we also stock those parts.
If you want to be sure, please do provide us with your registration and we can help you!
🙌🏼
@ yes, it is exactly the same procedure, only using ZF8 oil. I'm nearly secure that the oil filter fan is the same. Ony difference is that the ZF8 does not have mectronic sleaves as in the zf6 gearbox so in fact it it easier to go.
Great job buddy!! Quick question how long did it take for the gear box temp reach 40 degrees c? I don’t have the computer kit so I’m try to guesstimate the temperature
Not long at all!
Did you notice any difference driving wise after servicing it thanks 🙏
Yes smoother
Great job George, how long did this take? and what are the risks of filling the oil up without the car being level? cheers.
Hard to say how long it took as it takes much longer when recording. If the car isn’t level then you won’t get the correct filling amount
Too much oil causes oil to froth and air bubbles stop proper lubrication and too little oil. Well. Will cause parts to wear prematurely as well.
@@GeorgeAusters Thanks for the reply George, great job on that gearbox btw.
Great vid George that's another job to do on my e61
Glad to hear!
We're happy to help if you need parts for your e61!
Need to do this on my E61 520d as well.. must look into a service kit and have a go at this :)
was prob shifting like shit before it was done in 2017 - the oil will be fully clean now its been done twice
Yeah that was possibly it’s first ever service at around 95k-100k
Super work George, the detail you provide is spot on and very helpful for when us DIYers would be tackling some of the same scenarios. Did all the seals/gaskets also come with the kit from GearboxOils or are they additional ? The parts are not explicitly listed as part of the kit so just wondering. Once again, quality content, thanks for sharing.
After checking the link you provided, the additional sleeve, adapters and seals are provided. Will certainly be checking GearboxOils out further.
Cheers Padraic, means a lot mate!
@@padraicgarvey9902 Thank you! If you ever need help, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to help
Some kit comes with a oil, screws, filter pun and that plastic plug fram only
supirsed that nobody said that the torque for screws are "8 plus minus 0.8Nm" NOT "8+0.8 = 8.8Nm"
Was there any malfunctions in the transmission or any problems that could have been caused by that broken adapter seal or was everything working normally before servicing the transmission?
I never got to drive the car much before doing this service but I didn’t noticed any faults with it
George, started watching your videos and I'm really getting hooked as I own an older 530 diesel individual. Mines also auto and runs very well at 160k and in fact glides lovely. My question is if its not broken is it worth doing ... seems like a big DIY job.
I have my shifter lever in the slot where it is suppose to go but now my car starts but won’t shift out of park
The real question is how did you get those jacks into position when that’s the spot to lift with a floorjack?? 🤔
You use the front and rear jacking points
@@GeorgeAusters so I raise in the front and put jacks on other side in the front?
Great and well detailed video.
Would the process be the same for an N52.
PS: New Sub
Yes exact same!
When I done my bmw 530d I put an extra 0.5 litre of oil in the automatic box. On the ZF service manual it says there is a vent on top of the gearbox 👍 better more than less
Really you want just the right amount as too much oil can cause overheating issues
@@GeorgeAusters I found after the oil and filter change. It was holding on to the gears and the changes were terrible but it fixed itself after 30 miles of driving. I’ve had no more problems and it’s cover 35k miles since the oil/filter. 🥴
Where are you based please
Excellent performance, very professional video! 👏👏💯
Thanks👍🏻
What a faff doing it the ground I bought a 2 post ramp best thing I ever did
Yep the plan is to build a garage and buy a ramp when I get my own house.. How tall is your garage?
Thinking more about this, I am concerned about getting the plug adapter re-installed. If you loosened the exhaust pipe, would that create more room to maneuver?
Possibly
Best video to date 👊🏻👍🏻
Cheers mate👌🏼
I'm missing one thing in this process and in the comments.
I would like to know the adaptation values you can measure before the oil change. To this I would like to see the age and mileage of the car.
Now i have an X3/F25 30d 2011, 251,000 km, and some of the adaptation values indicate some leakage in the gearbox. I have googled quite a lot, but I can't find an answer if the mechatronic should be repaired or not, or can I drive another 50,000 km, that means are the values too high or not.
One of the best vids so far.
Cheers Stu!
Hey, do happen to know where the output shaft speed sensor is located on this transmission?
Nice one George. I've been dreading doing mine but you made it look relatively easy! PEACE
Yeah the most important thing is giving yourself as much space as possible👍🏻
To help make things easier, we can confirm what parts your gearbox needs. Let us know if you need any help!
Hey Mate,
Thanks for the video. Where do you get ISTA+ ?
I watched a video about oil cooler for Zf gearbox means that oil level may still be too low and needs checking again when car is much warmer??? Means that oil level may still be low after adding it twice
do you know if this is the same procedure with slave seals for the ZF 8 speed? also do you not need to reset limit counter on this one via scan tool? (In volvos you have to although thats an aisin transmission)
Perfect job George 👏
Thanks bro🙌🏼
George whoth is working temperature, fluid in girbox?
Haven't checked to be honest.. Likely similar to coolant / oil temps
Thanks George 👍
George i changed the sump pan, bolts and fluid on my 2005 E60 and few years ago, i lost my nerve on changing that screw in plastic mechatronic part, and i wasnt touching those other bolts to drop everything. But was happy to put what i did vack together !!
Can you confirm for my X5, 2006, 3lit diesel that i can use the same atf 2, or zf6hp26z compatible fluid ,?
Does this help the car not shift so hard?
I’ve tried this it’s brilliant but I’m having a issue that my car is only taking 5 litres max why is that
Is it running and upto temp? And did you remove the valve body?
Hi I’ve just done a gearbox oil change on my n47 since then I’ve had juttering in high gears and low revs and can see it going up and down on the revs and also feel it…. but is sport with high revs drives fine and changes gears fine in manual any advice
(I’m joking)
Great video!
I'm curious - if you went in this far, why not replace the servos too? Not that much more compared to the labor getting tomthis point, and I understand they are easy tomdo and age like all the other serviced parts....
Do you mean the solenoids?
Hi, on an 8speed ZF transmission, they recommend 60.000 mile flued change, but what about age if the car has only covered 40.000 miles and is 7years old
Wouldn’t hurt to do it now👍🏻
Do we need the ista and the computer part to finish this job? Or can we just turn on the car and guesstimate the temperature, then finish the filling process?
You can’t just guess the temperature
Hello George. Could you give us some advice how to install the mechatronic plug sleeve? It is now shown completely in your video. Is there a technical note how to do this? Can I find it somewhere?
I did explain in the video, you basically need to push it and then lever something against it to fully seat it home
Great video!! Would my 08 520d be any different?
Very similar
If you need to know, you can contact us with your registration and we can let you know if it has the same transmission!
GUYS NEED HELP!!! I have a 2005 e90 320i SE 6 Speed Automatic with 78000 miles on the clock, still a baby but has now started to have jerky acceleration, and jerky gear changing.
