    Doc, you're blessed man. With brains. With training. With a gorgeous wife. A beautiful baby. A fulfilling career. And here you are, sharing your knowledge freely (an no doubt taking some heat for it). That is so cool and gracious of you. Many of us aren't getting the help/ info we need from our own docs, or just wish to study up, and we can do it here without buying a load of books.

    Before CV, I worked in assisted living, serving meals. The residents who had significant signs of Alzheimer's were the ones who ate lots of sugars and carbohydrates: lots of desserts, sodas, fruit juices, breads, cereals, etc. I watched those same people go downhill quickly, until they had to be moved to the "memory care" unit, where they eventually died. It's very disturbing to see what they go through.

    I was diagnosed with Pseudotumor Cerebri many years ago. It’s now call IIH. I cut sugar and began a low carb diet over a year ago when memory became so bad that I worried I had early onset Alzheimer’s. My quality of life is leaps and bounds better. My memory is like it was when I was younger and I lost weight as well. To me, sugar is poison.

    I hear you Dr C. My mom was diagnosed at age 68 she is 76 now and fully dementa. My dad is 81 and got told he had MCI at age 77. It was too late for me to help my mom but I have tried and tried to help my dad. He and his wife only listen to their MD's and other family members who preach eat less move more, low fat less meat. It is breaking my heart.
    Alzheimer's, high BP, diabetes, obesity run in my family. I listened to my wake up call 4 years ago at age 49 when my BP and sugar were up. I am fit lean and very active, yet my diet was the SAD and was clearlt telling me to mine my genetics. Keto low carb for the WIN. I'm doing all I can to prevent chronic disease. Thanks for speaking on something that is not in your "wheel house" and giving us your opinion. YOU ROCK

    My mother had Alzheimer’s Disease for 10 years. She had it in early 60’s. I’m in my late 50’s. She was the only one ever to have it in our entire family. It also scares me more than anything.

      My mom has it as well. And it scares me too. I've lost 30 pounds through Keto and really hope that this change will at least put it off till I'm much older. I'm so sorry about your mom.

      My mom does too, looked at her Rx side effects and three pills cause cognitive decline. One of which is a statin which is worthless. Small victory the Dr said she could reduce to half, hopefully we can ditch them.

      @@mjones1122 My mother too has AD and passed away 20 yeas ago. She was prescribed a heavy dose of thioridazine which zombified her and she was never the same again. This drug has since been discontinued for dementia. I now work as a pharmacy dispenser, if only i knew then what I know now, I would not have let her within a mile of that those primitive toxic pharmaceuticals.

    My grandpa had Alzheimer’s & was diabetic on insulin. His doctor said that it was actually type 1 even though he was diagnosed as an adult. He had 3 sisters develop it also. They were all type 2 diabetes. When I learned of the connection between diabetes & Alzheimer’s, that was enough to help convince me that low carb/Keto was the correct way of eating.

    Love the content. Please upload more often dr. My MIL died of this horrible disease this June. She was a vegan for a very long. Not an extreme vegan that she had some cheese, salmon etc but didn’t eat red meats or eggs etc for over 30 years. She died at the age of 84 which is pretty young. My mom is almost 90 and she is doing great.
    It is just so sad to lose your family members because of their diets. And the thing is that her daughters also refused to eat red meats by learning from their moms.
    My husband is 49 and We are on carnivore. Guess what! He is the healthiest sibling of them all.
    We are trying spead the importance of red meat consumption whenever we gather.
    Love them and do not want to lose them either.

      Same thing w/ my Mom, at the end her dementia was sooooo bad, and she lived on cookies smeared w/ jelly/jam and ensure shakes and pudding. She was always slender, but she had a major sweet-tooth her whole life. Her favorite thing was always dessert. Every night a bowl of ice cream w/ maple syrup or chocolate sauce. All she ate were carbs. She loved wafer cookies and any kind of soft cookie. No doctor ever told her to eat protein and fats. EVER!

      My sister has Parkinson's, and she just turned 40 this year. Also a mega carb eater and drinks beer every weekend. Severely overweight. I've tried to tell her that changing her diet by eating LCHF will help her, but she keeps saying she "doesn't have the time to look into it." It's sad to watch the people we love deteriorate from diseases that are almost entirely preventable.

      Dear Sarah, that's so sad that she feels she doesn't have "time" to look into it. Not looking into it is costing her time. That being said, I encourage you to tell your sister about Low Dose Naltrexone for Parkinsons. It's a small dose 4.5 mg compounded and it's had wonderful effects for all brain related diseases. I pray she get "time" soon.

    I suffered Trumatic brain injury/emergency craniotomy/massive stroke in 2014. I also started a low-carb high-fat diet. It was strictly for weight loss at the time, but have since learned it was the best decision I could have made for my healing brain. I have a greater risk of early dementia and I’m doing everything I can to prevent that from happening. Thank you for all you do.

    My father-in-law had heart disease and then alzheimers. It is an awful disease. We went keto but not soon enough and my husband had a cardiac event with 3 stents now. Hopefully we will be able to keep alzheimers at bay but it is scary knowing it is in his genes.

    Don’t use aluminium cooking vessels, aluminium passes through the blood/brain barrier. Use glass utensils wherever possible.

      Also antiperspirant. Goes into your bloodstream from your armpits. Avoid sugar like you avoid aluminum.

    My grandmother and grandfather both have dementia and or alzheimers. They eat so many caths and sweets and fried foods, yet they dont care to stop , they dont care that its killing them and they don't want to learn any new way of doing anything. Its sad to watch

      I have often wondered if this "I don't want to learn anything new" is one symptom of brain damage. My mom, started this at 60, she didn't want to go to the movies... or watch movies... I thought that was odd. She just wanted to do this limited set of actions (including eating). This may itself be a first sign something is wrong.

    Alzheimer’s will sneak up on us if we don’t clean up our diet and lifestyle. Twice as many women than men get Alzheimer’s. Maybe because women have more of a sweet tooth. Also, muscle mass/strength plays a factor.

      women tend to eat less protein than men. A huge mistake or a huge missed steak. Some women tend to starve themselves to stay thin, doesn't work.

    As I'm transitioning towards the carnivore end of the spectrum, there are a few health conscientious people in my life who are highly concerned. One believes I am going to end up with a meat compaction in my digestive system. The other is concerned about glycine supplementation to prevent early aging as well as limiting protein to ~23 g per meal.
    Would you kindly consider addressing these issues in an upcoming video or two? I'm sure my friends aren't the only ones with these concerns.

    Look into Dr. Mary Newport. She stumbled on Ketones as a way to improve the health of her husband with early onset Dementia. Eventually she now lobbies for Ketones, Coconut Oil, and Ketone Esters to prevent Dementia. Dr. Boz also has a good video showing how the brain doesn't get proper energy over a certain age with Sugar but Ketones go into the brain by a different pathway and improve the energy.

    Dr. Cywes, My son-in-law was just diagnosed with PLS. It's a form of ALS and the doctors have told him there is no cure and treatment. NO TREATMENT??? No pharmaceutical treatment. Why would any pharmaceutical company pay for a study to see how people do on a ketogenic or carnivore diet? They wouldn't. I wonder what your thoughts are on any brain disease and low carb/no carb? I'd guess it can't hurt! Thank you for all you do!

      Consider researching a mitochondrial specialist. Just because there isn’t a drug doesn’t mean there isn’t a treatment-type 2 diabetes and low crab/keto

    Very enlightening! I will have to look into why I still have inflammation on Keto. Also, how is inflammation generally measured. I was told that my high ferritin was a marker of inflammation.

      Try carnivore as an elimination of everything then you will have a baseline. You can slowly add things back as you determine the source of inflammation.

      Yeah. And it seems they always were (with the exception of fattening up on fruits in the autumn to get set to survive winter), but we got badly misinformed about them in recent decades. These days, we needn't even fatten up to survive winter. That's why I'm low carb for life. Carbs aren't part of the proper human diet. Sugar destroys, kills.

    Dr Cywes, you mentioned neuronal death and neurons not being replaced however could you comment on BDNF and brain elasticity?

      BDNF works on nerves less on gray matter cells in humans. Neurogenesis, growing new brain cells in adults, is unlikely to have significant potential in humans. More so in rodents. In humans it has more of a repair than regeneration function. Still a lot to figure out though.

    I believe the reason humans produce ketones so readily is to help feed our big brains. That is, ketones are REQUIRED. If you are not a fat burner producing ketones your brain is literally starving. This becomes critical when insulin resistance develops and even less glucose gets into the brain cells.

    My mother died of Creutzfelst Jacob Disease, 10 years ago. She had the familial type. CJD rapidly destroys the prions in the brain, and is a horrible way to die.

    Seems you have a correct take on brain plaques. they are present, but not causative of dementia. Good advice to change your diet when you're young. Got a time machine handy?

    Some old people lose some of their sense of taste and tend to go for sweeter food. I wonder...

      I think there is also an inability to cook good food as an elder. I once visited an "active adult community" that served food, that turned me right off... the food they served was slop that I wouldn't feed to my pets.

    Can you correct dementia so it doesn't go into all-timers? Or are they totally different? My husband has dementia from (carbs?, drinking, stress & "clonazepam- given for PTSD" by the VA).

      The doctor explained to me that Alzheimer's is diagnosed based on the rate of decline once dementia has been determined.

      @@mjones1122 Thank You! I understand that! My husband is better now, than when he had his first diagnoses. Still doesn't remember a lot of thing's. Trying to hold it at bay, 4 years now.

    Ketones can help. Gr. Stephen Cunnane is doing a clinical study and has found two tablespoons of MCT oil per day can produce enough ketones to restore about 10% of lost brain function.

      @@mjones1122 MCT oil can cause diarrhea if you are not used to it. Dr. Boz suggests "just lick the spoon" at first, to see how you handle it. I'm 73, have been keto/carnivore two years. I take a tablespoon in the morning, another one in the afternoon, if I can remember. oops. :) I have a little brain fog if I don't get enough sleep. I had a dizzy spell five years ago, went to the ER. A brain scan showed mild cerebral atrophy. Had another spell last year; another brain scan showed no change. Thank God.

    At the beginning of my keto journey I ate raw eggs daily for 3 months. Could the avidin in the egg whites caused biotin deficiency? Could there be permanent damage to the nerve cells or brain? THX

      I believe eggs have caused inflammation in my body, likely affecting the brain over time. Perhaps it’s pro inflammatory for me not everyone.
