    I have a Maytag washer model A408 that was made in 1978 and it is still going strong after 36 years!! Your 1996 machine is still just a baby in Maytag years.

    I love the Maytag dependable care washer! Especially the first generation models with thee agitators that looked very much like the late 70's early 80's models. They still had the filter in thee agitators. Even some of the first models' agitators were still in Maytag blue. Which are very hard to find. They still are being used in many people's homes.

    After 25 years of heavy use and reliability our same 1996 washer finally broke down smoking. The repair man is coming today to look at it today. The smoke smelled like a spent electric motor so it may be a costly repair which depending on cost we may do because, unlike modern washers, this Maytag Dependable Care machine is almost indestructible.

    Great old machines. The lint filter inside the dasher worked surprisingly well, drawing water in through the dasher post and pumping out through the flair between the vanes by centrifugal effect.

    That Maytag washer has the "orbital" transmission, it has a shorter stroke agitation action. That replaced the "helical-drive" transmission, that had the longer stroke agitation action. If loaded properly, this (orbital) Maytag washer does a very nice job of cleaning dirty laundry!

    Oh yeah, also wanted to say that the vinegar is a pretty cool alternative because I have heard many say that fabric softener overtime with towels can prevent them from absorbing water properly.

    I have two Maytag washers from the early 90s. The only thing I had to change on them since we're the belts once. I stopped using liquid fabric softners because they grow a gel on the inside parts which form mold over time. Unfortunately, Maytag stopped offering parts for these workhorses soon causing these to be scrapped! I was very fortunate to find one load level switch used on ebay to save my one machine that was overfilling all of a sudden. I bought it and switched it out now I'll have it for another 25 years. Don't overload and leave top open when done to prevent rusting inside.

    I have the 1995 Maytag washer/dryer pair, Model Numbers LAT9235AAE & LDG5005AAE. The timer and belts on the washer have been replaced twice over the last 20 years. I started repairing all of my appliances myself in 2009. In 2011, I replaced the drive motor on the dryer for the first time. Twenty years after I purchased them new, they still run very smooth. Every repair man and appliance parts counter I have talked to told me it is better to keep these classic Maytag machines going instead of buying a brand new other-brand machine. When I purchased these machine's new in 1995, I also purchased a Maytag Dishwasher with a built in disposer. I regret leaving that Maytag Dishwasher in my first house when I sold it.

    I know this is an 8.5 year old video but how did you get the lid hinge area so clean? I have a 1994 Dependable Care that is almost identical to this, but it really needs to be cleaned. There’s a massive dirt build up in the corners right underneath the nylon ball hinges and I can’t really figure how how to clean it without removing the lid, which I also don’t know how to do.

    I have model LAT8414AAE with the matching LDE8824ACE dryer, not sure but I think it's about a 2000 or 2001 model. Bought the set last year for $100 & it's by far the best washer & dryer I've ever owned. It's developing an intermediate leak around the water valve but for now it's no big deal. Just hope it's many more years before parts eventually become discontinued because I don't plan on ever buying another one..

    That Maytag washer has the "orbital" transmission with the short-stroke agitation. The "pitman drive" transmission that Maytag used to make had a longer-stroke agitation, that I actually preferred. But....if the "orbital" transmission Maytag washers are not overloaded, they give a good/clean wash for sure!

    • @vintageappliguy
      @vintageappliguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Web Surfin The "Orbital" Transmission and the "Helical Drive" Transmissions are both are helical drive transmissions, the only difference is that the orbital has a shorter stroke then the original helical transmission (aka Pitman Drive transmission) If you take the front off a Pitman Drive Maytag and an Orbital Drive Maytag they both look same and other than the Orbital having a shorter agitation stroke, they both operate the same! Both agitate when the reversible motor is running in one direction and then turn and lock on themselves when the motor runs in the other for spinning. This is why both transmissions have a counterweight, because the whole transmission, whether Pitman or Orbital, spin with the washtub during the spin cycle.

      Thanks for the clarification! A family member of mine just bought a "reconditioned" Maytag "dependable care" washer just like the one in this vid. If it's not over-loaded, it does a great job washing the clothes clean. I'm sure it will last a long time.

    Hi everyone, I have one of these washers and am having a difficult time trying to find out how to remove lint from the actual washer. Is there an lint trap (so to speak) inside this washer and if so, where is it located? I need help I love this washer but am sick to death of the lint any help would be soooo appreciated. Thank you, Debbie Young

  • @spatsbear
    @spatsbear  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is correct.
    I use white vinegar for all my wash loads. My laundry is much softer and more comfortable to wear, towels absorb water like they were new, and removes built up detergent and fabric softener in clothes that makes them look dull. I also noticed much less lint after drying too.

      Not really Whirlpool's fault. US Goverment made residential appliances to be more efficient and since recently they are also doing that with commercial appliances. Maybe President Trump can propose things around as he is demanding American Steel.

    Anyone know what size the drum capacity was of 1996 model ? In cubic feet. Ours is on the brink of death, and I want to replace the unit with a similar capacity.
    3 years ago the porcelain started to chip of inside the drum , then 2 years ago the control knob started to only respond after being turned a few times to the setting you wanted, now the washer is having trouble spinning clothes dry. Its nearing its end of life sadly.

    The basic design of this washer goes back to 1958 NOT 1985 in the early 1990's the shortened the agitaion stroke but this is still technically a helical drive transmission. In a sense all 1958 circa 2003 Dependable Care Maytag's have orbital transmissions in the fact that the motor turns one way for agitation and then reverses and causes the whole transmission to revolve for the spin cycle. The basic design of the dryer dates from 1976 when the discontinued the Halo of Heat models

    There is a separate drain connection off camera near the floor the washer is hooked to.

    Enjoyed your video & thanks for posting.. I too have a Maytag Washer Oversize Capacity Performance Series which was purchased in April of 1997. I am curious as to the amount of cubic feet inside the tub ? Has been an excellent appliance and only had 2 repairs on it since 1997 and is presently 21 years old... Much appreciated... :-) My guess is 5.3 ?

    • @jhomrich89
      @jhomrich89 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this era Maytag had two tub sizes 2.9 as an economical choice and 3.2 cubic feet on more premium models. This one appears to be the larger tub model as large tub models have 4 water levels like it looks like this one has, and smaller ones have only 3. Mine has the smaller tub but I can live with that as it's only me and it still fits a weeks worth of clothes in for me.

Seriously, the design of the perforated dasher post used centrifugal effect during the wash and rinse cycles to pump water through the clothes. does this machine still a lint filter in the dasher post like older models? The slight imbalance appears to be well controlled by the suspension.

      Sorry for the late reply, no, we replaced them with the 2015 Speed Queen set and a late 70s Kenmore set. We donated this pair.

      I was just seeing who still had these. I have this exact set. Just replaced my dryer wheels and belts and stuff last year. Never had any problems out of these. Ever. I keep them maintenance every year.

    Beautiful! We have had that same washer since the late 80's and just now, in late july of 2021 we are having a issue with the cold water not working on it... repair guy said it was ready for the trash and not worth fixing. What do you think?

      Most likely a fill solenoid valve which I'm sure you can find on eBay or at an online appliance parts store. Throw that in and I'm sure the Maytag would still end up outlasting a new machine that you would have purchased.

      Thanks, I knew your insight would help. After talking it over with my sister, we have decided to see if we can get it fixed.

    Restore had a slightly older model of the washer (black control panel with same functions as these ones) for $150. Was pissed I couldn't get it :/ The back had some rust damage and the rubber grips on the knobs was a bit tacky from age degradation but the rest of it looked like it just came out of the box.
