When I was living alone, working about 60 hours per week, had a long commute both ways, and didn't get an actual lunch break, this stuff was about the only way I got any nutrition at all. I doubt it's as healthy as eating a diet rich in whole plant foods, but it's a big step up from a vending machine or a drive thru.

Similar situation with the lunch break issue and no time for prepping or batching. Not a vegan, but just got some Huel to see if it's better than my current "I can eat those chips really fast" solution. Fingers crossed it tastes OK.

@Novasity Your body needs solid food, not just macro/micronutrients; for fibre, so your digestive juices start to flow when you chew; so saliva can start to break down food; so nutrients are absorbed at different stages of the digestive process; not just in the lower intestine. No doctor would recommend living on soylent.

@@Superfantastictop10 soylent is definitely a joke but huel seems to be making progress. It is separating itself into having low carb products and original products so hopefully as time goes on they will stay away from the bad things. I just started huel working 7 days a week but I also eat a variety of berries and fruits and salads throughout the day as well. I'm doing this more for weight loss. I tend to eat my meal prep way to quickly and end up with 200-500 more calories per day than I need. I'm just that type of person that if I restrict myself to one type of food I will stick to it. But again I work 56 hours a week. I also thing many of the issues people point out are less of an issue...like there being to much omega 3...which is needed for ALA conversion rates.

I have two soylents/huels (both bottled) per day. I eat real food for two meals and have small healthy snacks if I get hungry, which I rarely do. I did it as a way to get control of how I was eating and it's a great way to keep track of calories and nutrients. Here's what I can tell you. I started at 380 pounds. 16 months later I am at 235. When I started my cholesterol was 320 and is now 172. I no longer have type 2 diabetes or apnea. While neither of these products are weight loss products they have absolutely helped me get control of my eating. I do appreciate what you're saying and this video taught me some things, not knocking it. Just offering a different perspective. These products have been a part of my success. hard for to be mad at them. I am on the go, it helps.

Would you please consider doing a video about the fast mimicking diet developed by longevity researcher Valter Longo? He was interviewed by Rich Roll a while back, and, while they clashed a bit over Longo’s general dietary recommendations (not strictly vegan), Roll seemed impressed by the fasting data.
Many are put off by Longo’s involvement in packaging and selling an FMD kit (at an exorbitant $250/kit), but I understand his share of profits goes to charity. And there is no shortage of DIY versions out there for those who prefer to approximate the tested version and save a chunk of change.
Anyway, I would be interested in hearing your opinion. Thanks.

What was “Soylent Green?” It was a movie starring Charlton Heston where he discovered it was made from humans. That’s how I view omnivores btw-a piece of flesh (cow, dog, human) can look the same if it’s prepared a certain way. Not interested in drinking any mystery powder, nor am I interested in consuming any flesh. But one day, when resources are scarce, omnivores will turn to eating their fellow species as regular sustenance.

Response from the Huel creator himself:
He’s incorrect on so many points:
MCTs - Huel is low lauric and high capric and caprylic acid
Huel has a GI of 27 - so his oats being digested quickly comment is moot
Defending Soylent here: he’s incorrect on isomaltulose which is not a sugar; it’s a low GI polysaccharide
Leucine - I couldn’t disagree with him more. You need a reasonable amount of leucine per meal to activate the mTor enzyme to kick start protein synthesis. Inadequate leucine relative to carb intake, is one of the reasons contributing to obesity
If he thinks we’re trying to appeat to keto diet, he doesn’t know what a keto diet is!
Not sure of the relevance to slating added vitamin A to either Huel or Soylent
It’s a shame he didn’t spend an hour or so more checking out some facts before making the video.

A couple of years ago I had a period of the most severe depression that I'd ever experienced. I had completely stopped cooking, so I was subsisting on total junk food and hardly eating. I decided to buy some Huel and I found it very useful in so far as it meant: a) that I was eating, and b) that what I was eating contained at least some nutritional value.
I appreciate this video for being ostensibly quite fair-minded - it's prima facie unlikely that meal replacements are going to be either complete panaceas or fatally toxic sludge. I also appreciate Mic for his hardline advocacy of the notion that the best possible health is something worth making a serious go at attaining. It's a dysmal feature of our culture that it is considered unusual. However, given the very real constraints sometimes imposed by the complications of life or even simple weakness of will or preference, many of us will be choosing on occassion amongst sub-optimal alternatives; in that context, our choices shouldn't be measured by the yardstick of optimality. I think these sorts of meal replacements can sometimes play a very useful role for standing in place of worse options. Even just from a marketing perspective, I regard it as a small victory that Huel is spreading the notion that a Vegan diet can be nutritionally complete.

I jumped on the Soylent train in 2015 and definitely consumed too much of it over the course of a year (stressful job) and I ended up developing a massive Candida overgrowth in my gut. While I can't definitely say Soylent was the cause, I've suspected it - and meal replacements in general - ever since. This was the beginning of a long, arduous journey of healing and recovery - which has led me to now (2019) where my Candida symptoms are still present - but very sparse and manageable. While I definitely regret eating poorly in the past (which seems to have damaged my microbiome permanently), the silver lining has been self education. In the past four years, I've drastically reduced my sugar intake, migrated to buying healthier foods and began cooking almost every meal I eat. This is also why I'm watching this video right now! So thanks for the time and effort you put into your videos - it means a lot to everyone here!

Sorry about your Candida and yes, there are very few successful long term easy diet fixes and fads. Every time I've tried to incorporate the same EASY meal variant several times a day, I got burned. This process help me discover food allergies (and other side effects) that were revealed if I ate them in large quantities rather than just different foods & shakes throughout the day. I pray that your body heals soon

I'm that person you are talking about in the end, I love food but I'm a real crappy eater and maker of food. Not a crappy cook, when I finally cook something it usually tastes good, I just tend to forget about food completely or just be unable to muster the energy to make some. Have been ever since I was young.
Combine that with a very active lifestyle and being a "hard keeper" you can prob discover the problem.
Wich is the reason I love a Huel, I can replace a meal or two on top of my normal food intake those days when I normally would end up skipping meals.
I'm fully aware it's not ideal and have issues, and I try to eat healthy, whole food as often as possible.
BUT it is better for me to reach for my Huel bag when I know I just won't have the (mental) energy to prep food then going without.
Instead of ending up tired and hungry later at night when my lack of food catches up with me I feel full, satisfied and have the energy I need through out the day.

I've been drinking Soylent heavily for the past 12-months and I can't say I feel it's been a best decision. For example, there were days where I virtually only drank Soylent, because I was tight on money, didn't have the time, rushing to school, or just didn't want to get out of bed. My body felt completely drained; I always would think, "But I drank a Soylent!?", but I kept telling myself the exhaustion was due to lack of sleep or mental health issues.
I know I shouldn't feel any embarrassment, but I can't help but be a tad ashamed of myself for not looking into it first. And I'm not saying Soylent is bad. This was very educational. I was considering trying Soylent or Huel, but I think trying Kachava would be better. Obviously the 240-250 calories per meal is wtf levels of low, but I do plan to use this as a supplemental snack more than a meal replacement. I work insane hours, forever changing and never consistent, and I needed something I could drink and not eat. I know this video is from 2018 so I'm not sure if you've don't an update on these replacements, but if there is one I'd love to see what they've changed over the years.

Hi, I have enjoyed your informative content for over 5 yrs now. You helped me make the transition to a plant.based diet. You provide value and thank you.
I have been using Huel for 4 months now and can tell you that it has made a big difference in my like. I can manage my macros simply and don't have large kcal deficits and binges. I feel satiated always and have no urges. I also have been saving about 35% on my food bill and have zero food waste. It is good/whole food, when you look at the product its simply powdered versions of the food. Like when I made smoothies. They have a full line of food including Meals, Protein powder snacks and bars.
I also travel alot and now always have a healthy option. No more best of bad choices when I am really hungry.
When you sum up all the benefits, IMO, it's a simple decision and makes a consistent/long tern based diet much more sustainable.
Keep up the great work and thanks again.

I used Huel for a couple of months and yes of course it's not a replacement for a well balanced real plant based diet. But I am a chemistry student and it's pretty hard to get enough to eat per day sometimes, so shakes like these are pretty good if you're in a hurry. And it's still healthier than the fast food ( even vegan) you would eat otherwise if you don't have other options

Just ordered Huel today after reading through their website, and figured I needed a second opinion so I knew what I was getting into. I've been vegan for a little over two months now and have been too lax about planning meals recently. Many times I've ended up without lunch at work and either survived off gas station potato chips or had to eat something non-vegan just to keep my calories up (I work construction so this is vital). I think using Huel to replace one to two midday meals and eating whole foods for breakfast and dinner could be a healthy route to go, and it is definitely going to keep me from cheating my diet two or three times a week like I have been recently. Great video, thanks for the info!

Here's a quote from Huel's Registered Nutritionist (who, interestingly, also defends Soylent too),
"He’s incorrect on so many points:
MCTs - Huel is low lauric and high capric and caprylic acid
Huel has a GI of 27 - so his oats being digested quickly comment is moot
Defending Soylent here: he’s incorrect on isomaltulose which is not a sugar; it’s a low GI polysaccharide
Leucine - I couldn’t disagree with him more. You need a reasonable amount of leucine per meal to activate the mTor enzyme to kick start protein synthesis. Inadequate leucine relative to carb intake, is one of the reasons contributing to obesity
If he thinks we’re trying to appeal to keto diet, he doesn’t know what a keto diet is!
Not sure of the relevance to slating added vitamin A to either Huel or Soylent.
It’s a shame he didn’t spend an hour or so more checking out some facts before making the video."

Eating space food won't make up for the damage working 40+ hours a week does on our physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual health. That said, I respect y'all and your hustle and doing what we have to survive in this apocalyptic hellscape. I am personally looking for meal replacement options for a chronic gut illness, the medical options covered by insurance are either (a) loaded with industrial animal and big agro products or (b) prohibitively expensive. I ordered Huel to give it a try as it's less than half the cost of my current medical meal replacement with similar specs. I eat half my calories from meal replacements and mostly pureed whole foods for the other half. Good luck everyone on your health journeys!

It's probably better when it's fortified rather than a pure calcium supplement, which most studies talk about. However, there is no conclusive evidence in which circumstances calcium supplements cause atherosclerosis, or if they do cause it. I would just stay away from calcium supplements and fortified foods, and if you want to supplement for your bone health, like many do, then just stick with a healthy diet and possibly a vitamin D supplement. Vitamin D is essential for being able to utilize the calcium you have circulating in your body.

I bought Huel, unfortunately I had to order 2 giant bags. It was really useful on a mountain trip, where I had virtually no access to any store, let alone one with vegan food or fresh produce. Can't say it was the best, but I was fine, definitely had energy and was feeling satiated. It also has a very long expiration date (12 months).
On the other side Huel is really powdery, quite bland (had to add a sweetener of some sort anyways) and can be chunky (and using a blender destroys nutrients even further). It's great in oatmeal in the morning and that keeps you full forever. It's fine as a meal enhancer, but not replacement, especially every meal. I can't see myself buying it again, it's just not for me, I love cooking, whole foods, texture of any sort, spices etc.

I’m so grateful for these products and hope they continue to develop further. 😊❤️

So, the moral of the story here is: just eat real whole food! Plant-based of course.

@@AmetReloads If I was raised in a factory farm I rather not be born at all, rather than be tortured my whole life untill they kill me. Maybe small family farms are ok, but people would still have to eat less animals because it is not sustainable for our worlds population. I personally cannot imagine raising an animal and then 2 years down the road killing it for food. I just keep imagining that these animals love the farmers, consider the farmers family, and then they are betrayed by them.

I am having huel since 6 months and since 3 months i am having it atleast 4 times to max 5 times a day targeting 2000 calories per day. I had my blood test done past week, all my levels look normal in fact much better than last year. Huel is a great product. I would love to continue it for my whole life.

I do a lot of sport, and I use Huel instead of taking Whey.
    It works amazing.
I’m just wondering if Huel is not too much expensive compared to whey. But contrary to it, Huel not only gives proteins but also a lot of vitamins.

recently for a very personal health reason i became interested in, well, health. my readings on that went well until i hit the question of diet. be real, very intelligent and well meaning people exist from no plant food at all, to no animal food at all. you are very clearly, and your honesty is appreciated, in one of those camps. its also kinda the most popular camp. so in any case i just want to say that i , like most people, just wanna do whats right, excuse the extremely bad use of the english language here. in any case i saw with almost no excercise worth mentioning because i tore an abdominal muscle that basically precluded it, i lost about 85 pounds, from 265-270 to 180 stable, regardless of how much i eat. the biggest changes in my diet were no sugar, no alcohol, and no junk food. at one point i was losing weight so fast that it was visible on a day to day basis. literally i would wake up and look at myself and see i had l ost weight. beyond that my liver markers as per a blood test all went normal, my heart rate dropped from the 90s to 60, my blood pressure is ideal ... and the diet that seems to have caused this was neither vegan or keto. its a bowl of whole oats every morning, no fruit at all except a few berries, a massive amount of vegetables over the course of the day, and usually one meat thing in the evening. 85 pounds and a complete normalization or better of all things even in the absence of an ability to exercise. I write this simply to ask where is there a forum full of intelligent people that i can talk to, debate, argue with, etc to try to understand what happened in my own body.

thank you so much for all of this good info, as always. Definitely not trying to criticize, just inform... As a massage therapist, I noticed that you lean your head and gesture with your head towards the left the most. Asymmetry is very typical, very normal and human... But if you are not already getting massage, I recommend that you find a therapist near you to help counteract this. you seem very healthy, and very attractive, and I wish the both of you well... but I would be remiss if I did not recommend this! Best wishes, and keep up the good work!

probably not a problem see how much the study used.. if im not wrong it was not fortified foods but with a calcium supplement, compare the amount if its much lower it shouldnt be a problem maybe even good if youre not getting calcium from where you should

The amount from that is quite small compared to replacing the calcium from entire meals with supplements.
