This is cool. Just flushed and changed my coolant on my CB1300SA using this video and it worked a treat. I even put my little yorkie terrier, rusty, inside the house which was just aswell as when I picked up the bucket with coolant from the motorbike the handle came off and and the whole lot splashed all over the garden patio. Took me longer to clean up than changing the coolant. Awsome.

@@CanyonChasers After 30 years riding, I finally bought a liquid cooled bike. I wasn't afraid to try flushing it, just afraid of screwing it up. Thanks again for this vid. Yeah, shop charges these days are highway robbery.
This was REALLY well done. Props to you guys. Will be coming back to this channel for sure. I watched a few vids on this process and this was by FAR the best.
I haven't tried on my 848, and Hypermotard But cleaned my Honda car with Vinegar and water, worked great! Planning to run just water/Water wetter for street and track riding. Thanks for the video!
Just watched the first minute of this video, I saw the warning about how toxic these material are for dogs. I already like your approach and respects your care for our best friends. cheers mate! btw great video! :)
Awesome video and THANK-YOU SO MUCH for specifically clarifying WHEN and when NOT to remove the radiator-cap!!! (such as,do you put the cap back ON the radiator while running the "cleaning" mixture?) Thanks again.
Propylene glycol doesn't transfer heat as well. A water wetter or surfactant is probably beneficial to help the water contact more surface area, but only to the point it resists foaming and such.
Your knowledge feeds my inner nerd. Thank you for making me feel confident doing this for the first time having owned 12 motorcycles over 17 years. Yes I'm embarassed
I've been a biker for over 30 years, and do most of my routine maintenance, just thought I'd look to see if there was anything I missed, and I'm very impressed. One thing I'd like to add is that ethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol can be safely mixed, but never mix those with OAT coolant, nor use it in systems which are not totally sealed from the atmosphere. Really impressed, and the issues with pet safety are hardly ever touched on elsewhere.
I recently bought a 2019 Yamaha mt09, but noticed the coolant level is low, the mileage is just under 2000 miles, Is it ok to just add coolant instead of draining and flushing?
Absolutely! You could simply add a bit of distilled water, or get the coolant that Yamaha recommends for your bike. Remember the mixture in your radiator is typically 50/50. Coolant lubricates and prevents freezing. Water actually does the cooling. So it's okay if your system has a bit more of one or the other based on the temperature you bike lives in.
What if I had some kind of dirt in coolant? Can it be mixture of old factory fluid and new one which I had to add, because level was below minimum or my gasket seal is gone / water pump?
Great video, thanks! I got a question; In my owners manual they say that i need to use ethylene glycol. In the video you say that it is not the best coolant, but at the other hand, i need to follow my manual. What is the best to do? I have got some issues with hot starts so i want to make sure everything around my cooling system works optimal. Thanks in forward for your answer! Kind regards, Arne
I was wondering can you use the vinegar and water mixture in the radiator to flush the system for a car or vans/trucks also instead of on bikes without hurting the cooling system
Most likely both of them. The one on the water pump is most likely the drain, but the other one will work like a bleed, and allow air into the system so it drains more completely.
Very helpful video for us motorcycle noobs. I have one question though. Once the cooling system is topped off can I let the bike run with the radiator cap off to expel any air trapped in the system?
After flushing i got a dripping coolant leak which looks to come from behind the water pump.. is this normal? Maybe a overflow in that area? Any help plz thanks... this is for an 03 R6 thanks in advance
I'm trying to figure out whats wrong with my 09 Yamaha Royal Start TD XVZ1300. I can hear what sounds like the fan running, but it sounds as if something is stuck in there, like it's hitting something. Not sure what it could be. And I have no idea how to find the fan.
Excellent video. Very well spoken and easy to follow. I have air bleeder bolts on my bike.. Probably bc I have to take the tank off to get to the radiator cap. This should suffice without having to top it off a second time right? Thanks for the vid.
Thanks great vid. But did I mess up? 2013 R1...I drained the old coolant, flushed with distilled water with the drain plug off, then added 50/50 vinegar water and ran the bike with the system closed till fan came on. Then I rinsed by adding water with the drain plug out.. then closed the drain plug and added the new coolant. So I did not run the bike with pure distilled water, just rinsed with the drain plug out. Am I ok, or do I need to drain the new coolant and start again by running the bike with pure distilled water...then add more new coolant?? I have seen some videos that say run the bike with pure distilled water after the 50/50 step
Hello, I just bough a botttle of Engine Ice for my bike however it looks pretty small it's half a gallon, how many gallons / liters do I need to do a full change? My bike is an MV F3 and can't fijd this info anywhere.. Thank you
May i ask something sir? I am from manila philippines and its so very traffic in here my yamaha r1 too much hot 240degree and the red light indicate for hot blinking the red light sign.it is normal for heavy traffic sir?thanks for answer
Help please. While blipping to get rid of the air bubbles (wasn't able to get rid of all of them) I noticed that as the bike got warmer the coolant was rising to the point where it almost spilled out had I not killed the engine. When the bike cools down the coolant starts going back down again. What I'm worried about is after I cap it off and while I'm riding, what if the coolant rises again with the cap on it and the pressure would build up and something disastrous can happen. Do help please.
Before I fitted my new 1199 radiator, I flushed and filled up with distilled water / vinegar. Steaming occurred around 80 degrees. So I turned it off, waited 20 mins and flushed it out again. It was grey murky water. Then, repeated the same, but it steamed around 90 degrees. Each refill, it would only take about 1.75 litres? The manual says 2.3+0.5?
When getting the vinegar out and running pure water through, should you just pour water in with the drain bolt out and let it go through it and get the vinegar out or should you run the engine with the water in it as well?
gunsntech411 How well the vinegar flushes out depends a lot on your bike. Most bike will do better if you put in water, run the bike for a moment or two, then dump it out. It may take a time or two before the vinegar smell is gone.
If im just topping up my coolant a little bit does it matter if i use a different brand to what is already in there? i have no idea what is currently in the radiator
sir, im planning to clean the cooling system in my cbr 150r.. its this tutorial applicable on my cbr? is the vinegar safe for the metals and rubbers in the radiator? is it not corrosive?
juan delacruz We put water and vinegar in our bodies and it's not corrosive. I don't know why the aluminum, steel and rubber in a CBR 150R would be different than aluminum, steel and rubber in a Ducati, a Yamaha or a Kawasaki.
CanyonChasers Motorcycle Adventure, Sport and Touring thank you for the info and the wondeful tutorial sir.. ill be applying this to my cbr this week..
good video. I have a doubt: after the flush, the engine block has distilled water on it, so once you pour the coolant, it will mix with the distilled water itself, so you will never have 100% coolant in the system, right? the only way to achieve so would be doing the flushes with coolant instead of distilled water...
Remove the drain hose from the top of the radiator and rinse it. If it's gross, you may need to run a bottle brush through it. If it's really, really nasty, you many need to remove it to clean it - and if its absolutely ghastly - just replace it. :)
I have 2012 triumph Daytona, bike won't start when hot. yesterday went for a short ride and coolent was spraying out for a bit then stopped. went for another 10 min ride - temp light and engine light came on- noticed fan doesn't kick in until 7 bars- any ideas
If the bike won't start when hot, that typically means you need a valve adjustment. Additionally, Triumph used to put really low grade coolant in their new bikes. I don't know if they use better stuff now, but I'd probably start by flushing/cleaning the system and installing fresh coolant.
Propylene Glycol is in A&W Rootbeer.... It is used in the wine industry for cooling wine tanks. Italy used ethylene glycol and it killed a lot of people due to a hole in the wine tank jacket leaking glycol into the wine... So, all wineries went to propylene glycol...

In the final step you need to run the bike a bit with the radiator cap open to burp the system so that the air bubbles escape. Thanks for the video.
Yep
After doing this do you add more to fill it to the very top? Is it okay if there is still a little air as long as you have a reserve tank?
