You brothers are killing it with the content! 3-4 reviews a week! NICE! Mazda just killed it with the CX-90. They priced it well against the available competition. The plug-in hybrid seems fully-baked and doesn't present a ton of sacrifices. The interior is very plush(though it is a blunder on why they don't offer the full-tilt luxury of the Turbo S PP on the plug-in). It is content laden. And it looks good. As for the competition, don't forget about the Lincoln Aviator GT, as well as the JGC 4Xe.
That shifter actually makes 3-point turns nice and easy, making it easy to put it in reverse (and not accidentally putting the car in park.) So yes it's weird but at least there's this one advantage ;-)
Just for record, my 2020 CX-9 has hands free lift gate. Also, personally, I prefer the center knob for the infotainment. It keeps my from smudging my screen and. It gets pretty easy to use. My main complaint on my CX-9 is that the infotainment is slow to start. The CX-90 seems to have fixed a lot of my minor complaints. Very nice review.
Great camerawork and good back-n-forth commentary. I really like the PHEV setup, but Mazda pushed me towards the Turbo S with their content structure.....i.e. my wife wanted the Tan Napa leather interior as well as the exterior moldings in body color (BOTH of those 'wants' required us to purchase a Turbo S Prem Plus). IF this PHEV CX-90 had 38,39,or 40 miles of Elec-only range, I would have ignored her and bought this PHEV! But at 28 miles range, she would have used the gas engine every day on her 18mile one-way commute (36mile round trip). I SO wanted her to be able to use elec only 5 days a week and recharge at home every night...close, Mazda, very close. I am a very happy owner of a '24 Turbo S PP.
How is the 8 speed transmission Otis ? Any updates? Normally I'm hesitant on first year cars but I'm sold on cx70 assuming it's not too long. My very first RWD car and it's SUV. Super excited!
@@kevtn8 .....I predict you will love Mazda's new 8-spd transmission. Both in normal and sport I have had no issues at all. It is a well-geared, sporty transmission. Positive shifts into 2nd and 3rd with near-imperceptible shifts above that. GREAT gas mileage. Sadly, if you are waiting for a CX-70, you will have to wait a little longer since the -70 is delayed til mid-2024. However I saw in person a Japan market CX-60 last month on the streets of Yokohama and it was strikingly good looking. My CX-90 drives great and the top-trim interiors, although expensive, really elevate the ownership experience. Good luck with your purchase.
@@OtisSpringerpilot Thanks Otis. Your experience and feedback is great news for all Mazda fans who have been waiting for the Cx70. I just bought '23 Cx5 turbo so I may wait for the second model year of Cx70 so the delay doesn't really bother me at all. Congratulations again and enjoy your Cx90.
Great review as usual. I love Mazdas. They are usually a great bargain in terms of a luxurious experience and but not a high price relative to other brands. Wish the taillights totally were lit. It looks like rear taillight portion on the tailgate doesn't actually light up. Not a deal breaker for sure, but seems a bit fake.
I just realized that when you did your acceleration test you were not in the sport mode. TRUST ME, I just picked my CX90 PHEV today, the sports mode makes a BIG difference!!! I believe you would have had a higher smile meter had you put it in sport mode.
Something that I've seen in every review of the CX-90 is the apparent lack of room to put your feet if you're sitting in the 3rd row (see 12:43.) It seems that, for whatever reason, there's not enough room to put your toes under the 2nd row seats. Seems odd.
What the computer says for EV range is NOT what you will get. Reviewers that actually drove the CX-90 in EV only mode got 25 miles of range. The CX-90 is rated at 25 mpg in combined driving so charging will only save you 1 gallon of gas. Some people do not consider this but electricity is not free and in my area it cost the same to charge that battery as the cost for one gallon of gasoline so why pay $4,000 for a PHEV option that does not save you money? Take your last electric bill(tax and fees included) and divide the cost by the Kwh used. Then multiple 16 Kwh by your calculated electric rate. Compare you cost to charge the battery to the cost of 1 gallon of regular gas. Then figure out how many years it will take to break even on that $4,000 PHEV extra cost
@Avi Glickman No actually NO reviewer got it or presented that simple fact that the PHEV will take years if ever to break even on the PHEV option cost. Go back to corporate Mazda and tell them to pay me off like they did every reviewer
Is there a switch or menu option to turn off the fake engine noise? Please please say yes! I love this new Mazda and it would be a plus to squelch that dumb fake engine noise.
Love your reviews! FYI, you guys keep saying that a hands-free power liftgate is new to the Mazda lineup, or Mazda has not had it before the CX-90, but my 2020 CX-9 Grand Touring has it.
Great review guys, how do you comoare this with inline 6 turbo S? Is there a big difference in deiving and power between phev and I6? Which one do you suggest?
It'd be awesome if Mazda puts this drivetraion into the upcoming CX-70, or even better, a re-imagined Mazda 6 sedan. Bonus points if they saw fit to making a new Mazda 6 Estate (wagon). There's probably a better chance of pigs taking flight, but a guy can dream, right?
went and drove the I-6 liked it ..... rear wheel drive is so much better than fwd , just wish this size had 2row for us who have no need, want or will ever use a 3rd row , save some added wt and lil under floor storage Locker where the 3rd row seat was... to stash camera's , drones and goodies out if sight always a good review
Any EV folks out there? Bottom line - at a "charging station"- how much would it cost to fully charge this car, one time? I Googled but I keep getting KW this, kw/h that..... I was hoping to know the actual dollar amount for one charge. Thanks
Do you guys have any info on if the CX 70 will be an actual different body or will it be a 2 row seat CX 90? Difficult to find info on it. I’m hoping it’ll be the Anerican version of the current CX 60 available overseas.
Besides the Turbo S feeling a little faster than the PHEV, any other notable differences in how they drive? I understand the PHEV is about 500 pounds heavier.
Nothing substantial. Still handles nicely for a big SUV. We didn't sample one with smaller wheels, but that would likely have a positive impact on the ride
After watching the review and thinking that Single charge only Saves 1 gallon of fuel. - How does this drive system actually work? The first 25 miles run on battery then ICE kicks in?? - How long does battery last if you drive in normal mode??. - is my understanding correct that after driving more than 25 miles, I would need to plug in to recharge the battery?
Is that mean CX-90 will have 369 lb ft torque all the time regardless of battery status?. I guess it turns into hybrid mode as ICE charges the battery??
You do realize that in EV mode you are "burning" electrons and electricity is not free. 25 miles of EV range on 16 Kwh of battery capacity or 25 miles (EPA) on one gallon of gas combined driving. So, the most you can save in EV mode is one gallon of gas. My electric rate (including tax and fees is 0.20 per Kwh or $3.20 to charge that battery. Just filled up at Costco at $3.05 per gallon. For me it would be cheaper to run in hybrid mode than EV.
Personally 26 miles it’s not enough range for my daily commute. If it had a Federal tax credit then maybe it’s worth a consideration. I still think the I-6 engine is the way to go but to each their own.
Yeah I wish they would have just added the PHEV to the de-tuned inline-6 version and made it their top end model. The smooth I-6 is a good match for electric motor. Also does need a slightly larger battery. 30miles of real-world range is minimum.
Mazda needs another 44 trim levels for their sport, off-road, full ev lines. That seatbelt chime is a deal breaker for me. 3 chimes would've been fine but like what? 8? Seriously Mazda? Why isn't the shifter section in full not center with the main console? It's off centered to the left a little. No 8 seats on the higher trims is a mistake. I do give them props for that engine tho.
17:32 - unless your commute includes dropping your kids off, you shouldn't be using this as a daily driver with just one person in it. And by the way, has the EPA released MPG figures yet, including numbers for after the battery is exhausted? That acceleration starting at 18:38 looked pretty leisurely, but I suppose it's adequate as long as you're not in a giant hurry. P.S. I post separate comments for each topic to help the TH-cam algorithm, which I have heard factors in the number of comments into how wide the video is distributed.

Can you get by with regular gas instead of the vastly more expensive premium?

What happens to the power and torque when the EV mileage is drained out and the car runs on gas only mode? Do we still get 323 hp and 369 lb ft?
Yes because Mazda does not allow the battery to totally drain down to zero
I think 10% you cannot use EV mode anymore
