  • What are people looking for when they hire instructional designers? What can you do to show off your experience in the best light and stand out from the competition?
    In this recorded Q&A session, we go live with Tara Coulson, a hiring manager at Amazon Web Services. She shares her insights about how she decides who to hire and what you can do to succeed in the job market.
    If you enjoyed the Q&A session that we did with Joe Stuben earlier in the year, then this session will be of particular interest to you. Tara is the woman who hired Joe, so she also tells us what he did to stand out as an academic with no formal ID experience.

    I didn't have much time for videos today, but I am glad I made time for this since I have an interview tomorrow!!! I feel so much more prepared after joining your community and working through these videos in my own way :)

    This is a really interesting perspective, I wonder how to close the gap when you have been working more in an adult career context. There's less project management for sure, the only examples I can even think of are Organizing field trips, summer camps, or assessment. Planning curriculum as well with book chapters, or modules & levels.

      You’re welcome! I don’t have a list on-hand at the moment, but I would look at the words used in job postings that you’re interested in. You can also check out more videos on this channel to learn more of the field’s lingo.

    I have been an SME for a financial institution and I am hopefully looking for change within the same institution as an Instructional Designer. Besides being an SME, I have quite a bit of experience in training and coaching. What are my chances of getting hired as an ID with the mentioned experiences? Also, 99% of the information I have regarding ID is from your channel 🤫

      Good question, Lawrence! It sounds like your experience could definitely help you on the instructional design front, but one of the most reliable things that you can do to make the transition is to work on your portfolio. It's hard for people to claim that you don't have the skills for ID / eLearning work when you have a portfolio that shows off your expertise.
      In your specific case, maybe you could try networking with instructional designers at your company and learn more about their journeys into their roles? Perhaps your company emphasizes a certain type of experience or doesn't do as much eLearning.
      Overall, sounds like your experience and ID knowledge will be good. Next step would be showing it off in a portfolio :D

    Hi Devlin, thanks for this useful video. I am a transition instructional designer. I am a teacher however since 2019, University gives me to opportunity to be a SME for only 1 course (It has 17 modules) and then I was a SME to another course with similar lenght. Could it be enough for interviews to be hired such as ID?

    • @DevlinPeckYT
      @DevlinPeckYT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Cynthia, good question. 17 modules sounds like a lot for one course, and I bet you learned some useful skills while working on that.
      One of the best ways to get hired as an ID is to show off your skills in a portfolio, but it sounds like you can talk about your experiences building those 17 modules on your resume.
