I am currently studying with a phenomenal violinist. Toured Europe as a young player. I was fortunate to be accepted to her school. Anyway, I always gain watching your videos. She is also pleased to have me watching you.
I’m joining my schools orchestra (who are far ahead of me) in January and I am anxious af and have been trying to rush learn as much as I can. Thank you for making a calm video that still gets the point across. A much needed lesson!
Thank you I’m finally picking up the cello after many years of not playing and practicing Bach’s cello Suite No.1. Thank God for cell phones now because back in 1989 when I was playing I didn’t have that luxury afforded. Now I can watch all kinds of cellists and even you to show me my technique again. It’s almost exactly where I left off with my professor daddy hired long ago. Before he passed away he purchased me a brand new cello and I’m ashamed to say I haven’t been able to pick it up since then and now I’m picking it up again. Are used to be able to play all kinds of things but really I just love to learn solos. I am 50 years old and it’s never too late to enjoy music! Thank you sir!
Just bought my first cello..at the age of 58! Im really impressed with your turorials. Maybe one day I can play like my ancestor who was a cellist in the Hanoveran Court in the 1800s..😄 If not I will have fun trying! Will be using your videos Johnathon to help me get going. Cheers!
I’m very interested learning cello, I don’t have one yet but I will soon and I’m here to get a head start so I’m not completely clueless when I do get my cello. This has been very helpful and any words of Encouragement or tips is greatly appreciated
@@CelloCoach I bought one a week ago and it came in four days ago, his name is Dave (or David), I’ve been practicing whenever I get the chance it’s a lot of fun figuring out how it works and even my older sister has been practicing on it
thank you Jonathan. I've been having trouble with bowing and getting a pleasant sound out of the "a" string. This lesson resolved my problem. What an incredible teacher you are. Happy 2020 New Year!
Thanks for your tutorials jonathan! I like the analogies you drawn in your teaching, the techniques become much easier to understand. Absolutely love the way you describe how to play the A string
Are you rotating the bow as you move closer and further from the strings? If so, do you have a video on what part of the bow touches the strings during the length of the stroke?
Thank you so much for this. Your explanations are very clear and articulate along with your demonstrations. I love the cello but it"s such a challenging instrument.
Thankyou so much for this explanation!! The metaphors really help me keep the different positions in my head - though I just know I'm now going to at some point accidentally refer to the last string as the 'canoe string' xD
Thank you Jonathan, very helpful! Right arm/hand very difficult to master in the beginning. Next time I practice, I will pay more attention to the wrist because I've had problems with that harsh sound coming. :)
You can do i Sari. Think of the bow as an extension of you total arm, so be aware of the elbow, forearm and wrist weight/movement as you learn to play on each string.
Question: I use cheap Prelude strings. They are responsive(and very tinny sounding), but when I do a strong accent on the G string, I notice my bow actually depresses the string, so that I also hits the C string creating a squeak. This is despite the fact my bow is perfectly level with the bridge at that point. I even observe the string being depressed when i do this. and seems like a normal amou7nt of bow pressure for an staccato accent to me. The only thing I can come up with is. 1. my strings are now below my level of accomplishment. . 2 My bow is not tight enough (even tho, I make absolutely sure it is just the correct amount of tension when I start). 3. I am playing too high at the area of strings about an inch below the finger board where it seems my tone is best for that piece, and thus the tension of my strings cannot handle a strong accented "bite" into the A string at that point. 4. I am over bowing, despite the fact I use a light attack on it. and not overbearing, with bow pressure. any thoughts on why this is happening? need better strings? or better bow? or both? or technique?
1 - yes 2 - most likely no 3 - this is the culprit, especially for accents on any string 4 - or you are not controlling the attack to move sideways and not touch another string. Its a common error of a "too loose wrist" whilst accenting. The fingers need to be responsive, the wrist should be flexible but not loose. When we play with firmness, the muscles need to coordinate their flexion with the speed of the note and bow action. Great analysis
Hello! I'm a middle school orchestra teacher and I think this is absolutely fantastic! I would love to use this for my kids learning remotely, but is there any way you could post another version where "go to a knife store" is edited out? Your explanations are wonderful though!
The A string is the most difficult for me to play well. I'm a little short and sometimes I think my arms are not long enough😅. But I think it's my playing posture. It takes time to practice
You used to do live action role play? Thumbs up. :) Thank you, I love your analogies, they are memorable. i am binge watching your videos. :) Very helpful. I had no idea I had to rotate at the end of the stroke.
Been trying to find the answer to this: how do I SKIP strings? Like, playing a not on the G string and on the A string? How do I skip over the D string?
Well so thanks for all your videos! And A string with "sword technique" - YES, this is finally the way for me too to proper A :) No more squeeze sounds, my family will thank to you too :)
squeaks or crunches? playing in your "comfort zone" means finding the area on you bow where the tone is best. Slowly move the bow outside of this area, always studying the bow, maintaining it does not move vertically whilst laterally
@@CelloCoach Thanks I found the main causes is having the angle wrong. Doing the same positions as on the video works well. I also found that if I don't add enough rosin it has this bad sound too. Thanks for helping ☺️
I wonder if the cello I rented could be a bit too big for me...i look at your arm going all over your cello and I am not able to do that at all...I am 5'4" tall ...and since I am 75 yrs old...well I lack some flexibility...thank you!

Just starting cello - Thanks so much for putting this together. The instrument tends to be quite daunting, requiring time and persistence.
