I wish I could "like" multiple times! I have watched many on line teachers that I thought were great, but YOU have taught me much more .....much easier. I found you by accident...I contnue following you on purpose! A million thanks. For the pure love of music...thanks
Jonathan Humphries I have been following on line lessons from another teacher on you tube....I clicked on your video instead of the one I intended to... I'm happy that I did.
I have zero musical knowledge or talent but my daughter has started cello lessons. Thankyou for producing something that I can follow and help her to practice scales.
Gosh I'm so lost, lol. Don't know anything about music and got cello. Wish they were numbered in order, so I know where to start n progress. Thank you for those videos!
Hi Jonathan, Like this cello scale, need your advise. I absolutely have no music background, so should I start by memorize the scale first? As I have no Cello for now. As I am a left hander so I have to bow using my non master hand. Does a left hander pose more difficulties for learning cello? Do you have student that are left hander that have successfully learn the cello?
Excuse me, Mr. Humphries. Somehow our cello scale book has not arrived in the mail yet also nor today and I am wondering about when our scale book will arrive. Probably shortly, maybe not. Sincerely Luke

Hi, I have a kind of a stupid question. How comes that the scale seems different for cello than for i.e. piano? For example, D major starts here on a note that I would call H (or B) and G major starts on a note E. Why is it so different?
It looks like your practicing the minor scales over there. H minor and G major use the same notes. Same thing with E minor and G major. All seven notes in a major scale can theoretically be a starting point, and they have names: Ionian (major), Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aolean (minor), Locrean (theoretical). th-cam.com/video/25Q68RjwLdE/w-d-xo.html Listen to Friedrich Kuhlau's Sonatine Op.20-1 1st Mov. and hear the difference in sound he was able to achieve by switching from major to minor at 21 seconds into the video. There were other factors at play, such as the use of triplets, maintaining the root note, playing louder, and perfect octaves in the bass line. But he just wouldn't have been able to produce such an incredible difference without first playing in major, then springing into minor. The point is, learn both! You'll use them.
It's likely that you're reading the music as treble clef, this is the bass clef (the bottom one in piano music), so the notes are different to what you're used to. The scales still start on the same note, it's just in a different place.
@@CelloCoach ... Maybe encourage pausing of the video...and maybe take it one scale at a time...Also, explaining what the numbers are for...elementary or preschool level :) :) :). You did an excellent job sharing for level of someone who understands the basics already!
All cello players make this mistake NO ONE actually tell you which distance is the first note,, they just placed their fingers expecting for viewer to know, basically without you explaining the distance u place your first finger, i cannot ever proceed...
I'm a beginner who literally knows nothing about Cello, but about to start, and this video confused me. All these notes and finger positions are overwhelming and I don't even know where to start. I did enjoy some of your other videos though.

You are welcome, Sandra. May I ask what you meant by "accident"? It would help be better position this channel's content. Thank you in advance.

He he! I was just watching a cello tutorial with the teacher constantly playing with her long hair and moving it out of the way. It was so annoying.
tie it up or bun it already!

so how do we explain better?
He has a video showing where to put tapes on the fingerboard to help beginners.
Baby hands though.
Yup, but great hair :-P

this is waaaay too fast. is there a video to precede this?
Sorry
You are ok, Luke! So, what are you learning these days?
Good helpful information but to my mind teacher has an obnoxious, know-it-all presence and delivery. Sorry.
