A "Party Line" was a shared telephone line between multiple people. This was very common in rural areas. It also meant anyone else on the party line could pick up their receiver and secretly listen in on your private calls. Everyone had their own ring. The ultimate source of snooping and entertainment for nosy neighbours.

@A297MAN104 The party lines were of course extensive in England too. Due to the enormous distances here in Canada they still existed until the (gasp) 1970's. It was fun to do a banjo ukulele song - I still have a soft spot for Formby! Cheers!
