Question: I'm trying to repair someone else's previous mess and I need to join a horizontal shower line to the horizontal washing machine line. I know to use a wye & 45, but do I need to put a P-trap on the shower line or not? I'm lacking space and doubt I can get much, if any grade in the shower line at all. Thanks.
You showed the Y in vertical and horizontal position for a horizontal waste pipe connection.
What I am calling horizontal position for the Y is where the 45 degree part of the Y itself is in its side with a slight slant upward.
If I tie into cast with a Y, do I still need to tie in a long sweep, or can I just run my pvc straight pipe directly to the Y?

Awesome vid. I'm an electrician doing some of my own plumbing so I'm trying to keep to code as much as possible even though I'm not using permits.
Question: The bathroom I'm building from scratch, can I wet vent? I was planning on wet venting the toilet and possibly shower, both are about 6 feet from the 4" stack I'm tying into. I can vent the sink fairly easily with an AAV. I think I see a vent left from the builders also I could also tie into.

Depends on the code your local area follows. If its IPC your not to vent on a Wet stack it must have a seperate stack. Its best to run the vent on the side of the wet stack and tie back in above the fixture drain inlet into a dry vent. If there are less then 4 fixtures you are approved to use a AAV but it must have access. The best thing to do would be to call your local plumbing inspector and clarify if your municipality accepts AAV's for a bathroom venting option. Some cities do some don't. Have you ever tried to get a wye for a central vac system. I had a terrible time sourcing them for my vac project. Even suppliers had no idea why this was important. It's really not that hard to understand. Good video. 👍
Here's one for you. Adding a pumping station for basement bathroom, as city sewer leaves 18" above floor level. Plan on pumping up into (almost) the top of the stack with Wye/45. Can code (depending on location) allow for mechanical (AAV) venting of the sewage crock for it's vent? or does it need it's own vent through the roof?
Or Possible the backwards sanitee above the Wye on the stack?
With three "fixtures" (Sink/shower/toilet) I planned on venting the drain side using a AAV.

So it was put in backwards and became a flow splitter rather than a combiner. However seems silly that a long sweep sani-tee can't substitute for a wye+45 street as the dimensions are practically the same.
It has nothing to do with size but of direction of flow
Im adding a second sink in my bathroom. Wall is opened up, I found a second drain/vent line that would be closer to the right sink so I plan to tie into that. Do i need a wye or a tee? Do I need a pitch on it if its about 3 feet to behind the sink? Do I need to pick my vanity before I can plumb the two lines or is there a standard space?
If your doing a drain on a vertical drop you can use a sanitee but make sure venting it properly the vent has to be equal distance
@@lanceball6298 The vent line needs to be a separate line from the drain line?
@@RyanfromWA it depends on local code but the vent must be equal distance so if 1 sink a longer distance from the drain drop down then there must be a second vent added to the line. They can vent out of the roof together but must be equal distance. It's hard to explain with out seeing what you have and showing it
@@lanceball6298 when I opened the wall up I found another drain that would be on the right side of the vanity. Can I vent left sink to the left pipe and right sink to the right? Its possible the two 1.5" drain pipes meet up higher up in the wall, ill have to check the roof to see if they are separate
What about a long turn san tee? Aren't they made for the horizontal position?
They can be used for horizontal, but it's not recommended. You should use a wye with a street 45. This is for snaking purposes. Sanitees of any type are not meant to be snaked.
Can you use Sanitary tee horizontally (All inlet outlet horizontal to floor) as a drain to connect into a main drain pipe , like in a Basement ???
Per code a Sanitary tee is not to be used in any horizontal position on any drainage only venting. Remember the main purpose of a Sanitary tee is for venting applications not for drainage. The rule is on an appliance where venting will be on that drainage directly should be the only time a Sanitary tee is used for a drain. Like on a laundry system or lavatory or sink where the vent is directly above that drainage drop.
@Lance Ball how about a toilet, can you use a sanitary Tee to carry the waste to a 3in stack

So if I'm venting a shower, a Wye/Street 45 gets used when connected to the trap on a horizontal run that connects to the main waste line. And the sweep part of it goes towards the downward flow. Correct?
Vents use a sanitee, but if your are tying in a shower trap to a drainage line. you would use a wye with street 45. Hopefully that clears it up. I will always honor Christ as he is my Savior. Thanks for watching

My question is can I use a sanity to discharge two sump pumps into one outlet outside the house?
I have two sump pump croks. One has a sump pump and the other just had a Radon system installed in it. When the system was installed in that one, water level was very low wich is why we decided to use it, but☝️ snow melted and it rain and the water level raised up and now the vent for the raidon system was splashing the water all over the inside of the cover and the silicone seal around it came loose. The water raised up just enough NOT to drain into the other crock where the sump pump is.
I want to install a sump pump in the crock where the Radon system is to keep the water level low at all times so the system works properly.
I was just wondering if I could join the pipes together inside the house in the basement and use the pipe that drains outside for both of them. Thanks👍🏽.
If it it in a pressurized system the codes read different. This information just for non pressurized drainage

you can't use a wye to connect a p trap to a vent
Yeah you'd almost be turning it into an S-trap.
You cant stack a combo, bro.... That's a S Trap, which will pull a siphon on the trap....
So if I’m understanding you correctly you’re saying that a wye can in fact be used to connect a branch line to a vertical stack? That goes against everything that I learned from the code books and construction textbooks and the reputable plumbing channels on TH-cam
Obviously local code trumps all if more strict. But if you have a veticle drop or a horizontal branch a wye is up to IPC code. Again the more strict code trumps but codes allow this. Ive been plumbing over 20 years. Been doing it this way with no problems passing inspections for all those years.
You're way off on everything you're talking about, i reccomend studying the Uniform Plumbing Code
