    My dad drove a van like this around for 30+ years as a mobile mechanic. He was able to accumulate enough money to retire in a large house on the panhandle and buy a couple cars that he had always wanted. He said he could’ve bought a garage and expanded his business but there was something about riding it alone, that gave him a sense of peace. You described him perfectly in the last quarter of the video.

    This reminds me again that there's so many small businesses that rely on beat-up old vans or trucks to put food on the table. I see worn out vans like this rolling around all the time. Some have business decals on the side, others are just a solid color. I gotta respect 'em. They're invaluable to a lot of people.

      As a future small business owner, who drives a 25-year-old pickup with peeling paint, these vehicles deserve respect. They're the automotive equivalent of the thirty-year-old work-horse. My small pickup is not flashy or new, but it is experienced, reliable, and still going strong at over 210,000 miles.

    • @notgray88
      @notgray88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@matthewkoch6937 and best of all, when small business owners finally can afford that nice new vehicle, that 200,000 mile, faded paint, torn upholstery, pickup gets sold to me, a college student living off of 10/hr, for the fair price of $2000 cash. This country would have no future without the dedication of people like you, and I thank you for that. Without this 1989 Ford Ranger my mom would still be driving me to work.

      @@notgray88 funny you say that because I put food on our table for years out of an 89 ranger. I paid a grand for it, put a service cap on it for another 1500 and bought new wheels and tires for it and it really looked pretty presentable for a cheap vehicle. That is the only bad thing with these old vehicles. People do tend to judge you based on them. It didn’t matter much in my case and my truck looked fine but there’s an electrician around town, or was, that drove the biggest heap of an old conversion van with a shitty hand painted sign on it and I suspect he wasn’t getting the same hourly rate or amount of calls as this other guy who buys new vans every year or two and has them fully wrapped with custom wheels.

    My dad passed away some time ago, he had a 2001 Chevy Express 3500 with the 6.5L diesel, before that an E150 extended. His work vans not only defined him and his work as a general contractor, but they defined my childhood. Both where panel vans, no windows, but he had a bench seat out of a passenger van fitted for my brother and I. We went camping with those vans, visited friends with them, went grocery shopping with them. They where as much a part of our lives as the house we lived in. I remember I cried when the E150 was written off by a driver that fell asleep and side swiped it in his big SUV, it was a part of the family, and so became the Express 3500 that replaced it.
    When he passed his brother kept the van, and I still saw it parked in the driveway for a long time. I haven't been by that house in years, but I bet it's still there even. I've thought about asking about it, but I couldn't drive it anyway, there's to many memories tied to it.

      They still make the Econoline, but only as a cutaway cab. The Transit isn't bad, though. It's probably more customizable and comfortable than the E-series, and also cheaper to own because it's more aerodynamic (which means spending less at the pump) and not exclusive to North America, so parts are a *lot* more widespread and cheaper.

    • @Chris_Troxler
      @Chris_Troxler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Park_Place
      Yeah, but what if you want the traditional club wagon or cargo Econoline? Now, if you want a new Econoline, you just get the cab and frame, unless you want the moving van or bus body on it. And, most people who buy a work van are little more concerned with it ability to pull and haul. Personally, while I accept the Transit's place in history, I just can't see being as rugged and have the North American vans. I'm not saying they aren't, I just don't see it. Case in point: I travel a lot. It used to be very common to see an 18 passenger Econoline, Chevy (GM had several different fun size van models), or a Ram pulling a large utility trailer or a piece of equipment behind it. I rarely, if ever, see any of these European based vans doing that. But, that's the beauty of those old vans; they're basic, simple, no bells or whistles, just a capable truck (legally, what we call a van is really know as a panel truck) that can do everything we need.

      Yeah, I think like Ben said, clean and nicely proportioned. Plus I feel like they're not trying to be extremely showy or look super aggressive like every single newer vehicle. To me, it's a look that says "Humble and reliable" rather than "Look at me!!!!".

      There's a DeWalt work radio owner in my family that fit part of that description of primer dust and sawdust, but when it went kaput it ended up getting replaced with another DeWalt. That was $100 to create a similar looking radio, just with a working power knob.

      I always thought the big draw of those job site radios was you can run them off the same rechargeable batteries as the rest of your tools so you eventually make your money back in all the D cells you haven't had to buy for the cash converters boom box.

    A taxi and shuttle company I drove for had two 2005 Express vans. They were 3500s with the 6.0 LS. One had a pretty good exhaust leak, so it sounded pretty good when you put your foot in it.
    The other van would death wobble if you hit pretty much any bump. By the time I was ready to quit that job, I'd tell alarmed passengers that, "we'll be okay as long as the tie rods don't snap." I wonder how much business my boss lost because of me...

    I bought a 2001 Ford E150 working in New York (would love to let you drive it) at 21 years old. I’m 23 now, we’re a few weeks shy of two years with her. It’s moved me from Alabama to Georgia, been my home on tour with my band, came up to Philly with me for nothing more than fun this year (COVID crisis makes off days very boring for traveling workers these days) I don’t use it as a work van except in the sense that my band tours with it but it has become such an integral part of my friend group, life, identity really. It’s the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned and it’s been there for me more than any other material item I think I’ve ever owned. I love big momma.
    Once you’ve owned a van and loved a van another car will never be the same. When I’m home now I daily an 07 Volvo S40 and I love it in a very different way. Nothing will ever replace big momma. Keep loving vans, van dads.

    My dad used a 1998 Ford Escort Zx2 as his work vehicle for a couple years, using it to haul tools and bandsaws and whatever else he needed to haul in it
    That Zx2 was supposed to become mine but I can't drive stick so I ended up with the 2006 Scion xB that he had started using as a work vehicle instead because he bought a Savana

    Great video guys!
    But you missed some of the coolest oddball things about these vans
    The rear doors can open a full 180° to allow it to back right up to a loading dock
    It had the largest magnesium casting in a vehicle behind the dash, helping to reduce body flex, and these were one of the best selling vehicles GM ever had (but was still quite a ways back from the amount of Econoline vans that Ford sold)
    Oh and the Vortec insignia does make quite a bit of difference. It refers to the cylinder heads (GM did this to all its V8 and the 4.3 V6 in the 90s)
    Vortec heads are a much better flowing head than the regular heads on these engines.
    For example the 350 gained 50 HP with the Vortec heads
    The 454 (7.5L) big block was the last of the old school engines to be fitted with Vortec heads and pushed it to 290 HP, and that was I believe 1996 if memory serves me right lol.
    GM kept using the Vortec nomenclature for years and used them on the LS based engines, but at the point it was nothing more than just a name.
    (Haha yeah I have faaar too much general knowledge of 90s vehicle lol)

    You nailed it. Same color, same year, same interior, same broken side-door handle. It's the very van I spent my formative years loading furniture in and out of for my dad's one-man antique business. It's the van we took on family road trips, and took to Home Depot for gardening supplies. It paid the mortgage, and paid my tuition.
    At 20 years old and 240,000mi, it burns oil like a 2-stroke, the AC hasn't worked in a decade, and the vent controls are stuck on "defrost". The old man was going to scrap the van when he retired, but I gave him a grand for it... Sometimes you just need a clapped-out van to do a job. That's what an Express is for.

  • @acronus

    My father is a semi-retired upholsterer that has his own business. He's owned 3 vans. A 76 Dodge Tradesman, an 87 GMC Vandura, and a 99 Chevy express, and the express is a former passenger van with the rear two benches removed. He left the first bench seat in because it sometimes did double duty as a family vehicle/towing a camper.
    This story hits home, even the bit about the thrift store radio. Dad needed a new stereo for his workshop, so I put one together for him out of parts from the thrift shop, $20.
