Actually, Vampire Survivors is also a "clone" itself, Magic Survival was the inspiration, a mobile game. Thought it changed a LOT progression wise (for the worse for me...) these past few months...

This video got me to finally play vampire survivors, a game that somehow never came up on my radar when it was more popular. And man! It’s so fun. As a college student who only ever has her laptop at any given moment and has odd 45 minute sections between classes and stuff, it’s so great. Thanks boss

Slay the Spire and all similar titles that have a RNG based drafting mechanic forces players to think differently. Instead of starting a run and saying "I'm going for x build" you have to take a step back and improvise. Which choice will give you the most power for x circumstance. At the beginning of a run, you need raw sustain, whether it be enough health to tank hits or enough damage to wipe things out before they get to you, you need something to handle the trash. Once that's settled, you start seeking your elite and boss killers. These won't do much during normal waves/enemies but when the big boss comes out, it just melts. It's a completely different mindset from most games with builds and theorycrafting. The problem Rogue Genesia has is not actually "bad rng" it's the lack of interesting options early game and the fact that late game you now have too many options for rng to favor you. Many games of this type are experimenting with a sort of favor system. Example being if you start building a lot of attack speed, you see more weapons that benefit from that high attack speed.

    • @carsonroach-howell6945
      @carsonroach-howell6945 ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed. This is a super hard balance to strike though, and it's why Slay the Spire is still the GOAT of the genre.

Shout out to Snake RX, the OG rogue-like synergy-focused auto-battler! Still beats out the other games I've played even though it has a relatively small amount of concept.
Rogue: Genesia seems super interesting and definitely going on my list. On this one I must say I felt the way about Vampire Survivors that you did about R:G. Once you have all of the upgrades it becomes very difficult to lose and on many stages you can reach the point where you can basically AFK 15 minutes in. The strategy also doesn't go much further than "get matching items" for the most part which is okay because strategy isn't really the point of the game.
Brotato I've also been enjoying even though the style is less charming. Your point about feeling like you aren't getting the items you need is actually a positive for me. Part of what makes roguelike games such as Slay the Spire so replayable and enjoyable for me is that you can't always get the items you want, you have to play the hand you are dealt. Sometimes it feels like a run is unwinnable and sometimes it truly is, but most of the time if you weighed your options carefully it actually is winnable if you don't get caught up on trying to force a certain kind of build. In Vampire Survivors you can basically force it to give you the exact items you want every time and the variety really comes from trying to complete all of the challenges.
Anyways, good video but unfortunately it's not Elden Ring related so I will have to hit you with a dislike and unsubscribe and report the video for infringing my rights.

Played everything on this list save for Her Name is Fire, very briefly:
-Rogue: Genesia is pretty good once the builds click and you have enough unlocks + meta progression. Only flaw I feel is the WILD variance in build viability, which will likely be fixed later on when all weapons have Evolutions (many of the common weapons without evolution just cannot compete with the legendary rarity weapons that do have them).
-Brotato is alright, not got much to say about it. I feel it loses out a bit for how much of a run is picking up small-to-middling % bonuses to stats. Better than 80%+ of games in this micro-genera, anyway.
-Soulstone does not feel good at the higher difficulty modifiers, it breaks under the strain of how much bullshit is on screen and how spongy enemies get. Baffling choices abound, like most dot effects feel unless past Curse Tier 2 with how they do flat rather than % damage and enemy/boss health scales waaaaaay past their ability to do anything. It kinda feels like it needs more meta-progression overall to compensate for how nuts numbers get later, but idk if there's any fixing the chaos - what's the point of ground damage indicators when you're plastering the screen in multiple layers of them? This is all a shame because I feel like there's some really cool ideas and spell effects, and the boss attack patterns are neat when, you know, you don't have six bosses firing everything them have at you on screen at the same time.
-20 Minutes Till Dawn is the real deal, maybe the best on the list. Like Rogue: Genesia it can take a few runs to click with builds and viability, but man oooohhh man, when you know what to do it makes you feel like a GOD, like you've taken apart a game that was bullying you and gave it a thrashing. Very satisfying to have a build work and beat another tier of the difficulty prog. And best of all, level upgrades in a run are CHUNKY, either BIG % boosts or entirely new attack patterns and effects, and sometimes you get benefits AND drawbacks that further crystalize a build's uniqueness. No piddly +2% Attack Speed shit here!
-Boneraiser Minions: VERY good but I feel it has more Auto-Battler DNA than Vampire Survivors DNA. Updates are coming FAST with this one, I feel like we get a new class with entirely new builds and play-styles every other week.
    ----------------
A few more not mentioned in the video:
-Spellbook Demonslayers: Middling to Decent. Does some interesting things in meta-progression, main drawbacks are I feel a lot of attack patterns and weapons just don't click, no matter what I do. Suffers a little from "small +% levelups". Oh, and it has an ATROCIOUS meta-gaming thing during a run where you have a merchant that can spawn and as one of the guaranteed offers he will trade you unique, merchant-exclusive patterns/weapons for whatever current pattern/weapon you have at the lowest level. This is an issue because when bosses die the chests they drop will have random levelups for one or two weapons. Meaning, if your strat makes you want to dump a *specific* weapon at the merchant, it is optimal to avoid all boss chests until you do so. I do not feel the game should be encouraging this kind of meta-play but who knows, maybe others enjoy it...
-Spirit Hunters: Infinite Horde: Avoid. I don't know how, I don't know what: there's not a single weapon or pattern I enjoy using in this game. It's baffling. Also it feels slooooow... Good production values, wretched design.
-Crimson Dawn: Middling offering, but the levelup metaprogression is neat. Current last map feels poorly balanced. Still very under-cooked.
-Void Scrapers: I wish I could turn off the background effect because something about it is hard to look at for me. Bleh.
-Bio Prototype: I wanted to love this game but it is feels Eurojank as fuuuuuck. Those who know, know. Probably an avoid, for most.

We are starting to call the genre "bullet heaven" now. It's shorter than "Vampire Survivors-like" or "Reversed bullet hell" as I heard some say... I think what moves it ahead of most of the pack for me is that there's a decent variety in mechanics and skills. Way, way too many of these games, even the good ones, are just outright copying the skills from VS, which are very dull to begin with for the most part. Seeing a weapon that fires only left and right is a dead giveaway.

I ended up leaving Soulstone Survivors while trying to unlock the Deathknight. Beating a map with Curse rank 4 requires getting the abilities that optimally fit your play style. Unfortunately for me, for 30 straight attempts, RNGesus had declared lubrication to be anathema.
I did love Boneraiser Minions for a few months straight. I'll likely return to it after a few more updates.
Beautiful Mystic Survivors is straight-up a Vampire Survivors clone. It has some minor additions, like branching evolutions and level-up rarities, but 99% of its DNA is wholesale Vampire Survivors.

    - Where's _Nomad Survival_ ‽ 🤦 It's the first and MOST VS-like game of all. And unlike a lot of other games, it doesn't pretend to "require" newer systems, so it can run on older machines, making it more accessible (its performance is even better than _VS_ itself, even when the screen is filled with sprites). The only problem I have with it is new levels get trickled out over a long time.
    - _Bounty of One_ isn't bad either.
    - _Boneraiser Minions_ is pretty good, but you'll quickly get all of the items and spells and end up with nothing left but waiting for the random drops to get the remaining items in the necropedia (or have to wait for an update with more stuff).
    - 18:42 Agreed; some VS-like games are too simple, too basic while others are too bloated. It's a fine line, a balance.

I am really glad that you agree soulstone survivors isn't that great, I really only think it's popular because it has good graphics. I have played a ton of these types of games and the one that has gotten the most hours out of me is Brotato, so that should say something. I'm looking forward to the evolution of this genre and seeing more games with unique spins on it like Brotato. A clone of VS with a few differences isn't good enough imo.

Starting with "these games are actually good"
Proceeds with "this piece of shit is bad and this one I didn't even played"
    Nice work (not).

Excuse me? Which one did I call bad piece of shit? Because I didn't. Not even close. And I played every game in this video.

Ok but Hentai Survivors seems interesting

Vampire Survivors wasn't the first of its genre and its a genre these games fit in....they aren't copy paste thus not clones. They take quite unique takes compared to Vampire Survivors. Bullet Heavens. Stop abusing the "x game clone" terminology that is lazy, incorrect, and discredits other games of the genre.

@@ingeniousclown in fact my comment was directed at the title. The title doesn't magically change by listening to the video. The title is still the title.
