This is a lesson I learned the hard way when working on cars the continuity or resistance check on your meter is useless for verifying wire integrity. Always test the circuit under full load!
The wire was probably crimped to the connector by a few strands of wire which is why it ohmed out good under the very low current the meter was passing but when under load the voltage drop through the wire went through the roof.

Just was dealing with a 1948 buick today. Radio wasn't working. Trouble was where fuse holder was crimped. The crimp went bad, the end got hot which transfered into the fuse which in turn burned out the fuse. Didn't make a video of the repair but I did get to go for a ride in this classic and did make a video of that. What a beautiful old car. All original was bought new over in Europe in 1948. Has a metric speedo which makes it as rare as hens teeth over on this side of the pond as NA was still using imperial measurements back then.

That was bizarre Dave. I nearly scratched my head bald! I kept thinking about Scotty's saying, 'Ye, canna change he laws of physics'.

It is indeed a 6-head VCR.

It is. Don't know what they are. 2 sp, 2 ep, 2 special effects?

@@12voltvids, I have a couple of these V3 Pro Drum VCR’s. One is in my rack system an M784. They allow you to record in SLP but offer an improved PQ as if you recorded in SP mode. I got more recordings, 6 hrs, on my HIFI tapes as I did a lot of time shifting of my programs. The slow speed looked less noisy too; since it’s been a long time, probably mid 90’s when I bought them from a PCRichards electronics store. I still have my 5 VCR’s, one is a HD S VHS Mitsubishi HD2000U, that bad boy has very expensive and heavy tapes by Mitsubishi.

Interesting fault, good thing it was found before sledgehammer :D
Brought in my mind a problem I had in one of my previous cars. Ground cable between transmission and body showed continuity, but still there was problems, for example radio played only "white noise" and something killed the digital clock on the dash permanently, also ground problem probably played a part in blowing the ignition module, twice during 100 km range.
Turned out the connection to the transmission case was badly corroded, so I guess it couldn't carry enough current. After I fixed that, radio started working and car never fried the ignition module again. Digital clock was gone though, never got to fix that, well the radio display had clock anyway.
Saw also great demonstration of this at Diagnose Dan channel, again, corroded connection showed continuity, but it couldn't carry current, and fault was found by load testing the circuit using test light :)

Samsung mechanism with a Toshiba head drum. That head cleaning wheel looks terrible. Might have fowled the heads.

Yes. That mechanism is used in Samsung machines, Toshiba, and the Sony "N" models of VCR. It was developed by Samsung.

I use Toshibas from this era/product line exclusively for archiving because I think the picture can't be beat... but such a ridiculous quirk that they always have the counter displayed unless you turn it off with remote. I have a universal remote that is compatible enough to turn it off but it begs the question: WHAT WERE THEY THINKING??

You don't measure continuity with a circuit powered up, that's why you were getting funny results.

In case you were sleeping i had the connector unplugged and was measuring a dead wire. 0 ohms. When it was plugged in I was measuring voltage which was at one end and not the other. Dam I wish they would disable that fast forward button.

No sledgehammer? I'd want to see that, ha ha. But yeah, it's great when you can resurrect dead or sick electronics.
Edit: I'm halfway through. It's almost that the voltage is being shut off, like something is shutting it off when voltage is applied, like maybe a semiconductor? I'm just guessing, I don't know very much about electronics.

I have found more than once solder joints with hairline cracks that are almost invisible to the eye unless you can flex that part of the pcbd. Those intermittent connections are a huge PITA. When I have to really try to find them I use a 5x loupe or the microscope. Insufficient solder fillets or cold solder joints, oxidized leads can have a dewetting of solder. Get a drop of RMA flux and reflow the connections. The overseas companies that mass produce mother bds use children to do soldering and it shows, lots of flux residue and that can mask potential defects. Nobody cleans solder connections on pc bds at this price point. High end electronics, maybe.

@@12voltvids, maybe, but if you have hundreds of Hi-Fi Extra High Grade T 120 tapes from TDK, Maxell recorded at SP and SLP of movies, shows, series programs and documentaries, you would still want and need a functioning TOTL VCR, which I have. Also I’ve read that there are audiophiles that record music on their Hi-Fi tapes with incredible audio quality !
I have to dig into that, if the movies and shows are being replaced with BD & 4K BD with Dolby Atmos audio.
