There is no way that I would ever understand putting it all back together before testing, and you do it all the time :D Must be on purpose, must be! :)
I got one of these from a second hand shop for a fiver, I love it. MY daughter does too, so I found one on eBay for her. It has all the original packaging, looks unused, but does not turn on when plugged in. I dont have the tools and equipment to do this kind of repair in this vid though. Im hoping for a replacement. On another sort of related story- Years ago I worked in a TV shop for a while, the flat screens were fairly new then. An old aged pensioner lady came in and said to me and a colleague “Ive got an old Bush”. We had to stifle our smirks and I remember thinking -Its no surprise there love, you are no spring chicken.
I couldn't hold myself any longer to not comment on this, but your choice of music is hilarious and adds a great overall signature to your videos. Thanks 👍.
@@letstalkaboutcars2998 that’s genius! I’m glad I read the comments! I have a bag of ‘maybe not working’ radios to get through and at least two of them need aerial attention!
I bought a rowing machine this week for a bargain £15 as the computer wasn't working. A quick sand paper on the battery terminals and it's as good as new. Also this week, I sent an item back to Amazon due to missing accessories, and on receiving a replacement, realised I hadn't opened a small section of the packaging, containing said accessories. I'm basically living a parallel version of your life I feel.😂
During your shake and rotate and push analysis @13:56 i noticed you did forget the "have you tried hitting it"-step. Good on you it turned out not to be percussive maintenance related after all!!! Great video, thanks Steve!
To fix an antenna that’s been broken like that, I’d use a pair of needle nose and pull it up. Then I’d flatten the end and roll it over once to cover the sharp edge. Flattening it prevents it from going all the way back in and gives you something to grab to pull it up.
Ever try cleaning the tip of the iron? You got what looks like potting soil all over the tip of that soldering iron. They make a thingy out of brass wadding that's meant to clean soldering iron tips. Also wet sponges. Just wondering since the tip of your iron is always filthy and you're trying to do this intricate soldering and it appears you struggle with it at times.
Just a random design thought for pushing repairability. Imagine making something that you know could break, because all things do, even just a battery replacement. But you design it in such a way that when it is opened, it intentionally changes how it looks, making the device even more appealing looking. Maybe it has something to do with the screws, or how a panel comes off. I love the idea, just don't think any company would ever do that. Am enjoying the vid so far Steve! Keep it up
Those tactile switches are very sensitive to contamination with flux etc. fumes, which is why they can fail prematurely and often feel "soggy". I figured this out after replacing some, having them fail within weeks due to me using too much flux and then too much IPA for clean up. So I had to open it up again.

I love your videos. I always look out for a line from a song in a video and know it’s going to be your outro. We’re possibly around the same age and I drive my kids mad by saying something and knowing I can relay it back into a song from yesteryear. My dad used to do it when I was a kid back in the eighties. When soldering in things like that microswitch, since there's nothing but mask underneath, couldn't you dab a drop of CA glue on the bottom side of the switch, line it up, and then tack the solder joints in after the glue sets? Seems like it would be easier than trying to handle the alignment and soldering simultaneously.
the speaker wire looks attached when first open so it might have come loose when unscrewing wires or when you pulled the connector out by breaking the glue, either way solid fix and fun video as usual.
Yep, @1:56 you can see it attached or at least in the place it’s supposed to be while in subsequent shots it’s clearly disconnected. So probably a cold solder joint, that often happens with cheap hand soldered joints at the factory where there is no training and they don’t give a flux.
Not sure if seen correctly but in your "Aux-in" test you put it into the headphones jack? Btw the broken airial you can make into a teleskopic "magnetic screw fisihing rod". ;)
Far be it from me to offer words of wisdom to the great StezStix but get yourself a little individual glass jam jar and put a bit of IPA in it. You can lid it up when finished and you don't have to keep pouring it into the lid and spilling it over the desk. My "big" bottle only comes out once in a blue moon to top up.
We have HD Radio, but digital radio overall works a bit better in England than in the US. The entire UK is the size of Michigan, including Michigan's portion of the Great Lakes. England is a little over half of the size of the UK. Still with me? 56 million people live in England alone. Michigan is a typical state, a little bit larger and more populous than average, with 10 million people. England is half the size of Michigan with nearly six times the population. The population density in England is absurdly high compared the the US. Europe is similar. DAB works great where it exists, and everywhere you go you're likely to encounter a large number of stations. In the US in rural areas, you're lucky to have one or two analog country stations, let alone a full suite of digital choices. HD Radio isn't bad. In Detroit there is quite a bit of HD Radio variety, but not much equipment to receive these signals outside of your car. I happen to listen to HD Radio at home all the time.
It's very rare to have two faults in the component that you're trying to repair. Sometimes you just don't realize you just moved it around a little bit and that soldering was probably not the best solder job from the factory.
