I bought 4 drums that previously held motor oil. I read online that motor oil is combustible but not flammable. The drums still have a little bit of oil left in them. If a stray spark hits the oil - am I going to get blown to the moon?
Before you do this, make damn sure the old contents of the drum were not flammable. Vapors can be just as explosive as the former contents, and guys have gotten killed cutting into "empty" drums that exploded. A man in Iowa was killed welding on top of an empty drum, using it as a workbench. Filling old barrels with water before cutting can displace explosive vapors, if done correctly.
It's common sense to rinse before grinding or welding like what you said the guy welding?????? Just hire someone for your DIY if you don't have common sense????? Is that clear - again don't do anything coz anywhere is Dangerous now adays - impt I don't recommend to anyone without common sense....
@@karellwilliford1985 from what I can see, he used what I have from Harbor Freight. It is a 4 1/2 inch Flap Disc for a small grinder with a 5/8 inch arbor. If you have the same grinder as Angelsum143, then just get a 4 1/2" x 5/8 Zirconia Flap Disc 40 grit disc (40 is rough enough to do the job) around $7.49 at Harbor Freight.
Would this work of a USA made 55 gallon OIL DRUM? They look more like a crimp or pressed over the edge to create a lip, rather that a spot weld seam along the top. Anyone kno with certainty?
Just did it and worked perfect. I love TH-camrs like this. Thanks
Thanks you

@@Angelsum143 Not sure what your point is. People think the drum isn't dangerous because it's empty, but even vapors are enough to explode.
@jshepard152 anything is Dangerous my point is don't do it if you don't have common sense for your safety.....
@@Angelsum143 👍
@@Angelsum143so if u wash it out with water and detergant ,will that be sufficient after 2 wrinces ?
Have you tried to use a lever locking lid on a steel barrel after removing the old lid? Does it work?

I'm removing lid here in Washington I think part of US
besides the location aspect of my question, any other idea regarding that pressed lip vs seam question? @@Angelsum143
