We burn paper, cardboard, wood scraps, and such in an old dryer drum. My grandparents burned everything in a barrel just like you have. Occasionally they would take out what didn’t burn and would bury it in the back of their property. They lived out in the country and back then there were no garbage pickup. Thanks for sharing. Renee P good old days , we try not to burn anything that non burnable but I just dump the ashes out before I use it again. Works really well , wish I had gone over the drum more
My life today. I put the grease I drain off my ground beef in the burn barrel. I don't have garbage pick up for my trash and don't drive.
I learned about burying your garbage the hard way. Bought a little house out in the countryside and the previous owner was a burier. Spent the whole first summer excavating his sht… worst part is our area has trash service, he was just too cheap to pay it. learned real quick country folk don’t care about the environment or what they leave behind to future generations. There’s no excuse to bury trash
I burn all of my cardboard's in my burn barrel too. Good on you for sharing the story of your friend as part of the safety class needed. Way to many people feeling safe around burn barrels.
To be honest I plan on getting flake for burning trash since I figured people would roast me for doing . I happy to know I'm not the only one , thanks
why are you being lazy? if its cardboard just cut it down into small pieces. you will be shocked how many cut up boxes you can fit in a recycle bin and how quickly you can cut them down
Sounds Like those poor couple needed M4A (Medicare For All) Just like they have in Canada ;-) Your workplace shouldn't be in the business of providing healthcare... They already have way too much power over us as it is... ;-)
@@GBooneoh could also process them for bricks. Could use em in your stove or fireplace, or just sell em. Just gotta make sure there are no additives like certain inks or plastic tapes

We had a burn barrel the whole time I was growing up. Took cans and such to a recycle place. We used gasoline too
I live in a residential area, but still burn yard waste, cardboard and personal papers that I would otherwise shred and take to the landfill.
I use old motor oil as an accelerant, and I have garden hose, shovel, and rake at the ready
Could not think of a better way to put vent holes in the burn drum!! 😁

Why use an accelerant? Paper products will light just as easy with a torch. For that matter just about anything will light with a torch
Because it will help it burn longer
I had a co-worker forget to discharge his static at the Acetone tank , I saw a glow on the wall and he had no beard .

I try to recycle what I can also but there are times and situations where what I have can't be recycled, reused or burning gas in a vehicle to take to the landfill (long distance) would pollute more. You are so right to caution safety. Things can get out of hand quickly and when they do you often have seconds (if that) to respond. I'm so glad your friends recovered. ~Sherrie in South Carolina

I don't burn trash but I will burn up any/all sensitive documents (of which I accumulate quite a bit) because every shredder I've bought failed after a few months of use. No matter how good the reviews were and no matter how small the stack of paper I shredded, the motor would burn out long before the year was over. So, for that reason alone, I use a burn barrel with a screen filter over the top to catch any burning embers. Also, I use a small amount of torch oil instead of gas or diesel.
Yeah I stay away from using gas for sure

Silly question. When I cut grass, I have a bag on the back of my mower. I usually throw the grass in the back of my yard but honestly I’m tired of it. Would I be able to burn grass in a barrel? Silly question but this is my first time owning a house and I would like some feedback/safety tips before I buy a burn barrel.
Burning grass would be really smoky and often to wet to burn. But heres what I used to do when I dumped grass.
Buy cheap high nitrogen fertilizer then when you dump your grass pour a layer of fertilizer down between layers. This breaks down the grass quick and makes great compost dirt for you spring gardening projects 👍
I always start my burn barrel with sticks and I only burn sticks lmao
How about old pine straw? Is that safe to put in a burn barrel?
Living in rural areas we often don't have access to recycling outfits. All of my paper products get incinerated. Although I prefer bottled beer, I buy cans which are recyclable in our area.
Bearpaw Timber I buy cans too and if the fire hit enough the can burn down but I bring them to town instead

Are these safe to use on bare dirt ground or do they have to be used on concrete?
Dirts works just avoid burning on windy days
Done it for years when I was a kid it get rids of it alot sooner than a land fill

Honestly wish I could burn here. Growing up we could. We had trash and recycle pick up but burning sure helped if some thing was bulky or in the way.
Yeah if Only If we had recycling that would be nice but burning is so much easier

You are missing a very, very important step in your video: showing your audience how your barrel got all those holes. :-) Excellent story about the gasoline. My dad always told me, never, ever start a fire with gasoline. People simply can't get their heads around the vapor danger. "If you can't see it, it can't hurt you, right?" Great video! Just bought a $30 barrel from Rural King today. Kimble's trash guy kept skipping us week after week so I stopped paying and there's no other company who services my area.
HI! Um, a little help please? I literally need the Dummy's guide to burning tumbleweeds. We had crazy wind yesterday and now my elderly neighbor and I have a 6x12 foot drift of them then there's all the various scattered ones. I can literally fit 2 in a trash can so disposing of 6 a week leaves a big fire hazard sitting there for months. I have someone coming to give me an estimate to haul them away but I don't have much money to spare so if it's more than $100 I'm going to have to buy a burn barrel and do it myself. I'm terrified of burning my house down and as fast as they burn I'm still afraid this will take weeks... any ideas? Any advice? I know to have it 6 feet from the house and I'll have the garden hose ready, is it really that simple?
I do t really have an answer but I do know people sell tumble weeds and make money doing so

I was thinking about getting a burn barrel to burn grass, compost, and small tree limbs. Could I use all that to burn down together. Use it in my garden to grow vegetables?
Also to add grass clippings. I don’t think I would need fuel to get it started.
Grass would be tough but I would compost grass and use burn the sticks then use the ash in you compose or garden for a awesome soil mixture. Just remember to add a little fertilizer to you grass compose so it breaks down faster. Also keep it away from you home to reduce risk of fire and smell. Composting grass gets really hot some times

Gettin’ hot! It’s tough when you can’t get all you need to burn in there at once. I don’t use accelerant when burning household trash. As long as it’s not terribly wet it should take off. And yes.. if all you have is gas, just don’t burn that day, not worth the risk. 😬
What about lighter fluid? I am burning mostly cardboard......forc20 years , I had an open burn about 6' across...poured lots of diesel, then a splash of gas for ignition...burned big for 10 minutes, then low and slow for about 3 hours
12 ga. Ventilation in a burn Barrel is the best way on a metal drum.

We have no burn rules in the city but we live in a county pocket which we have to pay more for as it is. My Daddy burned our trash all his life. I've been trying to get a barrel for years. I worked in a factory for almost 30yrs. We used to use "pigs", big zinc melts, in the trunk for weight. That place is long closed now and my bros are not helping me get one. Brats. Lol. I don't see the problem with burning certain things like cardboard. They have CRAPTONS to recycle and never get caught up. And you can use woodash on plants and things. Garbage here is doubled yet half the time they don't pick it up. Goes up every billing period. Recycling is only twice a month. Way not enough for us. We don't have a car so alot of food comes in boxes. Boxes. Ugh. Old papers. I wouldn't burn everything like my Daddy because we were way out in the boonies. You want to throw out an old mattress? They want $30 extra! It's ridiculous. They double our water and sewer as well. But our taxes are supposed to be less. They are not. They want $300 a year for a library card everyone in city gets free. And we are right in the middle of this stupid place! My grandkids all graduated from high school here. We shop here. Put more in than others incorporated do. I want to use it as a grill sort of too. You CAN do that. My daughter's ex left 2 charcoal grills and a smoker that are trash for us the ahole. Think maybe I could burn in one of them for awhile? Here's a funny for you...one time my Daddy found my stash and burned it in that barrel. OMG. I came home and he was 3 sheets in the wind! Stoned out of his mind. I was 16 and stupid lol. But all 5 of us kids had to get Dad outta that barrel! He was having way too much fun. He also burned my uniforms once. They didn't charge me because he was legally blind by then from diabetes so they let it pass. He was mortified but I couldn't get mad at him. Too precious. We lost him almost 30yrs ago and Mom just on this Easter. Covid made it impossible for us to be near her the whole last year. Even when she passed. Sorry. TMI. Got carried away. Thanks for the vid. I’ve burnt trash for almost 40 years and never needed to use any accelerants. Why waste the fuel and risk the danger?
I stopped once I got my family from putting wet trash products in.

I have a recycling plastic granulator and screen mesh is use
to filter dirt from plastic melt and overtime, this screen gets
clogged up and the only solution is to burn the screen with plastic
melt in it..

Who wouldn’t want to burn their trash??? I mean who would look down on you doing that? Makes no sense whatsoever to me.
