Just want to mention the Torpedoes in this game, I know I said it has none but that is because I don't count decoys as torpedoes even though they are called torpedoes in this game, you can clearly see I have a lot of them when I check inside Rabbits locker :) A Torpedo for me is a high explosive warhead not something that beeps and whizzes off to the surface luring monsters.
There are torpedoes in the game. The Seamoth and the PRAWN suit can fire torpedoes after you craft the required upgrade. There are several types including gas torpedoes that do damage to enemies when you shoot them. Literally a quick google search and you can figure this shit out.
Rift is lighter, has the better controllers, and is cheaper but will require three to four USB sockets. Vive is good too, same visuals, but is more expensive. Both can track large scale rooms now.... you may have to buy a third sensor for the Oculus Rift... but it will still be cheaper than a Vive. Either one is great honestly. I like the Rift for the comfort and controls. I have played with multiple VR headsets over the past two years and it really is the best way to experience a game.

Yeah, just like in Alien Isolation, or the breakable weapons in Breath of the Wild. It's deliberate to make you be resourceful using the environment rather than simply shooting everything.

people said the same thing about don't starve, terraria, the long dark... I've bought all of those hoping they were the exception to my dislike of survival games and none have entertained me. So I'm not sure if want to risk my money again.
This is in my top 5 favorite games of all time! It's so damn good. I'm so glad they didn't add weapons. The reason this game is so good is because you're always the prey and if they would have give u a one hit kill weapon it would be such a lame game and ruin the immersion in my opinion, thank you for not spoiling too much! And I agree 100% about this game not needing coop, it's just not one of those games

I strongly disagree about guns in the game, I think it is done by purpose It make you feel inferior to the world around you it is what makes this game different to so many other survival games. You are not the Apex predator nor will you be and I for one think it is great.
Vik i really agree with this, think its an integral part of the whole design. No matter how far you get you constantly feel like a small fish in a big ocean filled with big monster trying to tear you apart and it creates real fear and tention every time you get out in water. 🙂
Exactly my thought too, you just can't go everywhere killing everything you want. Even when you are inside a cyclopse you need to run when you hear a sound. It's scary and fun, totally different from any other game
White Walker Like other games are "fun" becuase they have guns. Yet this game isn't filled with all that crap yet so many people like it, why is that you ask becuase the game is just that good. Bringing in weapons wouldn't only destroy the experience and litteraly destroy the ecosystem in the game but most people will hate on it becuase they didn't want this and it will ruin the game. The funny part is people that are asking to have weapons becuase they think it's neccesary, trust me once the devs actually put guns in the game you'll really see how hard of an impact is on the gameplay and style. It will ruin it for everyone, that's why the devs don't even think about it which i'm glad they did and make that choice.
During the release party, they stated that one of the goals of the game was to teach the player to survive the world as it is and not let them reshape it in their own way, so no eradication of species, not all resource nodes respawn, and no more terraforming.
I remember playing this the first time, I looked down from the top of the waters surface down like 100 meters and it made me feel very uneasy, like tunnel vision. I have never experienced that in a game before, absolutely amazing!
Your review pushed me to buy this game. I can honestly say this was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've had. I'm not much into the survival genre, but the way your tech developments are pushed along by your discoveries and story progress was a very cool take on things. My only complaint is that I'm finished and I need to find something else to scratch this itch..

Correction: You said there are no other weapons than a knife. In the game you also have vortex torpedoes and “Hitler torperoes” (gas torpedoes). You can attach them to your seamoth via the moon pool. But true, i would like more weapons like harpoon guns.
NON-STORY SPOILER: From the Wiki: "The Gas Torpedo is an item used as ammunition for the Seamoth's Torpedo System, and the Prawn Suit Torpedo Arm for the Prawn Suit. It fires the gas from the Gas Pods, creating a damaging cloud of poison."
Vortex torpedo isn't lethal. It forms a whirlpool/implodes, sucking in fish then flinging them far away. Gas torpedo does damage over time in an area. There are more weapons tbf. The propulsion cannon allows you to slam medium fish against walls etc, and the mech suit allows you to punch them to death or drill them to death with the mining drill arm. Plenty of lethal weapons, you just have to find them. No harpoon guns (which is weird since the fabricator analyses the environment around you to determine what you need to survive (hence why it enables you to build fins and oxygen tanks) so spear fishing should make sense to be in the game, and you'd only be able to kill small fish and stalkers etc with it anyway). Well the pda makes it clear that no weapons are allowed since some massacre happened because of them, and a harpoon can be quite a lethal weapon to humans.The knife is an exception since it's not dangerous enough for a massacre, unless multiple people start fabricating them to kill people.
There was a pda quote that says there was a massacre and the knife is allowed because it is a survival basic and also stasis a propulsion cannons are allowed because they are non lethal
The dev explained on twitter that the reason he didn't include guns in the game is because there was was 'too much gun violence already' in America after Sandy Hook or something like that. Yup...
they also explained that it was more about exploration and encounter, and that you co exist with its ecosystem and are there to save it not destroy it.
That was one devs opinion. Guns are present in the game all over, especially when it comes to the precursors. You see one getting used, and see two other handheld ones in display cases. The actual decision was made to change gameplay. Running from creatures and having ways to delay is a new experience. That and thier last game was an FPS. Im sure they got bored of it.
I can't explain how important to me it was to go into this completely blind. I did NOT know what this game was, but how glad I am I experienced it. One of my favorite gaming experiences.
Nice review, but I'm not sure I agree with the idea of adding more weapons... The thing about the leviathans is that they are genuinely terrifying, just hearing the roar (which can be heard almost a biome away at times) always gets your attention and sets your pulse a little higher. Exploring the deep dark abyss in search of rarer resources just to find a crabsquid or a warper show up always turns on the flight or fight feeling. The fact that you have a stasis rifle and a knife should be enough, let alone the propulsion cannon (which can be upgraded into the repulsion cannon, which broadcasts a widely unstood message of "piss off." in many languages for the smaller to mid sized predators). If there is a bad guy, you can freeze them and get stabbing and hope there's enough time before the freeze runs out. Furthermore if you use a heated blade when stabbing them, it scares off most mid sized predators - so that only leaves the most vicious and enormous monsters that can resist your best efforts to fight them. If you've never run from a leviathan, then you've missed the point of the mystery of the abyss... It's not horror, it's terror.
I agree with you on the weapons. As it was I became a terror of the shallows, chasing after Tiger Sharks and Stalkers and hacking them to death with my knife for daring to try and eat me. I seriously wished I could teach some of the larger fish the error of their ways and the power of technology. But I understand that if that happened it would have no longer been about survival and more of a combat sim.
I would say the replayability is strong because the feeling of progress doesn't fade when you make a new game. I love starting out with just the basic titanium to finally being able to go further away from the lifepod and collecting more and more rare resources. Of course the best would be if you could feel the game as if you were playing it for the first time over and over, but the feeling of progress doesn't go away so at least there's that.
I do wish they'd give us atleast a 2 player mode, i could see limiting it to that many sense that's how many seats are in the life pod that doesn't immediately die but there's room for more, Life pods, 1, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, and 18 (plus 20 and up) are unaccounted for on a s hip of 159 people. So there's room for atleast a mode that oculd go up to maybe 4 players having life pod 8 survive or up to 8 plays using 5, 8, 11, and 16 make it a varied survivor rate that landed in the safe shallows. Admittedly it might be because people are naturally going to want to dismantle life pods or be able to lock life pods to bases so there are reasons to not. but it's still something they could do and i feel maybe should.
Quick answer: Hell Yes! Best game of 2018. The "No Guns" aspect was a specific design decision by the developers. I does change the gameplay which is great. We didn't need another FPS, just under water.
Food and water is easy to get once you get some tech. the water thing gives water and salt, get a biom for fish and they will breed. just put peepers in though and you can suppliment a area for harvesting potatoes and fruits.
Got it from the Epic Launcher for free and had it on my wishlist for long. Fired up my Rift, hopped in, was lost because it throws you in the story and infuriated by the bad bad performance. A week later I tinkered around, googled and found out that you can massively increase the performance by lowering your mirrored display while being in VR. Set it to 1280x720 in a window and reduced the quality drastically. Pumped the quality in VR mode up a ton and it made a SIGNIFICANT difference. Still awful interface in VR - googled around, found a Mod for it to fix ALL the bad VR issues - PDA too close, no animations and blackout-screens when entering or exiting your subs etc. Started a new game and voilá - I got fire in the escape pod. The Fire extinguisher makes sense! The red warnings in the pod make sense! Now I see how I enter and exit the ships, climb ladders and stuff. Only gripe that remains is the shite called quick slots. You need to switch to KB & Mouse to bind it. Renaming lockers and beacons is still a massive PITA - shame on the devs that they won't fix it and that Modders need to step in to fix their VR-issues. Otherwise: Awesome game

Unknown Worlds are some of my favorite devs, and if you've never got the chance to experience their previous game, Natural Selection 2, it's one of the greatest sci-fi FPS's ever made. Based on an original mod for Half-Life called Natural Selection, it's an asymmetrical shooter that incorporates some light RTS elements like a commander and base building, research, giving units commands and things like health and armor, etc..It's my all-time favorite game and also involves a fair amount of old school shooter movement. I highly recommend you check it out at some point, even for a retro review or just to play it for yourself. It's largely dead but has a small, dedicated community that is always playing.
The search for food and water stops when you have 2 water filtration machines and an alien containment unit full of Reginalds :D Cured food and drink for days!
and as for grinding for food and water, you can get a machine which makes water, you can also plant food ... once you become self sufficient in your base and you have your cyclops (the big sub) going around it's fine. there feels like theres a grind sometimes but really it's not that bad and it's fun and tbh if you know how to play you won't find it difficult
At first glance this reminded me of Sub Culture, a terrific game from way back in 1997 that I remember so fondly. For year I have been waiting for someone to develop something similar. I really wish they would have taken a queue from sub culture and had different civilizations you could interact with, buy and sell stuff and take sides in sub wars
IT HAS TORPEDOES that you can craft in the modification station in the moon pool, there are gas torpedoes and normal torpedoes and normal torpedoes explode on impact creating a huge underwater vortex, how did you not notice that???
Subnautica is an interesting survival game that has a pretty linear storyline but highly encourages exploration and discovery. There's atmosphere to the game and lots of hidden data logs and such to help with the deeper parts of the lore, even if you just go into the game, explore a bit and complete the story the wiki for the game details the entire lore in-depth. The gameplay mechanics are really crisp and the UI is very easy to understand.
When I finally bought and played the game I regretted that I have watched my brother play the game during early Access. Hell even he was disappointed that he didn't wait till the game was released. Which is why both of us are avoiding every Information about Below Zero. We want to experience it first hand.
Excellent review Mack, I picked this up yesterday for free but wanted to see what you had to say before downloading it. Just an update, they made a new mode called "Freedom", which is survival but without having to deal with hunger or thirst.
Something did happen yes, a thing attached to my face and said "What are you" it happened again later and said "Come with me" or something, clearly I swam away :)

I've got over 150 hours into Subnautica over the last 2 years, definitely recommend the game. Love it! Agree, they need more optimization. No reason why my new monster PC with a 1800x, 32gb ram and a 1080 gets any amount of popping.
February 2019 and we still don't have decent render distances, and we still have lag when surfacing after a deep dive. But at least it is a fantastic game to play :D
Yes and that's a shame. This game could be one of the best of all time if it was playable. I wish it was remade in another engine. But it wouldn't feel the same so idk.
2 years later and I eventually got around to playing it. I am in love with it, so immersive and so much fun. I haven't had this much fun in a survival game since I played Minecraft in 2011.
This is easily one of the best VR experiences I have had along with Elite Dangerous. It is just so immersive. The game does not support Vive wands or Oculus Touch controllers so you have to use KB/M or a gamepad.... but it is still amazing. A shining example of how a game should go from Early Access to release.
this is one of those rare gems that only comes around a couple times a year if you're lucky. if you even though a bit about getting this game, I say "do it" just "do it"

Every one of your videos always has a moment I will always remember. For example, Dark Souls 3, I bought the game 1 minute and 8 seconds into the review online! After purchasing, I continued with the review super excited about how amazing it was going to be and laughed my head off when it was dubbed 'a pile of pi**' (which I agree with). Hey guys, already played the early access 1 year ago ,but the thing is that i never saw more than than the safe bay area and and a little bit of the alien island (so never deeper than 100m,never seen lava zone or any other) .Should i still buy it ?
I really hope they develop VR controller support for this...I hate the idea of using a keyboard with a vive on my head but I really think itd add to the immersion being able to stretch out and grab things...kind of like star shelter which is essentially this but in space and in VERY early access.
This game looks like a lot of fun and relaxing...my issues is that I HATE the ocean. My worst nightmare is being in the ocean not seeing land anywhere in the darkness of night...that alone makes me feel like i'd panic playing this game lol.

No harpoon guns (which is weird since the fabricator analyses the environment around you to determine what you need to survive (hence why it enables you to build fins and oxygen tanks) so spear fishing should make sense to be in the game, and you'd only be able to kill small fish and stalkers etc with it anyway).

Well the pda makes it clear that no weapons are allowed since some massacre happened because of them, and a harpoon can be quite a lethal weapon to humans.The knife is an exception since it's not dangerous enough for a massacre, unless multiple people start fabricating them to kill people.
There was a pda quote that says there was a massacre and the knife is allowed because it is a survival basic and also stasis a propulsion cannons are allowed because they are non lethal

The dev explained on twitter that the reason he didn't include guns in the game is because there was was 'too much gun violence already' in America after Sandy Hook or something like that. Yup...
they also explained that it was more about exploration and encounter, and that you co exist with its ecosystem and are there to save it not destroy it.

That was one devs opinion. Guns are present in the game all over, especially when it comes to the precursors. You see one getting used, and see two other handheld ones in display cases. The actual decision was made to change gameplay. Running from creatures and having ways to delay is a new experience. That and thier last game was an FPS. Im sure they got bored of it.

Nice review, but I'm not sure I agree with the idea of adding more weapons... The thing about the leviathans is that they are genuinely terrifying, just hearing the roar (which can be heard almost a biome away at times) always gets your attention and sets your pulse a little higher. Exploring the deep dark abyss in search of rarer resources just to find a crabsquid or a warper show up always turns on the flight or fight feeling. The fact that you have a stasis rifle and a knife should be enough, let alone the propulsion cannon (which can be upgraded into the repulsion cannon, which broadcasts a widely unstood message of "piss off." in many languages for the smaller to mid sized predators). If there is a bad guy, you can freeze them and get stabbing and hope there's enough time before the freeze runs out. Furthermore if you use a heated blade when stabbing them, it scares off most mid sized predators - so that only leaves the most vicious and enormous monsters that can resist your best efforts to fight them.
If you've never run from a leviathan, then you've missed the point of the mystery of the abyss... It's not horror, it's terror.

I agree with you on the weapons. As it was I became a terror of the shallows, chasing after Tiger Sharks and Stalkers and hacking them to death with my knife for daring to try and eat me. I seriously wished I could teach some of the larger fish the error of their ways and the power of technology. But I understand that if that happened it would have no longer been about survival and more of a combat sim.

I would say the replayability is strong because the feeling of progress doesn't fade when you make a new game. I love starting out with just the basic titanium to finally being able to go further away from the lifepod and collecting more and more rare resources. Of course the best would be if you could feel the game as if you were playing it for the first time over and over, but the feeling of progress doesn't go away so at least there's that.
Unless you have crippling thalassophobia, this game is one of the best games you'll ever play. A few rough spots but overall an amazing experience.
I do wish they'd give us atleast a 2 player mode, i could see limiting it to that many sense that's how many seats are in the life pod that doesn't immediately die but there's room for more, Life pods, 1, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, and 18 (plus 20 and up) are unaccounted for on a s hip of 159 people. So there's room for atleast a mode that oculd go up to maybe 4 players having life pod 8 survive or up to 8 plays using 5, 8, 11, and 16 make it a varied survivor rate that landed in the safe shallows. Admittedly it might be because people are naturally going to want to dismantle life pods or be able to lock life pods to bases so there are reasons to not. but it's still something they could do and i feel maybe should.
Quick answer: Hell Yes! Best game of 2018. The "No Guns" aspect was a specific design decision by the developers. I does change the gameplay which is great. We didn't need another FPS, just under water.

Food and water is easy to get once you get some tech. the water thing gives water and salt, get a biom for fish and they will breed. just put peepers in though and you can suppliment a area for harvesting potatoes and fruits.

Got it from the Epic Launcher for free and had it on my wishlist for long.
Fired up my Rift, hopped in, was lost because it throws you in the story and infuriated by the bad bad performance.
A week later I tinkered around, googled and found out that you can massively increase the performance by lowering your mirrored display while being in VR.
Set it to 1280x720 in a window and reduced the quality drastically. Pumped the quality in VR mode up a ton and it made a SIGNIFICANT difference.
Still awful interface in VR - googled around, found a Mod for it to fix ALL the bad VR issues - PDA too close, no animations and blackout-screens when entering or exiting your subs etc.
Started a new game and voilá - I got fire in the escape pod. The Fire extinguisher makes sense! The red warnings in the pod make sense!
Now I see how I enter and exit the ships, climb ladders and stuff.
Only gripe that remains is the shite called quick slots. You need to switch to KB & Mouse to bind it. Renaming lockers and beacons is still a massive PITA - shame on the devs that they won't fix it and that Modders need to step in to fix their VR-issues.

Unknown Worlds are some of my favorite devs, and if you've never got the chance to experience their previous game, Natural Selection 2, it's one of the greatest sci-fi FPS's ever made. Based on an original mod for Half-Life called Natural Selection, it's an asymmetrical shooter that incorporates some light RTS elements like a commander and base building, research, giving units commands and things like health and armor, etc..It's my all-time favorite game and also involves a fair amount of old school shooter movement. I highly recommend you check it out at some point, even for a retro review or just to play it for yourself. It's largely dead but has a small, dedicated community that is always playing.
The search for food and water stops when you have 2 water filtration machines and an alien containment unit full of Reginalds :D Cured food and drink for days!
Or just plant one Lantern Tree, you find early in the game.
and as for grinding for food and water, you can get a machine which makes water, you can also plant food ... once you become self sufficient in your base and you have your cyclops (the big sub) going around it's fine.
there feels like theres a grind sometimes but really it's not that bad and it's fun and tbh if you know how to play you won't find it difficult

At first glance this reminded me of Sub Culture, a terrific game from way back in 1997 that I remember so fondly. For year I have been waiting for someone to develop something similar. I really wish they would have taken a queue from sub culture and had different civilizations you could interact with, buy and sell stuff and take sides in sub wars
IT HAS TORPEDOES that you can craft in the modification station in the moon pool, there are gas torpedoes and normal torpedoes and normal torpedoes explode on impact creating a huge underwater vortex, how did you not notice that???
Also there's a multiplayer mod which currently works and is still being developed.
Subnautica is an interesting survival game that has a pretty linear storyline but highly encourages exploration and discovery. There's atmosphere to the game and lots of hidden data logs and such to help with the deeper parts of the lore, even if you just go into the game, explore a bit and complete the story the wiki for the game details the entire lore in-depth.
The gameplay mechanics are really crisp and the UI is very easy to understand.
The one game with VR mode in which the scubamask effect actually helps the immersion :D
Believe it or not, Peepers can save your life with Reapers like they do Stalkers.
Diving down deeper after upgrading your gear is always exciting.
And now we wait for a review on the DLC they plan to make.....which is probably in the arctic biome

When I finally bought and played the game I regretted that I have watched my brother play the game during early Access. Hell even he was disappointed that he didn't wait till the game was released. Which is why both of us are avoiding every Information about Below Zero. We want to experience it first hand.
Excellent review Mack, I picked this up yesterday for free but wanted to see what you had to say before downloading it. Just an update, they made a new mode called "Freedom", which is survival but without having to deal with hunger or thirst.

I've got over 150 hours into Subnautica over the last 2 years, definitely recommend the game. Love it! Agree, they need more optimization. No reason why my new monster PC with a 1800x, 32gb ram and a 1080 gets any amount of popping.

2 years later and I eventually got around to playing it. I am in love with it, so immersive and so much fun. I haven't had this much fun in a survival game since I played Minecraft in 2011.
This is easily one of the best VR experiences I have had along with Elite Dangerous. It is just so immersive. The game does not support Vive wands or Oculus Touch controllers so you have to use KB/M or a gamepad.... but it is still amazing. A shining example of how a game should go from Early Access to release.
this is one of those rare gems that only comes around a couple times a year if you're lucky. if you even though a bit about getting this game, I say "do it" just "do it"

I love to do a Hardcore playthrough once I finish the normal Survival mode. I always feel like starting over when I die anyway.

Playing on PS4 and loving it. Then texture pop-in are an issue, but it can be a uniquely terrifying and interesting world.

I really hope they develop VR controller support for this...I hate the idea of using a keyboard with a vive on my head but I really think itd add to the immersion being able to stretch out and grab things...kind of like star shelter which is essentially this but in space and in VERY early access.
This game looks like a lot of fun and relaxing...my issues is that I HATE the ocean. My worst nightmare is being in the ocean not seeing land anywhere in the darkness of night...that alone makes me feel like i'd panic playing this game lol.
