  • Comments regarding the Briggs and Stratton Vanguard 23 with Redrive after testing and flying 35 hours on Legal Eagle XL ORV. This is met to be an alternative for the low horsepower 1/2VW engines and appears to meet the challenge. We have tested the Warp Drive prop and now using a Culver Wood prop.

    35 to 50 horse is available from this engine. Apparently without serious reliability issues. I will build a Honda GX series and see how it does on my trike before I know the reliability personally.

    So happy to finally see one of these on the front of a LE. Not surprised it was you to show it off first. I'm guessing the "charging magnet" on the flywheel isn't the same as the ignition magnet? I know there's fuel injected versions of this engine and I'm curious what the weight difference is between the two intake systems. It may be worth upgrading the valve springs in it as cheap insurance if they are being revved up higher than spec. Looking forward to seeing more of this!

      if u up the springs then the rods and cam need to be addressed, 4,000 is the limit by manufacturer, 4400 for a minute or so may not be a big deal.

    • @tracnunya7165
      @tracnunya7165 ปีที่แล้ว

      aluminum does not have provisions to provide a magneto, no charging. aluminum is chosen to save weight of if revving to 5k and beyond, else flywheel may go off like a grenade

      problem with injected version is it is NOT SAFE to fly. It can shut down engine for many reasons and it limits the engine rpm and the altitude sensor may be an issue. The solution is buy the injected version and toss the mcu and replace with a speeduino

    Hi Les, do you have the stock cam? A "performance" cam will give more HP at the rpms you are turning. Upgrade to the valve springs might be useful.

    • @vg23air
      @vg23air 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      change the cam or valve springs and you MUST do both, and go to steel push rods, AND billet rods. The correct mod order is billet rods with auto bearings, steel push rods, cam, then valve springs, any other order is a fail in flight

    the briggs and stration the kolher is a good engine also the engines are simple and ultralights are not ment to fly in light conductions and the best part is they are 4 stroke and lest trouble than a 2 stroke and the TBO is higher and the price of the 2 strokes out there are just to high a price to get only 300 TBO it looks good

      and they wont work for part 103, the ECU is locked and you cant go over 4,000 rpm, AND that ecu can DISABLE the engine in flight, low oil pressure and other issues, SPEEDUINO efi is the answer, then, no carb ice either

    I would like to see the engine on a stand with a culver 60x30 to see if it can turn it, if it can spin at 4,000 it may be a better choice than the 27 on it now

    4,400 62 to 63 mph
    4,000 56 to 57 mph

    Les - I saw mentioned in another video you tried an aluminum flywheel, to save weight, about 10LBs. I assume the aluminum flywheel is made by ARC? Have you or anyone contacted them to see if they would make a modified version of the same flywheel with 2 modifications. 1) Remove the fins. Since all the cooling ducting has been removed the fins are not needed and they are a parasitic load on the motor. Removing the fins will result in more power to the prop, and the flywheel can be made from a thinner blank and require less machining so it should cost less as well. On VW 40HP motors for Formula V disconnecting the cooling fan gained about 7HP or about 17% so well worth doing. 2) Add back the charging system components. I don't know if the parts necessary for charging can be removed from the cast iron flywheel and added to the aluminum one, or if ARC would have to source the appropriate components but I would gladly pay ARC prices for an aluminum flywheel to save weight, result in more power to the prop, and still have a charging system to recharge the battery and run the instruments. Thanks for doing all this development work.

    • @vg23air
      @vg23air 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      throw the flywheel in the trash and go speeduino for spark, no flywheel needed with redrive as that and the prop become a 20 lb virtual flywheel

    Torque flys em, hp sells em

    • @EllipsisAircraft
      @EllipsisAircraft 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Horsepower to weight ratio is the determining factor for aircraft and automobile performance. Not torque alone.
      You can apply all the torque to a fixed object, but if it doesn't turn, there is no power produced.
      (Torque x RPM)/ [(550/2pi)x60]
      makes for horsepower.

  • @vg23air
    @vg23air 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    60x27 prop - 1.8 redrive - 86F (stock 23 @ 4400 is 28 hp)
    4400 rpm = 2444 prop rpm = 204 lbs thrust @ 62 mph = 35 hp
    4000 rpm = 2222 prop rpm = 168 lbs thrust @ 57 mph = 26 hp
    3600 rpm = 2000 prop rpm = 136 lbs thrust @ 51 mph = 19 hp

    • @LesHomanLegalEagleXL
      @LesHomanLegalEagleXL  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Governor is removed. We are turning a max of 4300 rpm with Max gross weight and wood prop. With the warp drive ground adjustable turning max of 4100 rpm with max gross weight. If aircraft was piloted by 170 lb pilot these RPM’s could be reduced. Engine is all stock

      @@LesHomanLegalEagleXL I'm 245 pounds pilot. All your videos seem to show the L.E. flying just fine with the stock vtwin. I was seriously considering modding a preditor 670cc with billet aluminum flywheel (non charging), billet rods, Molly push rods, heavy springs, and cam rated for 6k rpm. The redrive using ace aviation redrives. I want the power to get me off the ground but I only plan to fly it gracefully.
