What did you think of this video? Should I do more interviews with other working professionals? Disney's Portfolio guide: onanimation.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/walt-disney-sample-portfolio-notes.pdf
Thank you so much for this! I'm a game artist trying to transition into visdev, and this is HUGE as I don't have much connections yet in the industry. BTW the Riot concept artist, who Rea mentioned at 12:40, who got hired because of a doodle in their sketchbook is Rembert Montald. He shared this story on a Proko video.
Hi Audrey! Congratulations on excepting changes in your career! Im happy you found this helpful! I will have more videos and interviews coming on getting industry jobs topic, so stay tuned! 😊 Also, thank you for clarifying artist’s name! 👍
I really appreciate this interview. You followed up with thoughtful questions that newer folks like myself struggle with. Such as, messaging established artists. And asking what, then, would you ask these artists. The anxiety a new artist feels underneath the enormous hope that a stranger/successful artist is nice can be crushing. Happy I found this today. I hope you're having a good one. And thank you to Rea Lankford, too.
I’m so glad you found this helpful! 😊 When starting out in any career it can feel overwhelming, but especially as an artist, so I will do my best to give any and all information you need to help you succeed ☺️ If you have any questions or future video suggestions please let me know, so I can make more content that is actually useful for you 😊
very very very insightful! Now the only thing left is just to figure out why I already specialise in a niche, there's lots of it on my portfolio, and yet I still can't get a job
I love interviews with professionals. They're very helpful, and I always tend to gravitate towards them because it gives me a feel for day-to-day experiences within the industry. Thanks for this one!
I'd say if you doing NSFW commissions make sure that you are still working on portfolio, otherwise you may just end up with a bunch of art you can't put it in it. Great vid thanks! In terms of specific artist, I think Trent Kaniuga gives great advice in general. Aaron Blaise is very talented, especially if you are into fine art. Udemy has sales like once a month and classes are like $13.00
This was a great discussion for a lot of artists looking to break into doing concept and produciton art as a career! I have to agree with the social media aspect, it's really strange that big companies care that much about your SM presence, especially since I've never heard of companies caring about it at all. I worry about where this could lead to.
I'm glad you found this video helpful! Yes, SM is very important for us artists. Some companies care quite a bit, while others don't (for now at least). So I think in general it's a good practice to have an official art account and keep it updated.
Really amazing video, and super helpful info from both of you guys! Im in a time in my life where Im tired of taking jobs as a cashier in a fastfood place and I want to take my art career seriously and this video had exactly what I needed to hear to get started on the first steps of that. Thank you for making this!!
Thank you for watching 😊 I’m happy you found it useful. If there is anything else you would like to know make sure to let me know in the comments. Im always looking for ideas to make more useful videos for my artsy cookies
Sure! Im constantly looking to find out what interests my audience, so if this topic interests people Id love to make it 😊 Thank you for giving me the idea
Huh, I haven’t thought about it that way, 🤔 but now that you bring it up, it is possible! These particular images I got from Pexel.com , so I just credit the website and the creator that uploaded images there, but in this case I am not sure if that person is an original artist, or if he used AI art, as he has a big variety of style. Dang it! Does it mean I have to re-edit my video now 🤦🏻♀️😂🙈 Thanks for pointing it out! I should be more careful now with more AI Art being generated these days… Sorry everyone, I let it slide there 😅🤦🏻♀️ I’ll be more careful next time
Hey, nice video! I want ask a question that intrigues me. Don't having a degree its really that bad in the concept artist career, or in general entertainment art industry? Like if I am an really good artist that have an amazing portfolio, I will struggle in finding a job in this area? Or the chances are pratically equal than someone who has a degree?
Hi there! Thank you for asking! Having a degree helps when applying to a big studio and it is helpful with connections, BUT at the end of the day, your skills and portfolio are the most important thing when getting a job as an artist. If your portfolio is strong nobody will care about the degree, because they can see that you have built the knowledge and needed foundation to get the job done well. I personally think that the biggest advantage of going to art school is building connections, nowadays everything else you can easily learn online. When I went to art school most of the time in order to get homework done we had to go to YT and watch many tutorials anyway, so honestly you can definitely build your skillset on your own. I actually have a video talking about alternatives to art school. To improve your portfolio definitely reach out to artists like Rea suggested and see if you can get some feedback to improve. And most importantly - never give up! It might take some time, but as long as you keep pushing - you will get here! Good luck!
@@kozinoart Thanks for the reply, you and other artists who make content help me a lot not to give up on art! It's so lucky to have a community so dedicated to helping each other.
@@riccia888 You see, schoolism is an all-rounder, but it does not focus on the basics of fundamentals. It is advanced. The courses there are specialized. As an artist myself, I have studied and practiced the basics for free through the internet, Art school was not needed. But once you pass through the basics, you need some guidance on what you want to focus on. You're serious about it, and so, schoolism is there as a stepping stone. That is also a reason why you need to apply to art schools. They want to see your skills, and if you're serious or not.
@@kuichihavorra935 I agree, but there is always be a negative and postive because of hyper capitalism (too much hype) which lead to regret in the end. Just like what you said there “does not focus on the basics of fundamentals”. The irony is Fundamental is Everything in this game of art. A lot of young artist can get confuse because so many ppl focus on the style and forget you have to learn the foundation first. Speaking of style, if you notice why Stephen Silver courses are not in schoolism anymore is because theres too much complain. I read long time ago in reddit he spent $980 for a character design course and another $980 for caricature course and complain why his not getting good. Of course your not getting good because u dont have the fundamentals. Someone ask him do you know andrew loomis he has lots of free books just copy them and he didnt even know that artist because schoolism rarely mention artist outside of their ecosystem, its like a greatwall of china. Imagine how many newbie students spend thousands of dollars go to waste. If you want proof watch Nathan fowkes color and light critique many students dont know even simple proportion and perspective. How can a teacher critique about color while you barely draw basic geometry. Just like what Feng Zhu said just draw too much tutorials and convention will not help you if your are a beginner. This is not an isolated case theres a lot of complains in discord server as well. Im so familiar with this stuff because I followed schoolism since the beginning, at that time so expensive because its not subscription base. We are all humans, we all have our antennas of truth we know what is good or bad. Imagine when you open the eye catching wesbite with beautiful thumbnails and it says Education Evovle best online art school. You dont even have a track record like FZD. What brakes my heart when reading lightbox expo discord server and someone ask do I need to go to art school and some moderator said you dont need art school just take Schoolism waaa.
I am sorry, I can't watch it. Can you just look at me as a viewer? I tried to turn my head a bit aside to match the line of your eyes! This is the basics, how don't you know that!!! P.s. Your friend looks into the camera properly even if she has more hair on one side the same as you have!

If you want to be a starving artist go to schoolism.😊
Why do you think so? I've taken many courses at schoolism and honestly, they are not much different from the classes we had in art school
