As a German whose best friend is an enby person from England, I absolutely *hate* the fact that the German language is so heavily gendered. I busted in laughter at 4:50, not only because of the stupidity of gendering golf balls (really?). But mainly because, in French "PD" literally means "f@g", and I think that the combination of misogyny and homophobia, in one picture, is a pure piece of art.
Also fun fact. The word vagina in French ("vagin") is masculine ("un vagin"), but one of the word for penis ("verge") is feminine ("une verge"). I guess trans rights are human rights, then.

One product that is pointlessly gendered is Kinder's surprise egg. Before, i.e. 20 years ago, there was only one red genderless chocolate egg, but nowadays there must be a separate blue Kinder egg for boys and pink Kinder egg for girls. And I don't understand that why, that why did it have to change itself into a gendered when it didn't have to do so before. Colors are very, pointlessly gendered.
Me, my aunt and my cousin went shopping for school supplies and my cousin, who is a boy, wanted a purple binder, purple (and I think he said pink aswell) index cards, a purple notebook, and when his mom said he was going to share a pack of highlighters with his older brother, he made it known that he wanted the purple highlighter. His mom didn't let him get anything purple (except for the highlighter because he needs different color highlighters) because his dad would think it's too girly. I told him if he wanted to, he could get those things in the color blue (I pointed at a specific shade of blue. I don't know how to describe it) because that blue is the closest color to purple and he said "Yeah, I guess so". He was a bit dissapointed he couldn't get things in purple but he was content with blue for now. Colors are so pointlessly gendered. Colors shouldn't be called "girly" or (as a girl myself I've heard this next one quite a bit) "for boys". Their just colors.

As someone who was born a female, lots of my older relatives will come up to me after shows and say, “wow my little actress, you did so well!” And it almost feels degrading. It's so interesting to see different opinions in differen language. Nowdays in Russia feminists are fighting to be called atress instead of actor. And we have really hot discussion that can stop any family dinner on wheather should be women allowed to make female versions of professions or not.
In Russia we do have genders, however, when it comes to work, we use mostly only male gender even for women at work, because male gender is considered a "basic" gender. Female gender is used only to say something insulting (for example if a female doctor was a good doctor - she is called by a male version of the word "doctor", but if she made a mistake, she is named by a female version, because female version is an insult, not an actual word for a lot of people). So when people are talking about professionals, who are good at there job, everybody automatically assume that we are talking about a man.
We even had a meme, where men in the comments talked about some new scientific researched and how women could never do the same. They automatically assued that that 2 scientists were men, because scientists had gender-netural names and were called by male version of the word "scientist" in the article. Turned out the thing they talked about was made by 2 women
Russian feminists belive that by using female versions of professions we will make people notice, that women do different work to and are actually as good as men in it.

fun fact about gendered autism: as an autistic trans guy, my autistic traits are generally more visible than they are in cis girl's behavior. so i guess it's also about brain structure, not only being socialized differently. but i'm usually "better" in masking my autistic traits than cis guys.
also, cause my traits were more obvious, i was diagnosed when i was 13, even tho afab ppl usually get diagnosed as adults.
another autism and trans related fun fact: autism is, in fact, different brain structure. autistic ppl are more likely to be transgender (nonbinary included), cause being transgender is probably caused by different brain develoption (at least thats how some studies say). an autistic person is also more likely to be queer in general. for example, autistic men are bisexual more often than allistic (non-autistic) men, and around 20% of autistic women are on ace spectrum

as someone who's afab, i definitely don't think shoes/insoles/socks should be gendered solely (heh) because i have big ass feet and struggle to get cute footwear. getting a size 10 wide women's is a feat (heh) but all the men's stuff is boring/ugly. just make standardized sizing and different widths for all shoes so i can get cute ones for my gigantic feet!!! sandals are even worse, all the nice ones are like half the width of my foot :'( i've been relegated to ugly men's flip flops for life.

    • @hannahk1306
      @hannahk1306 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep, I have the opposite problem (ridiculously narrow feet) - why are adults not allowed shoes in different widths? I hate shoe shopping, because most shoes are like flip flops on me! The only time I see adult shoes in different widths the only option is "wide fit".

At the doctors (before I was diagnosed) my mum mentioned something about thinking I was on the spectrum, the doctor asked “Is she social?” (Not my pronoun, please don’t actually use that for me.) and she said yes and the doctor was like “No, she’s not autistic.” And I sat there, dumbfounded, after my extensive research of the differences of ASD in sexes.

  • @Sophie_Cleverly

I've heard that originally it was considered quite a feminist thing to gender professions - as in to show that women could do them. So people would take pride in being an actress instead of an actor. It's interesting that our language and culture have shifted to where people are now preferring the original terms (or new gender neutral ones).
The gender in language thing is really fascinating as well! Duolingo has a great article on it. Gender in language is really more of a way of categorising things rather than having much to do with the genders of people (certainly when it comes to nouns). But it must be difficult if you want to use gender neutral terms and they don't really exist in your language. It will be cool to see how it evolves in future to accommodate this.

I then proceeded to use the words any person with common sense would say “why would they make the bible gendered, the bible has always been neutral-“ she then proceeded to say “oh, it’s because it has girly topics like virginity and periods.”…… that stuff was already in the bible- periods and virginity are mentioned in the bible countless amount of times, yet it’s still pointlessly gendered-

Should men be allowed to wear shorts: I walked through London once, wearing Capri shorts (probably the least fashionable & least masculine type of shorts) with my then girlfriend. Not only did hot women keep checking me out (something that never happens - I'm short and obese), but one was staring at me up and down so intently that she walked into a lamppost.
Definitely I should be allowed to wear shorts - just in case that ever happens again, it would be hilarious.
Bonus: I later went on a date with a random friend while I was wearing said shorts - and we ended up snogging and groping each other. My then girlfriend was a little bit jealous but again it worked for me.....

I've seen many autistic girls and AFAB people diagnosed as late as in their 50s. But a reason behind it could be that some people don't have the money to get an official diagnosis or that they are often misdiagnosed with all sorts of things.

I (for context, cis woman with kind of uncertain sexual orientation, but I'm going with biromantic now) have kind of opposite experience with closes and shoes stuff. Male closes look supper baggy on me, which l'm often not OK with (I guess it's because of biological male generally having different body proportions). But winter and autumn shoes and socks are almost exclusively male, as they are both cheaper and higher quality than female (and my feet are big enough for male size to suit).
With different people having different experience on it, I believe gendering of these stuff isn't unnecessary. And I'm generally OK with them being called "for men" and "for women" (as long as it's OK to buy opposite gender stuff just because it works better for you), but I agree it's not the case with LGBTQ+ merch.
