Only 10??? really disliked most of the 80's pop/rock music. A lot of it, for me, was the production but there was so much more. The artists I really liked were either splitting or doing rubbish (eg McCartney, The Beach Boys, The Who, Stevie Wonder) and none of the new singers or bands were doing much for me. . . and before anyone says I'm just an old hippie from the sixties I was only 17 in 1980 so musically that "should" have been my decade!
    It wasn't!

The 80s were such a fertile time for really crappy music. Hollow sounding synths, overly processed drums, and an increasing focus on visual presentation due to the rise of the mtv video brought about a marked decline in musical creativity which was already happening in late 70s. I agree with some of your choices and not others. The guitar solo of sweet child of mine still makes it worthwhile for me. I was teenager in 80s and pretty quickly discovered my generation was really shortchanged with regards to music. The mid 60s to mid 70s is the classic period for rock. While there continue to be great artists to this day, that was the peak. In the 80s even the greats like Bowie, McCartney, Stones, etc lost the plot and went through major career doldrums. I have very little nostalgia for the music of my coming of age era. Even much of the music from that period that i do like hasn't aged well.

Cats of Sherman There were two generally popular artists that I thought did okay in the 80's:
The Pretenders, with Get Close, and
Robert Plant with Now & Zen
      oh, and XTC, with everything.
      THREE artists. 😊

This radio station that I listen to a work has been playing the Safety Dance pretty much everyday for over a year. A few times, they played it twice within 3 hours. I can't stand that song anymore.

  • @jtmichaelson

I am writing this as you are listing them and pausing to comment before the next song. Since we are so close in our Macca and Beatles appreciation, let's see how we do with the 80s. Here we go:
10: Oh no! Bad start! "Abracadabra" was an amazing song! Lyrically it was challenged, but I love the song. Oooh, you got my first hate comment post. Not "hate", but just badly disagreement.
09: I was only 13 when "Ebony & Ivory" came out so I'm allowed to like that one if just for the time and place in my history.
08: Agree! I liked "Safety Dance" for a bit there, but it ended up grating on my past lives and my ancestor's entire history.
07: I got sick to DEATH with "Sweet Child O' Mine". And I thought it would go away and be done forever until I worked at a Classic Rock station in 2000 and got sick of it all over again.
06: "I Just Called To Say I Love You" is most definitely Stevie's less-than-stellar moments. Lionel Richie could have done it and it would have been great. But Stevie? Nope! But I like the song as long as I imagine Gloria Estefan doing it.
05: "Kokomo" got played to death and never recovered for me. With that said, it was a fantastic song for the first month or so and I bought the 45. But now it's almost dead in the water.
04: You just made up for the lack in judgment for "Abracadabra" with "Don't Worry, Be Happy". You win this round, Batman, but we still have 3 more songs to go.
03: Okay, we have a weird dilemma here. "We Built This City" does suck ... for a Starship song. I love the song, but it would have been better off being a Mr. Mister song. But for a band that once put out Red Octopus, Earth, and the Airplane stuff, this is a loser of a song. Even it's writer, Bernie Taupin had to shake his head. But for someone else, this would have been a great song. (And as dry as your jokes are sometimes, they are quite funny at times).
02: Again, I like "We Didn't Start The Fire" but I just wished it wasn't a Billy Joel song. He had a spotless record up to that point.
01: And as for Wang Chung ... you just won the internet, Larry. You totally redeemed yourself for blasphemously adding Paul McCartney and "Abracadabra" to this list. Wang Chung has not put out a good song ever. They are so bad they didn't even put out bad songs, they put out total shit songs.
God bless you and Mollie and Jinxy, and your hatred for Wang Chung.

Because my early party days in the eighties were in provincial town clubs that only played charts music,
often I had to sit through the worst waiting for better to come . So the most annoying of those popular tracks were:
    1. Kool and the Gang - Celebration.
    2. Foreigner - I Wanna Know What Love Is
    3. Lionel Richie - Hello
    4. Michael Jackson - Wanna Get Starting Something/Thriller
    5. Spandau Ballet - All their hits
    6. UB 40 - Red Red Wine
    7. Simply Red - All their hits
    8. Imagination - Music and Lights
    9. Abba - Supertrouper
    10. Prince - Kiss

I grew up in the 80's and would have to disagree with much of what you (and others) have said. I will agree with "Abracadabra" being a pretty terrible song. I like the 80's because this was the decade of Ultravox with Midge Ure. And Madness has defined the Ska of the 80's. But Madness is not Ska only. They made great things too. I was fearing that you would put Our House on your list because at the moment we were hearing this song everywhere.
The most innerving song of the 80's and one of the worst of all times is You Spin Me Round. By Dead or Alive. Even my dog was despising this song and she started to bark each time it was played on the radio. Now I don't listen to the radio anymore.

Great list Larry. Heres some more that can be used for torture:
Any Way You Want It by Journey (a definite contender in the worst lyric contest)
Sussudio by Phil Collins (another contender emerges)
    The Final Countdown by Europe
I Can't Fight This Feeling by REO Speedwagon ("put away these oars forever)
Mr. Roboto by Styx (Zappa did it so much better with Joe's Garage)
    Anything by Dead or Alive
...and much of Billy Joel's 80's output.
No More Lonely Nights (12 inch dance version) Paul really ruins a good song with this mix.
(Edit) I almost forgot to include Loverboy's Working For The Weekend.

Good choices, I believe. The 80's had terrible songs even you would exclude one hit wonders.
I choose songs from the CDs I own:
    1. Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney - The Girl is Mine (Cat fight of two adult men?)
    2. Anthrax - Finale (The lyrics are just dumb)
    3. Budgie - Truth Drug (I was bored with a couple of songs. I am a big fan but this one didn't work well)
    4. Dio - Shoot Shoot (I like "Sacred Heart" but the closing song is awful and Dio sounds bored).
    5. Guns N Roses - Anything Goes (My way, your way, anything goes... not any cliche goes for me).
    6. Judas Priest - Fever (Rob as still in closet although this song sounds Village People have got too heavy steams).
    7. Cyndi Lauper - Yeah yeah (I don't get why people like her music. She has a couple of good songs but her voice sounds awful and compared to her Madonna and Axl Rose are good singers. )
    8. Metallica .- The Frayed Ends of Sanity (Their most annoying 80's song.)
    9. Skid Row - Can't Stand the Heartache (A very good band but this song was the pinnacle of the hard rock cliches).
    10. Kim Wilde - Dancing in the dark (Kim is amazing when it comes to the 80's albums except for this song. The melody is terrible. The lyrics - we were dancing, dancing in the dark - sweet romancing...".
I think Blondie is one of the best bands ever but they had a couple of missteps on "Autoamerican" but they wouldn't make it in the TOP 10.

The 80s was the worst decade for mainstream pop which includes New wave, Power Pop, etc..... pass the bucket ☺️ I agree with your list except for Sweet Child and Kokomo but I get the hate. One of the most hated songs for me was from a so-called alternative artist: Don't Let's Start - They Might Be Giants. Even to this day I can't get the feckin' song out of my head. However, there are songs that I hated at the time but when I hear them now they bring back memories. One thing I remember about the 80s was the attitude that we were so cool and futuristic plus I remember people dumping on the 70s at any chance. 😊I not sure if it's because I'm older but I see no distinction between the last two decades musically or culturally.

I love the Beach Boys too but Kokomo is such a steaming pile of shit. Especially considering that Brian Wilson put out Love and Mercy at the same time and it got hardly any airplay. Can't agree on We Built this City though, I think that song is bloody awesome.

The last few seconds of this video are really funny. You could probably make further use of that clip.
I agree with most of these, although I don't listen to enough oldies radio to really be bothered by them. I'd cut Abracadabra some slack though because I see it really as a comedy song. Of course, Steve Miller also recorded a song with Paul McCartney... Hmmm.
For balance I'm replacing Abracadabra with Woman by John Lennon, which ripped off the intro to Brass In Pocket by The Pretenders, and... well let's just say I never need to hear it again.

    • @robertsaul234
      @robertsaul234 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Many songs in the rock era have similar intros, doesn't mean the songs suck. Woman and Brass in Pocket are both great songs.

  • @MattHayesVinyl
    @MattHayesVinyl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hmm, "Abracadabra"... well in a way the song is a sell out because Steve went into full blown cheesy 80's mode. On the other hand, I do think the chords are interesting and unusual.
Agree with "Ebony & Ivory".. incredibly irritating song. McCartney was at his syrupy peak by the early 80's and it all culminated in "Ebony & Ivory."
Also agree with "The Safety Dance". Just the opening keyboard riff always grates whenever I hear it. Obviously it went to #1 in the UK.
Nooo, can't agree at all with "Sweet Child 'O Mine". It's a great song. That guitar riff... come on. Yeah it's overplayed but that shouldn't take away from it being a good song.
haha Yeah, "I Just Called To Say I Love You". I have a soft spot for it because it's nostalgic but, like McCartney, it was during Stevie's syrupy period. It would have made a great Eurovision entry, though. Right up their alley.
I think "Kokomo" is okay" It's relatively inoffensive. Wouldn't be close to my top 10 worst 80s songs. We'd probably be raving about it today had the Beach Boys released it in the 60s.
"Don't Worry Be Happy" is one I agree with. Didn't like the song back then, still don't like it now. The annoying finger clicking, the over the top happiness... no thanks.
"We Built This City"... I understand why it made this list but it's really not that bad. A big problem is that it's sooooo overplayed.
Gotta disagree with Billy Joel too. "We Didn't Start the Fire" is a decent song. Odd lyrics, though.
"Everybody Have Fun Tonight" is terrible but "Dance Hall Days" is great!

200% right for Ebony and Ivory, I like the artists, but this song is so cheesy, I don't like that too. Same for I just called to say... The Kokomo song is so-so, but way under the norm for the Beach Boys. My number one would be Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane... oh, just joking ... Ebony and Ivory is pretty annoying, but I also don't like songs like 'If You Leave Me Now' or 'Babe', not because those songs are bad (actually they're alright), but because after such a hit song, the group changes his style to produce more of the same...
