I'm a big Costello fan and have all his albums. Here is a ranking of my favorites:
    1. Imperial Bedroom
    2. This Year's Model
    3. Armed Forces
    4. Brutal Youth
    5. My Aim is True
    6. When I Was Cruel
    7. King of America
    8. The Boy Named If
    9. Get Happy
    10. All This Useless Beauty
    11. Trust
    12. Blood and Chocolate
    13. Punch the Clock
    14. Painted From Memory
    15. Look Now
Elvis has an unwieldy discography, but there is a lot of great music after his "classic period" which I would say ended with the initial break up of the Attractions. I especially think Brutal Youth is an underrated album and worth finding.

Great picks, sir! GET HAPPY!!! is my own personal favorite. It hit me at a great time ( I was 17) and I was on a tear to study and experience all of the great Rock music I was hearing and reading about. Creem Magazine was my Bible at the time. As important then, as MOJO and UNCUT are to me now. Thankfully, I am still curious to make new music discoveries and still get a complete jolt and thrill when a live show starts...
Anyway, thanks for all of your great videos. I am playing catch-up on your past work. Your love of, and obsession with music is wonderful to behold. It is a big part of your life and who you are. I feel the same thing. It makes life bearable on the bad or dull days...Thanks again! Elvis Costello is forever evolving and interesting. Love your evaluation...

Great video. I am a huge Elvis Costello fan. Armed Forces is my favorite Elvis Costello album with This Year's Model a close second. Imperial Bedroom has a special place as that was the tour that I was able to see him in concert. I didn't stop buying Elvis Costello albums but his early period is the best and I like all the albums from your time period including Almost Blue.

Imperial bedroom is sensational. As close to perfection as it gets for me. 'Beyond belief' is one of my favourite album openers, 'Shabby doll', 'Little fool', 'Pidgin English', and 'Town cryer' is one of my favourite closing tracks. It's an ambitious, eclectic body of work where each track is both interesting and melodic. I love it.

Costello is definitely one of the best songwriters of his generation. The deluxe CDs with extra tracks and b-sides that were released probably twenty odd years ago now are real treasure troves. I don't have all of these but I have most. Personal favourites are Imperial Bedroom, King of America, Blood and Chocolate and Spike. Mighty like a rose is uneven but I do think it has a few strong songs- I really like the closing Couldn't call it unexpected no.4. In my opinion he gifted some of his best songs to Paul Mc Cartney in this period- You want her too, Distractions and My Brave Face were I believe were all co-writes that appeared on 1989s Flowers in the Dirt. I would strongly recommend 1994s Brutal Youth if you haven't heard it. It might be my favourite Costello album. The songs are taut, vibrant and convincing and The Attractions are at their best. Again its the closing song on this album that slays me- the beautifully evocative Favourite Hour.

Brutal Youth is a great album. I saw him live for the first time with the Attractions on that tour. He played a 45 minute set of continuous music with no break between songs. They took a short break then another 45 minute continuous set. Great show. Brutal Youth is a really special album for me.

I LOVED this video, Larry. Thanks for giving props to one of my favorite songwriters! The Attractions were such a tight backing band. Blood & Chocolate is a grower. I wish Taking Liberties would have gotten the reissue treatment. The one he released in January is his best set of songs since 1986 IMO. I wanna get a hold of that magazine. My top 10:
    1. Get Happy!! (1980)
    2. Imperial Bedroom (1982)
    3. This Year's Model (1978)
    4. Blood & Chocolate (1986)
    5. Armed Forces (1979)
    6. Trust (1981)
    7. King Of America (1986)

Great topic! You’ve inspired me to give “King of America” another spin. With T-Bone Burnett, Elvis crafted an 80s record with a timeless rootsy sound. “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” is one of my favorite covers of all time. For your consideration: give “Look Now” from 2018 a listen. It has some nice elements from your favorites.

    3. Imperial Bedroom (1982)

    1. King of America
    2. This Year's Model
    3. Get Happy!
    4. Trust
    5. Armed Forces
(top 5 albums are all basically perfect and are essentially interchangeable as to which is best)
    6. Blood And Chocolate
    7. Imperial Bedroom
    8. Almost Blue
(these are all fantastic 4-star albums with Blood And Chocolate edging out the other two because it has "I Hope You're Happy Now," "Tokyo Storm Warning," "Crimes of Paris" and "Next Time Round")
    9. Spike
    10. Mighty Like A Rose
(these 2 are an interesting mix. I think if "Spike" had been pared down by a few songs, it might rank a little higher)
    11. Goodbye Cruel World
    12. Punch The Clock
    13. My Aim Is True
(I have never liked his debut. "Goodbye Cruel World" isn't as bad as Elvis said it was and, if you ever picked up the 2-disc release from a couple decades back, that second disc is pretty excellent. "Punch The Clock" pretty much sucks.)

Nick Lowe produced those first five, all classics and favorites. Nick Lowe wrote the often-covered (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love And Understanding. Nick Lowe, with Dave Edmonds, was doing fun stuff of his own on Stiff Records at the time. Like you, Larry, I fell off of Elvis collecting, but I never stopped collecting Nick Lowe’s music. What a catalog Nick Lowe has, from I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass to aging gracefully into Dig My Mood, even an excellent Christmas record. Nick Lowe is back to rocking on the road this summer with Los Straightjackets. One-hit-wonder with Cruel To Be Kind, it’s well worth checking out Nick Lowe’s first LP, Jesus Of Cool, and at least a few classic songs like All Men Are Liars, Half A Boy And Half a Man, I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Rock And Roll). When I drifted away from current rock in the 80’s, I still kept up with Talking Heads, Grateful Dead, and Nick Lowe.

Interesting video. Funnily enough the only two Elvis Costello albums I have are Almost Blue and Brutal Youth. In the 80s I had The Man and although I liked and knew the songs I rarely played it. In the 90s I bought Almost Blue on CD with the bonus tracks and loved it. At that time I was also listening to Gram Parsons, Johnny Cash and Hank Williams so that had something to do with my liking of Almost Blue. Despite loving the album I have never had the urge to delve into his catalogue. I bought Brutal Youth a year or two back for a dollar (¥100). I haven't played it yet so I might play it today. Cheers

My experience with Elvis Costello is just like yours. I bought and loved the first album and stuck around until Mighty Like a Rose. I bought a few albums here and there afterwards, but for me, his big streak was over.
    1. Imperial Bedroom
    2. This Year's Model
    3. Armed Forces
    4. My Aim is True
    5 Trust
    6 Spike
    7 King of America
    8 Blood and Chocolate
    9 Brutal Youth
    10 Almost Blue
    11 Get Happy
    12. Punch the Clock
    13 Goodbye Cruel World
    14 Mighty Like a Rose

I agree with you this far: I would have the same 8 albums in the top 8 as what you have. However, I'd have them in a different order. I'd go something like 1. This Year's Model, 2. My Aim Is True, 3. Armed Forces, 4. Imperial Bedroom, 5. Trust, 6. King of America, 7. Blood and Chocolate, 8. Get Happy. The top 2 are the only ones that are firm, the other 6 I would consider to be very good, but not great.

  • @Macnee2
    @Macnee2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'd say This Year's Model was his peak as a rock/punk band. Still some very mature ideas and genius lyrics. Armed Forces was amazing but Steve Nieves keyboard parts aways made me think of electronic Nerd music and took a lot of the rock coolness out of the songs. Get Happy had some sensational songs but you could take or leave a lot of the double paced ones that sounded like Motown covers. Trust was beautiful all the way through and his peak 'mature musician and lyricist' album. I loved the pop songs on imperial Bedroom but the countryish ballads and non pop stuff made me give up at that point.

It’s interesting we have almost the same experience. After years and years loving every album my interrest came to an abrupt halt when he released Mighty like a rose. And I also skipped Almost Blue (wasn’t interested in country at the time - but maybe it’s time to give it anothe shot) In later years I always have a listen when he comes out with something new but nothing seems to stuck these days. But I still totaly love and respekt the man. My favourite was and still is my first one ”This years model” It always make me happy. Imperial Bedroom is also great. And I often comes back to Trust. It’s a bit uneven but some of his best tracks are on it…Watch your step (Love the way he almost spits out Kodachrome) and New lace sleeves. Just love the man

EC is perhaps my favorite artist. I view his career thus, strong out of the gate, since then his work has been mostly great though there have been some missteps here and there. My least favorite period is the late 80s through the early 90s. That being said, I do like Juliet Letters, it's just not something I want to listen to very often, and I love classical music.
Here's how I rank the albums you mentioned.
Goodbye Cruel World. One of the few Elvis albums I don't own, though I have listened to it enough times to know I'm not missing much.
Spike, then Mighty Like a Rose. Long, insufferably precious and pretentious at times, though not without some good songs.
Punch the Clock. Underrated, but still not great, and the first indication that he was indeed fallible.
The remaining albums are all terrific.
King of America. Maybe a tad overrated, but I still like it a lot. I could do without the two covers though.
My Aim Is True. Bottom heavy but still fantastic, side B is a contender for best album side he ever made, especially if you include Watching the Detectives.
Imperial Bedroom. A great album of sophisticated pop gems.
Blood and Chocolate. Perhaps his most biting and personal record. Not a pick me up, unless you like some snarl in your coffee.
This Year's Model. The Attractions' debut, and a classic of post punk cynicism.
Get Happy. Perhaps his most aptly titled album, because listening to it is sheer joy.
Trust. Just excellent songwriting all around. What more can I say?
Armed Forces. E and the Attractions adopt a more pop/new wavey sound and produce their greatest album. I'd like to describe it's brilliance in detail, but in the words of Elvis himself, Oh, I just don't know where to begin.

As you know, with music buffs, we for some time had to really pick and choose our music to listen and even purchase, even if we really wanted to listen to a lot. So I was really quite late on getting into his music until a few years or so ago, and so like alot of the bands I start with over say, Spotify, i'd get straight to the roots and listen to the debut album first to get a good grasp of where the music was headed as well as see if i'd enjoy it. Sure enough 'My aim is true' became an instant favorite as well, loved the tunes and the songwriting was just amazing.
Elvis Costello was quite Sparks-like in that you really had to listen to the music, or even search up the lyrics, to really get into it and not get lost to. That being said, it was often rewarding too. I haven't listened to all his music, or even half yet, so I will take your rankings into consideration and choose from there where to go next if I can't decide. With that said, the music I have listened to (My aim is true, This year's model, Armed forces, Blood and Chocolate etc.) has already got me fanning like Elle Fanning, if her last name was any indication as to how big a fan she is ;)

I consider myself a big Costello fan , King of America is a personal favourite though a couple of songs feel pedestrian but 8 or 9 songs are some of his best. Live he is phenomenal although with a number of 'legacy' artists ticket pricing is beyond a joke now. The version of ' Don't let be misunderstood ' on KOA is only ok , look out for a live radio promo version of it though , transforms it to an essential stripped down classic .

What about "Imperial Bedroom"? Or, is that #6? ha! I think that's his best produced album. And also one of his best.

Punch the Clock will always be my favorite as it was the first Costello album I fell in love with. Imperial Bedroom and Armed Forces are very close contenders though. He has a very strong discography altogether though!

As one who had trouble with the limited/monotonous sound-palette of the Attractions era, naturally my favorite Costello era is the so-called Beard Years ('86 to '92). Also, National Ransom I would single out as a late-period masterpiece, sort of the Turbulent Indigo of the EC catalog.

Costello is one of those artists that I’ve been meaning to take a deep dive on. A lot of the individual songs of his I’ve heard I’ve liked but I don’t believe I’ve heard a full album of his.

We all have different tastes so we are all going to have different opinions on his albums. I'm afraid I have to confess I haven't bought his recent albums but but stopped buying them much later than you. It would be inconceivable for anyone to like everything he's done as he has such varied musical interests. Personally I'd forgive him anything for the pleasure his music has given me over 45 years. Three albums that might be worth wrapping your ears around are, amongst others, Brutal Youth, When I was Cruel and Momofuku. These are all great records. We all have our opinions on Costello but he's the artist and we can't tell him what to do. But if he sat me down at gunpoint and insisted I tell him his three biggest mistakes they would be:-
    1. Meeting T Bone Burnet.
    2. Thinking he is Mr. Americana.
    3. Sacking Bruce Thomas
Saying that though, he has more talent in his discarded toenail clippings than nearly all artists alive today. He is up there with Bob Dylan and Van Morrison in my opinion. As he says himself, if you don't like my latest album then maybe you will like the next one, it's not the end of the world.
    Thanks for an interesting video.

I have Blood and Chocolate, and I have tried many times to hear why everyone loves it so much, but I just don't get it. I do like Goodbye Cruel World very much, though. I think that my favorite Elvis Costello album is the one he did with Burt Bacharach, Painted from Memory.

I was disappointed when Costello came out with all of his crooner albums. His first 5 or 6 albums were his best imo. Sure a few later songs like Blue Chair, 45, every day I write the book were great. Of all reviewers on TH-cam talking about Costello, your best sounds the best to my ears.

1 this year's model - The best song is "This Year's Guurrl" and lip service and I like most of them.
2 get happy! - Love most of the songs and the best might be High Fidelity, Possession, Man Called Uncle, Opportunity
3 My aim is true - A live version of Miracle Man on Stiffs Label is my fav but not on this album. best songs are Alison, Angels Wanna Wear.., I have a soft spot for "I'm Not Angry (I got this camera click click clicking in my head - why deny my juvenile side?)
4 Trust - best songs are Clubland and From a Whisper to a Scream with Tilbrook.
5 Taking Liberties - the best song is Hoover Factory, Just a Memory, Getting Mighty Crowded,
Best songs - Radio Radio, This years girl, What's so funny about.., "I Still Have that Other Girl" (Painted from Memory), Angles Want to Wear my red shoes,
Disappointed with Armed Forces - the best song was Peace, love , understand ing, Chemistry Class, Accidents will happen

Definitely Imperial Bedroom number one, superb! The compilations Out Of Our Idiot and Taking Liberties are great records. Of the more recent albums The Delivery Man is up with the best early albums. Regarding his "wordiness", it is half the appeal of the early albums.
"I step on the brake to get out of her clutches" Brilliant.

So you stopped with Costello right about when I started. I guess it's a generational thing. I suggest you might want to catch up on "Brutal Youth", "All This Useless Beauty", "When I Was Cruel", "Momofuku" and "National Ransom".

King of America is definitely top 5 for me, with Spike, this year's model, juliet letters, North.

The first one I ever bought was Spike. Fantastic. So I went back and bought the first 5 in order, my Aim is True to Trust. Skipped Amost Blue. Trust was about the limit of wordiness and 'maturity' or artsiness. Then I got imperial Bedroom which was a beautiful sounding album but was getting too far away from pop-rock. Stopped there. Listened to Mighty Like a Rose, only liked the singles. Bought Brutal Youth which was mostly fantastic and loved it. Stopped there.

I went through the same 13 albums, most of which I own, and I feel like I should listen some more to Get Happy! because that one just is too busy for my taste. All other albums are great perhaps with the exception of Punch the Clock, which has a couple of great songs but some mediocre songs too. I don't get the self hatred for Goodbye Cruel World or the critical reviews. The sound might be off from time to time but the songs are great. King of America remains my favorite.

Hi Larry! What are your thoughts on the multiple reissues? I TRIED sticking with the Ryko reissues for continuity's sake, but have a few of the Rhino 2CDs. Finally threw my hands up and said "I'm not that much of a completist." so I decided 1 copy each and if I'm missing bonus tracks, it wasn't meant to be. Same issue with Bowie and the Velvets. How about you?
