  • We ring in the new year with some silent shorts from “America’s Sweetheart” Mary Pickford, star of old timey movies. A bit of chaos on the couch prompts a last minute movie switcharoo!
    Also we induct six new members into the basement hall of fame and there are plenty of other surprises:
    In Seen It we discuss archaeologist adventurers, archaeological digs and a crappy prom.

    My mother was a HUGE movie fan. She took me to see a movie every week. I remember walking through the lobby of the shittiest theater in the area. They had a Raiders of the Lost Ark standee. I was totally skeptical but I remembered the name of George Lucas from my favorite movie Star Wars. When I went to see Raiders I was blown away. This cemented my love of movies. I didn't think any movie could do anything wrong. My mom and I continued to go to movies every weekend until I joined the Army in 1989. She died in 2020 from Covid, while suffering from Dementia. Losing her was difficult, losing someone who loved movies as much as me. Watching WTTB is helpful because I know there are tons of other people out there that know the beauty of the lights dimming, popcorn in hand, feet sticking to the floor, who're just as excited to watch something new and be entertained.

      For real, my movie memories are:
      Joe Vs. The Volcano: my family went out for a weekend lunch, and we ended up at the movies somehow (not a thing we did), and this was what we watched.
      Star Trek 4: With my departed grandmother. She had been a sci-fi/trek fan from the old days (we once watched hours of the an original Outer Limits marathon, with her occasional "Oh! I know this one! interspersed). The sound was painfully loud for the first ~20 minutes.
      Bill and Ted: The One Where They Die: #2: I'm Bad at Names: "Can we see it, grandma?" "Ok, let's check it out on Tuesday." "Yay!" I wish I could have asked her how much she hated it. I suspect she would have admitted to liking it more than she did. :D

      @@DanMonio Your comment made me realize that I was very lucky to have that in my life. I'm sorry you didn't have that growing up, like I did. I've met a lot of people in my life now who just don't care about cinema. It always puzzled me because it's such a tremendous artform. Luckily we can all come together to watch WTTB and celebrate it's good, bad and unintentionally silly aspects. Maybe you can be that person to someone else some day, taking them to movies, showing them movies at home and talking about what you love about film. You could be a gateway for others to enjoy it and gain their gratitude for showing them something beautiful they never knew existed. I wish you good luck!

    Fond "Raiders" memory: growing up in Northern California (way up, near the Oregon border) oftentimes films played long after they had a run in the big cities. However, one night the local cinema asked if people wanted to take part in a special preview of a new film, and only gave us the title. I went in thinking it would probably be a boring Western, and came out vastly entertained. Still don't know why they decided to ship a print that far north, but thank you Steven Spielberg and company.

    The one thing Greta Garbo has over Adam Sandler, but it’s a big thing: she’s charming. Sandler looks like an extra/cameo character in a Marvel film who gets his hot dog cart destroyed by a supervillain and gets real sad.

    Re: raiders of the lost arc submarine. U boats of the ww2 era were primarily diesel powered and functioned off of battery when submerged. They were boats that *could* submerge. Not like Cold War or modern subs. So yeah, if the U boat indie is on doesn’t run into trouble or decide to get the jump on an enemy, likely would sail directly without submerging.

    • @suedenim
      @suedenim 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, this model U-Boat could operate submerged for a few hours at a time. The other thing to keep in mind is that Germany was not at war yet, so there would be little need to submerge. My theory is that they only submerged for brief periods to hide their approach to the secret Aegean Nazi base.
      And if it's just an hour or two, the deleted "Indy lashes himself to the periscope" scene isn't all that much more implausible than other Indy shenanigans.

    *My dad said Indy could ride the top of the submarine, because at that time submarines weren’t that great. So unless you were actually attacking they’d just sail around at surface level.

    To answer your question about riding outside the sub - it was standard operating procedure at the time to stay surfaced and run the Diesel engines and only dive when preparing to attack an enemy vessel. It’s very possible they headed straight to the island and did not submerge the entire time.

  • @drskelebone

    That Raiders comment made me remember a thing.
    We had cable, and HBO at a time in the 80s when that wasn't the standard. My dad, being not an idiot, recorded all the big name movies (as well as his personal favorites) onto VHS when they'd come on. I remember him programming, I remember him using the Top-Of-The-Line Apple ][ computer to organize and list the tape number and index (?? time code? however that worked) of each movie on each tape.
    So, by the time I was, let's say 7, I had seen all of the Star Wars, all of the existing Indiana Jones, all of a bunch of things.
    Then my grandparents visited. They had no awareness of these things, and I, a kid who'd been playing with SW toys for years, and had absorbed at least the smallest fraction of the plot (Luke is good, so is Leia and Han. Chewbacca is angry, but good angry. The robots exist. Everyone else is probably bad, so it'ss OK if they get shot or sliced, plus there's that cool pit swinging scene in the first one, and the big robots in 2&3), had no concept that this wasn't ubiquitous.
    "How have you not seen this?" I asked. "It's been out since /before I was born/!"
    And now, I live in the present, where I can watch infinite ST: TNG episodes from when I was slightly older, and can find most TV shows, and a good fraction of movies with zero effort, and either zero dollars, or zero friction to just buying the dang thing so I can see how awful the BeeGees were in "Sgt Pepper".
    Seen it? Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band? It's...not great.
    Love to be here for a decade (??????????that seeems fake????). I hope to be here for another!

    How did Indiana Jones ride on the back of a sub?
    In those days, Nazi subs were deisel running and only dove deep when in pursuit of a ship to torpedo. The deisel engine had a snorkel to push the exhaust out while submerged only enough to hide the sihlouette, but not deep enough to cause water to bring water into the engines.

  • @richardcoulson6027
    @richardcoulson6027 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    RE: Indiana Jones. It wasn’t a submarine, it was a U-boat. They’re diesel powered but couldn’t run on diesel underwater because the exhaust would kill all on board. While underwater they run off batteries that soon need recharging. Because of this, they submerge only infrequently (to attack, to avoid destroyers, to hide from spotting aircraft).
    But yeah, it was still a ridiculous gamble.

    I agree with Matt 100% about the relationship in Prom. It might be a PG relationship, but that still would entail kissing, hand holding, hugging, cuddling. Literally any indication that they love eachother. From what he is describing it sounds not like a PG relationship, but rather a G or lower one. One where you're jsut told oh these two are together and that's the extent of it. A like 1st grade relationship, where they say oh were dating even though they have no idea what that even means. It's not believable for a high school couple to behave that way. Even the most findemental religious people would at least act like they love eachother. Like Brad and Janet at thw beginning of Rocky horror, the two of them are completely sexless until they get to the mansion, but they still hold hands and hug and cuddle and act in love.
