    I was a kid in the 90s, and I remember movies being more crazy, colourful and over the top. I used to think that was just a distortion of memory, but now I’m thinking I must have seen this movie as a child.

    "lack of imagination and ambition" and whats amazing is that Beatty was wanting to make this for years, so much time to develop an interesting script, but also enough time to iron out anything that could make it interesting.

      @suedenim 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, this was a passion project for him! It doesn't seem like it was a case of the studio messing with the movie either. From everything I recall reading about the movie, I think Beatty had pretty firm control over the production.

    Your comments about a simplistic villain without great 'plans or machinations' reminded me of another cop/criminal I rewatched recently, from the year after Dick Tracy in fact: Ricochet, starring Denzel Washington and John Lithgow. That movie has a pretty straightforward spine to it, but it is nothing short of insane the whole way through, with remarkable dialogue and spectacular technical craft from Australian director Russell Mulcahy. Seen it?

    Loved Dick Tracy when it came out. It reminds me of 1960s Batman, and I wish that the eternally rumoured sequel had happened but with a bit of a writer upgrade. The Madonna ‘songs from and inspired by’ album also gave us Vogue, so that’s a big plus too.
    Oh, and I “think” there’s a quite lot of art films called ‘Soggy Bottom’, so ‘Licorice Pizza’ is just a random title for the UK.

    This year, I'm hopeful that an aviation movie will be watched, so I want to try and comment on each video review an aviation film for the show or for seen it!
    The Wind Rises, the "last" film of Hayao Miyazaki. This is the story of Jiro Horikoshi a famous Japanese aviation engineer. I'm a huge fan of Horikoshi and his aircraft and was utterly gutted by this movie. It's mostly fictional, and the tone oddly changes halfway through from being an inspirational film about following your dreams, to being devastated and heartbroken. I'm not really sure where Miyazaki's head was at with this film. I just hope his next "final" film will be a lot bigger.

    I haven't seen the current Dune remake, HOWEVER, I have read the novel, but only after seeing the first movie, and the main problem with the first attempt at a film in the 80s, was that there's too much that's difficult to convey visually for it to ever make sense unless you've read the novel, and know what's going on... for example, when he's going through the spice ceremony, to the audience he looks like he's having fever-dreams, but in the novel, you find out he's seeing ALL of the possible futures at once during that scene.

    It was almost a RELIEF to see this review go this way. When I was a kid and this came out I was so underwhelmed by everything about this movie except the color pallet which is awesome. The movie is utterly lifeless. You can't, for a single moment, believe this is a lived in world. You feel the director yelling action and cut to start and end each scene, because there is no sense of an actual world in motion.

    • @darthclaytor
      @darthclaytor 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it is a 1930's comic strip, not a biopic. Did you believe that a spandax-clad bat and bird could be a lived in world?

    Hello, Matt and Craig. Speaking of Macbeth, have either of you seen Roman Polanski's adaptation from 1971? I am unsure as to what my general opinion of the piece is, but there is much to admire about the film. In particular, the scene depicting Macbeth's vision of what is to come (i.e. Macduff, Birnam wood, the line of Banquo etc.) is one to which I often return for its wonderfully dissonant atmosphere.
    EDIT: Ignore this! Matt and Craig have already commented on Polanski's 'Macbeth' in the Seen It section of their 'The Magician' episode. I apologise.

    • @jackheggarty1929
      @jackheggarty1929 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@meteorrejector I think much of the power of the scene (and of the wider film) derives from the music provided by Third Ear Band, which it largely achieves through an unnerving mix of medieval imitation and flagrant anachronism (e.g. jazz via saxophone). In regard to what is shown, I think the crowing moment of that scene is the mirror sequence.

    If you never read the comics, then this review makes sense. It is true to the old comics...Dick Tracy is a one dimension character lol! My major complaint was that they squander some great characters at the beginning . The goons were the stars of the comic, and they should have been in the movie too. Maybe all the prosthetics/make up would be too expensive and time consuming. Gather 'round children! In 1990 I was co-hosting a weekly one-hour humour show at our university radio station in Windsor, Ontario. We had seen the promotional material for Dick Tracy and VOWED to make our show a "Dick Tracy-free zone." We were fools. How could we mock Dick Tracy -- and uphold our pledge to the queen! -- if we didn't go see Dick Tracy? So we went. And it was miserable. And I don't recall writing any jokes about Dick Tracy, just expressing disgust. But, even so, I knew it was a valid process. Subsequently, in debating believers of alien abduction, UFOs, Trumpism, and conspiracies in general, my instincts have been redeemed: going to their own sources is always the best way of finding out the glaring weaknesses of their fucking shit. It's dirty, dirty work, but you have to do it.

    We are back! Felt like forever, package still in the works I promise. I think the next big guy is Robert Pattinson though that has already come true with his casting in the new batman I suppose.

    Welcome back
    Your flicks always worth checking out
    Welcome back
    To that same old basement you laughed about
    Well, some stars have all changed
    Since you hung around
    But those dreams have remained
    At the lost and found
    Who'd have thought they'd lead you
    (Who'd have thought they'd lead you)
    Right here where we need you
    (Right here where we need you)
    Yeah, we lease you a lot
    'Cause we've got you on the spot
    Welcome back
    Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.
    Welcome back, welcome back

    I am a little late to the game, but is there an easily searchable database of all the movies they've screen on the show, and all the films from all "Scene It" segments?

      On the website there's the episode guide and the search tool. But no straight list that I can see so you'd still have to do some digging.

    I saw this in the theater when it came out. Everyone else in the entire theater left in the middle of the movie because it was so bad. The only reason I stayed was because I paid money for it. And that's when I learned about sunk cost fallacy.

      I remember liking it at the time, but haven't seen it since, and was never motivated to. I think it was all art direction and a weird sort of carryover goodwill from the 1989 Batmania (a movie which I think has aged quite badly itself, though that seems to be a minority opinion.)

    I enjoyed the new Dune. Yeah, it kinda drags but so did the first half of the book.

    I loved Dick Tracy & On the Rocks. Too bad you didn't like them more. Madonna was a fantastic actress in Dick Tracy, Desperately Seeking Susan, & A League of Their Own.

    Does WTTB have a preferred way for fans to contact/communicate with Matt or Craig?

    I love the art design and music of Dick Tracy so much! Unfortunately, I think Warren Beatty's performance was uninspired and flat much if the time - I'm not sure what he was going for. Maybe directing yourself is a bad idea? Can you think of any movies where an actor also directed themselves and it was really good? Thank you so much for reviewing Dick Tracy, I've always been very nostalgic for this film.

      Clint Eastwood is pretty good at directing himself. The Outlaw Josey Wales and Unforgiven come to mind. Though I guess his performances aren't the most versatile.
