Getting a physical copy of: "The Ox-Bow Incident" is proving difficult as Arrow Academy no longer exist and it has been out of print for a long time!

Great video Neil. Wellman certainly had a long and varied career. Battleground is one I need to see.
When I watched the incredible Wings years ago I posted it on Instagram. Wellman's daughter Margaret commented and I struck up a conversation with her.

Thanks, Roy. Oh that’s great that you had that communication. Battleground is well worth seeing. Thanks for watching

Wonderful tribute to a great director. I still haven't seen Wings!! I don't remember seeing Buffalo Bill, G.I. Joe or Battleground, although I may have seen them when I was a kid. But the others you mention are excellent films. I also love Wellman's Beggars of Life (1928), starring Wallace Beery, Richard Arlen and Louise Brooks, and Wild Boys of the Road (1933), starring my favorite kid actor, Frankie Darro. Both films are highly recommended.

Hi Mike. Thanks very much. There’s a nice blu ray out for Wings; it’s also on TH-cam and Tubi. Beggars of Life is one I didn’t quite get to but I can watch it. I did look for Wild Boys of the Road but couldn’t find, I’ll keep my eye out for it.

Hi Neil, First I want to tell you that I have been having trouble either with my Chromebook or my modem, not sure which. So, if I suddenly can't watch your videos or comment, please don't think i have lost interest. I enjoyed this video too! I think the only two I have seen are, The High and the Mighty and A Star Is Born. The High and the Mighty was a forerunner of disaster films for sure! Thanks for the informative video! Have a great evening!

Hi Lita. No worries. I hope your system issues resolve. I did give you a name check in the description field for this video. Thanks again as really it was you nudging me to watch The High and the Mighty that prompted my thoughts for making this video

You got me at the start there Neil, I was about to start typing when you explained how William A Wellman influenced those fellow filmmakers. I love the grapefruit scene in Public Enemy too. That’s a lovely tribute to a very fine director, it’s cool how modern directors are influenced by past styles. I need to get myself a copy of The Ox-Bow Incident 🧐 very informative video mate, take care👍😃👍

Hi Alan. Thanks for watching. Yes, definitely an influential director, just not a name you hear mentioned too much these days. I need a copy myself of Ox-Bow Incident, I have seen it a couple of times but don’t have it in my collection. All the best

Great overview of William Wellman's career. Of course, as I have said before, I prefer the 1954 A Star Is Born but his is great as well. Carole Lombard is so great in Nothing Sacred and shows Wellman's versatility. TCM Archives Forbidden Hollywood Collection Volume Three has six of Wellman's pre-code movies in the volume. I've always liked The High And The Mighty.

Hi Randy. Thanks for watching. Yes, Carole Lombard is a lot of fun in Nothing Sacred. Good to know about that TCM set, I’ll have to look out for that.

Great video as ever Neil. You do splendid work, keeping such directors, actors and movies alive in the public conversation. I'm embarrassed at how few Wellman films I have actually seen. I'm still yet to watch some must-see classics such as Wings, Public Enemy, A Star Is Born, Battleground etc etc. It's quicker to list the ones I have seen: Nothing Sacred, The Ox-Bow Incident, Call Of The Wild, Track Of The Cat. But the one I enjoyed most is Yellow Sky - some great photography across the stark, salt flats. I'm big on Westerns (you can probably tell) and I keep a notebook listing them by year. On making it, I was surprised at how few Westerns were actually made in 1944. Buffalo Bill is perhaps the most famous of them. It's one of the only years of which I have never seen a Western from. I must remedy that. Thanks again. All the best.

Hi. Thanks for the great comments. Track of the Cat is still one I want to see, and Yellow Sky. I missed Track of the Cat when it was on Criterion Channel recently but both it and Yellow Sky are on TH-cam so I will get to them. I hadn’t thought about 1944 being a weak year for westerns but I think you’re right. I have a hefty encyclopedia of western movies and the ones listed for 1944 are relatively minor ones from the genre. Indeed Buffalo Bill is now the only one I have seen from that year

For someone who like's John Wayne, i have never heard of Island in the sky, I will keep a lookout for that one, One i do know But have never seen is The High and the mighty, I did own it at one point but must have passed it on. Will also check out Battleground, I did for one moment think it was The Last Blitzkrieg which also stars Van Johnson about German soldiers who pretend to be American soldiers at the battle of the Bulge, great film if you haven't seen that one.

Hi. Yes, like I say Island in the Sky isn’t plot heavy, it’s a survival drama with a lot of attempts to get a radio signal and Wayne generally looking unphased by the cold and lack of provisions but I found it enjoyable. And The High and the Mighty is worth a watch, Airport certainly used a similar format….I’ve not seen The Last Blitzkrieg, will look out for it. Thanks. Have a good weekend

Wonderful video Neil and incredibly interesting. Funnily enough Wings has been on my mind recently as it's been sat on my shelf waiting to be watched for a while, so I think I'll get to it quite soon. I like the idea of an engineering award at the oscars! Maybe we'd see less CGI and more innovative practical effects if that still existed these days. The Ox-Bow Incident was a very affecting film, but interesting to hear it was a flop considering the calibre of the cast. Plenty of films here that I'm not familiar with, so I'll have to track down some copies as Wellman seems like a director I should be better acquainted with.

Hi Warren. Thanks very much for watching. Great to hear you have a copy of Wings, I’d like to think you will be impressed by it when you get to it. Yes, the engineering award is an interesting one, the first and only time it was given. Similarly at those first Oscars the beautiful film Sunrise (one of my favourite silent movies, technically brilliant) won for Artistic Quality of Production, again the first and only time that particular award was given….Wellman certainly was an influential director (or his films were at least), just not a name that is talked about a lot these days.
