The Black Panther is a 1977 film available on blu ray via the BFI and it tells the chilling story of Donald Neilson, who was involved in armed robbery and kidnapping. In this review I just discuss the timing of the release of the film, its withdrawal from distribution for 35 years and its reissue. MARTIN SCORSESE’S HIDDEN GEMS OF BRITISH CINEMA
i'm new to your channel Neil and i really enjoyed that!
Hi. Thanks for watching. I hope there were some movies of interest to you
Hi Neil, Was just checking out this video to see if you have Kings of The Sun. It stars Yul Brynner, George Chakiris, and Shirley Anne Field. I watched it a couple nights ago and enjoyed it. Have you seen it? I think it was filmed in 1963. Hoping all is well with you!
Hi Lita. No I don’t own it nor have I seen it but would be interested to do so with J Lee Thompson as director and with that support role for Shirley Anne Field. Glad you enjoyed it
Great video. Thanks for showing that zoom tool on the Rijksmuseum, I had no idea it existed, what an amazing insight. Regarding your opening question, it's a huge subject and hard to define. I know a lot of artists use a composition rule called 'the golden section' which relates to ratio (eg - the distances between objects) which perhaps explains the maths behind why some shots just 'work'. I hope I'm making sense there. But maths make it sound terribly dry. I guess sometimes certain shots/compositions have a certain evocative feel that's hard to explain, much like poetry. Barry Lyndon is a film I really love and watch often just to indulge in its splendour (I love the music too). I hadn't heard of the Rembrandt movies you mentioned but have since seen that Nightwatching is streaming on Amazon so I will check it out. I have only seen The Draughman's Contract once, on a pan and scan VHS, so I must revisit it in it's proper glory. . Another film I really enjoyed that similarly combines art and mystery is Schalcken the Painter made in 1979 (I think it was a BBC production) which is an adaptation of a Sheridan Le Fanu ghost story. Definitely check that out if you haven't seen it, I think you would enjoy it. All the best.
Hi. Thanks very much for watching and for your comments. The photo of the painting on the Rijksmuseum is well worth looking at. The level of detail that you can explore is amazing….Im aware of Schalcken the Painter as the BFI have reissued it but have not been able to yet get a copy. The BFI also reissued The Draughtsman’s Contract, it will look considerably better than your pan and scan vhs. When I went to the BFI archives open day, they talked a little about the restoration of the film for its 4K release, it was interesting stuff and made me notice a little detail I wouldn’t have seen otherwise
really enjoyed this video, hopefully you dont get too discouraged by the few views, Im afraid you're making content for intelligent adults and this is something youtube doesnt allow, next time shows us more ass, Neil (Im kidding, please don't). You should create a video of artists or painters movie biographies
Hi. Thanks for watching. I have to take it on the chin if I don’t engage people enough. I know I don’t always get my thoughts and comments across in a way that holds interest but if it’s a topic that sparks my interest or has me suddenly exploring a range of related movies then I like to at least give it a go and hope that someone who has a genuine interest in that particular subject will find my video eventually. Some viewers just want to skim through haul videos. For now at least I haven’t got experts ripping my video apart haha….I do actually have quite a few movies which are artist bio-pics so can maybe put those together for a future video. Cheers
Hi Neil, regards to your question, I think it would apply mainly to scenes of nature for me personally (preferably void of humans and signs of structures but that’s just my antisocial preference 🤣) I enjoyed the information on The Night Watch painting and the detail of the photo was incredible 😮 The Nightwatching by Peter Greenway sounds very intriguing, I’ve not heard of that film before 🧐 fascinating stuff mate, take care👍😃👍
Hi Alan. Thanks for watching and answering. I remember the first time I felt like freeze framing a moment was actually a nature scene when I saw the western Shane which begins with a beautiful shot of a deer drinking from a pond with the backdrop of the plains and mountains.
Incredibly interesting video Neil! I've got to say I'm not trusting at all when a film says it's based on a true story ever since I read that Fargo is completely made up! But, I do love a film or story that is based off something real, and is so interesting that it compells you to research around the topic or person. I watched and loved Van Gogh from Maurice Pialat a year or two ago, and it blew me away and led me to read up all about him and his life. I was lucky enough to visit the Rijksmuseum last year, and it was an incredible place. I wish I could remember if I saw this painting or not, but it's certainly a place you could spend days in and not see everything. I'll definitely try to track down these 3 films, as they look very interesting indeed and right up my street. I just watched another Charles Laughton film a couple days ago and as I was looking through his filmography, I realised I've barely scratched the surface and there is so much more to explore from him. I also really enjoyed The Draughtsman's Contract which was a much darker and different tale than I was expecting, and I'm keen to see more from Peter Greenaway, and Nightwatching sounds brilliant. Again, a wonderful video Neil! Artists often seem to be be rich subjects for films to explore and quite often as is the case here, tragic stories.
Hi Neil, I know you said you enjoyed it for what it was but I’d like to say thank you for biting the bullet and watching it for us, sounds like a film I wouldn’t particularly enjoy 😬 Scott Caan went on to star in Hawaii Five-O as Danny and his acting alas is not on the same level as his fathers 🧐 cheers mate, take care👍😃👍
Hi Alan. Thanks. The script and performances are pretty lousy for the most part but Farrell’s enthusiasm is fun and the stunts and action set pieces are done better than many higher budget films.
Great idea. I know that Stanley Kubrick had certain paintings in mind when he made the film Barry Lyndon and with the special lighting and lenses he used, many scenes do seem like paintings. That was amazing, the detail that you can get with the painting you used for the demonstration. I have not seen either of those Rembrandt films. We used to have a restaurant in Kansas City named Rembrandts after the artist. You stole my thunder at the end of your video about Kubrick's film. Will have to see the Greenaway films.
Hi Randy. Barry Lyndon definitely has some scenes that are just incredible to look at. Greenaway has always been a more “arthouse” director and has worked with much lower budgets but his sense of art appreciation really comes across. And yes, the detail in that photo is extraordinary. It’s fun to explore the photo, there’s amazing detail on the costumes and you get to see things that you would otherwise easily miss from just a general overview
Hi Neil, Great video! Although I would love to see such an old piece of art, I wouldn't want it on my wall. I'd rather have beautiful nature scenes. But some interesting theories about it. Thanks for sharing your information, it is very interesting stuff!
Hi Lita. Well don’t worry. At 12’ x 14’ you would need a really large mansion to hang it up anyway :) Thanks for watching
Great stuff Neil. Loved the off on artistic tangent you presented us. Top marks 👍🏼
Thanks, Jamie. I fear I probably come across as a bumbling idiot but hopefully some of it made sense
Hi Neil, Late watching video's again, I don't think i have watched that version of Dracula but i have heard good things about it. The company of wolves has a great cast in it, i tried watching it a few weeks back but couldn't get into it, Will give it another go but i think on the night i it just wasn't for me.
Hi. I rewatched The Company of Wolves a few nights ago and it reminded me of my original frustrations with it. Some great production design and effects achieved on a low budget but the narrative meanders too much. It’s fine but I wish I’d enjoyed it more
I'll give this one a miss then 😂
The stunts are fun
I seen one time when it came out. You sum it up well. That same year James Van der Beek was in Texas Rangers another over the top type western.
Hi. Thanks. The James Van Der Beek reference is an interesting one considering Dawsons Creek was big at the time and he had starred with Scott Caan and Ali Larter in Varsity Blues. Farrell is a lot of fun in this in the action scenes but Van der Beek may have been more suitable casting as both he and Gabriel Macht would perhaps have looked more like brothers.
I have heard of it and funnily enough I went to watch it recently upon noticing that i'd never seen a Western made in the year 2001. It's a surprisingly weak year for Westerns. So I chose to watch American Outlaws only to discover that I didn't own it, just thought I did. But I did own a copy of The Meeksville Ghost from the same year so I watched that and......yeah.....can't exactly recommend that either. It's a 'supernatural' Western with Judge Reinhold as the ghost. It felt more like a children's tv episode aimed at 12 year olds but still, i enjoyed it for what it was, but only just..Your impression of American Outlaw sounds like it's in a similar ballpark regarding quality (sounds like a better film in fact) and I will definitely watch it one day. It sounds fun enough and historical accuracy is pretty much out of the window with most Westerns anyway - print the legend and all that! Happy trails.
Hi. Thanks for commenting. I wish Judge Reinhold had got better roles, he’s always likeable. I see the lovely Lesley Anne Down is also in The Meeksville Ghost, I haven’t seen her in anything for years. Yes, generally I like my westerns to be serious but this one is likeable enough and deserves recognition for its stunts and action sequences. Farrell has the same energy here as when Costner broke out in Silverado
It’s a fun movie to watch….Timothy Dalton plays a good bad guy in this 😎😎😎
Phone booth is a good one with Colin Ferrel if you haven’t seen it
Thanks, yes I have seen it, it’s a fun watch. Thanks for watching and commenting
Hi Neil, no,never heard of that one. Sounds terrible. I think I'd like it.
Yes its a new one on me neil
I don't remember American Outlaw. You would never think of a weak script since you had the great Catwoman writer. Or would you? Maybe they should have called it "Fast & Furious: American Outlaws. At least they had a good cinematographer.
Hi Randy. Haha, well it is all about “family” so yes you could almost imagine it as a fast and furious western. Fun stunts
Hi Neil, Are you sure it is not a comedy? I just can't picture Colin Farrell as Jesse James. Just joking about it being a comedy. It does sound like you enjoyed it, so it did what a movie should do, entertain you. I have never seen it, but would if I got a chance to. Glad you had fun watching this! Hope you have a great rest of your week!
Hi Lita. Not a comedy but definitely not one to take seriously. Enjoy your week too
Fences is great! Freddy is Jason is a guilty pleasure. I dig it. Nice pickups!
Hi Neil, I’m not sure it casting Colin Farrell as Jesse James is inspired of just foolish… please let us know, once you’ve watched it 🧐 blimey The Company Of Wolves take me back 🤔 I watched the stage version of War Of The Worlds on Tv a few months back and it looked incredible, I’m going to have to get tickets to the actual show one day. Color Out Of Space is so bizarre. I have Pink String And Sealing Wax (purely because it’s set in Brighton) but I’ve yet to see it 😬 nice BFI grabs Neil 🙌 fingers crossed for you on the postal strike, take care mate👍😃👍
Hi Alan. Yes, the fact I hadn’t even heard of American Outlaws before doesn’t bode well but it will be interesting to check out. I just rewatched The Company of Wolves last night - some really great production design on a low budget but the narrative structure is a bit wobbly. Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds double album used to be one I’d play over and over. Color out of Space definitely bizarre, I tend to struggle a bit with many HP Lovecraft adaptations. And yes, I remember being envious of you having Pink String and Sealing Wax as it only seems to be available in the UK. Glad I can now check it out. Have a good week, sir
Another amazing haul, Neil!!
Thanks, Mike. Hope you have had a good weekend
Western Approaches is a great piece of British propaganda, just like Went the Day Well? Pat Jackson's decision to use real people instead of actors was beneficial to the narrative structure, plus the production used Technicolor for most of the films production. I did read that some of the locations scenes used a system called Monopack, which I wasn't familiar with. The Technicolor aspect was probably used to market the film more effectively to other countries. I did pick this up on DVD via Optimum Releasing back in the day. Unfortunately, the DVD hasn't been fully restored, so I may as well pick up the new Blu-Ray from the BFI. Company of Wolves has probably one of the best British production design studio sets I've seen. But then the production designer in question was none other than Anton Furst of Batman 89. I think the only digital effect applied to CofW's was where the sky has been altered in someway. I really don't mind the slow storytelling of Wolves. Whilst others want the quick fix and action/horror approach, this film feels more like a fireside story told with time and thought and some frights added into the mix.
Hi. Thanks for the comments. Great to hear you are familiar with Western Approaches and I like the nod to Went the Day Well, one of my favourite films. It will be interesting to revisit The Company of Wolves after all these years
Nice additions there matey.. Freddy Vs Jason is a fun one which I'm sure you'll enjoy 😎👍
Thanks, Marcus. Yes, in general I’m not too bothered about all the various Elm Street/13th sequels but this one sounds like a bit of ridiculous fun. Thanks for watching
Some nice BFI editions there. Love the T shirt Neil.
Thanks, Jamie. I wish I could get my hands on more BFI releases. The T shirt is a snug fit haha but I liked the design
Hello Neil, great month of additions so far. It made me smile to see you with The Entertainer. Those special features are excellent. I've seen them a few times. Always amuses seeing the ladies and gentlemen of that era on the beach dressed as if they were going out for dinner. Love in the Afternoon is a Wilder I don't have. I don't think we even have a dvd over here. Hope the rest of your stuff turn up soon.
Hi Roy. I was very pleased to find that bfi release of The Entertainer. Your wonderful video talking about the film and showing the theatre and locations now would make a great special feature to include on a future release…..I have seen Love in the Afternoon before and generally liked it but struggled to warm to Gary Cooper’s performance as he seemed out of place. But it’s a role that he was apparently very fond of. Will be interesting to rewatch. Thanks for watching
I gotta be honest re: company of wolves, it has a great george fenton score, really good acting particularly by lansbury, technically is almost flawless, but I do find it very slow and boring. Yet certain moments have stayed with me over the years, and particularly the Fenton score is one of my favorites, so Id say it has a certain je ne sais quoi, a sort of fascination about it and a great atmosphere
Hi. Yes, I think I reacted similarly at the time. Hoping I won’t find it dull on rewatch. Thanks for watching
Fantastic pickups Neil I recently watched Dracula 🦇 79;I really enjoyed it mate 👍🏻
Hi Stuart. Yes, I remember that you liked it. Glad I will now get to see it in full. Have a good rest of weekend
@neilsmoviechannel3199 and you mate 👍🏻
American Outlaws sounds like a real potential trainwreck. A pretty much unknown at the time Colln Farrell leading in a western like this sounds too intriguing to miss! Something you might be interested in, I watched today was East Riders/Raging Bulls about the era between 1966 and 1980 when the emergence of new directors leading filmmaking over producers... People like Coppola, Bogdanovich, Spielberg, Altman and Peckinpagh. It's all done through interviews and was very interesting....
Hi Erik. Yes, I don’t have high hopes for American Outlaws but it’s got quite a cast and I’m interested to see what approach it takes….I think I read the book of Easy Riders Raging Bulls a while back and didn’t know a documentary had been made also. Thanks, I will look it up
Some nice films. I don't have it but I have always liked Love In The Afternoon. It would be interesting to see Denholm Elliott as George Smiley. I do need to get an all region player. I do have The Prisoner on blu-ray and it may make an appearance in my 1967 video. You showed some very interesting BFI films and I hope the strike ends and you can get the rest of your order.
Thanks, Randy. I picked up an LG all region player a year or so ago, it is handy to have. Haha, I thought it likely you would have The Prisoner, a series I really should have seen before now. Yes, it was a bit frustrating to discover my order of BFI films had been split into two packages but hopefully I’ll receive the others soon. They definitely have some great releases. Thanks for watching
Freddy vs Jason is a fun mixture, Friday the 13th and a nightmare in Elm Street. Enemy mine I have that copy you showed it was one of my favorite movies because it was always on TV back in the 90s but the transfer on that is really not spectacular .
Thanks, Mike. At the cinema I didn’t go beyond the first three Elm Street movies and I think I’ve only seen the first two Friday the 13ths. It will be interesting to rewatch Enemy Mine, I remember liking it
Hi Neil, Finally, a new dose of Neil's videos. Yeah! The only one of these I own is Love In The Afternoon. I remember Enemy Mine from years ago. It was a good one. I have seen Fences and that Dracula with Frank Langella. The BFI movies look good, especially Shooting Stars and Pink String and Sealing Wax. Some good buys there! Hope things are going well.
Thanks, Lita. I’m particularly excited with the BFI releases, hopefully I’ll receive the others soon. Not sure when my next video will be up. Thanks for watching
I’ mentioned this channel for this year
Thanks, Sara. All the best, I hope you have been enjoying some great movies
@@neilsmoviechannel3199 you’re welcome yes sir
Awesome mate😎👍 I now check warewaves quite often now as i missed so e recent sales like that bfi one .😢 I watched that Dracula one you mentioned last night on my foxtell
Hi Deon. I know Rarewaves are doing another 10% off everything sale this weekend. I will wait to make sure I receive my complete order before using them again….Looking forward to seeing Dracula in full, it was frustrating when my laserdisc became unwatched
@neilsmoviechannel3199 Cheers mate thanks for the heads up about the sale mate.Rarewaves are a bugger for sending out incomplete orders at times I've only had one time when I Never received a boxset I ordered but they refunded me without a problem. I have been ordering from them now for a few years, and I still miss out on those bloody sales, hahaha. Darn man, not the laserdisc noooʻooooo!!!!
Man this video is a treat. Five years hard labour reduced to a 12m bullet. 'Best of' lists like this are goldmines of inspiration for fellow movie lovers, so thanks for that. My score is pretty well split. I've seen 25. Own about another 25 (yet to see). And of the remaining 50, I've heard of about half of them. . So many films to respond to - Sunrise is my favourite silent movie and Cottage In Dartmoor is my favourite British silent movie.. I've seen all the Westerns apart from The Great Silence (which i'm holding back on until the perfect bleak winter's day).. Lots there on my watchlist that will now get bumped-up, thanks to the thumbs-up. Eg - The Whisperers, Robbery, Never Let Go, We are the Lambeth Boys, Tiger Bay also Cactus Flower and Targets (which has been knocking around on VHS for 23 years, still unseen). My film knowledge drops off a little in the 21st century so plenty of new titles there for me to explore as well.....Cheers, grand job there. (p.s. don't know if you do requests, but in December it could be fun to see what everyone on this channels' 'top ten first-time viewings of 2024' were? Just a thought :)
Hi. Thanks very much. In this big TH-cam world I’m grateful if people find and watch my videos but it lifts my spirits even more when people know of the movies I’m talking about or are at least curious to discover them. Very glad to hear you love A Cottage in Dartmoor. I have just picked up Asquith’s first silent movie, Shooting Stars, which I’m looking forward to. A bleak winter’s day will be a great time for your first watch of The Great Silence. All the films you mention for adding to your watchlist resonate with me not just because I think they are good but also because they link in with other movies or subjects that interest me. I hope you enjoy them when you get to them….Last year I did a top 35 first time watches for 2023 so some of those feature in this video. I may have to do a different kind of round up video for 2024 as this video already includes some favorite first time watches. Many thanks for your comments. Have a good weekend
Hi Neil, Was just re-watching this video and thought I would check in and see how you are doing? I hope good, been missing seeing your videos!
Hi Lita. Kind of you to check in. I actually hope to say something more about this particular video shortly. I’ve had a few things going on but will likely have new videos coming up soon. Hope you’re enjoying some great movies, have a good weekend
Hi Neil, Just checking to see if you had the movie, Not Without My Daughter. I see you do and wondered if you have watched it? A real life horror story! Just finished watching it and was horrified that things like that could happen! Take care!
Hi Lita. It’s been a long time since I saw it (on TV, not that laserdisc). I’d need to rewatch to give opinion.
I actually bought the Blu-Ray of Company from my local branch of HMV in their criterion collection sale just last week, Neil. (My amateur operatic company performed the show in the spring this year.)
Hi Ian. Ah, that’s interesting. I would think that particularly as you have experience with performing the show then you might get even more enjoyment out of the film than I did. Such difficult songs to master, I found watching the rehearsal process really fascinating…and exhausting for the cast, who showed such dedication to getting it just right. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for watching and commenting
Sunrise I have but have not watched yet . I don’t care what the Academy decided I still consider it a best picture winner.
Thanks, Mike. I hope you get to it, it’s a technical masterpiece
Brilliant! Thank you so much Neil 🙏👍
Hi. Thanks for watching. I hope there were some of interest to you
Hi Neil, blimey, I can barely remember what I watch last month, never mind what I’ve seen over the past five years 😮 (please tell me you write down the titles you’ve watched in a note book and this isn’t all from memory) 😬 there are so many in here I’ve not even heard of (it’s cool to have recommendations) nice one Neil, take care mate👍😃👍
Hi Alan. Haha, yes I keep a notebook (have had movie diaries on and off since 1983). Hopefully some of interest to you. All the best
Definitely going to check out A Long Memory. John Mills is my favourite actor.
Hi. Thanks for watching. Oh yes, if you’re a Mills fan then definitely The Long Memory is of interest as he plays quite an embittered character. Some great London locations too. I also mentioned Tiger Bay, with young Hayley Mills starring with him too, love that one also
What a great video, only 9 in my collection, good to see two Hammer films and one of them covering a very difficult and disturbing subject. You have a lot of World Cinema titles which i feel i should investigate and check out. Really enjoy seeing your love of film which I totally understand.
“By ‘eck!” Thanks for watching, Ian, very kind. Yes, although those two Hammers are certainly atypical of the studio, they’re ones that have really thrilled me. I don’t want to preach and there are still huge gaps in my world cinema knowledge but I think exploring all types of cinema is absolutely vital for anyone who loves movies. So if any of these pique anyone’s interest at all, then that’s great. Thanks for commenting
The great silence is fantastic very bleak and the ending 😮
Absolutely. Thanks, Stuart
You might be surprised that I have only seen 10 of these movies. And one of them (I won't say which one... lol) I think is one of the worst movies I've seen, but that could be me.
Hi. Thanks for watching. I know that Jeanne Dielman and Speed Racer are ones in particular that some people realllly dislike so maybe it’s one of those?
@@neilsmoviechannel3199 I absolutely loved Speed Racer. It was fun and totally visually amazing. And I have not seen Jeanne Dieiman. The one I hated so was Margaret. I found everyone in that film incredibly unlikeable, being either cruel or a total fool. There was no one to identify with or feel for and it seemed to just plod on for an eternity.
@ Ahh, Margaret yes. Funnily enough that was the one title I thought about swapping for another to mention as, although I rated it very highly at the time, my recollection of it now isn’t as strong as most of the others. I know I saw the extended cut on the Criterion Channel, which I gather was better than the theatrical release. Glad to hear you liked Speed Racer.
Wow. Every time I watch one of your videos you show me movies I have never heard of. Always adding to my watch list. Out of the 100 you shown I have only seen Kajaki(aka Kilo Two Bravo), The Blob, Cactus Flower, The Grey Fox and Speed Racer
Hi. Thanks very much for watching and I hope there’s some here that you’ll enjoy later on. That’s great that you have seen those ones
So many films I need to check out and so many I have enjoyed over the years. Great video sir.
Thanks, Ronin. And I finally got to see I Am Cuba last night, that would definitely have gone on the list. Just jaw dropping filmmaking. Have a good weekend
Hi Neil, great video. I enjoyed that. I think I did not too bad with 19 watched. There's quite a few on my radar. I really want to see Jeanne Dielman after it topped the poll a couple of years ago but it's very difficult to get a copy over here.
Hi Roy. 19 is good as I certainly don’t expect some of these to be of interest to everyone. I have Jeanne Dielman as a Criterion edition but I gather Criterion options in the UK are more limited. Frustrating
I have only seen 12 out of your hundred with And Soon The Darkness being one that I watched recently as I bought it in the Kino Lorber sale. I thought it was very well done. I do have Queen of Spades and The Day The Earth Caught fire on DVD but have not watched them yet. You showed several thrillers that really piqued my interest, among them Tiger Bay and The Whisperers.
Hi Randy. Oh, I’ll be interested to know what you think of Queen of Spades and Day the Earth Caught Fire when you get to them. The Whisperers is also available on Kino Lorber, more of a drama than a thriller and with a really great performance by Edith Evans. Thanks for watching
I seen 46. I own 32. All those Matarazzo's movies. I saw all of them when I was a child on TV. Actually the leading man of most of them was born in my own city. And I lovevJames Stewart westerns.
Hi again. That’s really good. I confess I haven’t got to the Matarazzo films yet and from what I have read, there seems to be pretty mixed opinions on them. Great to know you have actually seen them.
@neilsmoviechannel3199 The Mattarazzo's films are terrible I saw the because my granny used to watched. And I founded them boring and sappy
