toyota v12 would definitely be more reliable, but that's a luxury motor and this is a performance motor

That steering wheel looks so nice, the shape and everything looks perfect on it.
The only thing I dont like is just the steering wheel, hate it, if I wore the owner I would bring it back to a AMG specialist and tell them to replace it with something later of amg steering wheels

Mercedes interiors of this era have the quality too, nowadays they suffer horrible plastic creaking due to the quality decreasing because of the technology they've put in. Shame

Current MB interiors are some of the best looking of all brands, including names like RR, Bentley etc. The interiors from the time of this SL are horribly looking, they aged soo quickly and terribly. Old Audi interiors for example look way less outdated because of their simple, puristic design.
Tbh I like the new Mercedes interiors. I think the one for the S63 AMG is really nice. Also, Bentleys are horrible. They're basically the cheap Rolls-Royce.

AMG used to be about one thing: power. Immense, enormous, tyre smoking levels of power.
I don't know about the overseas markets, but in Europe and UK these days you can buy a poverty-spec, diesel Mercedes and get it with the "AMG pack". What does that get you? Big alloy wheels, slightly stiffer springs... and the humiliation of knowing that everyone thinks that YOU stuck that AMG badge on your diesel Merc! I'm fairly certain I've seen cars with the AMG styling pack and AMG badge-delete, presumably because the owners wanted the look without everyone asking "Hey, buddy. Why did you put an AMG badge on your obviously not AMG Mercedes?"
All the major brands do it (even Ford); we have high taxes based on emissions if you own the car, and if you have a company car there's a different set of tax rules that again, tax heavily on emissions. So you can understand that they do it to sell more cars.
😂 Yeah those AMG badged diesels and non AMG engined Mercs make me laugh.
@@Saif0412 you don't get an AMG badge in the back even if you get the AMG package on a diesel or non-AMG engine model. The only thing you get is the AMG logo foot-mats and wheels. Yes there are the questionable AMG badges for the baby AMGs (the 43 and 35). But besides those any ///AMG badge on the back of a non AMG-engine Mercedes was glued on after market and is quite an embarrassment.
@@jakobsiegel1068 The best part is when they stick AMG on the left side of the trunk but forget to change the right side to match. Always fun to see AMG SL500's around..
@@Darion350 it was actually the other way around the model was on the left for AMG and non-AMG models and the AMG badge was on the right. For the past couple of years that has been changed so now the non-AMG models have the model on the left and optional the 4matic on the right (as before) but the AMG models have the model on the right and the AMG badge on the left. So now it's even more obvious if you see a new mercedes with the unchanged (or even changed) model designation on the left and an AMG badge on the right side...
I also love the ones where the font size of the amg logo does not match the font size of the model and they are not even aligned. Like the AMG logo is 1/2 inch lower or so. Fun stuff...
I have a 2019 GLC 43 AMG Biturbo which is scary fast in S+ mode, this an American spec car. There aren't many cars I meet that are quicker.

Impressive car. The power delivery that this SL has is like nothing else Mercedes made... it's hard to compare it to any other factory production car in terms of looks and the insane torque that the engine has.

Humbulla93 very few Italians have the money for it, and even fewer have good taste to buy one of these instead of an suv. Plus taxes and roads are so shitty that you will probably destroy and not enjoy it

AMG used to be absolutely insane. As he said, all they used to do was just throw power into these cars. Old AMGs had more power than they had any right to have. But they were fun and ridiculous, and almost undriveable. I’d rather have an SL Black Series than a Ferrari Enzo or a Chiron.

The interior on this is soooo right! Looks fresh and modern 10 years later. I doubt the same will be true of the current line-up that Merc is producing.
Can't wait to see you drive a regular drop top SL65. There is little better than hearing a V12 top down roar while you're blasting at 100mph down the freeway.
If I can find one I will absolutely do the top down review through some tunnels

Have the owner upload some video of this on the track, I'd love to see how it handles on a track. There's no videos on the car except for like you and Doug driving it around town but as you know this thing is for the track/autobahn.
To be fair...Doug never exceeds 60mph in his videos lol. But yes if I can get track footage I'll share it

2005 SL500 owner here. I pulled harder than you did off the line screeching tires and smoke. Lucky to have traction control. Even 340 ft lb is enough to take you off the road. Drive
Safe. 700 lb ft plus is only meant for accelerating when you are already going over 100mph. Otherwise you are asking for it

GTA 4 was underrated
My buddy has an 09 e550 and it is a fucking beast. Absolute sleeper, instant torque, it feels like you can murder anyone on the highway. Have driven in the new amgs and I didn’t feel that torque as much. The e550 just wants you to push it, it would cruise at 100-140 no problem.
She has WIDE hips, wow.

Amg’s from this day and age will forever be my favorite.
With that much torque, cylinders and turbo to play with, having the old 5 speed gives more time to enjoy the pull aha :D

it was the only transmission at the time that could withstand the amount of torque that engine produced with very minor modification while giving the same refinement that their customers wanted and expected.
@@kevinly4695 that's also why they are very durable with smaller engines. The M113 will destroy a timing chain before the transmission grenades 😁

The AMG badge gets put on a lot of mercedes today and honestly I really do like a few of them. Some are aggressive but most are just nice, good, powerful, comfy. But the black series cars feel like a true reflection of the cars AMG used to build, a revisit to their roots of cars that were brutal. Cars that would kill you if you didn't have the skills to drive them.
Good video. I like that you took the SL fast on highways and quick on backroads. Definitely covered the details. Black Series SL65's haven't depreciated at all. Still $300k because the M275 was one special AMG engine - a simple RennTech ECU reflash adds 100hp. Did the owner crack the windshield?

If I'm not mistaken, I believe this was the car that Jeremy Clarkson said came delivered to the TG office with a letter that stated "under no circumstances shall the traction control be turned off". Which, I think is almost as amazing as those flares.
Of all the cars I have ever driven, this is the one I would least want to drive without traction control 😂

My buddy let me drive this beast one time when he was drunk not sure if it was a black edition but it was a 2016 SL63 AMG, and wow was it just so fuckin special to drive.
There's one in my dealer right now. My all time favorite Mercedes. SLS black series is my second favorite.

These are one of the cars on my short list of Rare supercars I'd jump at to own. Drove one shortly after they came out and the owner was egging me on to keep going faster. Okay!
Semi-related story, I was having a nightmare of a day just this morning, pulled up to get gas, and mere seconds after I got there, a fairly distinguished gentleman pulled up in a 720s on the opposing side of the pump, in a rare color too. I was really trying to restrain my enthusiasm, but he cracked a smile when he knew that I knew what it was. We had a nice chat about it, and I suspect if we both had more time, a friendship could have blossomed from a shared love of fine automobiles as we discussed our experiences in previous rides.

This car is very fast straight beast.
This engine and the 5.5L m157 v8 from amg are the 2 engines with the most torque and can handles the most torque of any car, tuned with upgraded turbos they can handle over 1000 lb ft of torque but have to be limited to 1000 for the trans plus it would be overkill.
My favorite car of all times no matter what comes out every year.
